"Stop squirming!" The skinny mage directed towards the tall Barbarian, who was indeed attempting to avoid Helldemon's soot stained finger. "It looks perfectly natural, I tell you."

PteriDae glanced across the table at me. Her expression told me that she, at least, didn't find Kimpo's ash-darkened brows at all convincing.

"Maybe if Blaster or Chasm or another capable healer were here..." I started, drawing a lowering of the artificial brows in my direction.

"Even they can't regrow hair, Dear," my wife offered helpfully. Kimpo's dark glance fell in her direction, but it takes more than an angry Primogen to shake my wife. "Besides, it was his own fault. His eyebrows had barely started to grow back from the last time!"

A low mumble came from Kimpo, but no one attempted to interpret for him.

"Perfect!" Helldemon stepped away from Kimpo and absent-mindedly wiped his sooty hands on curry-stained robes. "Show everyone my handiwork!"

Kimpo turned towards where Pteri and I were sitting. Over each eye was a perfect semi-circle in black ash. The effect was... unusual.

Somewhere deep inside my chest I felt a giggle trying to escape. Pteri ground the heel of her boot into my instep and the giggle subsided.

We HAD to be meeting in the Phoenix Arena. That kick hurt!

Helldemon wandered off to his own business somewhere else and Pteri quickly fixed Kimpo's eyebrows to something less... exotic.

"Your wife is definitely going to have to start fixing you larger lunches," she lectured, although he didn't seem to be listening. "Or you could try growing fire-resistant eyebrows."

"Now, Pteri," I chided. "We are here to honor Greyshadow's completion of the Trials of Admission. Let's try to focus on that, and get off the subject of Kimpo's pilfering lunches and losing his eyebrows."

"Greyshadow!" Kimpo bellowed, jumping to his feet. "All these people whispering messages to me at once! It must be her!"

I opened myself to the whispers of the Clan.

"At least six of them!"

"I heard there was a dozen!"

"You sure it was HIM?"

"Him who?" I whispered ungrammatically. "Fill me in right now!"

In the next few minutes, Kimpo, Pteri, and I unraveled a story about a girl, presumably Greyshadow, dragged south out of Buya, by an uncertain number of darkly clothed fellows, led by one tall Mage with a regal bearing.

"Kija, has to be," I said aloud. I stood up and walked to the entrance of the Arena. "We only have one advantage. He doesn't know she's practically a Clan member, and so all kin will be watching for her. His head start will quickly evaporate if we can guess where he is taking her."

"Out the south gate?" Kimpo asked, rhetorically. "He must be heading home for Nagnang."

"Think we can beat him to the Pass again, this time from the other side?" Pteri asked, following me into the Hall.

"We can try," I hurried to collect a few things from Ashes, the Hall merchant, then turned back to my wife. "At least this time I won't be facing the Nagnang unarmed."

I thanked Ashes, attached the sheathed sward she handed me to my belt, and then drew it.

A Do is blue steel long sword with the singular distinction of being both the most desirable weapon to wield and the least desirable to face. Even without soul-wrenching spells like Forsake and Corrupt, it can tear through armor, like Kimpo tears through one of my unprotected lunches. With this in my hand, I felt comfortable with the thought of facing the Prince of Nagnang.

Luck was, for once, on our side. A Phoenix kin was attending a poetry reading near the south gate of Kugnae and he quickly Summoned us to him. Kimpo, Pteri, and I gathered some horses and rode towards the entrance to the Nagnang Kingdom.

The lush green grass and towering trees of Southern Kugnae gave way suddenly to the bare red sandstone of the Nagnang pass. Not much had changed since the last time we had been here, but then we were facing several Nagnang Ninja. Although our party was mostly an unarmed political envoy, we had a strong poet and two very strong mages. Pyran mostly sat and watched as Kimpo, his son Bane, and I had stood together, stronger than the walls of the Pass. Luckily for them, the Ninjas had decided against attacking into Kugnaean lands.

"Uh oh," Kimpo muttered, reigning his horse near the border markers. Pteri and I stopped next to him and dismounted, no longer quite so confident in our rescue attempt.

For there ahead of us in the Pass waited Prince Kija with his entourage, consisting of a full contingent of Royal Guard, warriors all of EeSan or greater, outfitted with the most expensive and effective weaponry. Behind them, a very serious looking group of sun-robed mages, and a squad of white-bearded Poets, each of which matched or exceeded the abilities of the strongest I had ever seen.

Indeed, our attack was hopeless. What's more, they seemed to have been waiting for us.

"Well met, again, Gareth!" Kija called from just across the border. The Prince was a gaily-bedecked clotheshorse caparisoned in brightly colored robes, edged with gold cloth. He looked as brilliant as a peacock, and was likely as vain. In our last meeting, we had bested him as much due to his overwhelming arrogance as our clever planning. "You can see I won't underestimate you again."

"I guess I should be flattered." I noticed there did seem to be one odd thing about the group arrayed against us.

"No Rogues," Kimpo supplied, he must have been thinking the same thing.

Kija laughed, causing me to wonder again what seriously deranged people always find so funny? They seem to laugh hardest just before giving the command to "open fire" or while plummeting over a cliff to their death. Alas, no cliff was available at the moment.

"Rogues? I think not," the Prince strutted back and forth, just an arm's length across the Nagnang border. He might as well have been vacationing at the seashore, for he couldn't be more out of reach. "It will be awhile before I begin to trust my Nagnang Rogues again. What few of them I let live. Sadly, all the Ninjas sent after you have suffered 'accidents'. Some even had family-wide tragedies."

"You monster!" Pteri exclaimed.

"I can have the whole Phoenix Clan here in minutes, Kija," Kimpo stepped up to the Border, in his black armor he looked like a bear looming over the slight Mage. "Then we will see how much protection you get from your troops."

Kija laughed again.

"These paltry troops aren't my protection, Barbarian," he explained, still chuckling. He quickly stepped behind the wall of warriors arranged along the border, then returned leading a young lady, gagged with her hands tied behind her.

"Greyshadow!" Kimpo exclaimed.

"She is Phoenix and under my protection, Kija," Kimpo threatened. "Harm her and I will wear your skull for a hat."

The Prince snickered derisively.

"But she ISN'T really yours, yet," he smiled evilly. "She is still Nagnang and hasn't formally sworn allegiance to you, has she?"

Kimpo glanced at me, perhaps hoping I had some ideas. It was true, until Greyshadow was formally Buyan and Phoenix, we didn't have a legal right to ask for her return. All that was to be taken care of during this afternoon's ceremony. While Kija held her hostage, even the might of the entire Clan would be insufficient to ensure her safe return.

"All right, Kija," I began, as calmly and evenly as I could. "You win."

Greyshadow took that moment to start struggling with all her bonds, but Kija simply kicked her feet out from under her. She fell hard, but the callous Prince never even spared her a glance to see the stream of blood running down her cheek.

"Gareth, you never disappoint me." Kija pulled out a leather diplomatic pouch and untied the straps. "You knew this was just a show, didn't you?"

"Even someone as vain as you, wouldn't arrange all this merely to gloat," I nodded. "What is it that you really want?"

Kija smiled, just barely showing his teeth. He looked like a cat that swallowed a whole flock of canaries, and had decided that the family dog looked tasty, too.

"What does he mean, Gareth?" Kimpo looked confused. There seemed to be little likelihood of a fight, now and he seemed uncomfortable holding his Spike without using it to bash in some skulls.

"Please, tell me YOU are the real power behind the Phoenix Clan, Gareth," Kija sneered at the confused Primogen. "I find it offensive to think this BARBARIAN is running the most powerful clan in Buya."

Shadow on the EdgeChapter 7

Roebuck is part of the Taurian Concordat and the Concordat was tired of all the Pirate attacks. They wanted us with them for an attack on Tortuga Prime which was the major Pirate base in this sector. Eager Beaver was willing to release us to them for this attack. They, the Concordat and the Mining Company, had discussed it and it ended up that our contract was sold to the Concordat. The Concordat gave us two choices, we could go in with everyone else with no intelligence on the planet, no...

Shadow on the EdgeChapter 5

Dirk and I were split up. We each went into a Scout Lance for the two new Lances of Shadow. The first thing we did was to start to familiarize the others with the area. That didn't take long and as we were doing that we were beginning to become acquainted with each other. Mack Flannery was the Captain of Shadow. He rode around in a Catapult which is a 65 ton missile launcher. Its main weapons are two LRM-15s which can turn out a lot of missiles. Lt. Randy Larson was the Executive Officer...

Shadow on the EdgeChapter 9 Providence

When you speak of 'Games' most people don't think of the quarterly games put on by each of the five members of the Inner Sphere, they think of Solaris VII, also known as the Game World. It's here the top Mech Warriors migrate, having made their way up the ladder from the less well known arenas, from the minor leagues so to speak. We here on the Periphery like the games also. As Solaris VII is too far to travel (and as many of us here on the Periphery can't or won't return to the Inner...

Shadow ManVersion 2

Cold. She was chilled to the bone, unable to move. Even the talons of the creatures that mauled her were made of ice. They gouged deep furrows in her flesh that seeped drops of crimson. Tala fought in the chilling darkness, desperately trying to escape the grasping tentacles that held her prisoner. They were everywhere, imprisoning her body, confining her in the nightmare world of black dreams. They held her fast, unrelenting as they pried her legs and arms apart, preparing her for... him....

Shadow on the EdgeChapter 26

We didn't take leave two and a half weeks later. I had only been back ten days and there were things I needed to catch up on. Shadow Brigade was now three full Regiments. In fact we were a bit larger than that with a Training Battalion and the Battalion I had 'purchased'. These were not to be hired out. One stayed here while the other one guarded HellHole. We had decided that three Regiments was as large as we wanted to grow. We might grow larger in the size of our BattleMechs but the...

Shadow on the EdgeChapter 13

With the expansion of Shadow one of the first things that was needed was some reorganization. Each of the three Company commanders were given another Company and a Command Lance and promoted to Major. I tapped Bruce MacAmon and Jero Conn as my two Company Commanders. As the replacements came in to enlarge to this size we started to train them in the Shadow way of fighting. We depend on each other much more than any other group I have seen. We start from the first developing team work and...

Shadow on the EdgeChapter 29

Three weeks passed by in a wink. I did the swimming that Doc ordered and we went on long walks. When we came back from them we went on long rides. We laughed and talked and played. I was relaxed and freer than I could remember. Drake and Taylor were both picked up. Surprisingly Drake was the hardest to find. He had secured a job as a grunt at the Mech bay and blended in so well he was overlooked twice. Taylor tried to be an old man once too often. I had sent a written message back to the...

They didn't return. For the last three days we have been resting and repairing Mechs. After the main Mechs were repaired, second rides were assigned and repairs made. When each pilot had two rides ready to roar it was relax time for the Techs and Astechs. They had kept us going, repaired, armed and armored when we were fighting for our very existence. We had gone through more ordinance, armor and repairs during this ten days than we had done during the whole of the last year. They now...

Shadow on the EdgeChapter 12

We spent five weeks on Tortuga before the Colonel returned. He seemed pleased with himself so I guess everything went off well. That evening he called a meeting of all the officers. "Well, this is how it is. They were very pleased with our fight at Port Krin and even more so with the defeat of the Pirates here and the end of Paula Travelina. There was a bounty on her head of one megacredits." "Now the real news. I turned the treasure trove over to them with us getting a finder's fee....

"Mick, I know you're going to like this one, you're always complaining of being bored." said Colonel Ezekiel 'Zeke' Jones, when everyone was finally present for a Staff Conference he had called. Shadow Brigade is a Mercenary Regiment and I am one of the Battalion Commanders. We had just enlarged from being a Battalion and I wasn't even used to being called 'Major' yet. Shadowing And Lusting After Ms Robinson

I stood looking at her teach in the classroom as I sat at my desk. Her perky lips moved as did her nicely sized boobs as she maneuvered. My panties got wet again as deep breaths were taken in. Admiration had a lot to do with my attraction and getting over my crush wasn't an option. A few years before, I sat in one those student chairs in her math class. Even as I hated the subject, I always arrived in the classroom as an anxious woman. Two years after I graduated from high school, I came back...

Shadowing Stan © 2005 Deanna Lea I walk in your night time shadows; steps behind you. In the past my shadow was a dream floating secretly in your mind. Yes, I do know your secrets. I hear your heavy breathing as I come closer, tonight you walk quickly, wanting to run, but tonight our shadows become one. SHADOW CHLOE

"Shadow?" I blinked my eyes bringing myself back from the enchantment spell that her eyes as well as her hold body has the power to put me under, 'Hmm?' Her eyes flickered with a slight worry as she laid there watching me. "Baby are you okay?" I nodded then smiled at her, reassuring her that everything was okay. Chloe looked so beautiful laying there before me. It was like seeing her for the first time all over again. We had been dating for a few months now but every time that I saw her...

The last thing any of the group saw before the explosion was Alex getting inside; they never saw him come out. I left feeling better. I took one of the shuttles and went home. After four days there I started to get bored. Dad's work was great for him but I was not ready for all the headaches of running a farm, overseeing a sawmill or two mining operations. I still enjoyed the headaches I got from running a Battalion. I did look into the trading a bit more. I had feelers out through them looking for something. So far it hadn't shown up but it would. I also viewed the latest letters from Sean. Like...

Zeke wasn't too happy about what we'd done. You've heard about being chewed a new one? Well he didn't do that, he just chewed around the old one and it fell out! He didn't like me risking the others (they volunteered), he didn't like me risking the ships (they were my ships) and he didn't like me risking the Mechs (the Mechs had been left behind with the Regiment). Shadow on the EdgeChapter 23 Jade

We were on a simple movement from one location to another. There wasn't supposed to be any hostiles around for many klicks. The sun was shining and we were skirting a set of woods. It was a day made for poetry. Something about birds, sunshine and that stuff when charging out of the woods came tanks like I've never seen before. They didn't register on my MAGs and the IR reading was very weak. They turned their guns on us and opened fire. I would have thought that we were still out of range...

Chapter 09 Leah took my hands in hers and smiled. "Everyone's gone home, Shannon. It's just you and me now." "Yeah, you and me... and the three Doms waiting for me in the games room," I said nervously. We were sitting in my kitchen, clothed again of course, and sipping our 'one last margueritas'. I wasn't sure if I really wanted to check what I looked like. I just knew it would only make me feel worse. My hands froze and I looked up into my face. Shadow EscapeChapter 2

The walk back to the Clan Hall seemed oddly quiet after the loud question and answer session with the children. Although they had been quite disappointed to learn there never had been a real "Phoebe", I thought we discussed enough actual history to show that many more exciting things existed than one mythical bird. I directed the kids to the library and to the Guild masters with the rest of their questions. The Phoenix Garden was much as I had left it, with the possible glaring exception...

A week later we showed up at the drop point to Providence. There was a Leopard Dropship with four Mechs and two aerospace fighters waiting for us. They exchanged places with the No-Name Leopard and gave the Colonel the message. He didn't even unload. We just extended the sails and started a quick recharge. Two days later we were on Tortuga Prime. All three of the Dropships dropped. We had every Mech that we could man aboard and went in ready to repel an invasion. Captain Jacobs is a Very...

It was a fact that all good parties started and ended in the kitchen. At forty-one years old, he had been lucky to get the job as a senior scientific researcher at a...

Shadow Dancing Ch 01

Chapter 1 – There Shadows Meet It seems like only yesterday that fear and old taboos used to rule most of my 40 some odd years of life, then like shadows dancing in that unreal time between dusk and dawn they disappeared, as all shadows must when the sun’s rays slowly kiss dawns golden lips. No I’m not crazy at least I hope I’m not, nor am I perverted, kinky or sick as some others my age might think. I am in fact in love truly and deeply for the first time in my life, regardless of the fact...

Shadows on the Street

If anyone had seen Michael Gillian sitting in his parked car in a shadowy corner of a dark street two blocks from his ex-girlfriend's apartment, they would immediately think that something sinister was about to happen. The Hallway, Moonvale School, Following David’s flunkies dragged Liz to the floor and held her arms, twisting them back enough to cause pain. She was kicking and flailing her legs around to keep from allowing David to approach but he wasn’t deterred. He quickly grabbed her feet and lowered himself to his knees while holding her legs out to his sides. “Feisty,” David said with a smile. He was already hard, smelling her scent always aroused him and he wanted her, he was bred to want her. He...

Shadow and LightChapter 22

Pride Room, Moonvale School, Immediately Following Liz, Maria, Alex and Kyle stood in front of the elevator doors and stared at their mates, as they stood next to their naked doubles. Liz’s eyes darted back and forth between Max and the young man who looked very close to him. Their faces were virtually identical, their height, bodies, everything was the same. The only difference was that the stranger looked a lot harder, rougher, all the new ones did. “Liz,” Max said. “This is Zan.” “Zan?”...

Shadow and LightChapter 23

Principal’s Office, Moonvale School, 18:30 “There has to be something you can do?” Maria asked. “You must have some idea where our parents are?” “I wish I did Ms Deluca. There is a Hunter pack in Roswell now, looking over everything, and there are two more packs on their way. There are simply no better trackers on Earth,” the principal said. “Is there anything that they’ve reported?” Max asked. “Nothing much. From what I’ve been told there was a trace of a strange odour, possibly a scent...

Shadows of Life Ch 01

(This is the first story I’ve ever published for others to see. I realize the sentence structure is incorrect and probably has some grammatical errors. Please comment and rate this first installment of ‘Shadows of Life’. Depending on the response will determine if I post the next chapters.) * She looked over her shoulder for the third time in as many minutes that night. She was acutely aware of being tailed. But by who or what, she didn’t know. Hoping it wasn’t the rest of the clan she had...

Moonshadow Ninja SpyPart 3

"Moon?" She asked loudly. "Over here" He could sense her relaxing again. I thought he left, thought Snowhalk. "We still have half a days walk since we got sidetracked yesterday." Moon said. He painted a map for Snowhalk to memorize. As she was memorizing the map he carefully wrapped up his bedroll in which the sword that was concealed in there fell out. Snowhalk picked it up and then lunged it at him. Thinking this was betrayal he moved into combat stance, but the ftt of a shuriken...

Moonshadow Ninja Spy1

"Intruder!" Moon hung his head and cursed. How could his cover have been blown so quickly? As Moon looked around the room, he noticed there was a table with a single candle burning, right next to it was a door. He couldn't sense any guards so he quickly got out a beaker, and poured water into the bottom of the door. When he opened it, it gave a mere whisper. His idea had worked. He looked down both hallways and recalled his map that he had memorized and went to the right. Once he reached...

Shadowgirl

Shadowgirl I think I have put more time into outlining this story ahead of time than any other story. I know that I have some stuff hanging, but this story came to me very quickly and then fleshed itself out in my head long before I started to put it on paper. It is derivative of a number of sources, especially the various versions of the Batman, but I hope I have done some honor to him and Bob Kane, the genius who created him. As I write this, I don't even know if it will be...
