Marcus Dolohov was carefully mapping out the movements of the young thirteen year old athlete Jenny Mc Donald. Jenny was not only a talented athlete but a brilliant young mind, highly regarded by her teachers and popular with her peers. Her parents were justifiably proud of their own daughter and chaperoned her to all her track meets and to her training nights at the local athletic club. After school she was picked up by one of three other mums who shared this task with Jenny's mum. In school while in the play ground she was usually a central part of a group of girls who seemed to move everywhere together. While this would make it difficult for any would be abductor to get her on her own Dolohov did not see this as an insuperable problem. He was a wizard after all. What he needed was to get close enough when she was with a single parent and he could use the imperius curse to bring them under his control.
He planned to use a memory charm on the mum and then set her free from the curse which would leave her confused and unable to give the muggle police any coherent story about what had actually happened. He had pin pointed one or two activities where he was likely to be able to do this.
Dudley, Luna and Petunia arrived home early on Sunday Evening. Dudley checked on Tunie's home work, saw she got something to drink and got her ready for bed, while Luna went into her office to prepare a report for the minister for magic and for the muggle prime minister. By the time Dudley came downstairs from reading Petunia's bed time story and getting her ready for sleep, Luna was in the process of sending an owl to the minister for magic and she had phoned for an appointment with the prime minister. Dudley entered the study and opened a small safe box which he kept in a floor to ceiling cupboard which had been set into one wall beside where a fireplace had once been. As Luna was finishing up he opened it and extracted a small jewel box containing his mother's engagement ring. He went over to the desk where Luna was sitting, and knelt beside her chair and said,
"Luna Lovegood, I hope you haven't change your mind and that you will still promise to be my wife by accepting this ring"
Luna had been so preoccupied with what she was doing that she had not realised what Dudley had been up to. Surprised by his kneeling presence and his reiteration of his proposal it took her a few second to realise what was going on, then she smiled and said,
"Yes Dudley Dursley, I will be more than happy to be your wife."
With that Dudley took her left hand in his and slipped the ring on to her finger. It was just a little loose but Luna held it up to the light and looked at it. It was a setting of five stones; a fairly large central diamond with two small sapphires and a smaller diamond on either side.
"It is beautiful Dudley. I will be so proud to wear this and to let everyone know that I am going to be your wife."
She stood up and pulled him to his feet and gave him a passionate kiss.
Later on Dudley pulled a bottle of sparkling wine from the fridge and they both drank a glass as the talked about their future plans. Luna told him that as soon as Oberon returned from carrying her message to the Minister for magic, she would dispatch him with another message, this time to her father. They decided that they would try and see him next weekend when they we down to see Professor McGonagall with Petunia. Luna said that she would ask him to come for the weekend to her house and introduce him to Dudley there.
They discussed where the wedding should be. This might be a little tricky Dudley suggested. There were not too many people he wanted to invite, one or two of his colleagues in the police with whom he had been close before Mag's death and her mum and dad, who were Tunie's grandparents and very much alive. Having said this they suddenly realised that they would have to meet with them before the wedding so that they could meet Luna.
"Will they mind very much that you are marrying again and think that I am taking Mag's place in your affections and as Tunie's mum?" Luna asked worriedly.
Dudley took her hand and said, "You don't have to worry on that score, Luna, Mag's mother, Mary has been going on at me for over a year now. She is constantly telling me that I am still a young man and that I should be dating again. She thinks that Tunie needs a new Mum."
"I hope she thinks I will be a suitable candidate for the post," Luna said. "Sometime in the near future we will have to speak to them about Tunie and the school she will be going to. It will be difficult to hide what she is from them since I would want them still to be involved in her life."
"I am sure she will, accept it, Mag's was truly Mary's daughter. Mary is a very down to earth and practical truly glad to hear you say that Luna. If you make Mary welcome in her role as a grandmother I am sure she will come to love you." Dudley responded; "As for the other matter we will just have to judge when the time is ripe to introduce the subject and after the initial surprise and shock, I am sure she will take it in her stride."
"But what about her husband?" Luna queried.
Dudley laughed, "He is a scientist, not one of the mad variety, but a bit of an absent minded professor." Said Dudley. "He is still besotted with Mary and even after 46 years of marriage is still amazed that someone so beautiful chose him for a husband. Where she leads he will follow and be fascinated to have his concepts about some aspect of the world turned on their head."
"What about having to keep it secret" Luna worried.
"Mary will see the need for that right away. She won't want anybody thinking her granddaughter is some kind of freak." Dudley told her.
At that Oberon had returned. Luna went to the study and prepared her letter to her father, before dispatching him on his second errand of the evening. Holding her hand up to the light and looking at the ring sparkling on her finger, she looked at Dudley and said.
"You know, I am so thrilled with this, that if the man who gave it to me would follow me upstairs, I think that gentleman might just get lucky tonight."
Dudley laughed and got to his feet.
"I will be right behind you my lady, but just remember that tomorrow the ring will have to go to the Jewellers"
"Nevertheless," said Luna, "You will have your reward." And she made her way to their bedroom.
During the week Luna talked to the prime minister but had little to tell him except that they expected the rapist to strike again. The only good thing she had informed him was the fact that he seemed to be working within a limited area and that if this pattern continued then the police felt they had a better chance of tracking him down. She also told him that it was going to be easy to work with the inspector and told him why.
She made the same report to the minister for magic but added for his information the events which had taken place between Harry and Dudley and also about her developing relationship with the inspector. By the time she was briefing Kingsley she was wearing the engagement ring which had returned from the jewellers before she left. As she spoke to him it adorned her finger once more. On seeing it the minister was suitably impressed and wished her well. Her minister agreed with her decision to include Harry and let him know what was going. On balance he felt it would be a good thing to have an auror, especially one with the power and influence of Harry Potter, and have willing to lend a hand if need be.
Dolohov's plans were almost complete. He had decided the best time to snatch the girl was at the point of her school pick up by her mother. He would act like a parent picking up a child of his own and get close enough to the mother to place the Imperius curse on her. Then he would take the child and free the mother from the curse which would leave her confused and still waiting for the girl to arrive. It would take a while for her to realise something was wrong before she started to look for her. By the time the police got involved he would be well clear of the area. Once he got her to his lair the fun would begin.
Once again the weekend arrived and Luna had things packed ready for yet another two days spent at her house and in contact with the wizard community. Dudley was finishing early and they were picking up Petunia from school at lunch time and going straight to her house. Her father would be arriving early evening for dinner but he wasn't staying the night as he had things he wanted to do the next day. She had also dispatched her owl to Professor McGonagall agreeing to bring Tunie and Dudley over to see her at ten o clock in Saturday morning. Both she and Dudley had agreed that they should have Harry, Ginny, Ron and Hermione over for lunch on the Sunday. It was clear the weekend was going to be rather a full one.
Once they arrived, Luna started to make the dinner for the family and her Father while Tunie and Dudley went out to explore the house's rather extensive grounds. The whole of the hill seemed to belong to the house so they wandered down to the burn which meandered round the bottom of the hill. Tunie had put on her wellie boots and spent ages splashing around in its shallow waters and jumping from rock to rock. Dudley enjoyed watching her acting like a normal happy eight year old expecting her at some point to fall in and necessitate a return up the hill to change out of wet clothes, but she never did. He wondered if this was due to her having an exceptional sense of balance or whether it was another manifestation of her unconscious magical ability. There was a loud crack from somewhere nearby and he looked up the hill to see Xenophilius disapparate to a spot half way between them and the house and start to walk up towards it.
He called to Tunie and told her that her new Grandfather had arrived and said they would have to go back to the house to meet him. They had explained to her earlier that she should think of him like this since he would be grandfather to any brother or sister that she might have once he and Luna were married.
Knowing her Father's penchant for wacky views Luna had worried about how he would get on with Luna and Dudley and warned the latter just to go with the flow. However, she need not have worried. After the introductions had been made and drinks had been poured Xenophilius seemed fascinated by Dudley's work as a detective in the muggle community and plied him with questions about how the muggle police went about their business.
After dinner Petunia went over to where her new grandfather sat and asked him to show her some magic. To her surprise her father conjured up various things that amused her daughter and spoke to her about witches and wizards and the things they could do. At one point she heard him saying to her that he was especially glad the Tunie was a witch. The perceptive little girl then asked him if he would have disappointed if she hadn't been able to do magic. Oh no Xenophilius had told her. He said that he would have been very pleased to have such a clever and pretty little girl as a granddaughter but since it was almost certain that any brothers or sister she had would be witches and wizards it meant that they would be able to share the same things. He went on to say that if they had been able to do magic she wasn't she might have felt a bit left out and it might have stopped them getting as close as brothers and sisters should be.
