“Who the fuck is Anthony Cicilioni?” Elyse asked.

I didn’t have much choice but to tell her, and once I did, she’d know way more than she should. But I didn’t see a way around it.

“Joyce’s brother-in-law. He’s married to Connie.”

“Joyce? No! Please tell me that we’re not fucking living The Firm!”

I smiled, “We aren’t. All of Joyce’s businesses and investments are completely legit.”

“But your mentor, the Don, sure as heck wasn’t, was he?”

“No.”

“Jesus, Steve! You took investment money from the fucking Mafia! Are you completely insane?”

“No, I did NOT take investment money from the Mafia. I took investment money from my close friend and successful businessman, Joseph Grossi, Senior. His granddaughter, who, as I just said, is totally legitimate, inherited his shares. It was personal, Elyse.”

“Yeah, and how the fuck could you be sure that it wouldn’t end up under Mafia control?”

“Because I knew the man, and trusted him. And he trusted me. He made exactly one mistake I’m aware of, but he never, ever forced me or coerced me into doing anything. I went to HIM, Elyse. Who do you think got Josh Benton beat up?”

Well, one mistake I was going to tell Elyse about. She did NOT need to know about Ed’s involvement.

“Oh sure, because being in debt to the Mafia is a PERFECT way to keep your business away from them!”

“Elyse, I knew exactly what I was doing when I accepted the investment money he offered. He put Joyce on the board and SHE isn’t, and never has been, in the Mafia. Did she know what was going on? Of course she did. She’s no idiot. She advised me along the way. And do you want to know why I was so sure?”

“Go on,” she said, doubtfully.

“Joyce and I broke up after sleeping together, he knew it, and not only am I still alive, but when it happened, he took MY side!”

Which wasn’t exactly the way things unfolded, but for the purposes of this conversation it was accurate enough.

“Seriously?”

“You’ve read my journals, so you know what happened between Kara and Joyce. And why I kicked Joyce out of my life for a time. He took my side. His one mistake was giving Anthony control of the underworld operations.”

“So why is Anthony pissed at you? Because you took Connie’s virginity?” She grinned evilly, “All THREE of them, in fact!”

I laughed, “There is no way he knows that. If he did, Connie would be dead. I guarantee you she played the blushing, virginal bride for him.”

“Fuck me gently with a chainsaw!” Elyse laughed. “After you got all three of her cherries? Wow!”

“Heathers?” I laughed. “Perfect! And yeah, if he found out, he’d kill her. Anyway, Don Joseph asked me to be a friend to Anthony as I had been to him, if you know what I mean. And that was the genesis of the problem. You see, another reason I was confident about taking the money from Don Joseph was that I was under his protection here, and minus a couple of very exciting adventures of my own making, he ensured I wasn’t in the muscle-side of the business. I just did computer stuff.

“Anthony tried to change that and I basically told him to fuck off. Connie tried to change my mind and I told her the same thing. Then she threatened me. They escalated by showing up unannounced in Indianapolis. Then they threatened Becky. And they sent a guy to threaten me. That’s when I decided I was going to put an end to it, one way or the other. I turned that messenger, and he and I drove down to Ohio and did a Don Corleone/Luca Brasi thing on them. You know, the contract for Johnnie Fontane?”

“No! Fucking! Way!”

“My partner held a gun to Connie’s head while Anthony and I negotiated.”

“Jesus, Steve! And I thought Go-Karts were dangerous! Wait! Wait! That visit in Indianapolis, that’s why Casey was fired! Holy shit!”

“Yes. Connie called, pretending to be Anthony’s secretary, and said she needed the address for a meeting. Casey went to my office and got Jessica’s address from my personal address book.”

“God, no wonder you fired him!”

“And that’s where this tale ends. It has to, for what I hope are very obvious reasons. But I know what happened now, and I know how to put an end to it.”

Elyse’s eyes narrowed, “Did you have ANYTHING to do with Lisa’s fiancé’s death?”

“Look, you REALLY do not want to know any more than you already do. You know too much as it is. But I’ll answer that question,” I said, then I grinned, “This one time, Elyse, I’ll let you ask me about my business. But it’s the last one. I was concerned that I had been involved, but it turns out Lisa personally hired the guy to do it. It was NOT a mob hit.”

Because, as I thought about it, she got to him FIRST.

“OK. So, what are you going to do? Or can’t you tell me?”

“I don’t know yet. I need to formulate a response. But, you know my way of thinking.”

Elyse smiled, and gave me the setup line, “What is best in life?”

I did my best Arnold Schwarzenegger impersonation, “Crush your enemies. See them driven before you. Hear the lamentations of their women.”

Elyse grinned, “I just had the most wonderful, evil thought. Does Littleton have a daughter or a granddaughter?”

“Then you’ll hear moaning, not lamentation,” I chuckled.

“Go back to your office!” Elyse laughed. “And be careful, Steve. A lot of people depend on you.”

I nodded, “I know.”

Instead of going to my office, I went into the ‘Orr’ room and dialed the number for Global Security Services.

“Colonel Anisimova, please,” I said when the receptionist answered. “This is Stephen Rayevich calling.”

A minute later she came on the line.

“Good morning, Stepa! How are you?”

“Quite well, Comrade Colonel! How is the Colonel this morning?”

She laughed, “Oh stop it! You know I’m no KGB officer!”

“You will always be my dear friend, the Comrade Colonel! And I need the Colonel’s help today.”

“Of course, Stepa! How may I help you?”

“I need some information on a few people, but without them knowing I’m gathering the information.”

“Certainly. What information do you require?”

“Home address, family, work, school, basically a background dossier.”

“Give me the names, please, and any information you might have.”

I gave her the basic details for Brandon Littleton and John Milton, and the sketchy details I knew about Peter Scuderi, and my suspicion he was involved in the problems I was having with Littleton. I purposefully left out the connection to ‘Little Tony’ as I wanted to see what Patrick’s company was able to dig up.

“This is about the attorney who has been giving you trouble all these years?”

“Yes. And if you know any Bulgarians...” I teased.

She laughed, “I was not in that part of the Committee, Stepa, as you well know! My job was to keep people alive!”

“Yes, of course! How long do you think it will take to get the information?”

“It depends on how difficult it is to find information on Peter Scuderi. The lawyer and your client should be straightforward. I will call you in about a week with what we’ve found.”

“Thanks, Katya, I appreciate it. Charge this against my retainer, please.”

“Yes, of course!”

“Come visit when you have a chance.”

“Perhaps after your trip to Japan.”

“We’d be happy to see you!”

I hung up and went back to my office. I still had no idea what I was going to do, but having additional information wouldn’t hurt. In the end, there was going to have to be some kind of showdown with ‘Little Tony’ and the more information I had, the better I’d be able to manage the situation. Perhaps there was more information I could glean. I pulled Bert’s résumé up in my email, wrote down the phone number listed for work, and went back to the ‘Orr’ room to call him.

“Hey, Bert. It’s Steve.”

“Steve! Thanks for hiring me!”

“Thank Charlie, she’s the hiring manager!”

“Well, thank you, too. What can I do for you?”

“Do you have Jefferson Greene’s phone number by any chance?”

“Sure. He works for SKC Consulting here in Boston. One sec.”

He found the number and read it to me.

“Thinking of hiring him?” Bert asked.

“No. I just had a question for him about BLS, that’s all.”

“The guys you bought out?”

“Yes. What start date did you agree with Charlie?”

“June 13th.”

“See you then. Well, for one day, maybe. I leave for Japan on the 15th.”

“Sounds fun! See you in a month!”

I said ‘goodbye’ then hung up and dialed the number he had given me. I asked for Jefferson and they put my call through to him.

“Jefferson, it’s Steve Adams,” I said.

“Steve? How are you? What can I do for you?”

“I’m good. And you can answer a couple of questions, if you would. And I promise absolutely nothing bad will happen no matter what your answers are.”

“Uh, OK,” he said warily.

“Do you know a man named Peter Scuderi?”

“Scuderi? Scuderi. Yeah, the recruiter who got me the gig with BLS. Why?”

Another piece fell into place and led me to ask the next question.

“Did he suggest to you that you steal our source code?”

“Steve...”

“Look, we both know what happened, and you know I gave you a second chance. I’m trying to track something down and I need to know the answer. And I need you not to say anything to anyone about me asking.”

“Yeah, he asked me to do it. And said he’d get a big signing bonus for me if I could.”

“Was that after you agreed to take the job?”

“Yeah. He offered to quintuple the signing bonus. I’m really sorry.”

“I told you it was forgiven. You won’t hear me mention this again. And if you’re ever in Chicago, let me know. We’ll have lunch.”

“I owe you. Big time.”

Yes indeed, he did. And I might collect on that debt at some point. We finished our call and I went back to my office. More pieces were falling into place. I was seeing the ‘Black Hand’ of ‘Little Tony’ Cicilioni all over the place. A day of reckoning was coming. It was just a matter of how best to proceed. Anthony may have plotted and schemed, but I plotted and schemed as well, and I was the best of plotters.

May 19, 1994, Chicago, Illinois

“Steve Adams, I’d like you to meet Mark and Melissa Mascioli,” Dante said when I walked into the lobby of Shaw’s Crab House.

“Pleased to meet you both,” I said, extending my hand to Mark.

We shook hands and I sized him up. He was 6’ tall, blonde, about my age, and had a bit of a beer-belly. His handshake was firm and he kept good eye contact. I turned to Melissa and we shook as well, though her handshake was soft. She was about 5’8”, a few years younger than I was, and also had blonde hair, blue eyes, and a winning smile. She was thin, but not terribly so.

“Brother and sister?” I guessed.

“Yes,” Mark said.

“Let’s sit and we can talk,” Dante said.

He spoke to the maître d’, and we were led to a quiet table in the corner of the dining room. We sat, and after we ordered drinks, Dante explained the situation.

“Mark and Melissa signed a letter of intent on Monday morning,” he said. “There’s a bit of due diligence remaining, but the financing is in place, so from my perspective, we’re good to go. I’m sure there won’t be any problems with their due diligence, so I wanted to get them in front of you as soon as possible. Hopefully, you won’t hate them like you hate me!”

He laughed, showing he was kidding. Two could play the same game, though.

“Naaah, I don’t hate you, Dante,” I said flatly. “That would require an emotional commitment on my part.”

Dante and Mark laughed and Melissa simply shook her head.

“Good one!” Dante said. “Mark, Melissa, as you can see, Steve has a pretty good sense of humor, though he can be a real bastard when it’s called for.”

“And it takes one to know one,” I rejoined with a smile. “Mark, what’s your background?”

“I’m a double-E and went to MIT,” Mark said. “She’s a CS major who went to CalTech.”

“Originally from Chicago?” I asked.

“Yes,” Mike said. “Oakbrook Terrace. Our parents moved to Naperville a couple of years ago. My wife and I live in Northbrook. Dante says you’re a CS major from IIT and you live in the city.”

I nodded, “That’s right. What will the transition look like?”

“I’ll be a ‘Consulting Engineer’ for the next six months,” Dante interjected. “Mostly it’ll be by phone, but I’ll go to meetings and assist with technical problems with any existing projects. Mark and Melissa intend to keep the contracts we have with you in place at least for the next year.”

I nodded, “Just remember, the software license is perpetual, but requires royalties on each sale, even if all other parts of the contract lapse.”

“I made that quite clear,” Dante said. “Mark?”

“We’re still formulating our future development plans for testing equipment, but the current hardware upgrades will certainly continue as they have, with you providing the software upgrades.”

“Good,” I said. “I hope we can have a long, fruitful relationship.”

The waiter came to take our orders and then left to hand them into the kitchen.

“Dante tells us you have something of a strange family life,” Melissa said.

“I suppose that’s true. Seven kids by four women is out of the ordinary.”

“Say WHAT?!” she gasped. “Seriously?”

“Seriously. I guess Dante didn’t tell you HOW strange!”

“Uh, no, he just mentioned that you had a bunch of kids and a complicated family relationship.”

“That’s one way to put it,” I grinned. “Are both of you married?”

“Just me,” Mark said. “One kid, a boy. He’s three.”

“I’m curious as to what kind of experience you have running a company like this.”

“About as much as you had, I guess,” Melissa said. “At least according to Dante.”

I smiled, “Touché.”

The question I really wanted to ask was how this was being financed, but there wasn’t any reasonable way to do that. Dante had said the financing was in place, which more or less foreclosed exploring the issue. I knew that the purchase price had to have been steep, and then Dante would have charged a premium to act as a ‘consulting engineer’ as he called it.

Our soup and salads arrived and we began eating. From what I could tell so far, I felt I could get along with these two and continue the relationship that had made both firms a significant amount of money over the past eight years. I didn’t detect any warning signs, and the caution from Dante about the contracts was reasonable, as Mark and Melissa might decide to take the company in a different direction.

“Are you keeping the name?” I asked.

“At least for now,” Mark said. “DP Engineering has a good reputation.”

“Dante has told us a bit about your company,” Melissa said. “But not much. How big is your staff?”

Dante choked on the sip of scotch he’d just taken, immediately causing MY mind to descend into the gutter with his. I didn’t know them well enough to say what popped into my mind, so I just ignored the obvious double-entendre, which I didn’t think was intended. Mark was smirking, too, and he had obviously caught it as well.

“We have about sixty-five employees,” I said, forcing on my poker face. “There are a couple of programmers who have worked on the DP Engineering stuff almost from the start, and they’ll stay on the project. And I’ll be involved, obviously. I promise we’ll keep the level of support as it has been.”

“So...” Mark grinned, “Your staff is big enough to get the job done and keep everyone satisfied?”

At that point, I couldn’t keep a straight face anymore and started laughing along with Dante and Mark. Dante was almost in tears he was laughing so hard. Melissa, on the other hand, turned red and shook her head.

“I guess I walked right into that one, didn’t I?” Melissa said ruefully.

A WellLived Life 2 Book 5 MichelleChapter 78 Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous Part II

May 15, 1992, Glencoe, Illinois “Join me in my study, if you would,” Noel Spurgeon said when we finished our dessert. It had been an interesting evening. Samantha and I had talked for a bit before we’d been summoned to dinner. The meal had been prepared by a chef and was served by a white-coated young man. Again, this was a far cry from Lois at the van Hoeks’ house. What wasn’t a far cry was the fact that I was having dinner with a man who knew I was going to be sleeping with his daughter...

A WellLived Life Book 6 Kara IChapter 14 A Southern Belle a Surprise Proposal two Cheerleaders an Old Flame and a Girl Back Home Part I

October 1981, Chicago, Illinois I arrived back at the apartment just before 10:00pm and saw the address for the party. I decided I wasn’t particularly interested in going so I put on some music, poured myself a glass of wine, and started reading more about Russia. I was alternating between the history and culture book and the Communist Party book, decided on the history and culture book for this time. I didn’t get much reading done because I was thinking about Tatyana, which led me to...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 7 SakurakoChapter 57 Land of the Rising Sun Part III

June 23, 1994, Oguni, Yamagata Prefecture, Japan My first week in Japan flew by, and a routine developed. Sakurako would wake me; I’d exercise and run, then shower and have breakfast, and share tea with Sakurako. After breakfast, I’d meditate, and then have my training session. After lunch, I’d work in the garden, or, as I had this day, wash the floors in the house. Hiroshi would accompany me back to the cottage and we’d talk while I washed up and dressed for dinner. After dinner, I’d spend...

June 15, 1994, Chicago, Illinois “That’s everything, I think,” I said. “My luggage is in the trunk of the car, I have my passport, tickets, and money, both dollars and yen. I can’t think of anything else.” “I’ll see you in five weeks,” Elyse said, giving me a quick hug. “Did you see they rioted in Vancouver last night because they lost the Stanley Cup?” I chuckled, “Only Canadians would riot when they LOSE the Cup! I did see that on the front page of the Trib. Are we ready?” “Michelle and...

May 26, 1991, Iron Mountain, Michigan “Shall we see if we can find a farm?” I asked at breakfast on Sunday morning. “That sounds like a great idea,” Jessica said. “There’s a visitor’s bureau in town,” Kara said. “I saw it when we were here the first time.” “I’m sorry I ruined that vacation,” Jessica said. “Ruined?” I protested. “Are you kidding? Getting you back was way more important than a few days of vacation!” “I agree,” Kara added. “Jess, you know exactly how bad off Steve was...

A WellLived Life Book 10 The WifeChapter 14 Katherine Victoria Will

January, 1985, Chicago, Illinois I arrived back in Hyde Park about ten minutes before the end of the Super Bowl. It didn’t look like it had been much of a contest, given that the score was 38-16, with San Francisco trouncing Miami. I grabbed a Coke and some chips and sat down on the couch next to Julia and Dave. In the room, besides my housemates, were Jamie, Kenneth, Kurt, Kathy, Jorge, George, Charlie, Bert, and Wen. “Julia, I got approval from both guys in Cincinnati,” I said. She...

Loosening Up Book 9 Fantasies Among the WeedsChapter 2 Phi Theta Rho Party Again

Late on Saturday afternoon Dave shifted into his job as one of the bartenders for the Circle. Just as he was ready for a first customer, Emma came racing up to the bar. She was alone and only wearing a monokini, unlike a few hours earlier when her parents and younger sister had visited and she was dressed conservatively. She extended her body over the bar and kissed Dave. “Thank you for being so nice to my parents and sister.” “Of course. They’re nice people. I take it they don’t know a...

July 22, 2000, Chicago, Illinois “Albert, do you have everything packed?” Mom asked. “Yes, Mom!” I replied, rolling my eyes because she’d asked before I went to bed. “He’ll be fine, Babe,” Dad said. “Let’s walk to the hospital.” I usually didn’t get up early, but Dad had suggested it would help Mom if I walked to the hospital with her because I was leaving to see Jane for three weeks. August 1981, Chicago, Illinois On Sunday morning, I made my usual call to Karin. I described everything in the apartment and all the things I’d done during the week, including the reception. Both of us would start school in a week and we were both looking forward to it. When we finished talking, I went out for my run, showered, and ate breakfast. I made some tea, started a load of laundry, and then turned on the stereo. I put on an REO Speedwagon album and then relaxed on the couch with the...

August 21, 1989, Chicago, Illinois “Unbelievable,” I said when I read the headline from the Chicago Tribune. “It says here that Solidarity activist Tadeusz Mazowiecki was nominated to be Prime Minister of Poland.” I hadn’t had a chance to read the paper on Sunday because it hadn’t been delivered before we left for the race track in Michigan. “So now what?” Kara asked. “We’re in totally uncharted territory. June 1977 When I got home, I grabbed a Coke and some chips and went right to my room. I didn’t think I could deal with my parents or Jeff or Stephanie. I just needed to be by myself. That wouldn’t seem odd to anyone, because I often went to my room to read. In addition, I now had the TV I’d received for my birthday. I flipped it on to WXIX Channel 19 and reruns of Gilligan’s Island and Green Acres played in the background while I read. I had to get my mind clear for the final exams that...

July, 1983, Chicago, Illinois I woke up early on the First of July, because my body clock was still set to Swedish time. June 1977 Friday ended up being a non-event. The more I thought about it, the more I was sure that there was no way on this earth I could say what happened between Birgit and me was a sin. Calling it a sin would debase it into a meaningless act. I could never do that. And the more I thought about Jennie McGrath, the more sure I was that I couldn’t call what she did for me a sin, either. If the church was right, I was going to hell. And frankly, there was no way that could be true. So I...

“So, how should we do these Stone’s songs?” Phil asked at our rehearsal session. “I think we all know the music, we just need to come up with a pretty awesome arrangement; we don’t want to sound like yet another cheap cover band.” “I had some ideas, if it’s okay for me to make some suggestions,” Allison said. “Of course it is,” Phil said. “Everyone can have a say, there’s no rule that says you can’t participate in the discussion.” “Thanks, Phil, I guess being the newest here, I’m a bit...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 5 MichelleChapter 77 Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous Part I

May 11, 1992, Chicago, Illinois Monday was turning out to be a LONG day. After my run and talk with Gina, and my talk with Elyse, I had a full day at the office scheduled. First was our leadership meeting in the morning, and then I had status meetings with each team. At lunch I’d gone to see Siobhán and explained that I was going to break off the sexual relationship, but that I wanted to remain friends. She was disappointed, but admitted that Thursday would have been the last time, since she...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 3 JessicaChapter 23 So Now You Turn Back Into Diana Prince

January 19, 1989, En-Route from LAX to ORD When the engines of the plane started, Jeri reached over and took my hand. She held it while we pushed away from the gate, and taxied for takeoff. Her grip tightened a bit as we hurtled down the runway, but nothing like the death grip she’d had on my arm for the flight out. The plane roared its way into the air and once we leveled out, Jeri’s grip loosened but she didn’t let go of my hand. “How are you doing?” I asked with a touch of...

Sins from my Stepmother Complete Book 1

I My name is Teddy Carlson. I’m twenty-two years old and I fucked my stepmother. Not just once in some momentary lapse of judgement. But again and again…and again. Before you judge me, there’s a few things you need to understand. First, Dad and I never exactly got on like a house on fire. He was the CIO of a large hedge fund which meant that he wasn’t around much. He travelled to Europe regularly and commuted during the week to Manhattan for meetings. When he was home, he was either...

A WellLived Life Book 6 Kara IChapter 16 A Southern Belle a Surprise Proposal two Cheerleaders an Old Flame and a Girl Back Home Part I

October 1981, Chicago, Illinois I went to my room, closed the door and dialed my old number in Milford and Stephanie answered. “Hi, Stephanie!” “Hey, Big Bro! How’s Chicago?” “Pretty good. A lot of stuff is happening. But I have a favor to ask. Well, really, it’s a favor from Ed. I’m coming home this weekend and I was wondering if I could borrow the keys to the apartment.” “You and Kara? On Saturday? I’m sure the answer is yes. Where are you staying?” “I was going to call Mrs. Spencer...

A WellLived Life Book 7 Kara IIChapter 34 Old Routines and New Ideas

September 1982, Chicago, Illinois The weekend was quiet and besides homework, I worked on the program changes for Frank, called Karin, Tatyana, and Kara, and hung out with my usual study group. Monday was refreshingly normal. On Tuesday morning, I handed Katy my completed intake form. She put it in an envelope and stuck it in her bag. She said she’d let me know soon about the interview. On Tuesday afternoon, after having lunch with Stephie, I made my rounds and then I headed over to Sigma...

A WellLived Life Book 7 Kara IIChapter 35 An Interview and Some New Friends

October 1982, Chicago, Illinois The drive back to Chicago was as uneventful as usual, and I arrived at the apartment just before 6:00pm. When I arrived, Elyse and Stephie were sitting on the couch and Jackie was sitting on the loveseat. Stephie hopped up as I opened the door and greeted me with a hug and a kiss. “Hi, Peaches!” I said. “Glad you’re home, Yankee!” “Hi, Steve,” Elyse and Jackie both said. “Hey,” I replied. “How was the weekend?” “Well, it was just Kurt with me, Stephie,...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 6 SamanthaChapter 20 Get Thee to a Nunnery

September 4, 1992, Chicago, Illinois “These are really interesting pieces,” I said to Siobhán. Kimmy, Elyse, and I were reviewing the two completed pieces that she’d done as examples of what the series would look like. “You don’t like them?” Siobhán asked pensively. “No, I do! Why would you think I didn’t?” “Usually when someone says ‘interesting’ about abstract art it means they don’t like it.” “Sorry, in this case I meant it. Maybe ‘intriguing’ would have been a better word.” She...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 8 NIKAChapter 68 The Rules

June 29, 1995, Chicago, Illinois On Thursday, I finally had lunch with Melissa again, something I hadn’t been looking forward to. Much like with Cèlia, Melissa and I had passed an inflection point and I was left with sub-optimal paths forward. I’d been struggling with the possible solutions, and all of them had pitfalls. When I walked into Takumi, I had something of a plan. Whether it was good or not would only be known once everything played out. “I spoke to my wives,” I said after we’d...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 3 JessicaChapter 52 Lifestyle Choices

June 11, 1989, Chicago, Illinois It was just after 3:00am when I kissed Trish goodbye. She’d been an enthusiastic, energetic, and adventurous lover. We’d done just about anything either of us could think of, though her breasts weren’t large enough for a tit-fuck. The last time had been in the shower where we’d ostensibly gone to clean up afterwards, but instead I ended up taking her from behind as she leaned against the wall of the shower. “I think I’ll have you again, Steve Adams,” she...

A WellLived Life Book 1 BirgitChapter 38 Freshman Year Ends

May 1978 The first couple of weeks in May were busy with school, work, and friends. Except for Becky, I didn’t even have any dates. But I was OK with that. Well, almost OK. I wanted to see Anna, but it likely wasn’t going to happen until school was out. I had tutoring sessions with Melanie, but she still wouldn’t talk to me about anything other than Spanish. Barely a hello. I was grateful for the tutoring, but it was maddening seeing my friend this way. I hoped someday she could understand...

A WellLived Life Book 6 Kara IChapter 44 Spring Break 1982 Part I

March, 1982, Milford, Ohio As I drove along I-65, I thought about what Stephanie had asked for and what Bethany had said without even knowing about the request. Of course, because Bethany and I were so in tune, she might have actually had an idea that I was struggling with getting involved with my sister again. I kept turning it over and over in my mind and I kept coming to the same conclusion — that I shouldn’t do it. I was torn between doing what Stephanie wanted and doing what Kara and...

September 7, 1992, Chicago, Illinois “That went reasonably well,” Michelle said when her parents drove off. “There were a few times I thought my expression would give away something I shouldn’t. You were messing with me, weren’t you?” She grabbed both my hands and smiled, “I was telling the truth, in my own way. Thank you!” She leaned forward and kissed my cheek. “So, what’s left?” I asked. “To visit UofC tomorrow and formally withdraw from classes. To spend some time with you and your...

August 15, 2000, Chicago, Illinois “Whoa!” Cynthia declared, as she turned the pages in The New Joy of Sex. “All these positions! I want to try them!” She was paging through the section of the book which had lots of illustrations. “Wait!” she gasped, as she turned the page. “Bondage? Whoa! He has her tied to the bed!” “That might be fun,” I grinned. “And then I can tie YOU to the bed?” she asked with a silly smirk. “I suppose turn-about is fair play.” “And threesomes?” “That might not...

January 23, 1996, Chicago, Illinois “Father, bless!” I said, greeting Father Basil with upturned palms. “Bless you, Stephen,” he said as I kissed his hand. The waiter showed us to a quiet table along the wall of Roditys in Greektown. He took our drink orders and was back quickly. We placed our food orders right away and he left to put them in with the kitchen. “I’m not quite sure how to address this, so I’m just going to ask you bluntly. March 1980, Hovås/Göteborg, Sweden I woke early as usual, but just enjoyed being in bed with Katt. When she woke, she hopped out of bed and pulled a robe out of her closet and handed it to me. “There’s a spare toothbrush in the bathroom. Go have your shower, then we’ll have breakfast after I have my shower.” I quickly showered and brushed my teeth, and went back to Katt’s room. She went to shower and came back a few minutes later. She dressed, and I got a very good look at her sexy body...

October 29, 2000, Chicago, Illinois Birgit followed me as far as the stairs, then scooted upstairs when I went to the front door and opened it. “Hi!” Sophie said. “Hi!” I replied and held the door open so she could come into the house. I closed the door behind her then led her to my study where I waited until she went in, and then walked in, closing the door behind me. August, 1983, Chicago, Illinois I walked in the near 90°F heat to Carla’s place. I was grateful that the humidity of the morning had dropped significantly; otherwise the heat would have been unbearable. By the time I walked up the steps to the apartment over the photography studio and knocked on her door, I had broken into a light sweat. Carla answered almost immediately and invited me inside her studio apartment. The air was moderately cool, and the window air conditioner was running full...

February 16, 1997, Chicago, Illinois Our conversation during the Rap Session was about how to find ‘truth’ and both Elizabeth and I made a strong case for skepticism as the best approach to life. “But if you don’t believe anything is true, how can you decide what to do?” Brenna asked after a lengthy discussion about how to know what was true. “Remember what we said about listening carefully?” Elizabeth asked. “We operate as if the things we’ve come to believe actually are true, but always...

March 13, 1994, Chicago, Illinois “Hi, Steve!” Ailea said when she opened the door. “Hi,” I replied, accepting the offered hug. There was no touching of lips, just of cheeks, and I wondered if I’d misread her intentions at her birthday lunch, or if, perhaps, she detected my reluctance to return the offered affection. “Lunch is ready, so go ahead and sit. I’ll bring it in from the kitchen.” I went to the low table, sat down, and a minute later, Ailea brought miso soup and sushi, our usual...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 10 BridgetChapter 72 An Explosive Discovery

April 3, 1997, Dallas, Texas “Remember what I said about drinking too much,” I said, as I poured bourbon into three cups. We’d stopped at a liquor store, bought a bottle of Blanton’s, and then returned to the small suite I’d reserved at the Westin. Deborah’s room was down the hall, and Krissy’s was two floors below. Krissy’s comment had caught me a bit off guard, but I hadn’t reacted visibly. I didn’t know her quite well enough to know if she’d been teasing with Deborah, so I was being...

September 1, 1987, Chicago, Illinois “I heard that you have some kind of plan to help Ed,” I said to Connie. “There’s no plan,” she replied. “A witness who saw the shopkeeper alive after Ed left came forward.” That sounded convenient, and I wondered if the witness was real or someone that Anthony had put forward to solve the problem. July 1979 — Falkenberg, Sweden On Friday, when I got back from my run, Pam was in her bra and panties again. I whistled at her, she giggled, then finished dressing. I showered, and we went to breakfast and finished up our last day. Once class was done, we were pretty much free. October 7, 2000, Chicago, Illinois “Are you sure that’s a good idea?” I asked. “What if they come home?” Actually, I wasn’t sure it was a good idea even IF they didn’t come home. I’d reluctantly agreed to the threesome because Cynthia had really wanted to do it.
