January 3, 1997, Boca Raton, Florida

“Good afternoon, Sir!” a young man in a VERY expensive suit said, opening the door to the limo.

“You must be Greg,” I replied.

“Yes, Sir. May I get your luggage?”

“I just have my weekender and my satchel,” I replied.

“I’ll take them to the master bedroom for you. Ms. Jaworski arrived a few minutes ago. You’ll find her in the great room. Kenton will take you there.”

I nodded and followed Greg into the house where we were met by Kenton, the butler, who at 6’2” with an athletic build, looked like he could play safety or tight end for the Bears.

“Good afternoon, Sir. I’ll take you to Ms. Jaworski. Is there anything I can get for you now?”

“Sparkling water with a lime would be nice.”

“Ms. Spurgeon instructed us to get San Pellegrino for you.”

“Thanks.”

He led me to the great room where Barbara was sipping what looked like lemonade. She hopped up from the couch and we exchanged a quick hug.

“This is just over the top,” she laughed. “Must be nice to have billionaire friends!”

“She’s not there yet,” I chuckled. “But she’s on her way.”

“You came alone?”

“Company rules that Bob put in place - no C-level people can travel together except in extreme emergencies.”

“Because of what happened to Rob?”

“And nearly happened to Charlie, yes. It’s something that’s been talked about before, but both he and Deborah insisted. The Board agreed as well. And honestly, it makes sense. I did point out that an atomic bomb could take out the entire Chicago leadership team, but my dad rightly pointed out the rest of you would have far bigger worries!”

“No shit!” Barbara agreed. “Colorado Springs has to have a big one targeted on it, so unless some joker puts together a bomb in his basement, I don’t think there would be much for any of us to worry about if Chicago got nuked.”

“Building the bomb is actually easy. We learned enough in physics class to do that. Getting the fissionable material is the problem. Not to mention it wouldn’t be very efficient, but if your goal is terrorism, even what amounts to a ‘fizzle’ would have the desired effect.”

“You think?” she said, shaking her head. “At least so far your Russian friends have kept a lid on that.”

“There are rumors of loose nukes out there, but my opinion is, that if that were true, and a terrorist group had one, Tel Aviv would be gone by now.”

“Probably. Now that we have the depressing conversation out of the way, how about we enjoy Florida?”

“Agreed!”

A few minutes later, Mario and John arrived, and for the next two hours, there was a steady stream until, by 5:30pm, everyone had arrived. At 7:00pm, after everyone was settled, and we’d all had a tour, we sat down to dinner in the dining room for a wonderful meal prepared by Jean-Paul, the chef.

“I know everyone has received the revised agenda,” I said. “We’ve allowed for time for the guys to play golf in the morning, and to keep the evenings free. Because of that, breakfast is on your own. Jean-Paul put up a sign-up sheet so you can list what time you’ll eat. We’ll have lunches and dinners together, and at the request of most of you, we added optional offsite activities. There are several options each evening, including nightclubs, the projection TV with movies here, and a ‘bar cruise’. Or, you can make your own plans. Kenton or Greg can assist you.”

“What are you doing tonight?” John asked.

“Sitting on the patio drinking Pappy Van Winkle and smoking a Cuban cigar,” I grinned. “I’ll probably take a dip in the pool first.”

“You know if Jessica finds out, there will be hell to pay,” Elyse said with a grin.

“If you snitch, Ms. Clarke, you’ll find yourself in a world of hurt!”

We exchanged a look which said ‘and it would be a lot of fun, no matter what happened’, but I couldn’t say that aloud and I also knew she wouldn’t really snitch.

“Snitch?” Skye asked.

“You know his wife is a doctor, right?” Charlie asked.

“Ah, yeah, booze and smoking,” Skye replied with a nod.

“She’s not so bothered by the bourbon or wine at dinner,” I said, “but smoking is a real hot button with all the docs. I smoke maybe three or four cigars a year, and that’s four or five too many for them!”

“With all the exercise you get, your diet, and everything else, I doubt a few stogies are going to do you in!” Terry added.

“It’s all about risk assessment,” I replied. “And how you use statistics. Smoking does increase your risk of lung cancer, but the risk associated with a couple of cigars a year is LESS than simply living in a city like Chicago with pollution. But forget that! Nobody is going to tell Jess, so it never happened!”

“The ‘Jesse Stephen Block’ theory of hockey penalties!” Terry declared.

“He’s right,” I chuckled. “It’s not a penalty if the ref doesn’t see it!”

“So we only follow the rules when the regulators are watching?” Deborah asked.

“They’re ALWAYS watching!” Elyse groused. “But you know Steve’s rule on that one. And besides, what Jesse is talking about doesn’t leave evidence the way cooking the books would. And Steve insists we follow every regulation that applies to us to the letter. We could probably cut our tax bill, but he won’t even allow us to use things which are untested in the courts.”

“Why invite MORE scrutiny?” I asked. “Is saving a few thousand dollars in taxes worth the potential trouble?”

“Of course not. That’s why they leave us alone!”

“Speaking of that, are we going to talk about the eight-hundred-pound gorilla in the room?” Cindi asked.

“He’s more of a jackass than a gorilla,” Julia replied.

I shrugged, “There isn’t much to talk about at this point. I’m confident our strategy is sound, and neither I, nor Deborah, nor our outside counsel, think he has any chance of getting a preliminary injunction based on equity. If you really want to discuss it, I’m sure Deborah can entertain you later with all the details of money damages as a cure.

“So, given he can’t interfere with the execution of our plan, we simply continue executing and let the attorneys do what we pay them to do - defend us from other members of their own profession. You know, like Mafia protection money!”

“Hey!” Deborah groused.

“Tell me it’s not true! I pay you to protect me from other lawyers. That’s EXACTLY like the Mafia, only you guys wrote YOUR protection racket into the law!”

“Here we go again,” Sam said, shaking her head. “Can we save this for some time when I’m NOT here?”

“I was just about to ask Kenton for popcorn,” Alonzo chuckled, “and somebody has to spoil all the fun!”

“Back to Cindi’s point - I have this all in hand. Just execute our plan and don’t worry about what Dante does in court. Dante’s entire goal is to get us to take our eyes off the ball. Don’t. Let ME and my lawyers worry about it. You just kick his ass, Cindi.”

“Literally!” Charlie added.

We finished our meal and I did as I’d said, and took a dip in the pool. I hadn’t swum in a LONG time and it felt good to do so, though my endurance wasn’t what it had been back in High School, despite running and karate. When I got out, I dried off, and Greg brought me a glass of Pappy van Winkle and a Cuban cigar, and I sat on a chaise on the deck.

“OK with some company?” Eve asked.

“Sure. Want a drink?”

She held up her glass, “My dad would KILL for Pappy van Winkle!”

“I think Samantha might have had to!” I chuckled. “A cigar, too?”

“What? Girls can’t smoke cigars?”

“They can,” I grinned. “Pull up a chair.”

Eve sat down and we quietly sipped our bourbon and puffed our cigars.

“What made you change your mind about the evenings?”

“You mean agreeing that we didn’t need to be together?”

“Yes.”

“Because of my trip to Ohio. I was going to use this to try to hold on to what I saw slipping away, but I became convinced that nothing I could do would change what had to happen with our expansion. I won’t be able to know everyone closely in a company of two hundred people, and it’s a fool’s errand to try. In the end, the ‘Kitchen Cabinet’, and a few select others, will be who I’m close to.”

“But aren’t you close to everyone here?”

“Not everyone, and that’s part of what triggered the feelings that led to my trip to Ohio. And that’s why I’m doing what I said - giving up my veto for anyone below director level. I’m going to trust Mario, Zeke, and Barbara to manage their teams. They have full veto, if they wish to exercise it. I prefer they do, but I have to let them run their regions as they see best.”

“That’s giving up a lot of control.”

“It is, but I don’t see any other way. And, to be honest, I’m going to be tied up with the Dante bullshit for the next three months or so. Right now, I need everyone to focus fully on executing our plan with no distractions from Georgia. Dante’s entire goal is to distract us.”

“Not to win?”

“That’s a nice bonus for him, but no, the entire point of this exercise is disruption. It doesn’t really cost him much at this stage. It can be an effective tactic, but not against me because I won’t allow him to distract NIKA from her mission.”

“Which is why you simply pocketed the papers when you were served and didn’t let anyone know until much later.”

“Exactly.”

“What’s your end game?”

“A decisive victory.”

“Which is?”

I chuckled, “I would love to see Dante on his hands and knees, kissing my feet, begging me to buy out the shattered remnants of Peach Software.”

“Going for the jugular?”

“I’m done with him. And counterintuitively, that’s why I need to focus my efforts on him, and not let it distract anyone else.”

“But isn’t he distracting you?”

“That’s why I said ‘counterintuitively’. What is it I do day-to-day at NIKA that others can’t do? That’s why I hired Deborah and Bob, for example. And why you have the duties you do. I’ve been delegating for the past ten years. This is just the next step.”

“I have to say, you have nerves of steel - ‘Little Tony’, Dante, Scuderi - you’re unflappable.”

“In my dreams! There are a few things which can get me off my game, but Dante isn’t one of them, and neither are the Italians.”

“What, then?”

“I’m not going to give up that secret to anyone!” I chuckled.

“I’ll talk to Jesse or Birgit!”

“And you think either of those two will rat me out? If so, you’re on serious drugs!”

“Can anyone join this party?” Deborah asked.

“Sure,” I chuckled, “grab a cigar and a bourbon. That’s the price of admission.”

“Can I pass on the cigar?”

“What do you think, Eve?”

“Well, the Surgeon General says these things will kill you, so I suppose so. Of course, in YOUR case, it’s a specific surgeon who WILL kill you!”

“Nah, she’ll just sic Birgit on me.”

“What?” Deborah asked.

“At one party, when I was smoking, my daughter announced that it was bad for me. I get the evil eye now if she sees me smoke my pipe or a cigar. I don’t do it very often, and I make sure she doesn’t see me.”

“Birgit or your wife?”

“Who do you think?” Eve laughed. “Everyone who knows Steve well enough knows who runs his life, and it’s not either of the doctors he’s married to!”

“She only THINKS she’s in control,” I objected.

“Uh-huh,” Eve replied. “Of all the women in your life, that’s the one you actually answer to!”

Greg came out to check on us and refilled our bourbon glasses, fetching a glass for Deborah. A few minutes later we were joined by Kimmy, Elyse, and Charlie, completing the ‘Kitchen Cabinet’.

“What did people decide to do, Kimmy?” I asked.

“The guys all opted for a nightclub. Some of the girls went to the club, and some of the others are watching a movie. You won’t believe the collection of tapes!”

“Oh, I would,” I replied. “Samantha sent the entire collection from Chicago here. There was no room in her condo and she sold the Chicago house because neither she nor her mom wanted it.”

“Where’s her mom now?” Kimmy asked. “I thought she stayed here most of the time.”

“She’s in Saint Martin,” I replied. “A place I’d love to go back to.”

Elyse smirked, “You and Samantha and her six friends?”

“Samantha is married,” I replied. “AND she’s pregnant.”

“You and Samantha?” Deborah asked.

“I only gave you the list of girls in the Club,” I chuckled.

“And that was done before they started their business relationship,” Elyse quickly interjected. “He may be generous with his affection, but he’s not a complete idiot.”

“You might want to verify THAT with his sister,” Charlie teased.

“Little sisters do NOT count in that regard!” I protested. “Just ask Jesse and Matthew!”

“I do believe that was a universal sentiment,” Elyse teased. “Shared by American, Swedish, and Russian girls alike!”

“Teenage guys aren’t exactly known for their common sense,” Eve said with a grin.

“Nor older ones!” Deborah smirked.

“And that’s why you play for the other team?” Eve teased.

“There’s a LOT to be said for soft and cuddly!” Deborah replied, without missing a beat.

“There is a long line of girls who can attest to Steve’s cuddliness!” Elyse replied. “You guys have never met Katt, have you?”

“I did, remember?” Charlie asked. “She was around when Steve first started college.”

“They say the mind is the first thing to go when you get old,” I chuckled.

“So explain YOU!” Elyse retorted.

“He’s a guy!” Deborah exclaimed. “They think with a MUCH smaller part of their bodies! And I’d say our boss is the perfect example of that!”

“You’re wrong,” Kimmy said softly. “He doesn’t. That’s not what motivates him at all.”

“I agree,” Charlie said. “It’s not.”

“For a guy who gets laid as much as he does, how is that even possible?”

“Why do you think that happens?” Kimmy asked. “Not because he’s driven by his ‘boy parts’,” as I’ve heard Birgit call them.

I chuckled, “Not anymore. She’s graduated to using proper anatomical terms.”

“She’s going to be a hellion when she’s a teenager!” Eve laughed.

“Going to be?” Elyse asked.

“Deborah,” Kimmy said, “I know I’m out of line, but ask him to cuddle. I think he will, because that doesn’t violate the policy.”

“As if THAT matters!” Deborah said, shaking her head.

“We’re all adults here,” Kimmy continued. “Nobody here cares about that policy because none of us are going to say one word against Steve in ANY context. And that goes for ALL the girls in the Club. And let me tell you something in complete candor - he won’t violate marriage vows, or I’d be going to his room tonight.”

“You’d cheat on your husband?”

Kimmy smiled, “Steve is that special.”

“Steve, can I ask why that rule is so important when you pretty much thumb your nose at social convention about sex?” Deborah asked.

“It all goes back to High School, when now Deputy US Marshal Pete Carston, then just my friend Pete, bounced me off the hood of his Mustang after I threatened to screw Melanie into the next century while they were a couple. The rule evolved in stages, with some nuances here or there, but in the end, no, I won’t facilitate cheating. You know what I do isn’t cheating because I maintain fidelity to my vows to my wives.

“To be completely candid, that’s the issue with Kimmy. Gary isn’t going to agree. But it’s a bit more nuanced - it has to be real agreement, not acquiescence. I’ve had one ongoing affair with a married woman, but she and her husband have what amounts to an open marriage. When she and I met, she had me call him and we interrupted him banging their teenage au pair!”

Deborah laughed and shook her head, “Unreal!”

“Deborah, does society agree with your choice of sex partners?” Eve asked.

“The ignorant, backward, cretins don’t, obviously.”

“Do you care?”

“Not particularly.”

“Then why care about Steve’s sex life? Or mine, for that matter. True confession time here - my first time was when I was sixteen with an older, married guy who is a friend of my dad. He’s still married and we still screw every Summer when we have our family visit. I’ve had several affairs with married men.”

“But why? You’re gorgeous, smart, and totally in control!”

“Because that’s what I want. It turns me on, I guess. Their issues with their wives are their problem, not mine. Sex is, well, sex.”

“And if your husband cheats on you?”

“Not acceptable. He has to make a choice at that point.”

“A double standard?”

“I won’t cheat on him because I’ve given my word. I’d expect him to do the same.”

“But you, well, I’m not sure this is the right word, encourage them to cheat!”

“As I said, that’s between the guy and his wife. Just as it would be between my husband and me. Actions have consequences.”

“I think I’m missing something,” Deborah said. “How can you hold him to a standard you don’t hold other men to?”

“Pardon me,” Eve grinned, “but stop being a damned lawyer and demanding logical consistency when it comes to sex!”

“Steve seems to have a logical consistency to his sex life, even if the logic escapes me.”

“He’s spent the last twenty years working out that consistency,” Elyse said. “He wasn’t quite so consistent in the past. He just pointed out how his rule about married women came about. Want to know another weird one?”

“At this point?” Deborah asked, smiling wryly, “why not?”

“Except for his first, who was nine years older,” Elyse said, “he’s never been with a woman more than three years older. Jessica is at his outside limit, because two years is his norm.”

“What the heck caused that rule?” Deborah asked.

“It’s not a rule,” I replied. “It’s a preference. A strong one. And actually, as I’m older now, it’s best expressed that what I consider my ‘type’ is between sixteen and twenty-two, athletic, small breasts, and, most importantly, intelligent.”

A WellLived Life 2 Book 7 SakurakoChapter 57 Land of the Rising Sun Part III

June 23, 1994, Oguni, Yamagata Prefecture, Japan My first week in Japan flew by, and a routine developed. Sakurako would wake me; I’d exercise and run, then shower and have breakfast, and share tea with Sakurako. After breakfast, I’d meditate, and then have my training session. After lunch, I’d work in the garden, or, as I had this day, wash the floors in the house. Hiroshi would accompany me back to the cottage and we’d talk while I washed up and dressed for dinner. After dinner, I’d spend...

June 15, 1994, Chicago, Illinois “That’s everything, I think,” I said. “My luggage is in the trunk of the car, I have my passport, tickets, and money, both dollars and yen. I can’t think of anything else.” “I’ll see you in five weeks,” Elyse said, giving me a quick hug. “Did you see they rioted in Vancouver last night because they lost the Stanley Cup?” I chuckled, “Only Canadians would riot when they LOSE the Cup! I did see that on the front page of the Trib. Are we ready?” “Michelle and...

A WellLived Life Book 6 Kara IChapter 5 Housemates

August 1981, Chicago, Illinois On Sunday morning, I made my usual call to Karin. I described everything in the apartment and all the things I’d done during the week, including the reception. Both of us would start school in a week and we were both looking forward to it. When we finished talking, I went out for my run, showered, and ate breakfast. I made some tea, started a load of laundry, and then turned on the stereo. I put on an REO Speedwagon album and then relaxed on the couch with the...

August 21, 1989, Chicago, Illinois “Unbelievable,” I said when I read the headline from the Chicago Tribune. “It says here that Solidarity activist Tadeusz Mazowiecki was nominated to be Prime Minister of Poland.” I hadn’t had a chance to read the paper on Sunday because it hadn’t been delivered before we left for the race track in Michigan. “So now what?” Kara asked. “We’re in totally uncharted territory. Your guess is as good as anyone’s right about now.” “Steve, do you have a minute?”...

A WellLived Life Book 8 StephieChapter 36 My Lifes Journey

July, 1983, Chicago, Illinois I woke up early on the First of July, because my body clock was still set to Swedish time. The flight back had been long but uneventful, and I was happy that the businessman in the seat next to me hadn’t wanted to talk. I read, wrote some longhand journal entries, ate, and generally relaxed while the plane zipped over the Atlantic. I’d come home, taken a sauna, eaten a light meal, and gone straight to bed, not bothering to check messages, look at the mail that...

A WellLived Life Book 1 BirgitChapter 4 Calm Before the Storm

June 1977 When I got home, I grabbed a Coke and some chips and went right to my room. I didn’t think I could deal with my parents or Jeff or Stephanie. I just needed to be by myself. That wouldn’t seem odd to anyone, because I often went to my room to read. In addition, I now had the TV I’d received for my birthday. I flipped it on to WXIX Channel 19 and reruns of Gilligan’s Island and Green Acres played in the background while I read. I had to get my mind clear for the final exams that...

July, 1982, Milford, Ohio I woke up early on Friday morning to make breakfast for Kara and her mom before she went to work. Mrs. Blanchard was surprised, but very pleased. After her mom left for work, Kara gave me a fierce kiss. “Thanks for staying in and cooking breakfast for us,” Kara said. “I hope that doesn’t cause you trouble with Stephanie, with you breaking your normal routine.” “Don’t worry about it,” I said, kissing her back. “We got in a bit later than I expected, and she’ll...

July, 1983, Chicago, Illinois After Rosie left, I stripped the sheets from my bed, as well as the cover of the duvet, and tossed everything into the washing machine. I lit a lavender candle in the room, and then swept and dusted. I did a quick spot-check of the rest of the house and noticed that the tub in the sauna needed to be cleaned. I scrubbed it, then mopped the sauna floor with a damp sponge mop. I finished cleaning the sauna about the time the washing machine finished, so I moved...

May 26, 1991, Iron Mountain, Michigan “Shall we see if we can find a farm?” I asked at breakfast on Sunday morning. “That sounds like a great idea,” Jessica said. “There’s a visitor’s bureau in town,” Kara said. “I saw it when we were here the first time.” “I’m sorry I ruined that vacation,” Jessica said. “Ruined?” I protested. “Are you kidding? August, 1984, Chicago, Illinois The rest of the week proceeded as expected - class on Wednesday, as well as the usual visit from Penny, work on Thursday, and class on Friday. Kara and I had lunch together at IIT, Sofia practiced her driving and parking, and I hung out with Mark Agnini after class for beers. Staci and I got into a couple of interesting debates about the Old Testament that Mark had to break up to allow others in the class to participate. She was very much of the ‘directly...

March 25, 2000, Chicago, Illinois “What time do I need to have you home?” “8:00pm will be fine,” Misty replied. “My parents are in Normal visiting my brother at Illinois State. They aren’t supposed to be home before 10:00pm.” Misty and I were in my car on the way to the NIKA apartment which, fortunately, was not being used. With our expansion, it was in more or less regular use, and that meant I didn’t have access to it as often as I would have liked. I was glad there had been a delay in...

A WellLived Life Book 1 BirgitChapter 7 Setting the Course of My Life

June 1977 Friday ended up being a non-event. The more I thought about it, the more I was sure that there was no way on this earth I could say what happened between Birgit and me was a sin. Calling it a sin would debase it into a meaningless act. I could never do that. And the more I thought about Jennie McGrath, the more sure I was that I couldn’t call what she did for me a sin, either. If the church was right, I was going to hell. And frankly, there was no way that could be true. So I...

“So, how should we do these Stone’s songs?” Phil asked at our rehearsal session. “I think we all know the music, we just need to come up with a pretty awesome arrangement; we don’t want to sound like yet another cheap cover band.” “I had some ideas, if it’s okay for me to make some suggestions,” Allison said. “Of course it is,” Phil said. “Everyone can have a say, there’s no rule that says you can’t participate in the discussion.” “Thanks, Phil, I guess being the newest here, I’m a bit...

January 19, 1989, En-Route from LAX to ORD When the engines of the plane started, Jeri reached over and took my hand. She held it while we pushed away from the gate, and taxied for takeoff. Her grip tightened a bit as we hurtled down the runway, but nothing like the death grip she’d had on my arm for the flight out. The plane roared its way into the air and once we leveled out, Jeri’s grip loosened but she didn’t let go of my hand. “How are you doing?” I asked with a touch of...

September 1982, Chicago, Illinois The weekend was quiet and besides homework, I worked on the program changes for Frank, called Karin, Tatyana, and Kara, and hung out with my usual study group. Monday was refreshingly normal. On Tuesday morning, I handed Katy my completed intake form. She put it in an envelope and stuck it in her bag. She said she’d let me know soon about the interview. On Tuesday afternoon, after having lunch with Stephie, I made my rounds and then I headed over to Sigma...

A WellLived Life Book 7 Kara IIChapter 35 An Interview and Some New Friends

October 1982, Chicago, Illinois The drive back to Chicago was as uneventful as usual, and I arrived at the apartment just before 6:00pm. When I arrived, Elyse and Stephie were sitting on the couch and Jackie was sitting on the loveseat. Stephie hopped up as I opened the door and greeted me with a hug and a kiss. “Hi, Peaches!” I said. “Glad you’re home, Yankee!” “Hi, Steve,” Elyse and Jackie both said. “Hey,” I replied. “How was the weekend?” “Well, it was just Kurt with me, Stephie,...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 3 JessicaChapter 52 Lifestyle Choices

June 11, 1989, Chicago, Illinois It was just after 3:00am when I kissed Trish goodbye. She’d been an enthusiastic, energetic, and adventurous lover. We’d done just about anything either of us could think of, though her breasts weren’t large enough for a tit-fuck. The last time had been in the shower where we’d ostensibly gone to clean up afterwards, but instead I ended up taking her from behind as she leaned against the wall of the shower. “I think I’ll have you again, Steve Adams,” she...

A WellLived Life Book 1 BirgitChapter 38 Freshman Year Ends

May 1978 The first couple of weeks in May were busy with school, work, and friends. Except for Becky, I didn’t even have any dates. But I was OK with that. Well, almost OK. I wanted to see Anna, but it likely wasn’t going to happen until school was out. I had tutoring sessions with Melanie, but she still wouldn’t talk to me about anything other than Spanish. Barely a hello. I was grateful for the tutoring, but it was maddening seeing my friend this way. I hoped someday she could understand...

A WellLived Life Book 6 Kara IChapter 44 Spring Break 1982 Part I

March, 1982, Milford, Ohio As I drove along I-65, I thought about what Stephanie had asked for and what Bethany had said without even knowing about the request. Of course, because Bethany and I were so in tune, she might have actually had an idea that I was struggling with getting involved with my sister again. I kept turning it over and over in my mind and I kept coming to the same conclusion — that I shouldn’t do it. I was torn between doing what Stephanie wanted and doing what Kara and...

September 7, 1992, Chicago, Illinois “That went reasonably well,” Michelle said when her parents drove off. “There were a few times I thought my expression would give away something I shouldn’t. You were messing with me, weren’t you?” She grabbed both my hands and smiled, “I was telling the truth, in my own way. Thank you!” She leaned forward and kissed my cheek. “So, what’s left?” I asked. “To visit UofC tomorrow and formally withdraw from classes. To spend some time with you and your...

October 1981, Chicago, Illinois I arrived back at the apartment just before 10:00pm and saw the address for the party. I decided I wasn’t particularly interested in going so I put on some music, poured myself a glass of wine, and started reading more about Russia. I was alternating between the history and culture book and the Communist Party book, decided on the history and culture book for this time. I didn’t get much reading done because I was thinking about Tatyana, which led me to...

January 23, 1996, Chicago, Illinois “Father, bless!” I said, greeting Father Basil with upturned palms. “Bless you, Stephen,” he said as I kissed his hand. The waiter showed us to a quiet table along the wall of Roditys in Greektown. He took our drink orders and was back quickly. We placed our food orders right away and he left to put them in with the kitchen. “I’m not quite sure how to address this, so I’m just going to ask you bluntly. Are you the father of Michelle’s baby?” I shook my...

June 29, 1995, Chicago, Illinois On Thursday, I finally had lunch with Melissa again, something I hadn’t been looking forward to. Much like with Cèlia, Melissa and I had passed an inflection point and I was left with sub-optimal paths forward. I’d been struggling with the possible solutions, and all of them had pitfalls. When I walked into Takumi, I had something of a plan. Whether it was good or not would only be known once everything played out. “I spoke to my wives,” I said after we’d...

December 5, 2000, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota “I had a good time last night,” I said. “I was surprised you invited a friend!” Mary laughed as we walked into the exam room, “Naomi had a good time as well. You know what a Resident’s life is like.” I nodded, “No social life.” “Exactly. You guys seemed to hit it off pretty well.” “Yes, but I’m not here for that!” “You’re everywhere for that, and you know it!” I couldn’t help but laugh. “Let’s just say that you hit the sweet spot -...

A WellLived Life Book 3 PiaChapter 25 The Puzzle and the Cat Part II

March 1980, Hovås/Göteborg, Sweden I woke early as usual, but just enjoyed being in bed with Katt. When she woke, she hopped out of bed and pulled a robe out of her closet and handed it to me. “There’s a spare toothbrush in the bathroom. Go have your shower, then we’ll have breakfast after I have my shower.” I quickly showered and brushed my teeth, and went back to Katt’s room. She went to shower and came back a few minutes later. She dressed, and I got a very good look at her sexy body...

I spent most of my time acting as a manservant to Sensei Robert and Sensei Hiro.” “He who will lead, must first serve,” I said. “Someday, I’m going to send you to Sensei Hiro, should he live long enough. A WellLived Life Book 8 StephieChapter 61 Anala Part II

August, 1983, Chicago, Illinois I walked in the near 90°F heat to Carla’s place. I was grateful that the humidity of the morning had dropped significantly; otherwise the heat would have been unbearable. By the time I walked up the steps to the apartment over the photography studio and knocked on her door, I had broken into a light sweat. Carla answered almost immediately and invited me inside her studio apartment. The air was moderately cool, and the window air conditioner was running full...

July 1982, Milford, Ohio On Tuesday morning, I kissed Kara goodbye and headed to my parents’ house for my usual morning routine with my little sister. She was happy that I could spend the morning with her and asked to take a walk, so we weren’t in the house with my mom. “Let me guess — this walk will end in the clearing,” I said with a smile. “Yes,” she said, taking my hand as we walked down Overlook towards Klondyke. March 13, 1994, Chicago, Illinois “Hi, Steve!” Ailea said when she opened the door. “Hi,” I replied, accepting the offered hug. There was no touching of lips, just of cheeks, and I wondered if I’d misread her intentions at her birthday lunch, or if, perhaps, she detected my reluctance to return the offered affection. “Lunch is ready, so go ahead and sit. I’ll bring it in from the kitchen.” I went to the low table, sat down, and a minute later, Ailea brought miso soup and sushi, our usual...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 10 BridgetChapter 72 An Explosive Discovery

April 3, 1997, Dallas, Texas “Remember what I said about drinking too much,” I said, as I poured bourbon into three cups. We’d stopped at a liquor store, bought a bottle of Blanton’s, and then returned to the small suite I’d reserved at the Westin. Deborah’s room was down the hall, and Krissy’s was two floors below. Krissy’s comment had caught me a bit off guard, but I hadn’t reacted visibly. I didn’t know her quite well enough to know if she’d been teasing with Deborah, so I was being...

September 1, 1987, Chicago, Illinois “I heard that you have some kind of plan to help Ed,” I said to Connie. “There’s no plan,” she replied. “A witness who saw the shopkeeper alive after Ed left came forward.” That sounded convenient, and I wondered if the witness was real or someone that Anthony had put forward to solve the problem. August 17, 1997, Chicago, Illinois We finished lunch and Marissa and the younger kids went to play, but Natalie sat with the adults to talk, with coffee, tea, or soft drinks. The Sarcus were very comfortable, but the Heaths were still struggling. July 1979 — Falkenberg, Sweden On Friday, when I got back from my run, Pam was in her bra and panties again. I whistled at her, she giggled, then finished dressing. I showered, and we went to breakfast and finished up our last day. Once class was done, we were pretty much free. November 8, 1993, Chicago, Illinois A dark fog swirled before my eyes as I tried to take stock. My head hurt, badly. I felt something on my face and realized, dimly, it was an oxygen mask. My right hand was uncomfortable and I recognized the feeling of an IV and pulse-oximeter. My left arm ached fiercely. On my chest I felt the pads and wires of an EKG. I didn’t feel anything else wrong as I continued taking inventory. I tried to open my eyes, but the fog didn’t clear. I tried to speak, but...

August, 1983, Chicago, Illinois In the morning Anala and I ran as we had the previous time, then showered together, carefully washing each other’s bodies in an intimate but non-sexual way. After our shower we went to the kitchen and I made breakfast and we sat down to eat. “Steve, may I make a suggestion?” she asked. “Sure.” “Broaden your circle of friends. May 1979 The limo dropped me at home about 9:00pm. I took my stuff to my room, stripped, and hung up the tux. The rest of the things went into the hamper. I took a shower, put on shorts and a t-shirt, and walked down the hall into my dad’s office.
