Within eighteen hours of the President of the United States speaking with the Prime Minister of Israel, Emily Fredette had been apprehended by agents of the Mossad. Three hours after that all members of the Sororibus had been instructed by the Matriarch to do whatever was necessary to recall the feminine hygiene products tainted with the nanobots.
Cile and her team had stormed the Biohybrid lab Sunday evening. The documentation on the project was easily located just where Bianca had told them it would be. Bianca Clary might have been instrumental in developing and planning for what would have been the world’s worst terrorist event, but she did keep meticulous records.
By early Monday morning, federal agents were raiding four additional labs in the United States that were being used to produce the nanobots, and six paper processing plants where the application of the nanotechnology was being conducted, The Royal Canadian Mounted Police didn’t have any labs to raid, but they did have three paper processing plants involved, that they too shut down. Their counterparts around the globe were likewise closing any paper processing plants until it could be verified that the paper from the plants was clean of the nanobots.
“Do we know if any of the products made it onto any store shelves?” Katie asked.
While she still didn’t want to know anything about the gunman himself, Bobby and Tyler both thought that Katie should know about the plans that the Sororibus had formulated, and how this had been the motivation for the gunman’s actions that day. The man had gone to the mall that day expecting to die, so Katie had nothing to feel remorseful about.
“According to the records that Bianca Clary kept,” Jason said, “all the paper produced so far has been sent to only one manufacturer of feminine hygiene products. Items wrapped in that paper have been shipped to five distributors around the world. Each has been contacted and confirmed that no inventory received within the last two months has been sold by them. They all had an existing inventory of the products that they were selling off first.”
“We can’t trust the lot numbers as an indicator of which items might be tainted,” JR said. “Everything in those five distribution centers will need to be destroyed unless we come up with a way to test for the presence of the nanobots.”
“We don’t need to test for the nanobots,” said Katie. “We can test for the targeting proteins. If they are present on the paper, then we can assume the nanobots are present too.”
“I knew there was a reason that I claimed you as my kid sister,” JR teased. “That’s an excellent idea. Ordinary urine test strips will detect the proteins.”
“Are you sure?” asked Bobby?”
“It’s easy enough to verify,” Katie said. “Have someone at one of the paper processing plants run to the nearest drug store and pick up a pack of universal urine test strips. A portion of the suspect paper may need to be moistened for the test strip to get a reading from it, but if there are any proteins there, the strip should indicate them.”
“I’m on it,” Jason said, picking up his cellphone to make a call.
They had their answer within ten minutes. One of the federal agents at the paper processing plant Jason had called was carrying Chemstrip brand urine test strips to monitor his Type 2 diabetes, so he was able to test the paper there immediately. The blue-green pad on the strip lit up almost instantly after touching the treated paper, indicating the presence of protein.
“Have the same test run at the other locations,” Bobby instructed. “Make sure they run the same test on some untainted paper as well. I don’t want to give the President or the Israelis false hope of being able to detect the tainted items.”
When Jason picked up his cellphone again, Katie spoke to her dad, “Do you need Tyler and me over the next few hours? We drive back to California tomorrow, so I wanted to show him around a bit.”
“That’s fine, just keep your cellphones on in case anything comes up that I want to ask one of you about.”
Tyler rose from his chair as Katie leaned over and kissed her father on his cheek. She met Tyler at the door, which he held open for her to exit first.
“Quite the interesting weekend,” Tyler said while allowing Katie to take his hand and lead the way.
“I would like to tell you that this is a rarity here, but it isn’t,” Katie said. “I can’t tell you how many times growing up, the family had to put something on hold so that my dad, Uncle Jason or both could deal with a critical event like this.”
Katie led them to the stairway for the garage access, “I want to show you at least three places before we leave.”
“Which are?” Tyler asked.
“We’ll go by Rick’s first,” Katie told him as they reached the SSR. “You drive.”
Tyler nodded and then walked with Katie around to open the door for her. He then returned to the driver’s side and got in beside her.
“Rick’s is open twenty-four hours a day, but it’s early, so there won’t be much going on. All I really want to show you there anyway is my Corvette, and let you drive it if you want to.”
“I’m looking forward to finally seeing your car, but I think that today, I would prefer to sit beside you and watch you drive it. That’s an image I have had in my mind for weeks; the Angel behind the wheel of that car.”
Katie laughed and said, “I can do that for you. Turn right when you get to the corner.”
Tyler followed Katie’s directions and asked, “What else after Rick’s?”
“Downtown San Antonio. You need to see the Alamo and the Riverwalk, or no one will believe that you’ve ever been here.”
“Mandatory tourist events,” Tyler said with a laugh. “Got it. Then what?”
“I’ll show you the legendary ‘Ghost Tracks’ of San Antonio.”
“Ghost tracks?” Tyler asked. “Do I want to see them?”
Katie pulled a heavy blanket from behind her seat and showed it to Tyler before putting it back.
“I think you’ll want to see us making love at this secluded little spot I know of right by the Ghost tracks.”
“Yes,” Tyler chuckled, “that I would definitely like to see.
“Why were you so adamant about which side of the picnic blanket was up versus down?” Tyler asked as he carried it into the laundry room at the house.
Katie laughed as she prepared the washer for the load, “Anyone who has grown up around here will tell you, if you want to have a picnic, or do something else on the ground,” she winked, “your blanket had better be heavily treated on one side with a pesticide containing DEET. You put that side down. It keeps the fire ants and chiggers away.”
“Ahh,” said Tyler with a chuckle. “I’m glad my first romp in the wilderness was with someone in the know about such things.”
Katie started the washer and then turned to kiss Tyler, “I’m glad your first time was with such a person too. Come on, since JR and Rockie have moved to their trailer, I want to show you my room.”
Tyler accompanied Katie as she climbed the stairs, “Where are your parents?”
“I haven’t a clue. Maybe at Jason and Franc’s place, maybe at Rick’s, maybe just out to dinner. I told them that we would fend for ourselves tonight. Is leftover tuna casserole okay with you?”
“Sure.”
“Well, here are,” Katie said as she opened the door to a room. “This is the place where all of my dreams originated.”
Tyler let Katie enter first and then followed. The bedroom was approximately fifteen feet by twenty feet. It didn’t have a gender-specific theme to its style of décor, but Tyler could see touches of Katie in many areas. There was a queen-size bed with an oak headboard, matching side tables, an oak dresser with a mirror atop it, a large student desk under the window, a bookcase that contained mostly framed photos and several trophies, a leather recliner and an oak armoire.
Tyler walked to the large window over the student desk, opened the blinds and looked out. The view was to the north and he could easily see the skyline of San Antonio in the distance to the northwest. There was another, smaller skyline visible to the northeast.
“What town is that?” he asked.
Katie looked where Tyler was pointing and said, “That’s Seguin. It’s a pretty little town along the banks of the Guadalupe River. We need to go there sometime. Having a house along the Guadalupe River is one of my dreams.”
Tyler closed the blinds and looked around the room again.
“All your dreams originated her, huh? How many of them came true here?”
“Not many,” Katie admitted. “Some of my wildest fantasies also originated here, if you’re interested.”
“How many of your fantasies were fulfilled here?”
“Up until now, none.”
“Is there anything I can do to remedy that?” Tyler asked as he sat on the edge of the bed.
Katie sat beside him and said, “Maybe you can make a dream or two come true here first, then we can move on to my fantasies.”
“I’ll always do my best to make all your dreams come true.”
“As I will for you. Did you talk to my dad about what options might be available to you if you resigned from your job?”
“Yeah, we had some downtime while waiting for the interrogations to begin, so he and JR heard me out and provided some good suggestions. Did you have your talk with your mom?”
“Yes, and she made one particular suggestion that I want your opinion on.”
“What’s that?” Tyler asked.
“You heard Rockie mention at dinner the other night that JR was considering taking over the practice of a local veterinarian?”
“I remember.”
“What would you think of me going in with JR and partnering with him in our own veterinary practice?”
“Would that make you happy?” Tyler asked.
“It would be a path to happiness for me,” Katie said. “First, it would allow me to do something I love and I’m good at, but more importantly, it would allow me to do it while still being the wife and mother that I told you was my dream job.”
“Then I think you should do it. No question about it.”
“There’s one very important question,” Katie said. “Do any of the options that you discussed with my dad and JR provide you with something that you would be happy with if we moved here?”
“A couple of them do,” Tyler said. “Your dad is confident that I would be welcomed at any number of federal law enforcement agencies, but maintaining a permanent assignment here could be a challenge. Going to work for Brandt Consulting is another option, but according to your dad, considerable travel would be required if I was based here. I could simply retire and live off my investments. You know that we could do that easily. But the option I am leaning towards is applying to join the Public Corruption Unit of the Texas Rangers.”
“Do you know if they have any openings? I heard that the state legislature sets a limit on the number of Texas Rangers, so if they are at the maximum number, there wouldn’t be a spot for you.”
“JR mentioned that too. Your dad is confident that with my background, they will find a spot for me; even if the legislature has to meet in special session to approve an increase in the number of Rangers.”
“Tyler, should we do this? Forget everything we had planned for our careers up to this point and go for our dreams instead?”
Tyler pulled Katie into an embrace and said, “I’m ready if you are. What’s your next dream that we need to work on?”
“I always dreamed of a handsome boy making passionate love to me in this bed. He would be my one true love, and his kiss would change my life forever.”
“I don’t know if I can pull off the handsome boy part, but this future Texas Ranger would be honored to be your one true love.”
“Maybe it’s the appetite in me that you created, but I’m beginning to think that this tuna casserole is better reheated than fresh.”
Katie giggled and said, “Maybe it’s a little of both?”
“I know that it’s hard to be specific at this point,” Tyler said, “but we should try to put some target timeline together. Things like when I should give notice of my resignation, when you would be able to join with JR in the practice, those sorts of things.”
“You’re right. I would like to remain in California through the end of the year because my family has traditionally spent the Christmas holiday there so our grandparents could participate.”
“That’s only a few months away, so I don’t see any problem with that,” Tyler said.
“Here’s an idea. How about if we invite your parents and Taylor to join us here for Thanksgiving? Our families could meet each other and you and I could start looking for where we wanted to live.”
“That is a good idea, but the only choice as to where we want to live will involve finding a spot along the Guadalupe river for your dream home.”
“You’re the best!” Katie said. “Do you think your parents will be okay with spending Thanksgiving here? I can rent a plane so they won’t have to drive or anything. Or, my dad may want to use his plane to fly out and get us all.”
“I’m sure that I can talk them into coming here, and if needed, I’ll get Taylor to do it.”
“On another subject, are you okay with getting married here at the house?” Katie asked.
“Once again, I’ll defer to your judgment on that. I have no idea about what the weather is like here at the beginning of June, or what would be needed to arrange everything. I’ll focus on planning the honeymoon.”
“What do you have in mind there?” Katie asked.
“I’m leaning towards one of my own dreams. I’ve always wanted to take a world cruise, and doing so with you would be ideal. What do you think?”
“Book it!” Katie exclaimed. “All those days at sea with nothing to do but make love to you? The perfect honeymoon!”
Tyler laughed, “Consider it done.”
Someone’s cellphone was ringing. Tyler checked his and answered.
“Hello?”
“Tyler, this is Jason. I just heard that the DNA results on Alfaro and his parents prove that they are not related. I thought that you would want to know.”
“Hang on a second, Jason. I want to put you on speaker so Katie can hear.”
Tyler hit the speaker icon on his screen and then set the phone on the table.
“Okay,” Tyler said, “the DNA results prove that Alfaro is not related to the couple that he claimed to be his parents. Have we found out if he was adopted by them?”
“Sorry,” Jason said, “I forgot to mention that. Our check with the Mexican authorities found no record of Alfaro being adopted. His birth parents are listed as Hector and Rosarita Nunez, and they are both alive and well. They live just outside of Culiacan. Hector is well known to the authorities as a high-ranking member of the Sinaloa cartel.”
“Now that’s interesting,” Tyler said. “It might explain some of the Alfaro’s positions on drug enforcement in California. His real father might be influencing him.”
“I was thinking the same thing,” said Jason. “I have asked some people I know at the DEA to look into it, but we’re not waiting on their response to move on Alfaro. The United States Attorney General will be speaking with the Governor of California in the morning. He will be informed that we have Alfaro dead-to-rights on immigration fraud, and then be offered the opportunity to deal with Alfaro himself, or to let the FBI and Immigration Enforcement do it. There will also be a few political incentives offered to the governor for him issuing a preemptive pardon to the unnamed mystery woman who shot the gunman at the Shoreline Mall. That will prevent whoever replaces Alfaro from also pursuing the search.”
