July 8, 1997, Chicago, Illinois

“Is it really that surprising?” Leah asked.

“I suppose not,” I replied. “I just didn’t read too much into the kiss on the cheek.”

“I didn’t think it was a good idea to kiss you on the lips with all those people around, because I had no idea who they were or what they would think. You were VERY careful with our dance, so I kind of followed your lead.”

Which showed very mature thinking on her part. Both of these girls were exactly the kind of students I needed in the Rap Sessions. Their entire approach showed clear thinking, as well as patience, and discretion, all of which marked them as perfect candidates for a dalliance, or, less likely in my view, a ‘random deflowering’. They didn’t give off that aura, though I had no idea how much actual experience they had. The ‘Evil Steve’ wondered if they’d be willing to have a threesome, but the ‘Good Steve’ didn’t think asking was a good idea. On the other hand, if he did ask, he might well be the ‘luckiest dumb boy in the long and storied history of dumb boys’, as Stephanie liked to put it.

“Very perceptive,” I replied. “And it shows a level of discretion and maturity that I think is very important in life.”

Leah smiled, “Can I ask you something?”

“Sure.”

“How come you can do stuff like this? I mean, most guys wouldn’t be allowed to think about it, let alone do it!”

I chuckled, “The key to being able to safely think about it is not to talk about it with someone who wouldn’t approve! In fact, that’s true about quite a few things you might do in life. As I said, discretion is important, and that means being smart about what you say and what you do; not just in public, but also in private.

“In my case, there’s quite a bit of history, which we can discuss at some point if you want, but the bottom line is that I’ve almost always been involved with more than one girl at a time, for various reasons. Kara has known me since High School and has accepted me for who I was, and accepts me for who I’ve become. When we met Jessica, we found someone who we both liked very much and who we wanted involved in our lives. And she wanted us involved in hers.

“It took some time, a long time, really, to get things to a stable point, but much of that was because of the rigors of medical school and Residency. But when the three of us agreed to be together, we also agreed that I would continue to have freedom to bond with women in the way in which I always had. The girls who were the closest to me, and advised me, were also ones I made love with. There were other girls, too, but the key thing, at least for me, is the joining of two kindred spirits.

“Now, to be honest, there are other situations where the girls and I just want to be together, for whatever reason, and we are. Except in those cases, I try to develop true intimacy, and if that happens, then sex is not only possible, but common. It doesn’t happen every time, with every girl. For example, Elizabeth is an intimate friend, but I’ve never been physically intimate with her. She doesn’t believe in sleeping with married men, so it’s not even an option.”

“But your marriage is different, right?”

“Yes. But remember, Elizabeth makes the rules for Elizabeth. She’s being true to herself, and isn’t overly concerned about what other people do. The only person she really has to concern herself with is Ben, but that’s between the two of them and none of my business. I have another very close, very intimate friend with whom I’ve soaked naked and cuddled, also naked, in our whirlpool, but with whom I’ve never had sex precisely for the same reason. And to be completely honest, I have a similar rule.”

“Wait!” Liv protested. “You won’t have sex with a married woman? How does that even make sense?”

“Similar, not the same. I am exceedingly cautious about married women because unless I can understand their relationships with their husbands well enough to be absolutely sure that there is true consent by all parties, I can’t do it. In simple terms - no cheating.”

“What do you mean by true consent?”

“Something more than acquiescence. Let me give you an example. You’re with a guy and you’re doing stuff and one thing leads to another and you have sex with him, but it just ‘happens’. Compare that to talking about it, even briefly, and saying ‘yes, I want to do that’. Do you see the difference?”

“Sort of.”

“Let me ask this way - in the first scenario, do you think it’s possible for one or both of you to get so excited you could go further than you intended to, or perhaps even wanted to?”

“Probably.”

“Do you see the difference now?”

“Yes! One is you know you intend to do it, and both people know. The other one just kind of happens.”

“Exactly. Now, with the husband, I have to be reasonably sure I’m not going to mess up their relationship. So to me, that means he has to affirmatively say ‘yes’, not just say ‘OK’ or that he doesn’t care, or ‘she can do what she wants’.”

“I never thought about things that way. That’s how my friend I told you about ended up doing it when she was, uhm, younger. She and a guy were just fooling around but got so excited they did it. He felt really bad afterwards, but she didn’t.”

I nodded, “Often it’s the other way around. I had one of those where things went too far, and even though the girl never once protested, and she actively participated, the next day she expressed regret because she’d done more than she wanted to. I learned my lesson there. You HAVE to know what the rules are, what the limits are, and know the other person isn’t under the influence of alcohol or drugs, or doesn’t feel compelled to do it.”

“You mean like guys saying ‘if you loved me you would’?” Leah asked. “So the girl feels like she has to do it because she loves him?”

“Yes, and any guy who uses a line like that is complete scum. And she’s not REALLY consenting, is she?”

“No,” Liv replied. “Even though she does it, she doesn’t really want to.”

“By the way, this is a conversation we’ll have with the group at some point in the Fall. When we do, let others think about it and talk before you give the answers. You’ve sort of snuck a peek at the course syllabus and the exam answer sheet.”

“Now I understand why you wanted to have lunch together! You wanted to be sure.”

“Among other things, yes. But also to get to know you better.”

“Pretty much any guy I know who got me alone in an apartment would try to have me in bed the minute the door closed,” Leah declared.

“I have a question for you,” I said. “What is the most important organ when it comes to sex?”

Liv smirked, “Well, after what went on with your friend Clayton, I can guess what most people would say. But there is no way you think that it’s that. Hmm ... your brain?”

“Why do you say that?”

“Because everything you see or do or touch or taste has to be processed by your brain. And from what you said before, you think ‘smart’ is sexy!”

“Very, very good! I think you could pass the final exam with flying colors.”

Liv smirked, “And what’s that?”

I laughed, “No, not THAT! The final exam for the Rap Sessions is life. When you reach the end, can you look back and say you’ve had a ‘well-lived life’?”

“You really seem to like talking about this stuff.”

I nodded, “I find it very satisfying and fulfilling, and if I can help correct the course that society is on, so much the better. And in the end, all things considered, finding kindred spirits to help in that struggle is the most important thing any of us can do. So that’s what I’d like you to do. Call it evangelism, if you will.”

“Are you concerned because we’re both here?” Liv asked.

I chuckled, “For all the things you like about me, I can still think like a teenage boy and admit that having you both at the same time DID cross my mind.”

They both laughed, which I felt was a good sign.

“But so did the idea we might spend the afternoon just talking,” I replied. “Because I make no assumptions about anything.”

“Can I tell you something weird?” Leah asked.

“Sure.”

“The fact that you aren’t trying makes me want to even more!”

I chuckled, “My secret is out!”

“It’s on purpose?”

“Yes, but not to to make you feel that way; rather, it’s because of what I said before about developing intimacy. Sex is part of intimacy, but it’s ultimately a small part. What we’re doing now is the truly important part. That’s another lesson - don’t confuse sex with intimacy. It’s part of intimacy, as I said, but it isn’t all of it by any stretch of the imagination. Don’t let society confuse you on that. And don’t let society tell you what sex ought to mean. It means exactly what you and your partner want it to mean, nothing more.

“That said, it always has meaning of some kind. And it’s that meaning you need to worry about because having sex, in any context, with anyone, will change you, your partner, and the relationship. And it might do so in unpredictable ways. And that goes back to my point about consent and being sure you’re prepared to deal with the consequences, whatever they might be.”

“Which is why you insist on the STD test,” Liv said. “But you never mentioned birth control.”

“Neither did you!” I grinned.

“You can reprimand me for this, but I assumed you would take care of it.”

“I will reprimand you, because that is a BAD assumption! My advice to you is that if you think there’s a chance you’re going to have sex you, discuss birth control, or, at a minimum, carry a condom or two in your purse, just in case. In this specific case, I had a vasectomy, so there is no realistic chance I could get you pregnant.”

“But it could happen?”

“No method, except abstinence is universally perfect. While I had several tests to ensure the procedure worked, there have been cases where it didn’t, and guys didn’t take the tests to be sure. To put it in movie terms, ‘Life finds a way’. I have a test each year at my physical, and it’s been six years, so there is virtually no risk. Statistically, you would be more likely to win the lottery, get struck by lightning, AND travel to the moon before it happened!

“And just a point on that - with most people, I’d simply say ‘no risk’ and leave it at that because it is, effectively, no risk. But I wanted to make a point to the two of you about thinking through the potential risks, however infinitesimal, before you decide what to do. I do have rubbers with me, because I can’t assume you’d trust me about having had the procedure.”

“Why would a guy lie about that? I mean, all you do is set yourself up for child support and a VERY pissed off girl!”

“Some guys hate rubbers so much that they’ll take the risk, assuming that an abortion can take care of any issues. I think that’s a terrible approach, and birth control is an absolute requirement unless you intend to conceive. After seven kids, I decided I’d had all the kids I planned to have, and given my lifestyle, a vasectomy was the right approach. It also saved my wives from having their tubes tied.”

“You need to come talk to our health class!” Leah said. “Nobody explained things even this much, and I know there’s more!”

“Never happen,” Liv groused. “You heard about that ‘parents committee’ that is trying to limit what they’re allowed to teach in health class.”

“Of all the stupid ideas I can think of,” I said, “that is perhaps the most stupid. Nobody needs a book to figure out how to have sex! And the quickest, surest way to ensure an outbreak of an STD or a rash of unintended pregnancies is to stop teaching proper sex ed! To be blunt, teenagers have been screwing since, well, forever, and they aren’t going to stop anytime soon!”

“I think I just realized something,” Leah said. “I was thinking about everything you said, and I don’t know for sure if you want to have sex with me. I want to, but that’s not enough, is it?”

“No, it’s not. If the shoe were on the other foot...”

“Yeah. It’s like the guys who think girls owe them sex.”

“Is that possible?” I asked.

“I don’t think so.”

“Good, because it’s not.”

“So do you want to?”

I nodded, “Yes, I do.”

“I think Liv should go first because she arranged this.”

“What?!” I asked in mock dismay. “No threesome?”

“Maybe next time!” Leah teased.

I chuckled, “Nicely played!”

“I’m learning from you!”

“Now I’m truly frightened!”

“Do we have enough time?” Liv asked.

“Well, I need to be back in the office at some point, but I have enough time to spend about ninety minutes with each of you. I hope that’s enough.”

“So it can take longer than five minutes?”

“A lot longer,” I replied with a grin. “Leah, you can turn on the TV or stereo if you want.”

I took Liv’s hand and led her to the first bedroom, and shut the door behind us. I took her in my arms and we exchanged a soft kiss which quickly turned fierce, and she squeezed her arms to hold me tightly. She ran her hands over my back as we kissed, and I cupped her small, firm butt and pulled her against me. Liv moaned softly into my mouth and began grinding against me. She broke the kiss and took a couple of gasping breaths.

“If I suck you will you do what Misty said? Bang me until I can’t walk or talk?”

“If that’s what you want, I’m happy to oblige!”

We kissed again and scrambled out of our clothes. I took in her trim, sexy body, with small breasts capped with tiny pink nipples, a flat stomach, and with a thin vertical strip of pubic hair leading down to plump, fleshy labia. Liv gently pushed me towards the bed and I sat down. She knelt in front of me and planted a soft kiss on the tip of my glans. She opened her mouth and slowly took my glans into her mouth, sucking gently and moving her tongue around it, then bobbing slowly.

She slowly experimented with her motions and eventually developed a pleasurable rhythm that had her taking me about halfway into her mouth. My initial thought that she had limited experience seemed to be confirmed, but that didn’t diminish how good her mouth felt, and I simply let the pleasure build until I groaned and came in her mouth. She continued sucking and bobbing and licking until I finished, and I felt her swallow before she released me.

I stood, helped her up, and we exchanged a soft French kiss, then I helped her into the bed and got in next to her. I kissed her again, then moved my face over her small breast and took nearly all of it into my mouth. It was quite the change from Cindi, and was something I strongly preferred. Liv ran her fingers through my hair and moaned softly as I suckled first her right, then her left, breast.

I kissed my way down her sternum, across her stomach, and along the strip of pubic hair until I came to her plump labia. I probed gently with my tongue, licking along her slit, getting my first taste of her fresh, but spicy, juices. Slight pressure from her hand encouraged me to press my tongue between them and into her tunnel, coating it with her fluids. I moved my tongue upwards and flicked Liv’s clit, causing her to squeak and buck her hips.

She was very sensitive, though not quite as sensitive as Elyse had been when we were teenagers, but enough that Liv had a series of small orgasms, one right after the other. I was careful not to overstimulate her to the point of pain, but to keep her right at the boundary past which pleasure would be too great.

Her reaction, as well as the taste of her juices which now coated my face, caused me to become hard, so I lifted my head, scooted up, and lodged my glans against her now slippery labia. I looked down at her and her eyes were closed, so I leaned down and kissed her. Her eyes flew open at the realization she was tasting herself, but she didn’t try to break the kiss. I did, though.

“What do you want me to do?” I asked quietly.

“Bang me until I can’t walk or talk!” she demanded.

I pushed forward firmly, and she groaned as I embedded myself about halfway. I pulled back and with a second firm thrust, our pubic bones mashed together. Her tunnel was warm, snug, and slick with her juices, making it clear I could do what she wanted without delay. I lowered my head to kiss her again, then pulled my dick most of the way from her sopping pussy, and thrust forward firmly. She groaned again into my mouth, and wrapped her legs around my thighs. I began moving, faster and harder, and did my level best to accomplish her request.

She had several small orgasms and I had to stop kissing her to allow her to breathe, which she did in big gasps and our bodies slammed against each other and I did my best to drive her right through the mattress and the floor below the bed. Liv didn’t say anything, she just gasped for breath, moaned or groaned, and basically held on for dear life, occasionally raising her hips to meet a thrust, but mostly just letting me do the work.

As we fucked, her legs slowly moved up my thighs, over my butt, and eventually they were wrapped around the small of my back, which made it even easier to satisfy her request. I lost track of how many small orgasms she had, but she had two larger ones, and after nearly twenty minutes of pounding, I felt another big one coming on. I did my best to time things and managed to cum just seconds before she had a huge orgasm which caused her body to shudder and her muscles to spasm tightly around my shaft.

Death and Damnation Book 2 of Poachers ProgressChapter 7 Chacircteau Blanchard

Krish had advised me, before we buried the the young Chasseur of the Guard officer, that if I intended disinterring him at a later date then certain actions needed to be carried out to prevent a rapid decomposing of the corpse. The first was to wrap the body in a tightly tied blanket, or ground sheet, keeping the material close to the corpse. The depth of the burial should be at least six feet, which would save the corpse from being disturbed by ploughing, or being dug up by animals. The...

A WellLived Life Book 6 Kara IChapter 5 Housemates

August 1981, Chicago, Illinois On Sunday morning, I made my usual call to Karin. I described everything in the apartment and all the things I’d done during the week, including the reception. Both of us would start school in a week and we were both looking forward to it. When we finished talking, I went out for my run, showered, and ate breakfast. I made some tea, started a load of laundry, and then turned on the stereo. I put on an REO Speedwagon album and then relaxed on the couch with the...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 3 JessicaChapter 63 Back to Work

August 21, 1989, Chicago, Illinois “Unbelievable,” I said when I read the headline from the Chicago Tribune. “It says here that Solidarity activist Tadeusz Mazowiecki was nominated to be Prime Minister of Poland.” I hadn’t had a chance to read the paper on Sunday because it hadn’t been delivered before we left for the race track in Michigan. “So now what?” Kara asked. “We’re in totally uncharted territory. Your guess is as good as anyone’s right about now.” “Steve, do you have a minute?”...

A WellLived Life Book 8 StephieChapter 36 My Lifes Journey

July, 1983, Chicago, Illinois I woke up early on the First of July, because my body clock was still set to Swedish time. The flight back had been long but uneventful, and I was happy that the businessman in the seat next to me hadn’t wanted to talk. I read, wrote some longhand journal entries, ate, and generally relaxed while the plane zipped over the Atlantic. I’d come home, taken a sauna, eaten a light meal, and gone straight to bed, not bothering to check messages, look at the mail that...

A WellLived Life Book 1 BirgitChapter 4 Calm Before the Storm

June 1977 When I got home, I grabbed a Coke and some chips and went right to my room. I didn’t think I could deal with my parents or Jeff or Stephanie. I just needed to be by myself. That wouldn’t seem odd to anyone, because I often went to my room to read. In addition, I now had the TV I’d received for my birthday. I flipped it on to WXIX Channel 19 and reruns of Gilligan’s Island and Green Acres played in the background while I read. I had to get my mind clear for the final exams that...

July, 1982, Milford, Ohio I woke up early on Friday morning to make breakfast for Kara and her mom before she went to work. Mrs. Blanchard was surprised, but very pleased. After her mom left for work, Kara gave me a fierce kiss. “Thanks for staying in and cooking breakfast for us,” Kara said. “I hope that doesn’t cause you trouble with Stephanie, with you breaking your normal routine.” “Don’t worry about it,” I said, kissing her back. “We got in a bit later than I expected, and she’ll...

A WellLived Life Book 8 StephieChapter 38 Jennifer

July, 1983, Chicago, Illinois After Rosie left, I stripped the sheets from my bed, as well as the cover of the duvet, and tossed everything into the washing machine. I lit a lavender candle in the room, and then swept and dusted. I did a quick spot-check of the rest of the house and noticed that the tub in the sauna needed to be cleaned. I scrubbed it, then mopped the sauna floor with a damp sponge mop. I finished cleaning the sauna about the time the washing machine finished, so I moved...

May 26, 1991, Iron Mountain, Michigan “Shall we see if we can find a farm?” I asked at breakfast on Sunday morning. “That sounds like a great idea,” Jessica said. “There’s a visitor’s bureau in town,” Kara said. “I saw it when we were here the first time.” “I’m sorry I ruined that vacation,” Jessica said. “Ruined?” I protested. “Are you kidding? Getting you back was way more important than a few days of vacation!” “I agree,” Kara added. “Jess, you know exactly how bad off Steve was...

August, 1984, Chicago, Illinois The rest of the week proceeded as expected - class on Wednesday, as well as the usual visit from Penny, work on Thursday, and class on Friday. Kara and I had lunch together at IIT, Sofia practiced her driving and parking, and I hung out with Mark Agnini after class for beers. Staci and I got into a couple of interesting debates about the Old Testament that Mark had to break up to allow others in the class to participate. She was very much of the ‘directly...

A WellLived Life 3 Book 1 SuzanneChapter 7 Reaching the Peak

March 25, 2000, Chicago, Illinois “What time do I need to have you home?” “8:00pm will be fine,” Misty replied. “My parents are in Normal visiting my brother at Illinois State. They aren’t supposed to be home before 10:00pm.” Misty and I were in my car on the way to the NIKA apartment which, fortunately, was not being used. With our expansion, it was in more or less regular use, and that meant I didn’t have access to it as often as I would have liked. I was glad there had been a delay in...

A WellLived Life Book 1 BirgitChapter 7 Setting the Course of My Life

June 1977 Friday ended up being a non-event. The more I thought about it, the more I was sure that there was no way on this earth I could say what happened between Birgit and me was a sin. Calling it a sin would debase it into a meaningless act. I could never do that. And the more I thought about Jennie McGrath, the more sure I was that I couldn’t call what she did for me a sin, either. If the church was right, I was going to hell. And frankly, there was no way that could be true. So I...

January 19, 1989, En-Route from LAX to ORD When the engines of the plane started, Jeri reached over and took my hand. She held it while we pushed away from the gate, and taxied for takeoff. Her grip tightened a bit as we hurtled down the runway, but nothing like the death grip she’d had on my arm for the flight out. The plane roared its way into the air and once we leveled out, Jeri’s grip loosened but she didn’t let go of my hand. “How are you doing?” I asked with a touch of...

Death and Damnation Book 2 of Poachers ProgressChapter 9 Annette Blanchard

A warm beam of sunlight played on my face, and under its benign caress I swam slowly up from a deep sleep. For a moment I could not recall where I was, but then realised I was lying in the four-poster bed in Annette’s boudoir. It was the most comfortable bed I could ever recall being in. The thick luxurious mattress, stuffed with eider down, was both supportive to my body and yet comforting. I sat up. The pillow next to mine was rumpled, and on pulling back the sheet saw the unmistakable...

June 11, 1989, Chicago, Illinois It was just after 3:00am when I kissed Trish goodbye. She’d been an enthusiastic, energetic, and adventurous lover. We’d done just about anything either of us could think of, though her breasts weren’t large enough for a tit-fuck. The last time had been in the shower where we’d ostensibly gone to clean up afterwards, but instead I ended up taking her from behind as she leaned against the wall of the shower. “I think I’ll have you again, Steve Adams,” she...

May 1978 The first couple of weeks in May were busy with school, work, and friends. Except for Becky, I didn’t even have any dates. But I was OK with that. Well, almost OK. I wanted to see Anna, but it likely wasn’t going to happen until school was out. I had tutoring sessions with Melanie, but she still wouldn’t talk to me about anything other than Spanish. Barely a hello. I was grateful for the tutoring, but it was maddening seeing my friend this way. I hoped someday she could understand...

A WellLived Life Book 6 Kara IChapter 44 Spring Break 1982 Part I

March, 1982, Milford, Ohio As I drove along I-65, I thought about what Stephanie had asked for and what Bethany had said without even knowing about the request. Of course, because Bethany and I were so in tune, she might have actually had an idea that I was struggling with getting involved with my sister again. I kept turning it over and over in my mind and I kept coming to the same conclusion — that I shouldn’t do it. I was torn between doing what Stephanie wanted and doing what Kara and...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 6 SamanthaChapter 21 Georg and Maria

September 7, 1992, Chicago, Illinois “That went reasonably well,” Michelle said when her parents drove off. “There were a few times I thought my expression would give away something I shouldn’t. You were messing with me, weren’t you?” She grabbed both my hands and smiled, “I was telling the truth, in my own way. Thank you!” She leaned forward and kissed my cheek. “So, what’s left?” I asked. “To visit UofC tomorrow and formally withdraw from classes. To spend some time with you and your...

A WellLived Life Book 6 Kara IChapter 14 A Southern Belle a Surprise Proposal two Cheerleaders an Old Flame and a Girl Back Home Part I

October 1981, Chicago, Illinois I arrived back at the apartment just before 10:00pm and saw the address for the party. I decided I wasn’t particularly interested in going so I put on some music, poured myself a glass of wine, and started reading more about Russia. I was alternating between the history and culture book and the Communist Party book, decided on the history and culture book for this time. I didn’t get much reading done because I was thinking about Tatyana, which led me to...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 9 KamiChapter 38 And Sometimes It Stinks To Be Big

January 23, 1996, Chicago, Illinois “Father, bless!” I said, greeting Father Basil with upturned palms. “Bless you, Stephen,” he said as I kissed his hand. The waiter showed us to a quiet table along the wall of Roditys in Greektown. He took our drink orders and was back quickly. We placed our food orders right away and he left to put them in with the kitchen. “I’m not quite sure how to address this, so I’m just going to ask you bluntly. Are you the father of Michelle’s baby?” I shook my...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 8 NIKAChapter 68 The Rules

June 29, 1995, Chicago, Illinois On Thursday, I finally had lunch with Melissa again, something I hadn’t been looking forward to. Much like with Cèlia, Melissa and I had passed an inflection point and I was left with sub-optimal paths forward. I’d been struggling with the possible solutions, and all of them had pitfalls. When I walked into Takumi, I had something of a plan. Whether it was good or not would only be known once everything played out. “I spoke to my wives,” I said after we’d...

December 5, 2000, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota “I had a good time last night,” I said. “I was surprised you invited a friend!” Mary laughed as we walked into the exam room, “Naomi had a good time as well. You know what a Resident’s life is like.” I nodded, “No social life.” “Exactly. You guys seemed to hit it off pretty well.” “Yes, but I’m not here for that!” “You’re everywhere for that, and you know it!” I couldn’t help but laugh. “Let’s just say that you hit the sweet spot -...

A WellLived Life Book 3 PiaChapter 25 The Puzzle and the Cat Part II

March 1980, Hovås/Göteborg, Sweden I woke early as usual, but just enjoyed being in bed with Katt. When she woke, she hopped out of bed and pulled a robe out of her closet and handed it to me. “There’s a spare toothbrush in the bathroom. Go have your shower, then we’ll have breakfast after I have my shower.” I quickly showered and brushed my teeth, and went back to Katt’s room. She went to shower and came back a few minutes later. She dressed, and I got a very good look at her sexy body...

April 5, 1997, Chicago, Illinois “You missed cuddles this morning!” Birgit said accusingly when I walked into the house about 9:30am. “I know, Pumpkin, but I had a work emergency and had to go see Aunt Joyce and Grandpa A.” “And now we have to get ready for karate!” “I know. We’ll have some family time this afternoon. I don’t have any plans.” “Good!” I hugged her and the rest of the kids, then went to find Kara. We hugged and kissed, and went straight upstairs to get ready for...

September 3, 1989, Chicago, Illinois “Good morning, Sensei,” I said, bowing to Sensei Jim. “Good morning!” he said waving me to a chair in his office. “How was your trip?” I asked. “Enlightening. I spent most of my time acting as a manservant to Sensei Robert and Sensei Hiro.” “He who will lead, must first serve,” I said. “Someday, I’m going to send you to Sensei Hiro, should he live long enough. You understand.” “Does that mean you are now 6th Dan?” I...

October 29, 2000, Chicago, Illinois Birgit followed me as far as the stairs, then scooted upstairs when I went to the front door and opened it. “Hi!” Sophie said. “Hi!” I replied and held the door open so she could come into the house. I closed the door behind her then led her to my study where I waited until she went in, and then walked in, closing the door behind me. I nodded to one of the wingback chairs, she sat down in one, and I sat down in the other. “Is something wrong?” she...

A WellLived Life Book 8 StephieChapter 61 Anala Part II

August, 1983, Chicago, Illinois I walked in the near 90°F heat to Carla’s place. I was grateful that the humidity of the morning had dropped significantly; otherwise the heat would have been unbearable. By the time I walked up the steps to the apartment over the photography studio and knocked on her door, I had broken into a light sweat. Carla answered almost immediately and invited me inside her studio apartment. The air was moderately cool, and the window air conditioner was running full...

July 1982, Milford, Ohio On Tuesday morning, I kissed Kara goodbye and headed to my parents’ house for my usual morning routine with my little sister. She was happy that I could spend the morning with her and asked to take a walk, so we weren’t in the house with my mom. “Let me guess — this walk will end in the clearing,” I said with a smile. “Yes,” she said, taking my hand as we walked down Overlook towards Klondyke. As usual, we turned around and walked back, taking the path to the...

March 13, 1994, Chicago, Illinois “Hi, Steve!” Ailea said when she opened the door. “Hi,” I replied, accepting the offered hug. There was no touching of lips, just of cheeks, and I wondered if I’d misread her intentions at her birthday lunch, or if, perhaps, she detected my reluctance to return the offered affection. “Lunch is ready, so go ahead and sit. I’ll bring it in from the kitchen.” I went to the low table, sat down, and a minute later, Ailea brought miso soup and sushi, our usual...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 10 BridgetChapter 72 An Explosive Discovery

April 3, 1997, Dallas, Texas “Remember what I said about drinking too much,” I said, as I poured bourbon into three cups. We’d stopped at a liquor store, bought a bottle of Blanton’s, and then returned to the small suite I’d reserved at the Westin. Deborah’s room was down the hall, and Krissy’s was two floors below. Krissy’s comment had caught me a bit off guard, but I hadn’t reacted visibly. I didn’t know her quite well enough to know if she’d been teasing with Deborah, so I was being...

September 1, 1987, Chicago, Illinois “I heard that you have some kind of plan to help Ed,” I said to Connie. “There’s no plan,” she replied. “A witness who saw the shopkeeper alive after Ed left came forward.” That sounded convenient, and I wondered if the witness was real or someone that Anthony had put forward to solve the problem. August 17, 1997, Chicago, Illinois We finished lunch and Marissa and the younger kids went to play, but Natalie sat with the adults to talk, with coffee, tea, or soft drinks. The Sarcus were very comfortable, but the Heaths were still struggling. But, vitally, they hadn’t left and hadn’t insisted Natalie leave the group. “Can you explain how you developed this attitude and approach?” Chris asked. July 1979 — Falkenberg, Sweden On Friday, when I got back from my run, Pam was in her bra and panties again. I whistled at her, she giggled, then finished dressing. I showered, and we went to breakfast and finished up our last day. Once class was done, we were pretty much free. On Saturday, we’d have several optional activities and then on Sunday we’d head back to our host families. After dinner on Friday, I took Pam’s hand and we walked towards the river. July 1980, Over the North Atlantic We reached cruising altitude, and I settled back to read my book. Pam raised the armrest between us, snuggled close to me and read as well. The cabin crew offered drinks, and I had my first Coke in a year! Meal service began about an hour and a half into the flight. After the cabin crew picked up the trays and offered drinks again, they passed once more, offering headsets for the movie. Trevor and Maria took them, but Pam and I didn’t, instead we turned on...

November 8, 1993, Chicago, Illinois A dark fog swirled before my eyes as I tried to take stock. My head hurt, badly. I felt something on my face and realized, dimly, it was an oxygen mask. My right hand was uncomfortable and I recognized the feeling of an IV and pulse-oximeter. My left arm ached fiercely. On my chest I felt the pads and wires of an EKG. I didn’t feel anything else wrong as I continued taking inventory. I tried to open my eyes, but the fog didn’t clear. I tried to speak, but...

August, 1983, Chicago, Illinois In the morning Anala and I ran as we had the previous time, then showered together, carefully washing each other’s bodies in an intimate but non-sexual way. After our shower we went to the kitchen and I made breakfast and we sat down to eat. “Steve, may I make a suggestion?” she asked. “Sure.” “Broaden your circle of friends. Other than me, all of you are white, nominally Christian, 20-year-old Americans. And you don’t invite me to your Sunday...

He did, and I sat in the usual chair across from him. “She has a real problem, you know that, right?” he asked. “I do. May 1979 The limo dropped me at home about 9:00pm. I took my stuff to my room, stripped, and hung up the tux. The rest of the things went into the hamper. I took a shower, put on shorts and a t-shirt, and walked down the hall into my dad’s office. I saw no reason to put this off any longer. “Stephen, you need to explain yourself!” my mom demanded. “I was in Mrs. McGrath’s, well, Mrs. Sanders’ now, wedding, as I said.” “You walked her down the aisle! When we finished, Karin held me tight and refused to let me move off of her. “Sleep there, please,” she whispered. July 3, 1996, Chicago, Illinois I blinked several times and took a breath before responding. It didn’t help. July 1983, Milford, Ohio My drive to Ohio was filled with wild swings of emotion. I’d told Nancy that I’d come straight to her house and asked her to call my dad and let him know so that Stephanie wasn’t worried. March 6, 1987, Chicago, Illinois “This is a big improvement,” I said as the green flag dropped for the Goodwrench 500 at North Carolina Motor Speedway. Bill had taken the pole, and when the flag dropped, led the field into turn one. “His car seems fast,” Kara said. It was. From lap 90 to 143, the lead shifted a few times, mostly...
