27 August, 1686 Morning

It was early morning and the Maidens Revenge was six days out of Portobello just off the coast of western Cuba with Claire at the helm when two ships appeared sailing out of the Cabo San Antonio harbor. The first ship was some 3000 yards from the second, and it wasn't clear to Claire if the ships were sailing together or had coincidentally departed at the same time.

Regardless, Claire signaled for Carmen by stamping her foot on the deck which also was the roof of the Captain's cabin.

After viewing the two ships through a spyglass Carmen called all hands to deck, then started issuing orders, "Jack, take the wheel! Aba, assume the worst, you Constance, Claire, Isabel and Teresa man the cannons! Cog, you and Ihon man the sails! If you need any help let me, Felipe or Diego know! For now we'll drop the longboats and then start watering down the decks. Come on gentlemen," she spoke to the two brothers, "the cruse is over, it's time to earn your passage."

"Cog, give me that bowsprint! These two are fast!" Jack yelled out from the helm.

"Isabel, you and Teresa load the swivels with grape. Constance, Claire! Load the cannons with chain, but don't run them out until we know what their intentions are!" Aba yelled knowing that this loadout would leave all of his options open depending upon the actions of the oncoming ships.

As Felipe and Diego helped Carmen drop the longboats and then water down the decks Felipe was amazed at how efficient the crew of the Maidens Revenge was. In less than ten minuets all guns were loaded and two of the women immediately moved and quickly ran secondary sail rigging lines, while the other two women wet down sail cloth and then covered all munitions with it. Not a step, not a head turn was wasted by anyone. Other than for him and Diego everyone, including Isabel seemed to be battle hardened veteran sailors. Where had his sister learned such skills? And even Teresa, how could she have learned so quickly? And the Captain, what a woman she was. She was fully in charge, of that there was little doubt, directing and issuing orders as effectively and easily as she was beautiful.

The ships came on. Carmen looked through the glass once again, "They're flying the Jolly Roger!" She shouted, "Run out the guns ladies! Cog, battle sails!"

With the efficiently of a veteran crew Aba and the women ran out all cannons both port and starboard, then Constance and Aba each took a spot behind a swivel while Claire and Isabel manned a starboard side cannon.

Carmen got the Maidens Revenge's Jolly Roger raised just as the first ship was nearing their cannon range, its course would take it 20 degrees off to the Maidens Revenge's left. The second ship was on a roughly perpendicular course. The ships were a Sloop, and a Ketch, so Aba knew that although they were fast they at least wouldn't have any large guns on board.

Eventually, the Sloop came to within 1500 yards, and showed no signs of slowing. A few long moments passed, and then the crew of the Maidens Revenge heard the unmistakable sounds of cannons firing, but only from the farther away Ketch not the Sloop.

"Six pounders by the sound of them!" Aba yelled out, "We have the advantage of gun range! Fire the chain and take out their sails! Let's clear their decks with some grape Constance!" And all four of their guns fired almost simultaneously.

All four gunners instantly moved to another loaded gun and fired again while Teresa, Carmen and Ihon began loading and then running out the guns that had just been fired.

"They're not running broadside! They're trying to run in as fast as they can so they can get close enough to fire on our stern! That's why the Sloop hasn't been firing her cannons! They want to take this ship not sink her!" Scarlet yelled out and began maneuvering to keep them off the stern.

"Constance! Stern swivels! Claire! Isabel! Aim for the Sloop's masts if possible!" Aba yelled as he and Constance quickly ran to the rear guns.

Scarlet focused his attention on the Sloop, as it was closest to crossing the T at their stern. He attempted to turn with it and managed to keep pace with the smaller vessel. The seamanship of Cog was proven to be outstanding, as he denied the smaller vessel the stern T. However, in the end, out of frustration perhaps, the Sloop sent a volley toward their stern, but not having made the T all their shots went wide.

Then the Maidens Revenge returned fire from eight cannons, first four, and than two seconds later a second four and 100 pounds of shot and chain flew through the air at close range, smashing a part of the Sloop's mast away as if by magic, and riddled the ship with holes. But the worst of it was the deck, where once there was a crew of able-bodied seamen, there was now left only the sounds of the dying.

Scarlet yelled out to Cog as he spun the big wheel, "Hard to starboard Cog! Tighten the blocks!" He's intent was to pull away from the crippled Sloop as quickly as possible before anyone left on board could fire any of their guns. As they pulled away they could see the Sloops name plate, it read: "Satan's Strumpet."

Scarlet did his job and the Maidens Revenge left the Sloop yards behind dead in the water.

Carmen noticed that the Ketch was trying to come along for a broadside, "The Ketch didn't like what we did to the Sloop! She's coming broadside trying to sink us! Let's give her everything we've got!"

The Ketch fired a few barrages of canister at the Maidens Revenge, but they were not close enough yet to cause much damage other than Scarlet having taken a piece of metal in his left arm. Pain, sharp and jagged, lanced from his shoulder down his arm. He sucked in a pained breath, cursed using his uninjured arm on the wheel while he rode out the pain. The sleeve of Scarlet's shirt turned crimson from the wound but he ignored it and the pain trying to maintain the distance between them and the Ketch, knowing at their current distance their larger cannons and swivels could hit the Ketch but its smaller guns would be almost useless against them.

"Load the starboard swivels with chain!" Aba yelled, "Aim for their sails! Let's turn her into a rock!"

One and half minuets later the swivels were loaded with chain.

Two swivels fired.

One missed.

One hit, doing no damage.

One and half minuets later the swivels were reloaded and then fired again.

One missed.

One hit, doing very little damage, but did manage to scramble the Ketch's crew.

By now, the Ketch was closer and knowing that the port batteries had been reloaded Scarlet yelled out, "Coming hard about! Grab on to something and hang on!" as he took advantage of the wind and came over hard, quickly exposing their port batteries to the Ketch. Aba and the three women rushed over to the port cannons and fired as one. A thundering roar and the Ketch was hurt, and apparently had had enough because it turned sharply starboard trying to get out of range of the Maidens Revenge's guns.

A cheer went up from the crew of the Maidens Revenge knowing that the battle was well in hand. The name plate on the Ketch read: "Black Howl."

Thinking the engagement over, Carmen began assessing damage. Just then, Scarlet shouted out from the helm, "Boarders! Starboard!" then he fired his pistol at a man scrambling up a hooked boarding net and attempting to climb over the starboard rail. His shot missed high and the man made the top of the rail. Isabel who was standing closest to the man drew her pistol and fired. Her shot hit him directly in the middle of his chest. The man fell back.

A second boarding net hooked it self over the rail and three heads popped up. Carmen, Constance and Claire all fired their pistols. Two men fell back, the third gained the ship's deck.

Constance drew her sword and rushed toward him. Their blades clashed. The man attacked furiously and he found the point of his blade neatly parried. Then Constance gave a little ground while stepping first to her left and then to her right seeking an advantage. Discovering his weakness she advanced, parried his thrust to the right while spinning her body left and drove her sword deep into his chest.

By then five more pirates had gained the deck. Claire, Isabel and Carmen engaged three of them with their swords, Aba took on the forth pirate in hand-to-hand combat, and Cog fired his pistol killing the fifth. Claire made sure she not only kept her man at bay but also occasionally offered her blade to Isabel's man as well. The women's blades match the pirates strike for strike, their feet moving in perfect harmony with their weapons as they each blocked and parried their three opponents best efforts to defeat them...

Seconds later several more pirates made their way on board and all hell broke loose. Constance engaged one with her sword. Scarlet jumped down onto the main deck drawing his sword and joined Constance's side taking on another pirate with his blade. Constance acknowledged Scarlet's presence with a nod as the four fighters traded swings, swipes, thrusts, blocks and parries in a grisly ballet, steel clanging on steel in a counterpart of the storm raging around them. Teresa and Ihon both fired pistols taking down two men. Cog, who had climbed up the main mast and was now hanging from a rope, swung down and outward knocking two pirates off the ships rail sending them over the side, then dropping gracefully to his feet he pirouetted around and slammed his foot sideways to the head of yet another pirate, stunning him and also sending him over the side.

The Angry Whore Book 1Chapter 9 Tortuga

19 July, 1686 Early Evening The following week was uncommonly light, pleasant, and clear, with a good, wholesale, flowing breeze and the Angry Whore sailed onward in regular order with Carmen occasionally waving to one or another of the women when she wanted a sail trimmed, and that woman would run to the ropes and pull them through the blocks to adjust the angle of a yard. Everything worked smoothly and the Angry Whore proved herself to be a tight ship. The women cleaned the entire ship...

The Angry Whore Book 1Chapter 8 The Plan

12 July, 1686 Early Morning "So Isabel, are you absolutely certain you are agreeable with this?" Carmen asked the young Spanish girl. "After everything others have already done to me, and what waits for me back there, by the powers, yes... I'm fine with it," Isabel answered honestly. It was early morning two hours before sunrise the bay was still mired in fog but high above was a clear black sky sprinkled with stars. A waxing moon shined down, giving both the anchored ships and the...

The Angry Whore Book 1Chapter 10 Scarlets story

28 July, 1686 Evening As the women allowed themselves to be lead away Constance whispered to Carmen, "He does cut quite the handsome figure, does he not?" "Looks can be deceiving," Carmen whispered back, "keep a 'weather eye open'." "Allow me to introduce myself," the young man said to the women over his shoulder, removing his hat and bowing gracefully without missing a step, "Jack Scarlet, at your service, currently unwaged, but in the past having crewed on the...

Theresa My Neighbor Whore Chapter 2

I gave Theresa's ass a good smack. "I didn't say you could look at me! Eyes straight ahead, whore!" She instantly whipped her head back straight and looked at the wall in front of her. I placed both hands on her hips as if I was about ready to fuck her and felt her shudder with excitement. Then one hand, I began slowly sliding up her spine and she held her breath waiting to see what would happen next. My hand slid up to the back of her head and I massaged her scalp for a moment."Mmmm..."Then I...

My name is Mark Wood and I work as a Personnel Manager for a large corporation here in Dallas. Sometimes it gets to be too much and I have to find a way to decompress at the end of a tough day....

Lost at Sea Book 2 DriftersChapter 24

Belita stood at the Kestrel’s helm fighting the wheel with all her strength. The wind buffeted the torn sails and whipped the snapped ropes back and forth across the deck like angry serpents. Her ship was a wreck. The timbers were black with rot and full of broken holes. The storm pitched her back and forth and tossed plumes of water over her rails. Belita shouted orders, but her voice was drowned out by thunder. On the deck, her crew seemed like they were moving through water. They shambled...

The barge Princess Caroline made a brief stop at Westminster Bridge steps, allowing Patrick and I to disembark, from where it was but a short walk along Whitehall to Horse Guards. On entering Colonel Slade’s office I was pleased to see both Krish Armityge and Zinnia Teazle present, as I had little opportunity to speak to either of them before having to rush off to Bristol. I looked forward to picking up the latest news concerning Caroline Ashford from Krish, and of my sister Rebekah from...

Dawn was breaking. The storm had passed and the eastern horizon was slowly swelling from black to purple to herald the coming of the sun. The crew of the Kestrel was finishing roping hammocks between trees. The wounded were mostly already asleep. Others were unloading the smallboats they’d used to get supplies ashore. They were all exhausted but still managing to trudge along. Lord Morant and his porters had set up tents near the waterline, a ways away from the rest of the crew. Bella had found...

Lost at Sea Book 2 DriftersChapter 23

The crescent shaped cliffside was littered with walkways and bridges, and dotted throughout with caves. Platforms made from a hodgepodge of materials were anchored into the walls, and stacked on each other haphazardly. Thick ropes and chains made an elaborate net that reminded Will of rigging designed by a madman. The largest platform hung in the center of it all, ringed with crane arms and hoist tackle. The whole web looked unstable, but figures walked throughout the tangle without a hint of...

For a moment, he thought he had it, but at the last second his feet swung out from under him and he slammed into the ground hard enough that the beach crumbled beneath him. The island of Barcola was primarily Nivalese. The inhabitants had managed to repel a mainland occupation a half-century prior by pulling the majority of their people into the mountains and fighting a brutal guerrilla war against the colonizing forces. In the narrow mountain passes, the mainlanders’ usual tactics of shielded firing lines and phalanx-style close combat were completely useless. The colonists tried to starve out the natives, but the lush tropical mountain provided everything the...

2 September, 1686 Dusk Perhaps because Cog had taken the Jollyboat and gone into town for supplies Aba, who was on dog-watch was possessed by a strange, uneasy feeling. They got out of bed and Janie tentatively approached the ladder. She looked over to Bella who shoo’d her forward encouragingly. Janie began to climb. She could faintly hear the rhythmic slapping of skin on skin and a woman’s deep, throaty moans. She climbed a little faster. As her head crested the trapdoor in the early dawn light she saw Belita Vex still wearing one of Will’s large shirts and nothing else, holding onto the brass railing, looking over her shoulder with an expression of excited...

Captain Vex’s hands knotted in the witch’s dark curls. Bella was a profoundly skilled lover. Lost at Sea book 2 Drifters chapter 1

“You should have come straight to me,” Lord Morant said with an authoritarian stare. They were standing on the deck of the fishing boat as it pulled away from the docks. Morant, Lynch and Jack had joined them without a word as they boarded the ship. Will had started to speak, but Morant had cut him off.“Why would I do that?” Will snarled back, still fuming.“Nae, Will. He’s right,” Captain Vex said. She wore her hat and coat, but her other clothes had still been wet and were packed away, so she...

Lost at Sea book 1 Where Theres a Will chapter 9

Will had his feet up on his desk and was enjoying some long awaited silence. It felt a bit strange to be alone. Only a few days ago he would have been used to it. Janie had always left in the evenings. He rarely had visitors. The lighthouse was built in an area of the town which did not have a lot of nighttime activity. All the chaos and excitement that had happened the last few days was what his life had once been like all the time. Now that he had it again it made him realized how much he’d...

The Last Bookshop The Perfect Whore Part I

They rested for now and held hands in a louche arrangement as if they always did it.  Laura enjoyed a chilled champagne and he nursed a generous brandy.  A heavy primal bass pounded out the rhythm of sex.  In this bar area, on its blood-red crescent sofas, couples mingled to enjoy the visual stimulus of two half-naked cage dancers. The dancer cavorted as Harry and Laura watched intently.  Her smoky eyeshadow and black lipstick gave her an air of menace.  Youthful and taut, her china white skin...

The Angry Whore Book 2Chapter 14 Henry Morgan

21 January, 1687 Afternoon Several of the crew went ashore and they were immediately beset by questioning buccaneers, it was from their very questions that they gathered exactly how matters stood, and they perceived that Port Royal was taking a turn at becoming a more lawful English port. Apparently a good number of upstanding citizens disliked the reputation the city had acquired, and so Henry Morgan, having obtained from the crown several new city defenses, declared that pirates no...

Sean David Kilpatrick Flynn Book 1 of Wizard A Love StoryChapter 26 Expanding Awareness

The next few months the family was involved with intense training. Udit built on the two beginning exercises with additional exercises for focus, detail and comprehension enhancement. Udit also asked them to start meditating twice daily, and then he had to teach them how to meditate. Pete shook his head and said, "Udit, I can't sit with my legs all crossed and feet over my knees like the mediators do. I just don't bend that way." "You don't have to be in those positions to meditate,"...

Delilah and the Deep Blue Sea part four

The skipper of my boat was a man of few words it seemed for he maintained a taciturn silence as we sailed away from the island. I didn’t mind the lack of communication. I huddled miserably in the stern of the fishing boat, lost in my own thoughts and hardly in a mood to talk. My tear blurred eyes were fixed upon the dwindling view of the island as we left it far astern. Soon it was nothing but a pinprick on the horizon and shortly afterwards I lost it in the afternoon haze. It felt as if...

Delilah and the Deep Blue Sea part three

One day (I suppose it must have been after I’d spent about two months on the island) I was down along the shoreline collecting driftwood. On these occasions I always kept my eye open for anything else that might be of any use and this day I had a real find. Washed up against some rocks a few yards off the beach was a large plastic garbage bin. An old discarded garbage bin might not seem anything to get excited about but it was as good as treasure from King Solomon’s mines as far as I was...

Delilah and the Deep Blue Sea Part Two

When I awoke the next morning I was alone. I rose up from my bed amidst the ruins of the villa and peered around cautiously. There was no sign of her. Carefully I tip-toed out from the ruins and conducted a quick scan of the surroundings. The little olive grove was quite deserted other than the small creatures with which I shared the island. These seemed busy at this early hour. There was a little dark grey bird singing from the scrub at the edge of the olive grove. It had a musical voice I...

Delilah and the Deep Blue Sea Part One

This story has taken me forty years to tell and I only finally relate it now in the firm conviction that nobody will believe a single word of it. In many respects that doesn’t concern me. I have other motives than those of persuading the reader of the veracity of my tale. I write it more to exorcise a ghost that has haunted me for most of my adult life and will doubtless continue to do so for the rest of my days. It is a story, the memory of which, has been my constant companion these past...

Lost at Sea book 1 Where Theres a Will chapter 4

He had hips that pounded like the waves, relentless and driving. A slow, rhythmic battering that was trying to knock her over. All she could do was hold on. He stared down at her, his eyes full of concern but his expression a mask of calm. His large hands gripped her hips and pulled her back as he drove forward over and over again. Something inside her spasmed.“Holy…  fuck,” she muttered, her hands clenching against the wall.“Are you alright?” he asked, pausing his pounding hips. It was obvious...

Lost at Sea book 2 Drifters chapter 10

“What did you do?” Caine asked. Janie hadn’t really noticed him come in. He was leaning in the doorway watching Janie blow out the candles in front of the mirror. She was disheveled and flushed after watching Bella work her oral magic on Captain Vex, and she definitely did not expect an audience for what she was thinking about doing next. She was recovering from being startled, but Caine didn’t give her time to reply. “A customer says you stiffed him?”“That isn’t true at all!” Janie said. “I did...

Lost at Sea book 2 Drifters chapter 18 part 1

The crew began rousing themselves around noon. It was just too hot to sleep comfortably any longer. The shipwrecked survivors moved slow and gingerly, trudging through their tasks with stoic determination. There was a lot to be done. The ramshackle camp was mostly just strewn hammocks and bedrolls at the edge of the lagoon. There hadn’t been time or energy for much else, so the day’s first priority was to set up a more organized campsite. Nearly half the crew, lead by Mister Reeve, were off in...

Lost at Sea book 2 Drifters chapter 18 part 2

“Get out!” Belita yelled as the door opened.“Nope,” Danica said, walking in and shutting the door behind her. “I said leave!” Belita snarled, pushing herself halfway up into an unsteady, angry crouch.“And I said no,” Danica shrugged. She walked over and sat down against the wall next to the Captain. “Part of my job is to tell you no when you need it. Right now you need it. What’s going on?”“Insubordinate… I’m going tae-” Belita couldn’t find the words.“What? Lock me up? Whip me? Hang me?”...

Lost at Sea Book 2 DriftersChapter 22

Lace lounged against a tree, enjoying the music and her drunken buzz. The wake was still going. It wasn’t the happiest reason for revelry, but after a shipwreck and being attacked by monsters it was clear the crew would take any reason they could get. Sailors were an odd lot. They tended to be fairly stoic until you put a few drinks in them. Then everything they were feeling came pouring out. They were communal too, so what one felt, they tended to all feel, even if they generally didn’t talk...
