January 1981, Milford, Ohio

On Monday, when I sat down beside Kara in chemistry class, she reached over and squeezed my hand.

“Kara, let’s have lunch, I need to tell you what happened on Saturday.”

“OK. I’ll meet you at the computer lab.”

I dropped my hand to her knee and squeezed as the bell rang and Kara smiled.

At lunch, I stopped to tell Bethany I’d be talking to Kara and then went to the computer lab. Kara arrived just about the same time I did. I unlocked the door, and we went inside. We set our lunches down on the table and embraced, kissing deeply. We broke the kiss and sat down to eat.

“My mom freaked out,” I said. “First, she demanded your phone number. When I refused, she said I was grounded. Then she tried to take my car keys, but I wouldn’t give her the keys to a car I own. When I refused, she told me to move out. Dad put his foot down and stopped her. It was pretty bad, but she doesn’t know your last name and my dad seems to have forgotten,” I said with a wan smile.

“Your dad seems pretty cool, all things considered. Your mom, on the other hand, is just plain nuts.”

“She is. I knew it was a bad idea to take you there. And yes, my dad is cool. He thinks you’re hot!”

“He said that?”

“Not that word, but without question, he thinks you’re a total fox. So do I.”

“Thanks,” she said, with a bit of a blush.

“We have to talk about us, too. There are some things I need to tell you.”

“OK,” she said nervously.

“First, I made a promise to someone for this Friday that I really need to keep.”

“What kind of promise?”

“I promised to grant a birthday wish for a former lover of mine’s little sister.”

“Are you talking about sex?”

“Yes. I promised to have sex with her on her birthday. It would only be one time. I made the promise before Friday night. You really surprised me, by the way.”

“I know. I had the opportunity, so I took it. I thought for a time you were going to say ‘no’. It was really touch and go for you, wasn’t it?”

“Yes,” I nodded. “I didn’t want you to regret it. It looks like I was worried for nothing.”

“No, you were right to worry. I almost backed out a couple of times. I was afraid. I’m not anymore. I love what we did together and I’m looking forward to Saturday. Susie told me that I should make sure you screwed my brains out!”

“You talked to Susie?”

“She and I talked a lot beforehand. She knows your reputation, Steve. So, on Saturday, I want you to screw my brains out! And I understand from Susie that there are other ways. We can talk on Saturday!” she giggled.

I chuckled, but came back to my question. “So, what do I tell the birthday girl?”

“Look, I know your reputation. I know of your struggles. I want to help you. I guess everything depends on where you want this to go.”

“I don’t know. I want to take it one day at a time. I can’t promise you anything other than that right now.”

Kara grabbed my hands and looked me in the eye.

“Do you love me, Steve?”

“Yes, I do.”

“And I love you, too. I fell in love with you back in October. But, and please listen to me carefully, when I planned to be with you on Friday, my only plan was for you to take my virginity. It didn’t work out the way I thought it would, but I’m really happy how it did turn out. So, because of what I had planned, and because I didn’t tell you in advance, I’m OK with you keeping your promise. One time, Steve Adams.”

“Are you sure?”

“I’m not sure about anything other than the fact that I’m in love with you and that I want you to make love to me on Saturday. Are you seeing anyone else, Steve? Sleeping with anyone else? Because if you are, you will need to stop.”

“No, I’m not. Just you. I will see my friend Joyce for dinner later this month and, of course, I’ll take my friend Elyse to the Sweetheart Dance.”

“Do you plan to have sex with them?”

“No, I don’t. I also plan to take Bethany to Prom, because you can’t go.”

“Same question.”

I knew I had to tell her the truth. There was no way around it.

“Our plan, before you and I got together, was to get a hotel room. It would be the first and only time we spent the night together. We’ve made love in the past, but we aren’t intimate now and wouldn’t be except that time.”

Kara sighed, “I should have known how hard this was going to be. I know something of your history and all about your reputation as a kind of Casanova. The Prom is still far in the future. We’re taking things one day at a time. If I ask you in May not to do that, will you agree not to?”

What I’d said to my dad earlier was very much true. A steady girlfriend. I wasn’t sure how to deal with that. At this point, though, the only way forward was one step at a time, one foot in front of the other.

“Are you thinking that we’re going steady?” I asked warily.

“That scares you, doesn’t it?”

“I guess it does,” I admitted. “I want to date you, and I don’t plan on dating anyone else. I will see my friends, of course, and a lot of them are female. I won’t have sex with any of my friends, unless you and I have some kind of agreement beforehand, which I am not expecting to happen. It’s not quite going steady, but for all intents and purposes, it is. No girlfriends other than you, and no sex with any of my friends, and that would include Bethany.”

I was finessing the whole situation with Stephanie, but I didn’t see that I had a choice. There was no way it could get back to Kara, and I would be keeping the promise I was making.

“Good. I’d rather we were officially going steady, but I can work with what you just promised. I know it’s difficult for you. You’re used to having all these girls who drop their panties if you simply look at them. You’re going to have to work on that. I’ll help you. Both by being your lover and being your friend to help you work through any issues.”

“Thanks. You know that on Sundays I work with my friend Beth on our business. Also, not this weekend, but the next, I’ll be in Cincinnati for a government symposium. That Sunday afternoon I have to go see my boss. The next Saturday I’m having dinner with my friend Joyce, who is my boss’ granddaughter. I hope all that is OK.”

“Well, for that weekend you won’t see me, I guess we could go out on the Thursday before or the Monday after. I can be accommodating and flexible. I know you have obligations. So do I. As long as we communicate, I think everything will be fine.”

“One last problem. Your dad and the church issue.”

“I’ll talk to him and see if I can get him to back off. At some point, though, you and I will have to deal with that issue.”

“Actually, that makes me think of another problem, and maybe a bigger one.”

“What’s that?”

“The ‘virgin until marriage’ girl dating the ‘screw any girl who asks nicely’ boy is going to lead to a lot of people talking. That’s going to cause you problems, I’m afraid.”

Kara was silent for a bit.

“I guess you aren’t willing to sit at our lunch table?” Kara said.

“No, not really. I mean, I could, but I don’t think that would help, anyway. Honestly, if it were up to me, I’d want you to sit at my lunch table with the rest of my friends.”

“I don’t want to hide our relationship,” Kara said.

“Me either, but everyone will assume that you’re having sex with me once they see us together. And people will find out unless we never go out, and never spend time together at school. I can’t imagine that you want that. I certainly don’t.”

“No, I don’t. I didn’t consider that problem when we first went out. But people have seen us together already. I don’t think we can hide it.”

“And when my reputation gets back to your dad or your pastor? Then what?”

“We’ll deal with that if it happens. Remember, one day at a time.”

We finished our lunch and before we left the lab, we kissed for several minutes. I really enjoyed the soft caresses and the way her body fit against mine.

After school that day, I talked to Doctor Mercer and told her everything that had happened, but focused on the confrontation with my mom. We had a good talk and while Doctor Mercer was concerned about my complete disrespect for my mom, she was happy I had kept my temper under control.

That evening, after dinner, I let Dad know that Stephanie and I were going to go get a present for Donna. We left the house, and once we’d bought the present, we had it wrapped at the store and then drove to Donna’s new house in Batavia. I purposefully hadn’t told Stephanie or Dad so that if it got back to Mom, Stephanie would be able to safely blame me.

Donna was surprised to see us, and she threw her arms around me and gave me a soft French kiss. She took us to see her baby boy, and both Stephanie and I had a chance to hold him. Donna opened her presents and thanked us for the baby clothes and pack of diapers that Stephanie had selected. We didn’t stay long and Donna asked us to come see her again if we could. She hugged me tightly just before we left.

“Of course, you can see me anytime!” Donna whispered in my ear. “I’ll be healed enough in a month or two!”

I smiled, and we said our goodbyes. She gave me a kiss on the cheek and we left.

On Tuesday, it was clear how Kara wanted to handle things. When I sat down next to her in chemistry class, I was a bit surprised when Kara kissed me on the cheek. She’d obviously decided to be open about this. I reached over and took her hand and squeezed it. A bigger surprise came at lunch time.

“Steve, could I sit with you and your friends?” Josh Richards asked.

“Now why would a ‘Holy Roller’ want to sit with us?” Mary asked.

“Mary!” I warned gently. “Give the guy a break. He’s not coming to preach to us, are you Josh?”

“No. I’d just like to be your friend.”

“Then sit down. Just watch out for Mary, though. She’s a tigress!” I teased.

“You ought to know, Steve Adams!” Mary said.

Josh laughed and sat down next to Mary, who gave him a low growl, to more chuckles all around.

“Steve, what’s going on with you and Kara?” Bethany asked. “I heard that she kissed you in chemistry class today.”

“Wow!” I chuckled. “That news spread fast!”

“What Steve Adams gets kissed by a girl like Kara Blanchard, it’s going to spread like wildfire!” Bethany giggled. “I bet the entire Junior High knows already!”

“We’re dating,” I said.

“Dating? You and Kara?”

“Yes,” I said. “Are you changing your mind about our relationship?”

“No, but we should talk,” Bethany said. “It was one thing to try to get into her panties; it’s a whole different thing to date her.”

“Bethany!” Kathy said sternly. “You shouldn’t talk about her like that.”

“Sorry, Kathy. You’re right. Steve, I’m sorry. Let’s talk later. Call me tonight, please.”

“I will.”

That evening I called Bethany. I wasn’t surprised when she immediately asked about Kara.

“I’m in love with her. There’s no reason to hide it.”

“In love?” Bethany asked in surprise. “You’re joking, right? What about Jennifer? What about Karin? For that matter, what about me?”

“Well, first of all, none of the three of you are available to me at this point, so in one sense, it’s not a pressing concern. I don’t have to decide anything today, and I’m following my ‘one day at a time’ plan. Do you want me to speculate? You know what happens when I do stuff like that.”

“Actually, in this case, and given where you are now, I think it’s OK to speculate,” Bethany said.

“In all honesty, I don’t think Kara and I will ever marry. She’d pretty much have to give up the whole evangelical thing because that’s not something I could ever accept. I certainly wouldn’t want to raise my kids the way she and her friends were raised. That said, now that she’s had sex, her views might well have changed somewhat.”

“Steve, compare how you love Kara at this point with Jennifer and me, and how you loved Birgit.”

I thought about it for a minute and sighed, “It’s closer to Birgit than you or Jennifer.”

“Wow! And you think you won’t marry? I don’t get it.”

“Neither do I. I didn’t plan for this to happen. You know it started out as teasing and just kind of spiraled out of control. All I can do is take things one day at a time,” I said with a sigh. “But I can give you an example of why I don’t think we’ll marry. She’s not allowed to go to dances with me, so I’m taking Elyse to the Sweetheart Dance and you to Prom. On our first real date, I wanted to go to the movies, but she wouldn’t go see a PG movie without permission from her parents.”

Bethany started laughing. “So, she can’t dance with you or go to the movies, but she’ll fuck you? Do you know how messed up that is?”

“Yeah, and that’s why I don’t think this will lead to marriage. But you know what, right now, having just one girlfriend, one that I’m faithful to, is a good thing. It could have been you, Bethany, you do realize that, don’t you?”

“Yes, I know. But honestly, I think this might work out best for us. Of course, if you’re faithful to her, what does that mean for me screwing your brains out at Prom?”

“I let her know that you and I were going to Prom. And what our plans were. She’s still trying to get her head around how to deal with me and my roguish ways,” I smiled broadly. “She might just tolerate that single deviation from monogamy.”

“And Stephanie?” Bethany asked.

“Kara has no idea about that. And I will never tell her. I committed to Kara that I wouldn’t have sex with any of my female friends unless she and I had a clear agreement about it. I didn’t say I would not have sex with my sister.”

“You know what?” she laughed. “You should forget about computers and be a lawyer. Talk about parsing words carefully.”

“Hell, Bethany, I’m just trying to get through life one day at a time! Joyce keeps telling me that everything changes when we go to college. The more I think about it, the more I’m sure that she’s right. That means worry about my goals and what I can do each day to achieve them. And seeing what happens.”

“Do you remember when I told you I thought you could be faithful? This will be a good test. Hopefully, you’ll pass. I’m not counting Stephanie because that’s such a strange situation that it really doesn’t apply. But if you truly can go from now until Prom with only having sex with Kara, I think that vindicates my faith in you.”

“Thanks. That is my intent. With Stephanie as the one exception. Well, wait, there’s also Tracy V’s birthday this Friday and I have permission from Kara to keep my promise to deflower Tracy at her party.”

“Permission?! Wow.”

“Yeah, Kara and I discussed it. It’s a one-time thing. There’s no way she’ll agree to random deflowerings. I think that’s why she wants our relationship to be public. She’ll take the risk of people thinking she’s sleeping with me to keep me on the straight and narrow. And frankly, I suspect that all of you agree I need that.”

“Jennifer doesn’t. She’s simply assumed you were going to be unfaithful long-term. Have you told her yet?”

“No. I needed to sort things out with Kara first. I’ll tell Jennifer on Sunday.”

“OK. I support you and I’m here for you.”

“Thanks, Sweetheart!”

We hung up, and I finished my homework before going to bed.

On Wednesday, I was surprised when Miss Alvis, my English teacher for Junior English, asked me to try out for the Spring play. She had been impressed by an oral presentation that I’d given and wanted me to try my hand at acting. I said that I was concerned about practice because I had Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays pretty much booked with other things. She asked me to try out anyway, and said that given the part she had for me was dialogue, and she knew I could memorize it quickly, we could probably work around my schedule. I told her that I’d give it a shot.

On Wednesday evening, Beth and I drove to a vet’s office in Goshen and demonstrated our software. He was interested, and we worked out a deal with him for the software. Beth was ecstatic, and I was pretty happy as well. Beth had three more visits lined up, and she was confident that we’d probably get at least two, if not all three of them.

A WellLived Life Book 4 BethanyChapter 42 Firsts Part III

January 1981, Milford, Ohio I slowly slid my hand down Kara’s stomach until my fingers touched her soft pubic hair. I twirled my fingers lightly in that downy softness for a bit, then asked her to spread her legs. She moved them slightly apart, and I slid a single finger down to her labia and started gently rubbing in a circle. She gasped at the contact and her breathing sped up. I continued with very light pressure, probing between her lips for her clit. She jerked suddenly, gasping when I...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 7 SakurakoChapter 57 Land of the Rising Sun Part III

June 23, 1994, Oguni, Yamagata Prefecture, Japan My first week in Japan flew by, and a routine developed. Sakurako would wake me; I’d exercise and run, then shower and have breakfast, and share tea with Sakurako. After breakfast, I’d meditate, and then have my training session. After lunch, I’d work in the garden, or, as I had this day, wash the floors in the house. Hiroshi would accompany me back to the cottage and we’d talk while I washed up and dressed for dinner. After dinner, I’d spend...

June 15, 1994, Chicago, Illinois “That’s everything, I think,” I said. “My luggage is in the trunk of the car, I have my passport, tickets, and money, both dollars and yen. I can’t think of anything else.” “I’ll see you in five weeks,” Elyse said, giving me a quick hug. “Did you see they rioted in Vancouver last night because they lost the Stanley Cup?” I chuckled, “Only Canadians would riot when they LOSE the Cup! I did see that on the front page of the Trib. Are we ready?” “Michelle and...

A WellLived Life Book 6 Kara IChapter 5 Housemates

August 1981, Chicago, Illinois On Sunday morning, I made my usual call to Karin. I described everything in the apartment and all the things I’d done during the week, including the reception. Both of us would start school in a week and we were both looking forward to it. When we finished talking, I went out for my run, showered, and ate breakfast. I made some tea, started a load of laundry, and then turned on the stereo. I put on an REO Speedwagon album and then relaxed on the couch with the...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 3 JessicaChapter 63 Back to Work

August 21, 1989, Chicago, Illinois “Unbelievable,” I said when I read the headline from the Chicago Tribune. “It says here that Solidarity activist Tadeusz Mazowiecki was nominated to be Prime Minister of Poland.” I hadn’t had a chance to read the paper on Sunday because it hadn’t been delivered before we left for the race track in Michigan. “So now what?” Kara asked. “We’re in totally uncharted territory. Your guess is as good as anyone’s right about now.” “Steve, do you have a minute?”...

A WellLived Life Book 8 StephieChapter 36 My Lifes Journey

July, 1983, Chicago, Illinois I woke up early on the First of July, because my body clock was still set to Swedish time. The flight back had been long but uneventful, and I was happy that the businessman in the seat next to me hadn’t wanted to talk. I read, wrote some longhand journal entries, ate, and generally relaxed while the plane zipped over the Atlantic. I’d come home, taken a sauna, eaten a light meal, and gone straight to bed, not bothering to check messages, look at the mail that...

A WellLived Life Book 1 BirgitChapter 4 Calm Before the Storm

June 1977 When I got home, I grabbed a Coke and some chips and went right to my room. I didn’t think I could deal with my parents or Jeff or Stephanie. I just needed to be by myself. That wouldn’t seem odd to anyone, because I often went to my room to read. In addition, I now had the TV I’d received for my birthday. I flipped it on to WXIX Channel 19 and reruns of Gilligan’s Island and Green Acres played in the background while I read. I had to get my mind clear for the final exams that...

July, 1982, Milford, Ohio I woke up early on Friday morning to make breakfast for Kara and her mom before she went to work. Mrs. Blanchard was surprised, but very pleased. After her mom left for work, Kara gave me a fierce kiss. “Thanks for staying in and cooking breakfast for us,” Kara said. “I hope that doesn’t cause you trouble with Stephanie, with you breaking your normal routine.” “Don’t worry about it,” I said, kissing her back. “We got in a bit later than I expected, and she’ll...

July, 1983, Chicago, Illinois After Rosie left, I stripped the sheets from my bed, as well as the cover of the duvet, and tossed everything into the washing machine. I lit a lavender candle in the room, and then swept and dusted. I did a quick spot-check of the rest of the house and noticed that the tub in the sauna needed to be cleaned. I scrubbed it, then mopped the sauna floor with a damp sponge mop. I finished cleaning the sauna about the time the washing machine finished, so I moved...

May 26, 1991, Iron Mountain, Michigan “Shall we see if we can find a farm?” I asked at breakfast on Sunday morning. “That sounds like a great idea,” Jessica said. “There’s a visitor’s bureau in town,” Kara said. “I saw it when we were here the first time.” “I’m sorry I ruined that vacation,” Jessica said. “Ruined?” I protested. “Are you kidding? August, 1984, Chicago, Illinois The rest of the week proceeded as expected - class on Wednesday, as well as the usual visit from Penny, work on Thursday, and class on Friday. March 25, 2000, Chicago, Illinois “What time do I need to have you home?” “8:00pm will be fine,” Misty replied. “My parents are in Normal visiting my brother at Illinois State. They aren’t supposed to be home before 10:00pm.” Misty and I were in my car on the way to the NIKA apartment which, fortunately, was not being used. With our expansion, it was in more or less regular use, and that meant I didn’t have access to it as often as I would have liked. I was glad there had been a delay in...

June 1977 Friday ended up being a non-event. The more I thought about it, the more I was sure that there was no way on this earth I could say what happened between Birgit and me was a sin. Calling it a sin would debase it into a meaningless act. I could never do that. And the more I thought about Jennie McGrath, the more sure I was that I couldn’t call what she did for me a sin, either. If the church was right, I was going to hell. And frankly, there was no way that could be true. So I...

January 19, 1989, En-Route from LAX to ORD When the engines of the plane started, Jeri reached over and took my hand. She held it while we pushed away from the gate, and taxied for takeoff. Her grip tightened a bit as we hurtled down the runway, but nothing like the death grip she’d had on my arm for the flight out. The plane roared its way into the air and once we leveled out, Jeri’s grip loosened but she didn’t let go of my hand. “How are you doing?” I asked with a touch of...

A WellLived Life Book 7 Kara IIChapter 34 Old Routines and New Ideas

September 1982, Chicago, Illinois The weekend was quiet and besides homework, I worked on the program changes for Frank, called Karin, Tatyana, and Kara, and hung out with my usual study group. Monday was refreshingly normal. On Tuesday morning, I handed Katy my completed intake form. She put it in an envelope and stuck it in her bag. She said she’d let me know soon about the interview. On Tuesday afternoon, after having lunch with Stephie, I made my rounds and then I headed over to Sigma...

A WellLived Life Book 7 Kara IIChapter 35 An Interview and Some New Friends

October 1982, Chicago, Illinois The drive back to Chicago was as uneventful as usual, and I arrived at the apartment just before 6:00pm. When I arrived, Elyse and Stephie were sitting on the couch and Jackie was sitting on the loveseat. Stephie hopped up as I opened the door and greeted me with a hug and a kiss. “Hi, Peaches!” I said. “Glad you’re home, Yankee!” “Hi, Steve,” Elyse and Jackie both said. “Hey,” I replied. “How was the weekend?” “Well, it was just Kurt with me, Stephie,...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 3 JessicaChapter 52 Lifestyle Choices

June 11, 1989, Chicago, Illinois It was just after 3:00am when I kissed Trish goodbye. She’d been an enthusiastic, energetic, and adventurous lover. We’d done just about anything either of us could think of, though her breasts weren’t large enough for a tit-fuck. The last time had been in the shower where we’d ostensibly gone to clean up afterwards, but instead I ended up taking her from behind as she leaned against the wall of the shower. “I think I’ll have you again, Steve Adams,” she...

A WellLived Life Book 1 BirgitChapter 38 Freshman Year Ends

May 1978 The first couple of weeks in May were busy with school, work, and friends. Except for Becky, I didn’t even have any dates. But I was OK with that. Well, almost OK. I wanted to see Anna, but it likely wasn’t going to happen until school was out. I had tutoring sessions with Melanie, but she still wouldn’t talk to me about anything other than Spanish. Barely a hello. I was grateful for the tutoring, but it was maddening seeing my friend this way. I hoped someday she could understand...

A WellLived Life Book 6 Kara IChapter 44 Spring Break 1982 Part I

March, 1982, Milford, Ohio As I drove along I-65, I thought about what Stephanie had asked for and what Bethany had said without even knowing about the request. Of course, because Bethany and I were so in tune, she might have actually had an idea that I was struggling with getting involved with my sister again. I kept turning it over and over in my mind and I kept coming to the same conclusion — that I shouldn’t do it. I was torn between doing what Stephanie wanted and doing what Kara and...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 6 SamanthaChapter 21 Georg and Maria

September 7, 1992, Chicago, Illinois “That went reasonably well,” Michelle said when her parents drove off. “There were a few times I thought my expression would give away something I shouldn’t. You were messing with me, weren’t you?” She grabbed both my hands and smiled, “I was telling the truth, in my own way. Thank you!” She leaned forward and kissed my cheek. “So, what’s left?” I asked. “To visit UofC tomorrow and formally withdraw from classes. To spend some time with you and your...

A WellLived Life Book 6 Kara IChapter 14 A Southern Belle a Surprise Proposal two Cheerleaders an Old Flame and a Girl Back Home Part I

October 1981, Chicago, Illinois I arrived back at the apartment just before 10:00pm and saw the address for the party. I decided I wasn’t particularly interested in going so I put on some music, poured myself a glass of wine, and started reading more about Russia. I was alternating between the history and culture book and the Communist Party book, decided on the history and culture book for this time. I didn’t get much reading done because I was thinking about Tatyana, which led me to...

January 23, 1996, Chicago, Illinois “Father, bless!” I said, greeting Father Basil with upturned palms. “Bless you, Stephen,” he said as I kissed his hand. The waiter showed us to a quiet table along the wall of Roditys in Greektown. He took our drink orders and was back quickly. We placed our food orders right away and he left to put them in with the kitchen. “I’m not quite sure how to address this, so I’m just going to ask you bluntly. Are you the father of Michelle’s baby?” I shook my...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 8 NIKAChapter 68 The Rules

June 29, 1995, Chicago, Illinois On Thursday, I finally had lunch with Melissa again, something I hadn’t been looking forward to. Much like with Cèlia, Melissa and I had passed an inflection point and I was left with sub-optimal paths forward. I’d been struggling with the possible solutions, and all of them had pitfalls. When I walked into Takumi, I had something of a plan. Whether it was good or not would only be known once everything played out. “I spoke to my wives,” I said after we’d...

December 5, 2000, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota “I had a good time last night,” I said. “I was surprised you invited a friend!” Mary laughed as we walked into the exam room, “Naomi had a good time as well. You know what a Resident’s life is like.” I nodded, “No social life.” “Exactly. You guys seemed to hit it off pretty well.” “Yes, but I’m not here for that!” “You’re everywhere for that, and you know it!” I couldn’t help but laugh. “Let’s just say that you hit the sweet spot -...

A WellLived Life Book 3 PiaChapter 25 The Puzzle and the Cat Part II

March 1980, Hovås/Göteborg, Sweden I woke early as usual, but just enjoyed being in bed with Katt. When she woke, she hopped out of bed and pulled a robe out of her closet and handed it to me. “There’s a spare toothbrush in the bathroom. Go have your shower, then we’ll have breakfast after I have my shower.” I quickly showered and brushed my teeth, and went back to Katt’s room. She went to shower and came back a few minutes later. She dressed, and I got a very good look at her sexy body...

April 5, 1997, Chicago, Illinois “You missed cuddles this morning!” Birgit said accusingly when I walked into the house about 9:30am. “I know, Pumpkin, but I had a work emergency and had to go see Aunt Joyce and Grandpa A.” “And now we have to get ready for karate!” “I know. We’ll have some family time this afternoon. I don’t have any plans.” “Good!” I hugged her and the rest of the kids, then went to find Kara. September 3, 1989, Chicago, Illinois “Good morning, Sensei,” I said, bowing to Sensei Jim. “Good morning!” he said waving me to a chair in his office. “How was your trip?” I asked. “Enlightening. I spent most of my time acting as a manservant to Sensei Robert and Sensei Hiro.” “He who will lead, must first serve,” I said. “Someday, I’m going to send you to Sensei Hiro, should he live long enough. October 29, 2000, Chicago, Illinois Birgit followed me as far as the stairs, then scooted upstairs when I went to the front door and opened it. “Hi!” Sophie said. “Hi!” I replied and held the door open so she could come into the house. I closed the door behind her then led her to my study where I waited until she went in, and then walked in, closing the door behind me. I nodded to one of the wingback chairs, she sat down in one, and I sat down in the other. “Is something wrong?” she...

A WellLived Life Book 8 StephieChapter 61 Anala Part II

August, 1983, Chicago, Illinois I walked in the near 90°F heat to Carla’s place. I was grateful that the humidity of the morning had dropped significantly; otherwise the heat would have been unbearable. By the time I walked up the steps to the apartment over the photography studio and knocked on her door, I had broken into a light sweat. Carla answered almost immediately and invited me inside her studio apartment. The air was moderately cool, and the window air conditioner was running full...

July 1982, Milford, Ohio On Tuesday morning, I kissed Kara goodbye and headed to my parents’ house for my usual morning routine with my little sister. She was happy that I could spend the morning with her and asked to take a walk, so we weren’t in the house with my mom. “Let me guess — this walk will end in the clearing,” I said with a smile. “Yes,” she said, taking my hand as we walked down Overlook towards Klondyke. March 13, 1994, Chicago, Illinois “Hi, Steve!” Ailea said when she opened the door. “Hi,” I replied, accepting the offered hug. There was no touching of lips, just of cheeks, and I wondered if I’d misread her intentions at her birthday lunch, or if, perhaps, she detected my reluctance to return the offered affection. “Lunch is ready, so go ahead and sit. I’ll bring it in from the kitchen.” I went to the low table, sat down, and a minute later, Ailea brought miso soup and sushi, our usual...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 10 BridgetChapter 72 An Explosive Discovery

April 3, 1997, Dallas, Texas “Remember what I said about drinking too much,” I said, as I poured bourbon into three cups. We’d stopped at a liquor store, bought a bottle of Blanton’s, and then returned to the small suite I’d reserved at the Westin. Deborah’s room was down the hall, and Krissy’s was two floors below. Krissy’s comment had caught me a bit off guard, but I hadn’t reacted visibly. I didn’t know her quite well enough to know if she’d been teasing with Deborah, so I was being...

September 1, 1987, Chicago, Illinois “I heard that you have some kind of plan to help Ed,” I said to Connie. “There’s no plan,” she replied. “A witness who saw the shopkeeper alive after Ed left came forward.” That sounded convenient, and I wondered if the witness was real or someone that Anthony had put forward to solve the problem. Certainly, the videotape was real, because I couldn’t imagine how Anthony could have faked that, but the witness? Who knew? “So is he being released? Or is...

August 17, 1997, Chicago, Illinois We finished lunch and Marissa and the younger kids went to play, but Natalie sat with the adults to talk, with coffee, tea, or soft drinks. The Sarcus were very comfortable, but the Heaths were still struggling. But, vitally, they hadn’t left and hadn’t insisted Natalie leave the group. “Can you explain how you developed this attitude and approach?” Chris asked. July 1979 — Falkenberg, Sweden On Friday, when I got back from my run, Pam was in her bra and panties again. I whistled at her, she giggled, then finished dressing. I showered, and we went to breakfast and finished up our last day. Once class was done, we were pretty much free. On Saturday, we’d have several optional activities and then on Sunday we’d head back to our host families. After dinner on Friday, I took Pam’s hand and we walked towards the river. July 1980, Over the North Atlantic We reached cruising altitude, and I settled back to read my book. Pam raised the armrest between us, snuggled close to me and read as well. After the cabin crew picked up the trays and offered drinks again, they passed once more, offering headsets for the movie. Trevor and Maria took them, but Pam and I didn’t, instead we turned on...

November 8, 1993, Chicago, Illinois A dark fog swirled before my eyes as I tried to take stock. My head hurt, badly. I felt something on my face and realized, dimly, it was an oxygen mask. My right hand was uncomfortable and I recognized the feeling of an IV and pulse-oximeter. My left arm ached fiercely. On my chest I felt the pads and wires of an EKG. I didn’t feel anything else wrong as I continued taking inventory. I tried to open my eyes, but the fog didn’t clear. I tried to speak, but...

August, 1983, Chicago, Illinois In the morning Anala and I ran as we had the previous time, then showered together, carefully washing each other’s bodies in an intimate but non-sexual way. After our shower we went to the kitchen and I made breakfast and we sat down to eat. “Steve, may I make a suggestion?” she asked. “Sure.” “Broaden your circle of friends. May 1979 The limo dropped me at home about 9:00pm. I took my stuff to my room, stripped, and hung up the tux. The rest of the things went into the hamper. I took a shower, put on shorts and a t-shirt, and walked down the hall into my dad’s office. I saw no reason to put this off any longer. “Stephen, you need to explain yourself!” my mom demanded. “I was in Mrs. McGrath’s, well, Mrs. Sanders’ now, wedding, as I said.” “You walked her down the aisle! February, 1983, Chicago, Illinois Our first joining since the previous summer was slow and sweet, trying to express our deep love for each other through the motions of our bodies. When we finished, Karin held me tight and refused to let me move off of her. “Sleep there, please,” she whispered.
