Yvonne was sentenced to thirty years. It was hard time and not any type of resort prison that people with money could apply to. She stood there in complete shock. She would have to serve twenty-one years before being eligible for a parole hearing. Being in her early fifties, this was tantamount to a life sentence. For the first time, she realized that she might die in prison. Being a felon, what she owned was forfeited to her family which the chief beneficiary being Victoria. She fought trying to keep from being handcuffed as she was dragged out of the courtroom.
"Happy now, you fucking bitch?" she shouted at Victoria. "I wouldn't be in this mess if it weren't for you."
Yvonne watched Victoria stand up and shrug her shoulders as if she didn't care. For the first time, Yvonne wished she had a handgun to shoot her. The last glimpse she had of her daughter was her back as she leaned over to gather her purse.
Victoria and Josh had lunch at the Ritz. He wore his new dark blue suit, pale blue shirt, multicolor tie with all shades of blue and his black wingtips. She wore a pewter gray satin blouse and tight black tube skirt four inches above the knees, black silk stockings and three inch black heels. Her shape was like that when he met her on that first day of work at Bellform.
"She's out of my life now," Victoria said, sipping her white wine with a chefs salad. "I guess I'll never see her again?"
"I wonder how jail food tastes?" Josh wondered.
"It can't be any worse than the shit I ate at that institution," she bit into her salad with a dinner roll. "That stuff was puke and choke."
"What if she wants you to visit her?" Josh cut into a small filet.
"I don't know what I would do if she asked that."
"I think you should go," Josh advised. "If she wants you there just to vent and call you names, you can always get up and leave. But if she really has any remorse, you should do what she wishes. Forgive her or not. I won't give you any advice on that."
"No more what ifs," she responded. "Irv says we can move into Lake Forest at any time. Brie's buying the house as you know so it will stay in the family. Your mother is moving in with Bill so I say lets pack and go. I think Tiffany will love playing on the grounds."
"I advise having a fence built on the lake front so she won't be tempted to jump in. You know how curious toddlers are."
"That's the first thing we'll do. What do you say? Move in at the end of the month?"
"As soon as we can."
"I'm not changing a thing inside. I have to admit my mother really knew how to decorate. With all the hardwood, gorgeous furniture and thick plush carpeting, it is quite lovely. I've got to give credit where credit is due."
"As lovely as you?" Josh grinned.
"Why do I feel that you're buttering me up to get into my panties?"
"Because that is exactly what I'm trying to do."
"Flattery will get you everywhere," she bit into a strip of ham.
Even though it was hot and humid the Howards moved to Lake Forest in early August. They didn't bring anything heavy with them since the house was already furnished. The night before the move they met the staff of servants wondering if they still had jobs. The cook, groundskeeper, two cleanup girls and Mary, the maid. They all stood in line nervously as Victoria introduced Josh and herself to each individual.
"Your name is?" Victoria asked the cook.
"Gretchen," the stout woman answered with a German accent.
"How long have you works for the Mikleskis?"
"Seven years!"
"Just about the time I moved out," Victoria remarked. "We aren't fancy around here. I'm mostly a salad eater, my husband likes his meat dishes and of course our baby is just starting to eat regular food. Do you think you can do that?"
"Ja!" Gretchen answered with a smile.
One by one Victoria talked to each person. Josh just asked a few questions just to show he wasn't Victoria's lapdog. He held the baby and bounced her up and down when she raised a fuss. Tiffany wanted to get down and explore the new place but her parents didn't wish for her to that.
"You are all welcome to stay, if you so choose," Victoria said one hour after conducting her interview. "If you don't wish to stay let us know and hopefully give us two weeks notice so we can find someone else. However I'd love for all of you to stay."
All seemed happy to stay on. One whispered to the rest that Victoria seemed nicer and less demanding than their predecessor. Each thought she'd be easier to work for.
Victoria didn't stop until everything was put away. Josh hauled all her beautiful clothes, shoes, boots, lingerie, panties, and fur coats up to their room. When they done, he went to the car to get his. It took them hours to take care of everything. Gretchen made the some BLT sandwiches with milk for Victoria and Tiffany plus a beer for Josh. He watched his wife carefully feed Tiffany little bits of adult food. She seemed to like it much better than the baby food in the jars.
They put Tiffany in the bassinet in their room and after she fell asleep, both went straight to the shower.
"This is our dream home," Josh said, thinking off all the rich and expensive furniture that decorated each room. Then showered as they were impressed with all gold plated fixtures including the sinks and toilet.
"It'll do," Victoria stated.
"I wonder how the little people are living?" he joked watching her put some rich shampoo in her already wet hair.
"They're doing just fine, at least most of them. You wash my head and I'll wash yours, deal?"
"Deal!"
"It'll be about a year by the time the court is either going to take our case or not. We've won every step so far, but it's the big one that has me concerned," Victoria leaned her head back to give him more access.
"If they refuse to hear it, it reverts to the last ruling and Bellform will be ours."
"Are you prepared to lead the largest corporation in the world?"
"I hope so," he said, running his fingers through her rich hair and massaging her scalp. "The work I had was easy but I know the next step won't."
"You'll have to deal with all kinds of people," Victoria replied, loving her scalp being kneaded. "All races, personalities, talents, hard workers, lazy workers, ones who feel they deserve more than they are making. And that's only the personnel. We have to please the stockholders, the banks loaning us money, the unions, and all that kind of crap. The one thing that is most important is the bottom line. Whether we make a profit or suffer a loss."
