After breakfast the next day, I rode the transit tube to Cinnity to meet with Sereine instead of hopping. I needed time to get my thoughts in order prior to my meeting with Sergei. I also needed to give the meeting with my future security team some consideration.

Most people objected to the minor sensation of bouncing and swaying that was induced into the tube by its high-speed passage through minor air turbulence. Personally, I enjoyed it and found it to be relaxing. So sitting on the tube was an ideal way to get the time I needed to relax and think about things. Once in Cinnity, I caught a hover cab to Sereine’s apartment.

“Morning, Sereine, how are you making out with your packing and everything?”

“I’m doing good, Doug. Here, let me clear that chair off so you can sit down.

“I am always surprised by how many belongings I accumulate during an assignment. When I first started with the police department, I was able to fit all of my things into a couple of boxes. Now I need a moving company to come in and pack everything, and a large hover van to move it to a warehouse.”

“Is your friend, Coral, here, yet?”

“Yes, she is, but there are a couple of things I need to explain about her before I introduce you to her.

Coral is my friend, but most people think of her as my pet. She is a Bushbie from Toomby. I was stationed at the Trade Checkpoint on Toomby, and we were tracking the confederates of a rogue D-Hopper through the forests. We found three dead Bushbies in a clearing. A fourth Bushbie was lying on the ground at the edge of the trees. I could tell that the Bushbie was an infant, and based on her cries, one of the dead Bushbies must have been her mother. We interrogated the D-Hopper’s confederates after we caught them, and they told us that they had startled the Bushbies into attacking them, and they’d had to kill them in self-defense.

“I went over to the baby Bushbie to comfort it, and when I did so, the Bushbie decided to adopt me as her Mother. Bushbies are empathic and telepathic, so as I was soothing her, she established a mental link with me. I didn’t know what had happened, but I could clearly sense her feelings of loss, pain, and anger. Somehow, I knew that she wanted me to take care of her, so I took her home with me and raised her. That’s how I obtained Coral. What I have learned is, you don’t ‘own’ a Bushbie. When someone bonds with a Bushbie, it is more of an equal partnership.

“I didn’t know anything about Bushbies back then. When I got back to town, my fellow officers learned that I had brought back a Bushbie, and they educated me in an attempt to get me to return Coral to the wild. They were actually fair in what they told me for they let me know that Bushbies made wonderful companions. They also told me that Bushbies could be very lethal to others who threaten their human. They let me know that if I decided to keep the Bushbie, I needed to train it so it would know not to hurt or kill other people just because they were angry with me.”

“Why would they do that? It seems to me that if you wanted to raise it as a pet, there was nothing they should have to say about the matter.”

“Well, to tell the truth, by the time they finished telling me about the problems and hazards that I would face in raising a Bushbie, I almost took Coral back to the forest. Bushbies form telepathic links with humans. Once those links are firmly in place, the Bushbie and human are bonded in a way that causes extreme emotional pain when the link is broken. The bond between Coral and I had not stabilized by that point, but I was lonely and decided to keep her. That decision was good in many ways, but keeping her has caused me a few problems, also.

“Bushbies can sense the emotions and feelings of the people who are near them, and as I said, Bushbies are also extremely protective of their human. Coral can pass the feelings and emotions that she picks up from other people to me over our link. I always know where I stand with the people who are around me. I always know if a person is a real friend or if they are just being friendly for what they can gain from a relationship with me. That makes having a casual friendship with someone who isn’t really fond of you difficult, for you always know their true feelings.

“Then there was the time I took Coral for a walk during the evening. I was living on the edge of a rundown part of the city. As we approached an alleyway, Coral was feeding me a sense of danger and greed. It made me a little uneasy, but my mind was on other things, so her warnings didn’t register in my conscious mind as warnings. As I passed an alleyway, two men tried to grab me. Coral launched herself at my attackers. The training I had given her let her know that she should limit herself to just disabling a person who attacked me. I didn’t want her to kill someone. Her claws are long and sharp; she used them to disembowel one man and to lay the second man’s face open. They required extensive treatment in a hospital before being tried and sentenced to a prison planet for violent criminals.

“Does Coral represent a threat to me or my people if we are not trying to attack you?” I asked.

“No, I believe you would be safe. I have made it clear to her that humans get angry at each other, and sometimes they feel as if they want to harm another person. She understands the difference between wanting to harm someone and actually attacking the person. If you were angry and thinking of harming me, she would warn me, and would be ready to attack you, in case you tried to carry out an attack. Bushbies are also very protective of young humans. She understands the difference between my being attacked by a child and by an adult. She might threaten the child as a warning without harming the child, but she would attack the adult.

“Would you like to meet her?”

“Yes, I think I would.”

Sereine walked down the hall and opened a bedroom door. As I watched, a large animal glided down the hall toward me. As Coral entered the room, I got a good look at her. She was obviously feline, but she was built very much like the Rottweilers I had seen on Earth, only bigger. She was big boned and all muscle, but very lithe. Her head, long neck, tail, and ears were similar to those of a Siamese cat, though she had very large paws like a lion. Her fur was short and smooth. Its coloring was blotchy spots of medium brown on a jet-black background. She would be very difficult to spot if she were lying motionless in a forest.

Coral stopped in front of me, and looked into my eyes. I felt a strange sense of someone going through my mind and examining things.

“Doug, this is Coral. Coral, this is Doug. Doug is the friend that I told you about, Coral. I like him, and I hope that you will accept him as my friend.”

Holding the back of my hand out so Coral could sniff it, I said, “Hello, Coral. Sereine has told me a bit about you, and how the two of you met.”

Coral ignored my hand. Instead, she reared up placing her front paws on my knees. That was a heavy load, for I think she weighed over one hundred and sixty pounds. She then extended her muzzle toward my face, and sniffed my breath while looking into my eyes. I don’t think she had broken eye contact with me since entering the room. She must have decided in my favor, for she dropped her muzzle and extended her head toward mine. I got a feeling that I should press my forehead against her head as a form of greeting, so I did. She dropped back to the floor, and looked up at Sereine.

“I guess Coral likes you, Doug. I’ve only seen her do her head bump greeting a few times. Everyone that she has done that with has become a very good friend to us.

“Will taking her with me to Earth be a problem, Doug?”

“I won’t have a problem with her being around us. I think my ladies and friends will get used to her, too. However, I’m not sure how the Earth authorities will react to her presence. We will have to work it out with them while in the course of setting up the Embassy. If they have a problem with her as a pet, we can list her as part of our night security force. I doubt that an intruder would be a problem for her if they came face-to-face in the dark.”

“Bushbies like to roam at night, so I often take Coral out and let her off her leash, so she can get some exercise. She would like it if we let her roam at night. It shouldn’t be a problem as long as the security guards know that she may be around. If an intruder invades our area undetected, Coral will know they are there. I’ll train her to let the guards know where the intruder is located.”

“Do you ever take Coral with you when you go out for the day?”

“I take her with me every chance I get. We have been together for about six years, and she is still young for a Bushbie. I guess you could say she is the equivalent of a young adult. She is very inquisitive and gets a lot of enjoyment going places with me, and like most young Bushbies, she is very playful.

“The way people react to her is sort of amusing. She is very well behaved around other people. I treat Coral as if she were a pet, so most people see her as a very large, but harmless, house cat. Some of them even allow their children to play with her. She really enjoys playing games with the young children. She lets them wrestle her to the ground, and even puts up with them pulling on her ears and tail. When she gets tired of their games, she just withdraws to where they can’t reach her ... usually, up a tree. Most of the people here on Vora that I know, aren’t familiar with Bushbies. I sometimes wonder how they would react to their kids playing with her, if they knew just how lethal she could be in certain circumstances.”

I had lost track of Coral while talking to Sereine. Looking around I found her curled up beside my feet.

“I’m curious about why you didn’t bring her with us when we went to Earth.”

“I considered it, but you were in a hurry and I didn’t want to create problems. Especially since I hadn’t had the chance to introduce you to Coral. If things didn’t work out right with Coral and the rest of the group, it might have been a problem. I explained the situation to Coral and we agreed that it would be best if I went to Earth without her.”

“I can see that that might have been a problem, but from now on please at least let me know what’s going on. I would like to be informed of a potential problem so I can consider it in my future plans and actions.

“I will be meeting with Sergei Magnusson this afternoon to go over his plans for security. You are welcome to attend. Is there anything you will need for the Trade Checkpoint facility that he needs to take into consideration?”

“I’m busy for the rest of the day so I can’t be there. The only thing that I can think of that I will need is some office space, office equipment, and an area to lock up the people we arrest; but that would be something your architect needs to address.”

“If you need any help with anything, Sereine, let me know. I will see you at the meeting if nothing comes up between now and then.”

Sereine returned my goodbye. Coral slunk over to me, reared up, and placing her front paws on my shoulders for balance. She repeated her head bump, dropped to the ground, and then returned to the chair and lay down.

Perhaps I should qualify my comment about her resembling a large house cat. There are several varieties of house cats on Vora that are almost as big as an Earthly cougar, but those cats are slender like an Earth greyhound. Coral was that big, but not at all slender. She was a solid mass of muscle and bone.

I hopped back to my parents’ place, and got there in time for lunch. Betty and Carol had been busy in Mom’s kitchen, fixing us a gourmet lunch. They had told Mom and Dad to be there for lunch or they would miss one of Betty’s specialties. The food was so good that Dad and I overate. What surprised me the most was, Mom had let Betty use her kitchen, unsupervised.

Rita told me that while I was gone, Mom and my ladies had gone shopping for things that they would need on Earth. Dad had several storage shelters available, so he had set aside one of the small shelters for me to use. Mom and the ladies would leave their purchases in the storage shelter when they got back.

I was running a little late, so I had to hop to Sergei’s office building. When I entered his office, I noticed that he had a number of posters leaning against the wall near his chair.

“Glad you could make it, Doug.”

“It’s good to be here, Sergei.

“Before you start your presentation though, I want you to know that I found a large piece of land for the Embassy, and am in the process of buying it. It measures two-point-five miles by three miles in size, and has very flat terrain with only a few depressions and a few small hills along the western edge.

“That sounds ideal, Doug. When you leave to return to your planet, I would like you to take my D-Hopper Dan Staffer and Landscape Photographer Tim Hart with you. I want Tim to photograph the property and I want the two of them to evaluate it for defensive weaknesses.”

“That will be fine with me. Just be sure that they are aware that they should not eat or drink any of Earth’s food or beverages for they are full of sugar.”

“I am sure Dan and Tim will appreciate your warning.

“What we have designed for you is an inner and an outer defensive perimeter.

“Does the property have some sort of fencing?”

“Yes, but the fence is just wooden posts with plain wire strung between the posts.”

“That’s fine for our purposes. We will post signs on the fence warning people to stay out. The signs will caution the people that there are both lethal and nonlethal defensive weapons deployed.

“We will install a line of sensor posts around the property, twenty-five feet inside of the fence line. The sensor posts will provide overlapping coverage of the outer perimeter. The sensors will detect the presence of life forms and the computers monitoring the sensors can be programmed to disregard specific life forms. There will be microphones, speakers, and cameras located on the sensor posts to communicate with any intruders, and record their actions. This will be an automated detection system that can be overridden by the operators in the security control room.

“One hundred yards from the fence line, we will deploy rovers at one mile intervals. Each rover sits on its charging unit until it receives a deployment order. The rover is an armored disk that measures about four feet in diameter, and is one foot thick. They are very fast and highly maneuverable. It’s a computer-controlled device and can be operated in either manual or automatic mode. It’s equipped with communications equipment, visible and infrared lights and cameras, detection sensors, speakers, microphones, and a neural stun gun. I don’t think you need to arm it with lethal weapons.

“When an intruder is detected, the rovers on each side of the intruder are deployed and vectored to the intruder by the sensor posts. We record the intruder’s actions on camera and warn them to leave the premises. If they remain in place and attempt to communicate, an alert is sounded at the command center requesting human intervention. If the intruder continues their penetration of the property, we use the neural stunner to immobilize them. A security detachment will then be alerted to go collect the intruder and return them to the Embassy’s holding cells.

“The inner defensive perimeter is very different from the outer perimeter. It consists of a privacy wall surrounding the Embassy grounds. There will be a guard station at all four corners, and depending on the size of the Embassy, additional stations may be necessary between the corner stations. Each guard station will be equipped with weapons and a shield generator. The shield generators will form a force field over and around the Embassy grounds. The force fields have three operating states: Normal, Level One Alert, and Level Two Alert.

“In the Normal mode of operation, the shield generator produces a weak force field. The generator can be programmed to allow air, light, radio waves, people, birds, small animals, and insects to pass through the force field; but it will sense the approach of high-velocity projectiles, such as bullets, and switch the mode of operation to Level 1 Alert. The sensors will detect the splinters of the Embassy staff and their families. If the person is authorized access, the generator will allow the person to pass through the force field in both directions. If they have no splinter or if they are not authorized access, they must enter and leave through the front gate. However, security can override the force field to allow them to enter and exit at one of the security stations.

“When an intruder or attack is detected, the shield generators automatically switch to the Level One Alert mode of operation. In this mode, a strong force field is generated. The field will stop all solid projectiles and objects, but it will allow air and light to enter and leave the Embassy grounds. The sensors will detect the Embassy staff’s splinters and allow authorized security personnel to pass both ways through the force field. However, the remaining Embassy staff will only be allowed to enter the Embassy. They cannot leave through the force field until the danger is neutralized and the force field is reset to Normal. In this mode, the programming can be set to enable or disable manual override of the field to allow entry of unauthorized people.

“If an attack is made using chemical or biological agents, gas, energy, light, or radiation weapons, the shield generators automatically switch to the Level Two Alert mode of operation. In this mode, nothing gets through the force field. Personnel with splinters are not allowed to pass through the field for even the smallest opening could endanger everyone that’s inside of the shield and anyone entering the compound could potentially be carrying whatever it was that triggered the alert. Interior lights will come on and stay on while operating in this mode. Air scrubbers are used to remove excess carbon dioxide, but if the mode is maintained for a prolonged time, a supplemental air supply is required. External sensors are used to determine if the threat is still present. A special cable that’s impervious to the force field is used to connect the sensors to the Security Control computers. The security personnel must manually reset the shield generators; they do not automatically reset.

“The inner defense perimeter will have sensors to detect both ground and airborne intruders. In theory, a ground-based intruder should never be able to reach the inner perimeter. However, there are a few exceptions to this generalization. If an intruder is in an armored vehicle, the rovers are useless. This situation will be sensed by the inner defense perimeter’s sensors and the energy cannon or other means can be used to halt the vehicle. It’s also possible for an intruder to use a non-metallic object to make an airborne assault and land between the inner and outer perimeters. Once they land, the inner perimeter will detect the ground-based intruder and dispatch Rovers to neutralize the intruder.

“Low-flying aircraft, bombs, and missiles are classed as airborne intruders, and they are neutralized using either drones or the energy cannon. The drones are launched from their pop-up deployment stations, and energy cannons are mounted on the roofs of the four corner guard stations. It’s assumed that you will have a prohibited airspace buffer zone. When an airborne intruder enters this buffer zone, a drone is launched to intercept the intruder. If the intruder is a manned aircraft, the drone will attach itself to the aircraft and use its electronic and high-powered directional speakers to warn the pilot to leave the buffer zone. If the pilot ignores the warnings, the drone generates a powerful high-pitched whine that’s focused on the pilot’s compartment. This induces extreme pain in the pilot’s head. If the pilot continues to penetrate your airspace, the drone will release itself from the aircraft and then use its energy cannon to disable the engines. If an aircraft gets too close to the Embassy, or if a missile is fired at the Embassy or if a bomb is dropped from a plane, the energy cannon will destroy the aircraft, missile, and/or bomb as it enters Embassy airspace. If a high-flying aircraft is approaching the Embassy’s airspace, the aircraft will be monitored and permitted to continue if no threat is detected. If a threat is detected, it will be treated as an airborne intruder.”

“Sergei, have you ever met or heard of Police Officer Sereine Tatting?”

“No, I don’t recall the name. Why?”

“She has been assigned as the Trade Checkpoint’s D-Hopper. She has an unusual pet that she wants to take to Earth with her. She told me about the pet and its traits, and we talked about letting it be part of the night security patrol. Do you know anything about Bushbies?”

Sergei froze in place, and as I watched, his eyes opened wider and wider.

“Bushbies, she has a pet Bushbie?”

“Yes, why?”

“Doug, a Bushbie is never a pet. They are among the most intelligent and lethal non-human animals in the Multiverse. If they are adopted at a young age, and raised by the person they bond with, it’s usually safe to have them around other people if they have been trained properly.

“She probably already knows this, but if you allow a Bushbie in your compound, be sure that she introduces the Bushbie to everyone in the compound, even children. Once a Bushbie knows that your compound is its home and it’s introduced to someone, the Bushbie will know that the person is permitted to be in the area and will not harm them; unless, of course, the person tries to harm its human. However, you need to be careful around them for they tend to defend their human without stopping to think. If the Bushbie’s human is ever threatened, then God help the person making the threat.”

“Sereine told me most of that this morning, Sergei, although she didn’t stress the danger as severely as you did. She told me that some of her neighbors’ kids play with her Bushbie wrestling with it and even pulling its ears and tail.”

“An adult Bushbie will protect both Bushbie and human children. They are very protective in that way. They are also empathic, so they know the children are just playing, so they tolerate the rough play. They will also tolerate rough play with adult humans, but I would be very careful playing with an adult Bushbie. If they know you and like you enough to play with you, they won’t intentionally hurt you. However, since you are an adult, they may play a little rough, and in comparison to them, you are very fragile.”

“I think I hear you saying that it will be okay to be around her Bushbie, Coral, if Coral has been introduced to everyone. However, do you think Coral would be a good night guard?”

“Yes, you should be very safe with her around. As a night guard, you won’t find a better guard. If she is trained to work with the other guards, the Embassy grounds will be safe for everyone except an intruder.”

“Okay, Sergei, I feel comfortable with your input. The defensive system looks as if it will do what I need it to do. Where do we go from here?”

“When I get the pictures of your property back, we will review them and then finalize the plans for the defensive perimeters and the control room. Then there will be the installation and alignment of the equipment, followed by final approval of the system.

“Once I have priced out the equipment and labor, I will submit an invoice to you for the equipment and half the labor. When I receive payment, I will place the order and store the equipment until it’s time to do the installation. The balance will be due at the time of final approval.”

“That’s fine with me Sergei. I guess I need to get out of here and let you get back to business.”

Sergei became very serious and said, “Doug, I have been debating with myself about telling you something about Bushbies, and since it appears that you are going to spend a good bit of time in the vicinity of your friend’s Bushbie, I think it’s important for you to know this.

“In our society people regard other species as sentient or non-sentient. A non-sentient species is generally thought of as nothing more than a dumb, dirty animal. Our scientific community uses a classification system that defines sentience in a species. The scientists all agree that the classification system is flawed, but they can’t agree on how to fix it. Therefore, they created an unofficial third category, which is semi-sentient. As far as the scientific community is concerned, Bushbies fall into this category.

“Bushbies satisfy many, but not all, of the hallmarks required to be classified as sentient. Most scientists are of the opinion that Bushbies are sentient, but since they fail the classification test, they are officially categorized as non-sentient.

“My first job in a security task force was on Toomby. I was partnered with a man that had a Bushbie. He explained Bushbies to me by telling me that they are not and never will be a pet. They are friends, companions, or partners, but never pets. Your friend probably knows this, but it’s easier for her to allow the public to think of her Bushbie as a pet.

“While a Bushbie is less intelligent than a human, they are capable of logical thought. They are empathic and they communicate using mental images or thoughts rather than words. Some people think of that as a form of telepathy. Since they communicate in images and thoughts, they do not have a written or spoken language and do not maintain written records. The presence of a spoken and written language is one of our society’s hallmarks of sentience. Our scientific community does not agree on the nature of the Bushbie’s society and social structure, so they are classified as having no discernible social structures, which is very different from not having those structures.

“Bushbies are very social beings that form friendships and bond with other Bushbies and people. The one thing you must be very aware of is, the Bushbie is in control of the relationships that it forms with others. If the Bushbie does not find you worthy of being a friend, it will not offer friendship to you. It will also sever a friendship if it thinks you are no longer worthy of being its friend. You can refuse its friendship, but you can never force a Bushbie into a friendship.

“Your friend Sereine is a very lucky person to have bonded with a Bushbie. They can be wonderful friends and companions. Don’t ever forget that a Bushbie is protective of those it considers a friend, and it’s ultra-protective of the person it has bonded with. Don’t ever become a serious threat to the welfare of anyone that has bonded with a Bushbie.”

Once I said my goodbyes and was out of Sergei’s office building, I hopped back to my parents’ home. Things were moving faster than I thought they would. Tomorrow, I would talk with my trade agent Carol Matts about representing the merged businesses. Once that was done, we could depart for Slave World.

I commed Carol and arranged an early morning appointment. That night after dinner, I announced our agenda for tomorrow. I was mobbed by four happy women.

We would be leaving for Slave World from Carol’s office, so we went to the meeting together, and my ladies waited for me in the reception area.

“Morning, Doug, what brings you to my office today?”

“I recently became our Ambassador to Earth, and in that capacity, I will have to change the way I am doing business. I’ve decided the best way to do that is to merge my business activities with those of my family.

“I talked it over with my parents and we believe that we could use your services. We need someone who is willing to handle the purchase and sale of merchandise. What we envision is:

1. When we are ready to purchase merchandise, we will tell you what we want to buy, how much to purchase, and the maximum price we want to pay. You would find a seller, negotiate the purchase price, place the order, and arrange for the merchandise to be shipped to our warehouse. We would handle receipt of the merchandise, and pay the invoice and your commission.

2. For sales, we would tell you what we have in our warehouse and our minimum sale price. You would monitor the market price and determine when specific merchandise should be sold. When you decide it’s time to sell the merchandise, you would find a buyer, negotiate the price, arrange for shipment, and let us know how much merchandise to ship to the buyer. We would handle the shipment of the merchandise, invoice the buyer for the merchandise, and pay your commission when we are paid.

3. You would also consult with us on different products that might be profitable to buy from Earth or sell on Earth.

4. We will have to determine an equitable commission for your increased level of effort, and exactly how you should collect that commission. We will need to also determine if there should be any direct charges for items or services related to the sales and purchases.

“Would you be interested in representing us, Carol?”

“Yes, I am interested, but I’m not sure how it will affect my business. Before I can give you a firm answer, I need to think about your proposal and talk with you some more about my role. Can we get together later in the week?”

Opening Earth Part 3Chapter 10

After a leisurely breakfast the next morning, Betty, Misty, and their helpers set up an area to work on the translation. While they were busy doing that, Cindy, Kendrick, I, and our bodyguards left to go to the Guild Office. We only had a short trip to get to our destination, and when we arrived, we went directly to the reception area of Guild Master Kevin Moore’s office. My bodyguards insisted on checking the area before I entered, which alerted Ann Tinny, Kevin’s secretary, to my arrival....

I was expecting Bill to arrive early the next morning, so I left the door ajar. When I heard a knock on my hotel room door, I called out, “Come on in, Bill.” Bill walked into my room with an attractive woman by his side, and she seemed a little uneasy. Bill said, “Doug, this is my wife Susan. Sue, this is Doug.” Sue offered her hand to me and said, “It’s nice to meet you, Doug. Yesterday, Matt and Bill told me about you and since you are going house hunting today, Matt thought that a...

Opening Earth Part 1Chapter 8

After leaving Guild Master Moore’s office and returning to the hotel, Matt and I learned that our ladies weren’t back yet. We left them a note, so they would know we had gone to the hotel’s swimming pool and the note suggested that they join us. The pool was nice. The only problem was the large number of kids made it difficult to swim laps. Matt and I decided to just relax and enjoy the water. We also participated in that male bonding activity commonly known as girl watching, until our...

Opening Earth Part 2Chapter 12

During our ride to the Archer Conglomerate Headquarters, I noticed that Sandy turned her comm unit off. It had chimed three times, so turning it off seemed to be a wise move. I didn’t comment on it as it was evident she didn’t want to speak with her mother. Our driver dropped us off at the front entry and he went to park the limousine in the visitor parking area. The line at the front desk was short, and our driver had rejoined us by the time it was our turn to obtain help from the...

I knocked on the doorframe of Abby’s office. She looked up and motioned me in. As I pulled one of her visitor’s chairs to the front of her desk, I thought we needed to get something more comfortable to sit in. Then I recalled the staff meeting where Sue suggested plain metal chairs for visitors. They were okay for short visits, but sitting in one for too long was uncomfortable. Sue said that she found the uncomfortable chairs got rid of visitors quickly, so she could get back to her work. We...

Acknowledgments: I decided to locate Doug’s Embassy about halfway between Greeley and Fort Morgan, Colorado. The site I selected for the story’s fictitious ranch has the property’s southern boarder overlapping the northern portion of the Riverside Reservoir. I know nothing about the property or the surrounding area. Some of the information contained in this story may appear to be accurate, but any resemblance to reality is pure chance. To the best of my knowledge, the information herein is...

Opening Earth Part 3Chapter 7

After breakfast the next morning, we said our goodbyes to Sereine, Coral, and Sto. Sereine would deliver her report to Carl on Vora and check on the availability of police officers, who could staff the checkpoint on Earth. Then she would be taking Coral to Toomby for a prenatal checkup; Sto was going to support Coral. Sereine expected to return in a week, but she told us to not hold our breaths. It’s nice to see I am not the only one who is learning and using Earth slang. However, it must...

The estate was not equipped to handle the number of people in my party. So, once we arrived, Edgar made a call to a local hotel that was owned by the Archer Conglomerate. He finalized his prior room arrangements for my bodyguards and their family members. He also arranged for D-Hoppers to take a number of my people to their home planets, so they could visit with their friends and other family members. He made the arrangements to get them to Vora for the wedding at the same time. While Edgar...

Opening Earth Part 2Chapter 10

During the remainder of the week, and the weekend, I dealt with the various matters that my staff brought to my attention. I skim read the procedure for determining a currency exchange rate. Most of it addressed financial considerations that were not familiar to me, and I was definitely not qualified to address those considerations. I would have to turn it over to Kendrick and my financial support group. Once I finished that familiarization process, I decided to begin writing the document...

Opening Earth Part 3Chapter 11

The family meeting was scheduled to start at ten. So the next morning, we all had a late breakfast and I hopped us back to my parents’ home. When we arrived, everyone was there except for one of my uncles. He wasn’t responding to Dad’s comms, so we weren’t sure if he was coming. Mom was chairing the meeting and she said we should start without him. Mom started the meeting by defining its purpose. She then had Dad present the status of the new company that the family had formed to do business...

Earths CoreChapter 12 The Earthly Crater

“This obstacle called the Gentic Belt”. Benni explained to Zax, “It encircles the planet, like a very long belt, and can only be safely crossed through the Emerald Cross, on an equipped vessel. Imagined it as the sole punch hole on this large belt”. The girl was very patient and the closeness she maintained to Zax signaled the development of a certain interest. “The buckle is where we’re heading, the Earthly Crater, there- Eh, look! The eruption is finally over”. She pointed at the wall of...

Day 1: When Doug finally woke up at the ranch, the morning started out with breakfast. Bashira, who had a long day yesterday, slept through breakfast. After thanking Betty for a wonderful breakfast, Doug called Secretary of State Charles Boyd. “Good morning, Doug. I let the President’s Chief of Staff Aaron McCaul know about what happened yesterday, and he said he would inform the President. Aaron and I decided you would be busy so we should wait until you contacted us to see if you needed...

Opening Earth Part 1Chapter 5

I am now the Multiverse’s Ambassador to Earth. It is my responsibility and mission to ensure Earth joins the Multiverse with a minimum of difficulties. Now, all I have to do is figure out how to accomplish that mission! I like the people of Earth, and do not want them harmed by the Multiverse taking over their planet. I doubt the Multiverse Government would force itself on Earth, but, I suspect the Guilds will push to open trade with Earth at too fast of a pace, and I will need to resist...

Opening Earth Part 1Chapter 18

The next morning Abby, Sereine, Mac, and I were ready to leave. Unfortunately, Cindy was sick. My ladies told me that she would be fine in a couple of days, so I should go ahead without her. I hopped us to Wayside and we got our traveling equipment, then Sereine hopped us to our next stop. As usual, the trip was uneventful. Abby was excited at first, but then her excitement turned to boredom. We did have one dismal event on the way to First Stop. I had hopped us to our next stop, and when...

Opening Earth Part 3Chapter 8

I had Twixted ahead to reserve a room at the Timson Luxury Hotel, as we usually did when I visited Maribel in Timson before leaving the estate. Maribel currently had a moderately light schedule; well, light relative to how busy she seemed to be during my previous visits to Timson. A light schedule was good for we had a number of things that needed to be discussed, and there were a few items that were important to me. Most of this visit would be dedicated to our discussing specific topics, but...

Matt and I were up early the next morning for we knew Yarl and his crew were eager to complete the installation and get back to Vora. I think they were worried that their food would somehow become contaminated by sugar and turn them into sugar addicts. Things didn’t work that way, but many fears are often totally unreasonable. We needed more drivers than I thought, so Matt, Mary, Bill, Sue, and I went into Greely and picked up the rental equipment that Matt had reserved. With Carla and Ken’s...

We had just arrived, and I felt my link with Sto reestablish itself. All I heard was, “Doug back. Go talk.” The idea of Sto having to be face-to-face with me in order for us to talk over our mental link seemed funny to me. “Hello, Sto. How was Toomby?” “Shots hurt. No go Vet. Sto no need shots.” “Shots? Was there something wrong?” “Vet say need. Sto good. No need shots.” By then Sereine and the rest of my people made it out of the house and had walked over to greet us. “Hello, Sereine....

Cindy was right about us needing a bank. My idea of, me becoming a middleman for my people making deposits to and withdrawals from their Multiverse banks was a stopgap measure that would suffice, but only for a short time. The more I thought about things, it was very evident that the Banking Guild would not establish a bank on Earth in the near future, and we needed one now. By the time I got to my office portable, I had formed a rough plan to handle this issue. My first step would be to...

Opening Earth Part 3Chapter 12

It had been a long and tiring trip back to Earth. The seasons were changing on our layover planets, so we had rain, snow, and temperature extremes to contend with on the different planets. We all agreed that we didn’t care for sitting on a planet in a hundred and two degree heat, and then hopping to our next layover and arriving in the middle of a blizzard and minus twelve-degree cold; the wind chill factor made it worse. I really needed to get a travel shelter. Harry had told me the...

Sereine and I getting stuck in a quarantine shelter for almost a week didn’t really affect my overall schedule. I didn’t have much to do before I had to leave for Shilling, so there was a lot of available time in my schedule. The only impact the delay caused me, was my having to reschedule a few minor things that I wanted to do before I left for Vora. Opening Earth Part 1Chapter 4

While returning to Earth, I had a great deal of time to think about my past activities on Earth, and the changes that my new position would require in regard to my relations with the people of Earth. I had been telling lies of omission to many people since my arrival on Earth. I don’t like lying, but most of Earth’s people were not ready to learn the truth about my being an alien from outer space or about some aspects of my being a D-Hopper. When a D-Hopper opens a planet, they can choose...

By the time Sereine and I got to Wayside, we were both tired. We had let our egos control our actions, by hopping eight shipping containers to Wayside. Their combined mass and volume was more than the utility equipment we had hopped to Earth some months before, and we had been pushing our limits to hop that much equipment. We decided to leave the shipping containers on Wayside, and hop them to the ranch, later. As soon as we had stored our travel equipment and rested, we hopped home. Since...

Earths CoreChapter 15 Earth Shattering Brown Digger

A strong pungent odor burned Zax's respiratory system through his nostrils and rose to his brain, the body organ which contained the soul. Zax woke up from the smell, but when his eyes opened what he saw was foreign. All he could see as he stared above was the ground as the ceiling and a dim light illuminating from somewhere. The last imagery that Zax could remember was the earth he was lying on splitting and a black shadow, like a long and thick whip, moving quickly out of the cracks,...

The trip to First Stop was the usual boring event. When we had arrived on Wayside, it occurred to me, this was the first trip I had made to the Multiverse with no trade goods. On our way to First Stop, Sereine and I briefed everyone on our plans for what each of our two groups would be doing during this trip. We had been talking during the trip, while we rested. From Vora it was only one hop to First Stop. Since we were now based on Slave World, we needed to consider a different planet as our point of arrival and departure. It didn’t make much sense to make three hops to and from Slave World when that would be our first stop. A planet along the route we used to travel between Slave World and Vora would be a better First Stop planet, as it was not commonly used as a rest stop by other D-Hoppers. I would discuss that with Sereine during our return to...
