“Hi, Tiger! I missed you!”

“Hi, Babe!”

We hugged and kissed more than we normally did when we met at the ER after her shift, then she hugged and kissed Kara, and the three of us started our walk home.

“How was San Francisco?” Jessica asked.

“Good. The User Group meeting went very well, I saw my old boss and professor, Scott Bannerman, and Bethany and I had a lot of time to talk.”

“If all you did with her is talk, I’m not sure I want to go back to the house!”

“We did that, too. But the talking was far more important. We needed to figure out what we were doing and what it meant before we did it.”

“You would think after fifteen years of knowing the girl, you could dispense with talking her to death before having sex!”

“That’s more or less what Abbie said a year ago, and what Bethany asked for. But I was right. Bethany did get upset with me, but she calmed down and we talked it out. This won’t be a regular thing between us. It can’t be, for Nicholas’ sake, Bethany’s sake, and our sake. It’ll happen occasionally, from time to time, but eventually, she has to find someone to live her life together with. I think she will. She’s too young to stay single for the rest of her life. It’s just doesn’t fit her personality. And I can’t be the man she would need, even if I was available full-time.”

“I think that’s wise. What about Samantha?”

“She and I will talk, probably tomorrow night, and we’ll figure out where we are.”

“I had a very long talk with her on Friday after she got home from school. I’m amazed at what a different person she is. Her environment at home was toxic beyond anything I could imagine.”

“Yes. And that’s why I think there’s a very good chance she’ll decide she needs a dad more than a lover.”

“I don’t know,” Jessica said. “I couldn’t tell from the conversation. It’s like what you said after your long talk last week. With Michelle, it was blindingly obvious what was going to happen. With Samantha, it’s not.”

“She’s not going to a monastery!” Kara declared. “That much I am sure of! She did ask if she could have a party for some friends at Halloween. I didn’t think it was wise to invite them to ours, so I suggested Friday night instead. She was thinking about ten or twelve kids from school.”

“I don’t have a problem with that,” I said. “Did you reiterate the rules?”

“Yes. No drugs. No alcohol. And nobody from any society family.”

“That wasn’t a specific rule I made,” I said.

“No, but Jess and I decided it had to be. Samantha didn’t object. Other than her friend Denise, I don’t think she’s talked to anyone involved with the Foundation.”

“Did she call her parents yesterday as we agreed?”

“Yes. I gently reminded her, and she did. She talked to her dad for less than a minute, but talked to her mom for about five.”

“I know she doesn’t really want to talk to them, but I think it’s important for her to talk to them every few weeks just to let them know she’s fine. I don’t know how much her dad cares, but I think her mom does, at least a bit.”

“She had some interesting things to say about her dad.”

“I have no doubt,” I said. “And that conversation she and I had led to a conversation with Bethany about not doing anything with our kids’ friends that would upset them, though Bethany pointed out that Birgit will more than likely encourage her friends, rather than be offended.”

Kara laughed, “Your daughter will discover what you like and move heaven and earth to make you happy!”

“Even so, the entire conversation with Samantha, plus the ones I had with Michelle, have given me a lot to think about.”

“Are you just talking High School girls, or girls in general?”

“I’m not sure what I’m thinking at the moment, though I did decide to tell Crystal to find a boyfriend in no uncertain terms.”

“You’re done with her?” Kara asked.

“I think I have to be. I don’t want her to develop an unhealthy attachment. Or give her further reason to believe it’s possible, because I think it’s at least started.”

“It’s a fine line, isn’t it?” Jessica asked. “Between caring for the girl and having her care too much?”

“Absolutely. How’s this for a description of the crux of the problem - I cared too much about Michelle to refuse to go to bed with her, but I might care too much about Samantha to agree to go to bed with her.”

“That really does distill it down,” Jessica said. “Or, from the girl’s perspective, Michelle cares so much for you that she left, and Samantha cares so much for you that she’s staying in a potentially non-sexual relationship.”

“What’s totally crazy about this is that Samantha’s father is sure I’m sleeping with her, and he’s OK with that.”

“I think he has to be, to justify his own behavior,” Jessica said. “If it’s wrong for you, who has the same general taste in girls, then it has to be wrong for him. And he can’t admit THAT without taking a long hard look in the mirror.”

“And if he’s honest, he has to give up his desire for virgin teenage pussy,” Kara said. “He has to face EXACTLY the same choice you did, and he doesn’t want to.”

“I didn’t want to face it, either, but between Hope and Jill, and now Samantha and Michelle, I have to.”

“I sense a new rule forming,” Jessica said.

I nodded, “We’ve already basically limited it to High School Seniors and above, but now it has to be nobody who is friends with my kids. And even High School seniors are a big question mark.”

“You should be able to find college girls who are eighteen or nineteen,” Jessica teased. “And some of them might even be virgins! Wasn’t that your original intent with the Rap Sessions?”

“Yes, but that seems so wrong now, too,” I said with a deep sigh.

“But you aren’t picking out who comes, the students are. It’s become self-perpetuating.”

“And that’s the best approach, because the current students invite others who are mature enough to handle it.”

We arrived home and headed up to our room. We got ready for bed and climbed in, and the conversation died out naturally. We cuddled together and fell asleep.

October 6, 1992, Chicago, Illinois

“Why?” Crystal whined.

“Because I’m married. Because you need someone who can be dedicated to you. The ‘James Bond’ fantasy has to end.”

“But I don’t want it to! I’m OK with this! I like it!”

“And that’s part of the problem. You can’t live a fantasy. And that’s what this is. A fantasy. And it needs to end.”

“No! I don’t want it to end! Please! I’ll do anything you want! Anything!”

I shook my head, “No. I’m sorry if I hurt you, but it needs to end. Now.”

“I gave you my virginity!” she growled angrily. “I let you put your thing in my mouth even though I didn’t really want to! I sucked on it and let you shoot! I even swallowed it! And this is how you treat me? You BASTARD!”

As I had on three previous occasions, I simply stayed still when Crystal slapped me across the face and then stormed out of the coffee shop. I didn’t think I deserved to be slapped, but if that made her feel better, or got out her anger, or whatever, that was fine. I also knew that I’d need to find a new place to have lunch on Tuesdays until we moved to the West Loop, when I’d have to change anyway. Going to the diner where Crystal worked would cause her even more consternation, and I couldn’t do that. I dropped money for the coffee and a tip on the table and left the diner and returned to work.

“You broke it off?” Kara asked later in the day when I arrived home from work.

“And got slapped in the process,” I sighed. “But it had to end. And her reaction showed me that what we talked about last night was right on target. She begged and offered to do anything I wanted if I didn’t break it off.”

“Sorry, Snuggle Bear. Are you OK?”

I nodded, “I did the right thing. Let’s help Abbie get dinner finished.”

After dinner Kara and I went to karate. When we arrived home, Samantha and I went to the sauna to talk as I’d promised her I’d do before she’d left for school. We put up the ‘Privacy Please’ sign, but wore towels as we had the time before.

“Bethany?” she asked once the steam was flowing.

“Very occasionally until she finds someone she wants to be with.”

“She’s moving out in about three weeks?”

“Yes. And you’re welcome to that room. I cleared that with Jessica and Kara. I heard you had a long talk with Jessica.”

She nodded, “And one with Kara, too. I also talked to Abbie, but you know I do that. And I talked with Elyse Sunday evening.”

“None of that surprises me.”

“I also had a very interesting talk with Jennifer.”

I chuckled, “If anyone can tell you stories about me, it’s Jennifer. She knows the real dirt from High School!”

“And that girl Crystal?”

“I broke it off with her today, permanently.”

“Because of me?”

“Actually, no. Because of her. She was living in a fantasy world that had to disappear. She was starting to see the fantasy as something real and obtainable, and that made it very dangerous.”

“Do you think that’s what I’m doing?” she asked quietly.

“I don’t think so. Maybe that first day we went horseback riding, but not since your trip to Monaco.”

“I forgot to ask, is it OK to ride my horse?”

“Of course! I’m happy to ride with you whenever it fits our schedule. In a sense, it’s like the Corvette.”

“Cool. Did Kara tell you I wanted to have a party?”

“Yes, and she said the two of you agreed on the Friday before Halloween and she went over the rules with you.”

Samantha smiled, “You and your rules!”

“You didn’t have any before. Now you have some, though I daresay you have more freedom than most seventeen-year-olds.”

“Is this how you’ll treat your kids?”

“Minus the expensive sports car? Yes.”

“I heard you had a sports car in High School.”

“Which I paid for. I had to borrow a bit of money, but I paid the loan. And I paid for my own insurance. I had a job that let me do that.”

“So about the party, I was thinking five girls and six guys so it kind of balances out properly.”

“That’s fine. Let me know what you need and we’ll make sure you have it. Within reason, of course. The attic room is available and Abbie can show you how to run the stereo and where we keep our CDs, albums, and mix tapes.”

“Kara said it was OK if I came to the party on Saturday, but I couldn’t invite anyone who wasn’t eighteen.”

“That’s right,” I said. “We’ve made some exceptions in the past, but for now, I’d rather you didn’t have your friends with the adults.”

“But you’re going to let me be there.”

“Yes. You’re part of the family. We let our kids come, at least until the costume contest is over. Jesse loves to dance.”

“Do I have to leave then?” she asked with a coy smile.

“No. You’re being treated as an adult because you are one. Well, so long as you act like one. If you don’t, then we’d have to impose more rules until you learned to control your own behavior.”

“Which is how you deal with Jesse. You let him make decisions, but rein him in when he behaves in ways that aren’t appropriate.”

“Yes, exactly.”

“So, rules.”

“Rules?”

“First, you may not hit on any of my friends. You may not even flirt with them. IF I think it’s OK, I’ll let you know, but don’t count on it. Second, I want a veto, though it wouldn’t apply to any girl you’ve been with before. The veto will be the norm. I’ll use the girls at the Rap Session as examples. Paula, no. Wanda, yes. Elizabeth, hell no. Carissa, maybe. Joan, no.”

“You’ll have to explain,” I said.

“Don’t interrupt! Let me finish, please. Third, I get to decide if I live in the dorms or not. Fourth, within whatever limits I work out with your wives, and within your schedule, I can have you whenever I want. Fifth, you have to sleep with me at least one night a week, preferably Friday. In exchange for agreeing to those rules, you get complete, total, and unlimited access to this. No restrictions.”

She stood and dropped the towel, displaying her beautiful young body.

“Nice negotiating tactic,” I chuckled.

“I use all the tools at hand appropriate to the negotiations,” she said without a trace of humor. “I know I’m asking you to give up a lot, but it’s not as much as you were willing to give up that day we were in the barn. What is it you said? It’s not a zero-sum game?”

“I did.”

“So now the ball’s in your court. Daughter or lover. You know the rules for each. Which do you want?”

“Before I answer, will you explain the veto?”

“The default answer is ‘no’. It has to be. I think Wanda could handle the situation. I’m not sure about Carissa. Joan and Paula can’t. Elizabeth is simply far too crass for my tastes, not to mention she’s a left wing b...”

“Brat,” I finished with a smile. “I disagree with her on most things, but she’s extremely smart, even if she’s a bit brash.”

“I don’t like her one bit. And it’s not just politics; it’s her worldview I can’t handle. I mean, sure for an hour or two on Sundays, but there are so many people who I disagree with where it’s not so bad. Jorge, Abbie, Henry, Trish, and others who I don’t agree with, but are very, very smart. And they’re nice about it.”

“I think Elizabeth had a bad experience in High School and she’s letting it color her view of the world. I also think she’s learning things. Elizabeth is the one reason I wish Michelle was still here.”

“Only that reason?” Samantha smirked.

“Yes,” I said, nodding.

“So, what’s your decision? Do I put my towel back on or not?”

I realized just then that taking off the towel wasn’t what I had thought at first - a negotiating tactic. No, it was a way to prove to herself that my decision was real. If I could elect ‘dad’ with her standing naked in front of me, she could safely be in the sauna with us like the rest of the family. And that led me to question what she REALLY wanted.

“Samantha, is this what YOU want, or what you think I want?” I asked.

“You haven’t told me what you want,” she said.

“And you haven’t told me, either. Standing there naked is a way to prove to yourself that I’m sincere if I decide ‘daughter’.”

She laughed, “You’re good. Very good. You’re right. It wasn’t a negotiating tactic. I know what I want, but I want to hear you say what it is you want.”

“I’m struggling with the age difference, and the idea that I’m too much like your dad.”

“You are NOTHING like my dad. Do you know what HE would do in this situation?”

“Not be negotiating, that’s for sure!”

“Oh, he negotiates,” Samantha sighed. “It’s all a matter of what enticements he has to give the girl to get her to give it up. But he’d never, ever agree to any restrictions.”

“Here’s my take on this. You could find another lover. I don’t think you could find another dad.”

“You sound like you’d rather be my dad than my lover.”

“It’s not about what I want or need, or about what you want, but about what you need. I want to be what you need, Samantha.”

“I think there’s a middle ground,” she said. “You know, that middle ground you want to find in any negotiation.”

“And what’s that?”

“I think what I need from you, long-term, is a partner. I don’t mean like husband and wife partners, but a partner in life’s adventures, both business and personal. And as my partner, you can still advise me, provide support, and help me grow and learn. It’s not really equal, because I’m not sure how I can help you right now.”

A WellLived Life 2 Book 7 SakurakoChapter 57 Land of the Rising Sun Part III

June 23, 1994, Oguni, Yamagata Prefecture, Japan My first week in Japan flew by, and a routine developed. Sakurako would wake me; I’d exercise and run, then shower and have breakfast, and share tea with Sakurako. After breakfast, I’d meditate, and then have my training session. After lunch, I’d work in the garden, or, as I had this day, wash the floors in the house. Hiroshi would accompany me back to the cottage and we’d talk while I washed up and dressed for dinner. After dinner, I’d spend...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 7 SakurakoChapter 54 Westward Bound Or is it Eastward

June 15, 1994, Chicago, Illinois “That’s everything, I think,” I said. “My luggage is in the trunk of the car, I have my passport, tickets, and money, both dollars and yen. I can’t think of anything else.” “I’ll see you in five weeks,” Elyse said, giving me a quick hug. “Did you see they rioted in Vancouver last night because they lost the Stanley Cup?” I chuckled, “Only Canadians would riot when they LOSE the Cup! I did see that on the front page of the Trib. Are we ready?” “Michelle and...

Partnership

I want to thank my collaborative, special friend, Dave. Taking turns in writing each scenario was a ‘turn-on’ and filled with anticipation. Without him, Sharon and John would never have met. * Partnership Sharon’s heels clicked on the concrete as she walked toward the Chicago law firm of Connelly & Frisk. Unlocking the front entrance, a cool blast of air hit her face as she entered the front lobby. The night watchman, Joe, sat behind the counter. ‘The boss has you working with him after...

Introvert Extrovert a Partnership

Lizzie and I are partners. Not in the romantic sense, more like a business partnership. I’m a first-class introvert, living quite isolated out in the country and mostly interested in my projects and learning new technical stuff. It’s paid off pretty well. My royalties have been well into the six digits for the past few years and if I’d meet with business people more often it could be more. That’s where Lizzie helps out. She’s going to college for a business degree and is learning to interface...

A WellLived Life Book 6 Kara IChapter 5 Housemates

August 1981, Chicago, Illinois On Sunday morning, I made my usual call to Karin. I described everything in the apartment and all the things I’d done during the week, including the reception. Both of us would start school in a week and we were both looking forward to it. When we finished talking, I went out for my run, showered, and ate breakfast. I made some tea, started a load of laundry, and then turned on the stereo. I put on an REO Speedwagon album and then relaxed on the couch with the...

August 21, 1989, Chicago, Illinois “Unbelievable,” I said when I read the headline from the Chicago Tribune. “It says here that Solidarity activist Tadeusz Mazowiecki was nominated to be Prime Minister of Poland.” I hadn’t had a chance to read the paper on Sunday because it hadn’t been delivered before we left for the race track in Michigan. “So now what?” Kara asked. “We’re in totally uncharted territory. Your guess is as good as anyone’s right about now.” “Steve, do you have a minute?”...

A WellLived Life Book 8 StephieChapter 36 My Lifes Journey

July, 1983, Chicago, Illinois I woke up early on the First of July, because my body clock was still set to Swedish time. The flight back had been long but uneventful, and I was happy that the businessman in the seat next to me hadn’t wanted to talk. I read, wrote some longhand journal entries, ate, and generally relaxed while the plane zipped over the Atlantic. I’d come home, taken a sauna, eaten a light meal, and gone straight to bed, not bothering to check messages, look at the mail that...

A WellLived Life Book 1 BirgitChapter 4 Calm Before the Storm

June 1977 When I got home, I grabbed a Coke and some chips and went right to my room. I didn’t think I could deal with my parents or Jeff or Stephanie. I just needed to be by myself. That wouldn’t seem odd to anyone, because I often went to my room to read. In addition, I now had the TV I’d received for my birthday. I flipped it on to WXIX Channel 19 and reruns of Gilligan’s Island and Green Acres played in the background while I read. I had to get my mind clear for the final exams that...

July, 1982, Milford, Ohio I woke up early on Friday morning to make breakfast for Kara and her mom before she went to work. Mrs. Blanchard was surprised, but very pleased. After her mom left for work, Kara gave me a fierce kiss. “Thanks for staying in and cooking breakfast for us,” Kara said. “I hope that doesn’t cause you trouble with Stephanie, with you breaking your normal routine.” “Don’t worry about it,” I said, kissing her back. “We got in a bit later than I expected, and she’ll...

July, 1983, Chicago, Illinois After Rosie left, I stripped the sheets from my bed, as well as the cover of the duvet, and tossed everything into the washing machine. I lit a lavender candle in the room, and then swept and dusted. I did a quick spot-check of the rest of the house and noticed that the tub in the sauna needed to be cleaned. I scrubbed it, then mopped the sauna floor with a damp sponge mop. I finished cleaning the sauna about the time the washing machine finished, so I moved...

May 26, 1991, Iron Mountain, Michigan “Shall we see if we can find a farm?” I asked at breakfast on Sunday morning. “That sounds like a great idea,” Jessica said. “There’s a visitor’s bureau in town,” Kara said. “I saw it when we were here the first time.” “I’m sorry I ruined that vacation,” Jessica said. “Ruined?” I protested. “Are you kidding? March 25, 2000, Chicago, Illinois “What time do I need to have you home?” “8:00pm will be fine,” Misty replied. “My parents are in Normal visiting my brother at Illinois State. They aren’t supposed to be home before 10:00pm.” Misty and I were in my car on the way to the NIKA apartment which, fortunately, was not being used. June 1977 Friday ended up being a non-event. The more I thought about it, the more I was sure that there was no way on this earth I could say what happened between Birgit and me was a sin. Calling it a sin would debase it into a meaningless act. I could never do that. And the more I thought about Jennie McGrath, the more sure I was that I couldn’t call what she did for me a sin, either. If the church was right, I was going to hell. And frankly, there was no way that could be true. So I...

May 11, 1992, Chicago, Illinois Monday was turning out to be a LONG day. After my run and talk with Gina, and my talk with Elyse, I had a full day at the office scheduled. January 19, 1989, En-Route from LAX to ORD When the engines of the plane started, Jeri reached over and took my hand. She held it while we pushed away from the gate, and taxied for takeoff. Her grip tightened a bit as we hurtled down the runway, but nothing like the death grip she’d had on my arm for the flight out. The plane roared its way into the air and once we leveled out, Jeri’s grip loosened but she didn’t let go of my hand. “How are you doing?” I asked with a touch of...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 3 JessicaChapter 52 Lifestyle Choices

June 11, 1989, Chicago, Illinois It was just after 3:00am when I kissed Trish goodbye. She’d been an enthusiastic, energetic, and adventurous lover. We’d done just about anything either of us could think of, though her breasts weren’t large enough for a tit-fuck. The last time had been in the shower where we’d ostensibly gone to clean up afterwards, but instead I ended up taking her from behind as she leaned against the wall of the shower. “I think I’ll have you again, Steve Adams,” she...

A WellLived Life Book 1 BirgitChapter 38 Freshman Year Ends

May 1978 The first couple of weeks in May were busy with school, work, and friends. Except for Becky, I didn’t even have any dates. But I was OK with that. Well, almost OK. I wanted to see Anna, but it likely wasn’t going to happen until school was out. I had tutoring sessions with Melanie, but she still wouldn’t talk to me about anything other than Spanish. Barely a hello. I was grateful for the tutoring, but it was maddening seeing my friend this way. I hoped someday she could understand...

A WellLived Life Book 6 Kara IChapter 44 Spring Break 1982 Part I

March, 1982, Milford, Ohio As I drove along I-65, I thought about what Stephanie had asked for and what Bethany had said without even knowing about the request. Of course, because Bethany and I were so in tune, she might have actually had an idea that I was struggling with getting involved with my sister again. I kept turning it over and over in my mind and I kept coming to the same conclusion — that I shouldn’t do it. I was torn between doing what Stephanie wanted and doing what Kara and...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 6 SamanthaChapter 21 Georg and Maria

September 7, 1992, Chicago, Illinois “That went reasonably well,” Michelle said when her parents drove off. “There were a few times I thought my expression would give away something I shouldn’t. You were messing with me, weren’t you?” She grabbed both my hands and smiled, “I was telling the truth, in my own way. Thank you!” She leaned forward and kissed my cheek. “So, what’s left?” I asked. “To visit UofC tomorrow and formally withdraw from classes. To spend some time with you and your...

A WellLived Life Book 6 Kara IChapter 14 A Southern Belle a Surprise Proposal two Cheerleaders an Old Flame and a Girl Back Home Part I

October 1981, Chicago, Illinois I arrived back at the apartment just before 10:00pm and saw the address for the party. I decided I wasn’t particularly interested in going so I put on some music, poured myself a glass of wine, and started reading more about Russia. I was alternating between the history and culture book and the Communist Party book, decided on the history and culture book for this time. I didn’t get much reading done because I was thinking about Tatyana, which led me to...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 9 KamiChapter 38 And Sometimes It Stinks To Be Big

January 23, 1996, Chicago, Illinois “Father, bless!” I said, greeting Father Basil with upturned palms. “Bless you, Stephen,” he said as I kissed his hand. The waiter showed us to a quiet table along the wall of Roditys in Greektown. He took our drink orders and was back quickly. We placed our food orders right away and he left to put them in with the kitchen. “I’m not quite sure how to address this, so I’m just going to ask you bluntly. Are you the father of Michelle’s baby?” I shook my...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 8 NIKAChapter 68 The Rules

June 29, 1995, Chicago, Illinois On Thursday, I finally had lunch with Melissa again, something I hadn’t been looking forward to. Much like with Cèlia, Melissa and I had passed an inflection point and I was left with sub-optimal paths forward. I’d been struggling with the possible solutions, and all of them had pitfalls. When I walked into Takumi, I had something of a plan. Whether it was good or not would only be known once everything played out. “I spoke to my wives,” I said after we’d...

December 5, 2000, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota “I had a good time last night,” I said. “I was surprised you invited a friend!” Mary laughed as we walked into the exam room, “Naomi had a good time as well. You know what a Resident’s life is like.” I nodded, “No social life.” “Exactly. You guys seemed to hit it off pretty well.” “Yes, but I’m not here for that!” “You’re everywhere for that, and you know it!” I couldn’t help but laugh. “Let’s just say that you hit the sweet spot -...

Partnerships

Batman (TAS) – Partnerships “This party is so bo-o-ring...”, was what Selina Kyle whispered to herself inside another fundraiser for some Gotham City’s charity in Gotham’s Museum. She went to the party by invitation of Hamilton Weir, a good friend and former boyfriend of hers. But, by her face, the brunette wasn’t to keen to join the usual chit-chat of celebrities and socialites talking about their lives and how they are rich, nice and bought a new house or a car. The boredom at Selina’s...

A WellLived Life Book 3 PiaChapter 25 The Puzzle and the Cat Part II

March 1980, Hovås/Göteborg, Sweden I woke early as usual, but just enjoyed being in bed with Katt. When she woke, she hopped out of bed and pulled a robe out of her closet and handed it to me. “There’s a spare toothbrush in the bathroom. Go have your shower, then we’ll have breakfast after I have my shower.” I quickly showered and brushed my teeth, and went back to Katt’s room. She went to shower and came back a few minutes later. She dressed, and I got a very good look at her sexy body...

April 5, 1997, Chicago, Illinois “You missed cuddles this morning!” Birgit said accusingly when I walked into the house about 9:30am. “I know, Pumpkin, but I had a work emergency and had to go see Aunt Joyce and Grandpa A.” “And now we have to get ready for karate!” “I know. We’ll have some family time this afternoon. I don’t have any plans.” “Good!” I hugged her and the rest of the kids, then went to find Kara. We hugged and kissed, and went straight upstairs to get ready for...

September 3, 1989, Chicago, Illinois “Good morning, Sensei,” I said, bowing to Sensei Jim. “Good morning!” he said waving me to a chair in his office. “How was your trip?” I asked. “Enlightening. I spent most of my time acting as a manservant to Sensei Robert and Sensei Hiro.” “He who will lead, must first serve,” I said. “Someday, I’m going to send you to Sensei Hiro, should he live long enough. You understand.” “Does that mean you are now 6th Dan?” I...

October 29, 2000, Chicago, Illinois Birgit followed me as far as the stairs, then scooted upstairs when I went to the front door and opened it. “Hi!” Sophie said. “Hi!” I replied and held the door open so she could come into the house. I closed the door behind her then led her to my study where I waited until she went in, and then walked in, closing the door behind me. I nodded to one of the wingback chairs, she sat down in one, and I sat down in the other. “Is something wrong?” she...

A WellLived Life Book 8 StephieChapter 61 Anala Part II

August, 1983, Chicago, Illinois I walked in the near 90°F heat to Carla’s place. I was grateful that the humidity of the morning had dropped significantly; otherwise the heat would have been unbearable. By the time I walked up the steps to the apartment over the photography studio and knocked on her door, I had broken into a light sweat. Carla answered almost immediately and invited me inside her studio apartment. The air was moderately cool, and the window air conditioner was running full...

July 1982, Milford, Ohio On Tuesday morning, I kissed Kara goodbye and headed to my parents’ house for my usual morning routine with my little sister. She was happy that I could spend the morning with her and asked to take a walk, so we weren’t in the house with my mom. “Let me guess — this walk will end in the clearing,” I said with a smile. “Yes,” she said, taking my hand as we walked down Overlook towards Klondyke. As usual, we turned around and walked back, taking the path to the...

March 13, 1994, Chicago, Illinois “Hi, Steve!” Ailea said when she opened the door. “Hi,” I replied, accepting the offered hug. There was no touching of lips, just of cheeks, and I wondered if I’d misread her intentions at her birthday lunch, or if, perhaps, she detected my reluctance to return the offered affection. “Lunch is ready, so go ahead and sit. I’ll bring it in from the kitchen.” I went to the low table, sat down, and a minute later, Ailea brought miso soup and sushi, our usual...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 10 BridgetChapter 72 An Explosive Discovery

April 3, 1997, Dallas, Texas “Remember what I said about drinking too much,” I said, as I poured bourbon into three cups. We’d stopped at a liquor store, bought a bottle of Blanton’s, and then returned to the small suite I’d reserved at the Westin. Deborah’s room was down the hall, and Krissy’s was two floors below. Krissy’s comment had caught me a bit off guard, but I hadn’t reacted visibly. I didn’t know her quite well enough to know if she’d been teasing with Deborah, so I was being...

September 1, 1987, Chicago, Illinois “I heard that you have some kind of plan to help Ed,” I said to Connie. “There’s no plan,” she replied. “A witness who saw the shopkeeper alive after Ed left came forward.” That sounded convenient, and I wondered if the witness was real or someone that Anthony had put forward to solve the problem. Certainly, the videotape was real, because I couldn’t imagine how Anthony could have faked that, but the witness? Who knew? “So is he being released? Or is...

August 17, 1997, Chicago, Illinois We finished lunch and Marissa and the younger kids went to play, but Natalie sat with the adults to talk, with coffee, tea, or soft drinks. The Sarcus were very comfortable, but the Heaths were still struggling. But, vitally, they hadn’t left and hadn’t insisted Natalie leave the group. “Can you explain how you developed this attitude and approach?” Chris asked. July 1979 — Falkenberg, Sweden On Friday, when I got back from my run, Pam was in her bra and panties again. I whistled at her, she giggled, then finished dressing. I showered, and we went to breakfast and finished up our last day. Once class was done, we were pretty much free. On Saturday, we’d have several optional activities and then on Sunday we’d head back to our host families. After dinner on Friday, I took Pam’s hand and we walked towards the river. July 1980, Over the North Atlantic We reached cruising altitude, and I settled back to read my book. Pam raised the armrest between us, snuggled close to me and read as well. The cabin crew offered drinks, and I had my first Coke in a year! Meal service began about an hour and a half into the flight. After the cabin crew picked up the trays and offered drinks again, they passed once more, offering headsets for the movie. Trevor and Maria took them, but Pam and I didn’t, instead we turned on...

November 8, 1993, Chicago, Illinois A dark fog swirled before my eyes as I tried to take stock. My head hurt, badly. I felt something on my face and realized, dimly, it was an oxygen mask. My right hand was uncomfortable and I recognized the feeling of an IV and pulse-oximeter. My left arm ached fiercely. On my chest I felt the pads and wires of an EKG. I didn’t feel anything else wrong as I continued taking inventory. I tried to open my eyes, but the fog didn’t clear. I tried to speak, but...

August, 1983, Chicago, Illinois In the morning Anala and I ran as we had the previous time, then showered together, carefully washing each other’s bodies in an intimate but non-sexual way. After our shower we went to the kitchen and I made breakfast and we sat down to eat. “Steve, may I make a suggestion?” she asked. “Sure.” “Broaden your circle of friends. March 1979 Monday was back to the normal routine of school. May 1979 The limo dropped me at home about 9:00pm. I took my stuff to my room, stripped, and hung up the tux. The rest of the things went into the hamper. I took a shower, put on shorts and a t-shirt, and walked down the hall into my dad’s office. I saw no reason to put this off any longer. “Stephen, you need to explain yourself!” my mom demanded. “I was in Mrs. McGrath’s, well, Mrs. Sanders’ now, wedding, as I said.” “You walked her down the aisle! When we finished, Karin held me tight and refused to let me move off of her. “Sleep there, please,” she whispered.
