November, 1983, Chicago, Illinois

November 1st was unseasonably warm, with the temperature reaching almost 70°F by the middle of the afternoon. But being it was Chicago, that couldn’t last. Soon enough the temperatures would fall far enough that running would be uncomfortable and I’d have to decide how to exercise during the winter. I’d thought about ice skating, but the most convenient indoor rink wasn’t all that convenient. It was on West Madison Street, a few blocks from the Chicago Stadium. That would be a twenty five minute drive to get there, and then a ten minute drive back to campus on school days.

It was funny, because it took me longer than that to take the bus to Västra Frölunda when I was living in Hovås and even longer still on the «spårvagn» from there to Schillerska. For some reason, taking public transportation made it better. I couldn’t figure out why, because I really liked driving my car. In the end, I decided to see if there was open skating early in the morning. I’d also have to account for days when it snowed.

There was actually an outdoor rink on the campus of the University of Chicago that was run by the Park District, but it wasn’t open early and I’d heard that when there was heavy snow, they didn’t always open. I’d also most likely not be able to skate with any speed because it was a public rink with free admission and likely to be crowded. In the end, the indoor rink would be the only viable option if I wanted to skate.

By Friday, the high temperature had dropped to 50°F, and freezing temperatures were projected by Saturday night. I called the rink and found out that there was indeed ‘free skate’ early in the morning. The only issue that I’d have would be coordinating with the girls to get to campus, though even if I had to come back to the house to get them, it wasn’t really that much of an issue.

The week had been fairly calm, and I’d had my usual Thursday afternoon with Anala, though we’d spent nearly as much time talking as we had exploring the heights of passion and pleasure. In a sense, things were cooling down a bit from what we’d once described as a honeymoon. It wasn’t that there was less pleasure, or less passion, but the driving urge to have sex had faded just a bit. We saw that as a natural and appropriate progression.

The most important thing I needed to do on Friday was call Karin. I waited until I thought she’d be home from school, and then dialed her number. Calling on a weekday morning was very expensive compared to Sunday morning, but there was no way I was going to miss talking to her on her birthday.

“«Grattis på födelsedagen»!” I said as soon as she answered the phone. (“Happy birthday!”)

“Thanks, Steve! The card and gifts arrived on Monday. Should I open them now?”

“Sure!” I said.

I heard the tearing of an envelope and the rustling of paper through the phone.

“Thank you!” she exclaimed into the phone.

“I hope it fits,” I said. “I’m pretty sure I remember your size.”

“I’ll model it for you in February!” she promised.

We talked for a few more minutes and I wished her ‘happy birthday’ once more and then we hung up because I had to get to class.

When I arrived home on Friday evening, I showered, dressed and headed to the pizzeria to meet Connie and her friends. They were waiting for me and after I sat down at the table, I got the distinct impression that the others were two couples, which made me wonder if I was there as Connie’s date, without having been told that I was. Of course, I could be reading way too much into it, because all she’d done was invite me to dinner with her and her friends.

All five of them, including Connie, were Freshmen at Purdue. They were from all over the country - Connie from Loveland, Ohio, of course, and her friends from Maine, New York, New Mexico, and Oregon. Connie was studying accounting as she’d said when I saw her the day I’d had my fight with Joyce, and her friends were all either studying accounting or business. All of them were having a good time at school and had wanted to see Chicago.

“What are you guys doing tomorrow and Sunday?” I asked.

“Tomorrow we’re going to the Sears Tower, and then checking out the shops on Michigan Avenue,” Connie answered. “On Sunday we’re going to the Shedd Aquarium and the Adler Planetarium.”

The waitress came to take our order and was back with our salads a few minutes later. The Chicago-style pizza would take close to an hour to make, as it was a busy Friday night. We talked while we ate our salads and I ended up talking a lot about my house, my roommates, and my job.

“How are things with Stephie?” Connie asked. “I didn’t hear you mention her at all.”

“We broke up at the end of the summer. It was totally friendly and she’s still living at the house, just not staying in my room.”

Connie got a huge smile on her face.

“So you’re available?”

Memories of Jennifer asking that question in High School popped into my head. I was available, after a fashion. The question was, was I available for Connie. She had turned into a sweet, mature young woman and she’d completely abandoned the attitude that she’d had that had so turned me off. It also depended on what her definition of the ‘serious fun’ that she had offered was. I had an idea what she had meant by that, but I never assumed.

“I guess it depends on what you mean by that, Connie. My life is more than a little complicated at this point.”

“Just some fun, Steve, like I said at my house. Maybe when my friends go to the movies after dinner you can show me your house. I’d really like to see it. I can always meet up with them after the movie for ice cream like they’re planning.”

It seemed that Connie had really changed. There wasn’t even a hint of her previous personality and she didn’t change her tone or expression to indicate that anything she said was a double entendre. Either this was her new personality, or she ought to move to Hollywood so she could win an Oscar for the performance. All things considered, it seemed authentic to me.

“Sure. I can bring you back to meet them for ice cream. I’d guess that would be around 11:00pm, since they’ll make an 8:00pm or 8:30pm showing.”

“Cool. Thanks, Steve. I’m really curious to see your house and maybe meet some of your friends.”

We chatted as a group until the pizza came and everyone dug in. As I’d found to be the case almost every time someone discovered Chicago-style pizza, they all loved it and wondered why the thin stuff held sway at home. It didn’t take long at all for the six of us to devour the large, deep dish pepperoni pizza. When the busboy cleared away the dishes and pan, all that remained were a few crumbs. Everyone chipped in an equal share to cover the check and tip, and Connie and I headed to my car while her four friends headed off to the movies.

We arrived at the house in Hyde Park about twenty minutes later and Connie was impressed even before we stepped inside. Inside, she was positively blown away. Only Elyse and Eduardo were there, sitting in the great room watching a movie that they’d rented at the video store. I introduced Connie and finished giving her a tour of the house, which ended in the basement.

“What would you like to do for the next couple of hours,” I asked Connie.

My question for her was a test as much as it was a question of what she felt like doing.

“We could play pool. I’ve played some at Grandfather’s house.”

“Sounds good. Can I get you a Coke or tea or something?”

“A Sprite or 7-Up if you have it.”

I went over to the fridge by the bar and got a Sprite and Dr Pepper, opened the bottles, threw away the caps, and handed her the green bottle while I kept the clear one for myself. I set the bottle down, removed the cover from the pool table then racked the balls. I let Connie break and when she failed to sink a ball, I pocketed the purple ‘4’ and set about running 3 more solid balls into pockets before missing and making it Connie’s turn.

“Uhm, I think I’m in real trouble! You just sank four solids already!”

“My parents have a table and I played a LOT from the time I was about ten. I haven’t practiced as much since I got graduated from High School, but I make sure I play some.”

She sank one ball before missing and I sank one of my remaining balls but didn’t have a clear shot at the Yellow ‘1’ or Blue ‘2’. I simply shot to set up my next turn. Connie missed and then I sank both remaining solid balls, then called the ‘8’ in the side pocket and sank it smoothly.

“Damn,” she said. “I’m not sure we should bother playing again!”

“I’d apologize,” I replied with a grin, “but I like to win far too much to do that!”

“Me too. But it’s certainly not going to be at pool! Do you guys have another TV?”

“No, just that one in the great room where Elyse and Eduardo are. We really don’t watch a lot of TV. We have cable, but for the most part, we do other stuff. I can’t remember the last time I sat down and watched anything on cable except the news or occasionally MTV. If I do watch something, it’s usually a rented movie, though now I have HBO, and they’re starting to show some stuff I want to watch.”

“Hmm. What about using the sauna? I haven’t been in one before.”

This was not the time to play games or tease, and it certainly wasn’t the time to sit naked in there with Connie. I’d just apply the weekend rule a few hours early.

“We could. There are towels and robes. Just take a towel and robe to the bathroom over there, wrap the towel around you and put the robe on and meet me back here. I’ll do the same upstairs in my room. You can also wrap a towel around your hair if you want.”

I adjusted the controls, grabbed a towel and a robe and headed upstairs. I stopped in by Elyse and Eduardo and let Elyse know that we’d be in the sauna, but that the weekend rules were in place because I was with my friend Joyce’s little sister and I wasn’t involved with her in any way. Elyse said she’d let anyone who came home before Connie and I got out of the sauna know what the deal was. I went up to my room and quickly undressed and wrapped the towel around my waist and put on the robe, then went back to the basement.

Connie and I went into the sauna and the stones were warm enough to add water right away. As the steam billowed up, we sat down on the bench. Once again, I was pleased to see that Connie was behaving very maturely, sitting a discreet distance from me, but not so far as to seem standoffish.

“This is pretty neat. How hot does it get?” she asked.

“It depends. I like lots of steam, so not much hotter than 130°F. If I used less steam, I could take it up to about 175°F. I’ve read about some that get even hotter, but that strikes me as dangerous.”

“What’s with the bathtub?”

“It’s a whirlpool, you know, a Jacuzzi. You fill it up with water then turn on the water jets to make the water swirl. It’s pretty relaxing but obviously we don’t have bathing suits.”

“I guess it makes sense to wear a suit because the towel wouldn’t work. Or do you go in there naked sometimes?”

“Sometimes. Just like sometimes I’m in here just sitting on a towel instead of having it wrapped around me. It kind of depends on who’s in here. Some of my friends and roommates would be super uncomfortable in that situation.”

“I can imagine. It’d be one thing right now, but not with like six or eight other people in here!”

“Exactly. That’s why I have a rule on the weekends that anyone who is in here has to have a towel like we do or wear a suit. Otherwise, it’s up to whoever is in here.”

“Did your parents have a sauna?”

“No. My friend Melanie’s parents did, and the family I lived with in Sweden did. When my dad and I bought the house, I decided I wanted a sauna so we had this installed.”

“Very cool. I’m impressed. I know Grandfather thought you would be very successful but this is beyond anything I could imagine. You aren’t even twenty-one yet! My sister is an idiot for doing whatever it was that pissed you off!”

I shrugged, “Things happen. Joyce and I haven’t dated in quite some time, so we’re just friends. I’m not sure if she said anything to you or not, but she basically hurt a friend of mine and I was upset. I kind of flew off the handle, but Joyce and I made up and now we’re friends again.”

“I heard my parents say that Grandfather really took her to task for upsetting you and some girl.”

I nodded, “Yes, but he also took me to task for not following his instructions.”

“That will get you in serious trouble, Steve!”

“No kidding. Speaking of your grandfather, what happened with the Italian guy you were dating?”

“He’s in Cincinnati. We were never super serious, we just liked to go out and have fun together. I might be interested after college, but for now I just want to be free to do whatever I feel like without answering to anyone.”

I laughed, “Good luck with that! We all answer to someone in some way. You still have to follow the school rules and because I’m sure Don Joseph is paying your tuition, you have to listen to him, too.”

“Yeah, yeah. But it’s nice to FEEL like I’m free!” she said with a soft laugh.

After about twenty-five minutes we got up and I explained about taking a cool shower and Connie headed to the bathroom in the basement. I went up to my room and quickly showered and then met her in the kitchen. We each got another soft drink, and I checked the clock.

“We have about an hour. We could listen to music, play some pool, or just hang out and talk,” I said.

“Music!” Connie said.

She followed me to the Indian room where I put on a ‘Top 40’ station and we lounged on pillows on the floor to listen to the music and chat. I continued to be amazed that Connie had not made a single move, had not flirted and had not even made a single joke about sex. I suppressed a chuckle because the way my mind worked, that was reason enough at this point to not turn her down if she asked!

By 10:30pm, when it was time to take her to meet her friends, I’d concluded that Connie Abbadelli was a charming, beautiful, sexy, intelligent young woman. If I met her in class, I’d certainly strike up a conversation and would not be opposed to getting together with her. We put on our jackets and headed out to my car.

June 15, 1994, Chicago, Illinois “That’s everything, I think,” I said. “My luggage is in the trunk of the car, I have my passport, tickets, and money, both dollars and yen. I can’t think of anything else.” “I’ll see you in five weeks,” Elyse said, giving me a quick hug. “Did you see they rioted in Vancouver last night because they lost the Stanley Cup?” I chuckled, “Only Canadians would riot when they LOSE the Cup! I did see that on the front page of the Trib. Are we ready?” “Michelle and...

Pizza

It was Saturday, alone. There was nothing going on but the sickening sight of Big brother torturing 8 house mates over a glass of water or so it seemed. This intellectual exercise was going way over my head and I was in desperate need of something a little more down to earth. But what is more down to earth than a pizza and a porno flick? Ah, yes! But what... but what do I want on the pizza? Pineapple? Mushroom? Sweetcorn? HA! HA! I'll get all three - Pineapple! Mushroom! & Sweetcorn! Better...

A WellLived Life Book 6 Kara IChapter 5 Housemates

August 1981, Chicago, Illinois On Sunday morning, I made my usual call to Karin. I described everything in the apartment and all the things I’d done during the week, including the reception. Both of us would start school in a week and we were both looking forward to it. When we finished talking, I went out for my run, showered, and ate breakfast. I made some tea, started a load of laundry, and then turned on the stereo. I put on an REO Speedwagon album and then relaxed on the couch with the...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 3 JessicaChapter 63 Back to Work

August 21, 1989, Chicago, Illinois “Unbelievable,” I said when I read the headline from the Chicago Tribune. “It says here that Solidarity activist Tadeusz Mazowiecki was nominated to be Prime Minister of Poland.” I hadn’t had a chance to read the paper on Sunday because it hadn’t been delivered before we left for the race track in Michigan. “So now what?” Kara asked. “We’re in totally uncharted territory. Your guess is as good as anyone’s right about now.” “Steve, do you have a minute?”...

A WellLived Life Book 8 StephieChapter 36 My Lifes Journey

July, 1983, Chicago, Illinois I woke up early on the First of July, because my body clock was still set to Swedish time. The flight back had been long but uneventful, and I was happy that the businessman in the seat next to me hadn’t wanted to talk. I read, wrote some longhand journal entries, ate, and generally relaxed while the plane zipped over the Atlantic. I’d come home, taken a sauna, eaten a light meal, and gone straight to bed, not bothering to check messages, look at the mail that...

A WellLived Life Book 1 BirgitChapter 4 Calm Before the Storm

June 1977 When I got home, I grabbed a Coke and some chips and went right to my room. I didn’t think I could deal with my parents or Jeff or Stephanie. I just needed to be by myself. That wouldn’t seem odd to anyone, because I often went to my room to read. In addition, I now had the TV I’d received for my birthday. I flipped it on to WXIX Channel 19 and reruns of Gilligan’s Island and Green Acres played in the background while I read. I had to get my mind clear for the final exams that...

July, 1983, Chicago, Illinois After Rosie left, I stripped the sheets from my bed, as well as the cover of the duvet, and tossed everything into the washing machine. I lit a lavender candle in the room, and then swept and dusted. I did a quick spot-check of the rest of the house and noticed that the tub in the sauna needed to be cleaned. I scrubbed it, then mopped the sauna floor with a damp sponge mop. I finished cleaning the sauna about the time the washing machine finished, so I moved...

June 1977 Friday ended up being a non-event. The more I thought about it, the more I was sure that there was no way on this earth I could say what happened between Birgit and me was a sin. Calling it a sin would debase it into a meaningless act. I could never do that. And the more I thought about Jennie McGrath, the more sure I was that I couldn’t call what she did for me a sin, either. If the church was right, I was going to hell. Sunday, April 24, 2005 (Continued) We trouped into the pizzeria, picked an area, and pushed some tables together so we could be one big group. Julia had chosen this place not only because it was near the bowling alley, but because it was LARGE and informal. It was the sort of place that allowed you to do things like push tables around and make lots of noise. They served pizzas on plastic plates; that's the sort of place it was. March, 1982, Milford, Ohio As I drove along I-65, I thought about what Stephanie had asked for and what Bethany had said without even knowing about the request. Of course, because Bethany and I were so in tune, she might have actually had an idea that I was struggling with getting involved with my sister again. I kept turning it over and over in my mind and I kept coming to the same conclusion — that I shouldn’t do it. I was torn between doing what Stephanie wanted and doing what Kara and...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 6 SamanthaChapter 21 Georg and Maria

September 7, 1992, Chicago, Illinois “That went reasonably well,” Michelle said when her parents drove off. “There were a few times I thought my expression would give away something I shouldn’t. You were messing with me, weren’t you?” She grabbed both my hands and smiled, “I was telling the truth, in my own way. Thank you!” She leaned forward and kissed my cheek. “So, what’s left?” I asked. “To visit UofC tomorrow and formally withdraw from classes. To spend some time with you and your...

A WellLived Life Book 6 Kara IChapter 14 A Southern Belle a Surprise Proposal two Cheerleaders an Old Flame and a Girl Back Home Part I

October 1981, Chicago, Illinois I arrived back at the apartment just before 10:00pm and saw the address for the party. I decided I wasn’t particularly interested in going so I put on some music, poured myself a glass of wine, and started reading more about Russia. I was alternating between the history and culture book and the Communist Party book, decided on the history and culture book for this time. I didn’t get much reading done because I was thinking about Tatyana, which led me to...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 9 KamiChapter 38 And Sometimes It Stinks To Be Big

January 23, 1996, Chicago, Illinois “Father, bless!” I said, greeting Father Basil with upturned palms. “Bless you, Stephen,” he said as I kissed his hand. The waiter showed us to a quiet table along the wall of Roditys in Greektown. He took our drink orders and was back quickly. We placed our food orders right away and he left to put them in with the kitchen. “I’m not quite sure how to address this, so I’m just going to ask you bluntly. Are you the father of Michelle’s baby?” I shook my...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 8 NIKAChapter 68 The Rules

June 29, 1995, Chicago, Illinois On Thursday, I finally had lunch with Melissa again, something I hadn’t been looking forward to. Much like with Cèlia, Melissa and I had passed an inflection point and I was left with sub-optimal paths forward. I’d been struggling with the possible solutions, and all of them had pitfalls. When I walked into Takumi, I had something of a plan. Whether it was good or not would only be known once everything played out. “I spoke to my wives,” I said after we’d...

A WellLived Life 3 Book 1 SuzanneChapter 73 Hypothetical Questions

December 5, 2000, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota “I had a good time last night,” I said. “I was surprised you invited a friend!” Mary laughed as we walked into the exam room, “Naomi had a good time as well. You know what a Resident’s life is like.” I nodded, “No social life.” “Exactly. You guys seemed to hit it off pretty well.” “Yes, but I’m not here for that!” “You’re everywhere for that, and you know it!” I couldn’t help but laugh. “Let’s just say that you hit the sweet spot -...

A WellLived Life Book 3 PiaChapter 25 The Puzzle and the Cat Part II

March 1980, Hovås/Göteborg, Sweden I woke early as usual, but just enjoyed being in bed with Katt. When she woke, she hopped out of bed and pulled a robe out of her closet and handed it to me. “There’s a spare toothbrush in the bathroom. Go have your shower, then we’ll have breakfast after I have my shower.” I quickly showered and brushed my teeth, and went back to Katt’s room. She went to shower and came back a few minutes later. She dressed, and I got a very good look at her sexy body...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 10 BridgetChapter 74 A Whimper Not A Bang

April 5, 1997, Chicago, Illinois “You missed cuddles this morning!” Birgit said accusingly when I walked into the house about 9:30am. “I know, Pumpkin, but I had a work emergency and had to go see Aunt Joyce and Grandpa A.” “And now we have to get ready for karate!” “I know. We’ll have some family time this afternoon. I don’t have any plans.” “Good!” I hugged her and the rest of the kids, then went to find Kara. We hugged and kissed, and went straight upstairs to get ready for...

September 3, 1989, Chicago, Illinois “Good morning, Sensei,” I said, bowing to Sensei Jim. “Good morning!” he said waving me to a chair in his office. “How was your trip?” I asked. “Enlightening. I spent most of my time acting as a manservant to Sensei Robert and Sensei Hiro.” “He who will lead, must first serve,” I said. “Someday, I’m going to send you to Sensei Hiro, should he live long enough. You understand.” “Does that mean you are now 6th Dan?” I...

October 29, 2000, Chicago, Illinois Birgit followed me as far as the stairs, then scooted upstairs when I went to the front door and opened it. “Hi!” Sophie said. “Hi!” I replied and held the door open so she could come into the house. I closed the door behind her then led her to my study where I waited until she went in, and then walked in, closing the door behind me. I nodded to one of the wingback chairs, she sat down in one, and I sat down in the other. “Is something wrong?” she...

A WellLived Life Book 8 StephieChapter 61 Anala Part II

August, 1983, Chicago, Illinois I walked in the near 90°F heat to Carla’s place. I was grateful that the humidity of the morning had dropped significantly; otherwise the heat would have been unbearable. By the time I walked up the steps to the apartment over the photography studio and knocked on her door, I had broken into a light sweat. Carla answered almost immediately and invited me inside her studio apartment. The air was moderately cool, and the window air conditioner was running full...

A WellLived Life Book 7 Kara IIChapter 21 He Will Tell Thee What Thou Shalt Do

July 1982, Milford, Ohio On Tuesday morning, I kissed Kara goodbye and headed to my parents’ house for my usual morning routine with my little sister. She was happy that I could spend the morning with her and asked to take a walk, so we weren’t in the house with my mom. “Let me guess — this walk will end in the clearing,” I said with a smile. “Yes,” she said, taking my hand as we walked down Overlook towards Klondyke. As usual, we turned around and walked back, taking the path to the...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 7 SakurakoChapter 37 Geisha

March 13, 1994, Chicago, Illinois “Hi, Steve!” Ailea said when she opened the door. “Hi,” I replied, accepting the offered hug. There was no touching of lips, just of cheeks, and I wondered if I’d misread her intentions at her birthday lunch, or if, perhaps, she detected my reluctance to return the offered affection. “Lunch is ready, so go ahead and sit. I’ll bring it in from the kitchen.” I went to the low table, sat down, and a minute later, Ailea brought miso soup and sushi, our usual...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 10 BridgetChapter 72 An Explosive Discovery

April 3, 1997, Dallas, Texas “Remember what I said about drinking too much,” I said, as I poured bourbon into three cups. We’d stopped at a liquor store, bought a bottle of Blanton’s, and then returned to the small suite I’d reserved at the Westin. Deborah’s room was down the hall, and Krissy’s was two floors below. Krissy’s comment had caught me a bit off guard, but I hadn’t reacted visibly. I didn’t know her quite well enough to know if she’d been teasing with Deborah, so I was being...

March 28, 1991, Chicago, Illinois “This day belongs to you, Kara!” I said when the three of us woke on Thursday morning. “Happy birthday!” Jessica said. “Thanks,” Kara replied happily. “I think I’d like an amazing birthday fuck from our husband, and then a nice loving shower with my wife!” Kara said. “Do we have enough time?” I asked. Jessica giggled, “I set the alarm for thirty minutes earlier!” “Then let’s not waste any of it!” I said pulling Kara to me. Kara’s squeals as I plunged...

September 1, 1987, Chicago, Illinois “I heard that you have some kind of plan to help Ed,” I said to Connie. “There’s no plan,” she replied. “A witness who saw the shopkeeper alive after Ed left came forward.” That sounded convenient, and I wondered if the witness was real or someone that Anthony had put forward to solve the problem. Certainly, the videotape was real, because I couldn’t imagine how Anthony could have faked that, but the witness? Who knew? “So is he being released? Or is...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 10 BridgetChapter 100 A Full Circle

August 17, 1997, Chicago, Illinois We finished lunch and Marissa and the younger kids went to play, but Natalie sat with the adults to talk, with coffee, tea, or soft drinks. The Sarcus were very comfortable, but the Heaths were still struggling. But, vitally, they hadn’t left and hadn’t insisted Natalie leave the group. “Can you explain how you developed this attitude and approach?” Chris asked. I nodded, “It started when I was just a bit younger than Natalie. My mom was a total control...

A WellLived Life Book 3 PiaChapter 6 A Tale of Three Cities Part III

July 1979 — Falkenberg, Sweden On Friday, when I got back from my run, Pam was in her bra and panties again. I whistled at her, she giggled, then finished dressing. I showered, and we went to breakfast and finished up our last day. Once class was done, we were pretty much free. On Saturday, we’d have several optional activities and then on Sunday we’d head back to our host families. After dinner on Friday, I took Pam’s hand and we walked towards the river. It was quiet and peaceful, and...

July 1980, Over the North Atlantic We reached cruising altitude, and I settled back to read my book. Pam raised the armrest between us, snuggled close to me and read as well. The cabin crew offered drinks, and I had my first Coke in a year! Meal service began about an hour and a half into the flight. After the cabin crew picked up the trays and offered drinks again, they passed once more, offering headsets for the movie. Trevor and Maria took them, but Pam and I didn’t, instead we turned on...

July 8, 1997, Chicago, Illinois “Is it really that surprising?” Leah asked. “I suppose not,” I replied. “I just didn’t read too much into the kiss on the cheek.” “I didn’t think it was a good idea to kiss you on the lips with all those people around, because I had no idea who they were or what they would think. You were VERY careful with our dance, so I kind of followed your lead.” Which showed very mature thinking on her part. Both of these girls were exactly the kind of students I...

November 8, 1993, Chicago, Illinois A dark fog swirled before my eyes as I tried to take stock. My head hurt, badly. I felt something on my face and realized, dimly, it was an oxygen mask. My right hand was uncomfortable and I recognized the feeling of an IV and pulse-oximeter. My left arm ached fiercely. On my chest I felt the pads and wires of an EKG. I didn’t feel anything else wrong as I continued taking inventory. I tried to open my eyes, but the fog didn’t clear. I tried to speak, but...

August, 1983, Chicago, Illinois In the morning Anala and I ran as we had the previous time, then showered together, carefully washing each other’s bodies in an intimate but non-sexual way. After our shower we went to the kitchen and I made breakfast and we sat down to eat. “Steve, may I make a suggestion?” she asked. “Sure.” “Broaden your circle of friends. Other than me, all of you are white, nominally Christian, 20-year-old Americans. And you don’t invite me to your Sunday...

March 1979 Monday was back to the normal routine of school. He did, and I sat in the usual chair across from him. “She has a real problem, you know that, right?” he asked. “I do. May 1979 The limo dropped me at home about 9:00pm. I took my stuff to my room, stripped, and hung up the tux. The rest of the things went into the hamper. I took a shower, put on shorts and a t-shirt, and walked down the hall into my dad’s office. I saw no reason to put this off any longer. “Stephen, you need to explain yourself!” my mom demanded. “I was in Mrs. McGrath’s, well, Mrs. Sanders’ now, wedding, as I said.” “You walked her down the aisle! Pizza

This is another true story told to me by a friend of mine. I had lost my job several years ago and without income I soon lost my house and cars. My wife wanted more so she left me and took the k**s and the dog. I was able to get a job delivering pizza. It was a big change for me to go from being an important VP making six figures to a pizza delivery guy making ten bucks an hour plus tips. It was to be my last delivery of the night and then I could go home to my pathetic garage apartment....
