Genie's first effort was to follow up on the man who had hired Alvera. He turned out to be a soldier in the local gang. Genie put Alvera back on the streets, since he was too much of a small-timer to worry with. The soldier was picked up and interrogated. Komodo did the question asking, and there was almost no delay in getting answers. When we had all of the answers we needed, Genie simply vaporized the soldier. He was a murderer and rapists who could not be allowed back on the streets of any civilized city.
We now knew the name of the gang leader we wanted, and it was only a matter of minutes for Genie to find him. He was brought into the cell, and Komodo was turned loose on him. He didn't want to talk either, but Komodo's ball-squeezing technique was a quick persuader. While we were about it, we found out all that the gang boss had to tell us about every one of his operations. This information was later delivered to the Mexico City police. The gang boss was the type who was into torture, and he was the primary provider of his own entertainment, so Genie came up with a special treatment for him. He was returned to his office where he was burned to death by a ring of fire about a quarter-inch wide that slowly moved up his body, starting at his toes. Only the part of his body directly under the fire of the fire ring actually burned, so it took nearly an hour for him to die. We didn't watch, and his screams were canceled out, so we were not really bothered by the execution.
We moved quickly to rescue the kidnapped businessman, now that we knew where to find him. All of us showed up for the rescue, and the man was released to his family with the admonition not to be so predictable in his travel habits.
Word of the death of the gang leader quickly spread through the Mexico City underworld, along with how it was accomplished. We hoped that the news would serve to dampen the enthusiasm for kidnappings for a while. Unfortunately, we were wrong.
A lot of our time was spent in tracking down kidnappers. Time we begrudged, but time we had to spend. We were particularly hard on kidnappers of children. We always found the kidnappers, though not always while the kidnap victim was still alive. We never went easy on the kidnappers, but we were especially harsh with those who killed their victims. Furthermore, we made sure that potential kidnappers found out what happened to those that we caught. We hoped that this would discourage them, and I guess that it did, because the rate of kidnapping fell off significantly. At least, I hope that we had something to do with that!
Well, I wondered how long it was going to take. Mom developed a raging case of cabin fever! She felt that she just had to get out and about among some regular people. She said that she loved us all very much, but too long spent with us was boring, so she wanted to visit some place new all by herself. Naturally, we all tried to talk her out of that, but even Komodo was unable to get through to her. We saw that we were never going to persuade her to change her mind, so we finally said for her to go ahead.
Genie asked her where she wanted to go, Paris, Rome, London, New York City, what? We were all surprised when she said, "Sao Paolo." We could not resist asking why, and the answer was that she wanted to go somewhere she had not been to before. Specifically, she wanted to visit the beach. We got all of the data we could from him and promised to look into the matter.
Back at the Ranch, as we were now calling our hideaway, I asked Genie to process the information and see what he could come up with. Genie mulled over the data for three seconds and called us to a meeting. "The data suggest that the anarchists are planning to release the virus on Wednesday of next week. We have to stop them before then. Basically, we have two choices: one, I can simply reduce the whole pack of them to ashes, along with the vials of virus, or, two, the team can go in and inflict a little damage. I suggest the latter, so that a message can be sent to any other group planning a similar escapade."
I said, "I think that you are right—we should follow proposal number two. If you haven't done it already, please immediately render the virus impotent."
"Done. How do you want to do this?"
"I think that you should transport every one of the bastards to one place and drop us in on them. We can kill most of them, but let one escape to tell the world what happened to the rest. You flag the one who should escape so we don't accidentally kill him, and let us do the rest, unless we have to call for help."
"OK, I'll flag the one I think should escape with a big yellow arrow over his head that only you on the team can see. Do whatever you want with the rest. When do you want to go."
"I think that they should be fully aware of what is happening to them, so let's hit them during the daytime. We'll use only our bodies as weapons so that they will get the full impact of their sins. We can go anytime, just give us a few minutes warning so that we can be mentally and emotionally ready."
