“ALL ABORRRRDDD!” Shouted the conductor, theatrically and somewhat needlessly. Everyone who was travelling had long ago made sure they were on the train. It wasn’t like there would be another past that day.
The engine complained, puffed and skidded the wheels; then gained a grip and they began to move out. At last they were moving away from the wild west towards the civilised east.
Or, as Jesse and her new friend Melissa agreed they were moving from fun towards boredom, from excitement to dull, dull, dull. The train continued east for two days and then stopped overnight once more. Here they were in a proper town, with proper shops and several hotels. The two groups found themselves at the same hotel looking for rooms and, to save looking for the extra room needed, it was agreed Melissa and Jesse could share.
The family were pleased that Marie and Cavendish at least seemed to know how to behave properly in a restaurant; Mary delayed just long enough to watch others, so she avoided the faux pas of picking up her soup plate to drain the last (which was common practice even in New Horizon). They talked of their hopes and dreams and plans.
“We hope to export raw materials to Europe, that is the plan of my company. I have been in California to make arrangements. Some will be shipped by sea, but I though we should explore the possibilities of rail as well.

By the end, the man was even more hopeful; he and Cavendish had all but agreed that Cavendish Young would be their business contact in London. It was clear Mr Young was very rich, so it was assumed he was a businessman of some skill and acumen; Cavendish never clarified his true experience. The man was also impressed that he was able to fight so ruthlessly, that must surely be a rarity in an Englishman. His telegraph east recommended meeting Mr Young in Boston and agreeing terms before he could be snapped up by some other enterprise.
The two younger sisters went to bed in their parents’ room, slightly put out that Melissa got to share with Jesse. Melissa and Jesse bade the adults goodnight, each kissing some on the cheek and shaking other’s hands.
“Cavendish, I have something to tell you and Mary, come with me” Marie led them on a quiet constitutional before retiring. “It appears that I, too, am with child.” The explanations to acquaintances had left the exact moment that she had been widowed deliberately very vague. It was wholly possible that if they continued to places they were not know then they could keep the parentage unclear.
“That’s wonderful!” Said Cavendish “Truly!
Should we marry? I am very willing”
“That is good news my dear sister” said Mary, they had taken on the personae of two sisters, and actually felt they were close enough for this to be true now.
“Thank you, thank you. And thank you for your kind offer Cavendish; but no, like my sister here, I shall bear this child as I am I think. We are all well-endowed enough – stop that, you know I refer to finance rather than physical attributes! - we are all well-enough provisioned not to need to put responsibilities on each other. “After I have visited my family, might we continue with you to Britain? It would be easier to be far from questions which would eventually elucidate unsavoury – for my mother and father – answers”
“Excellent! The band will stay together a little longer. Mary? Will you also come with us? I do hope so.”
“I have nothing to keep me in this country, sadly. But an adventure, beyond motherhood of course, will be most acceptable”
Up in the hotel room, Melissa found herself introduced to all manner of surprises and delights. Perhaps all the three – Marie, Cavendish, and Mary – realised this was at least possible, if not actually probably; the other family had no thought that their thirteen year old daughter might be introduced to activities that her mother would blanch to be asked to consider. She was a well-bred easterner, she had accompanied her husband (somewhat reluctantly) to the uncivilised west, and she was looking forward to returning to a land of flush toilets and refined conversation. Up in the room, her daughter was tasting what female juices tasted of having been persuaded to allow Jesse to lick her (to her infinite delight) as she returned the compliment.
