The estate was not equipped to handle the number of people in my party. So, once we arrived, Edgar made a call to a local hotel that was owned by the Archer Conglomerate. He finalized his prior room arrangements for my bodyguards and their family members. He also arranged for D-Hoppers to take a number of my people to their home planets, so they could visit with their friends and other family members. He made the arrangements to get them to Vora for the wedding at the same time. While Edgar was busy, I called Kendrick to let him know that I was at the estate. He would come to the estate tomorrow morning so we could catch each other up on what had happened while I was gone. I also told Kendrick he would need to finalize the arrangements Edgar made for my Earth bodyguards to visit with their families, and to get back to Vora in time for the wedding.

As the Majordomo of my estate, Edgar was responsible for everything that happened on the estate. While I sat in the living room, resting, he briefed me on what had happened since I left. We got the normal minor problems with the housekeeping and grounds staff out of the way.

Edgar said, “Kendrick hired the two security people that Sergei recommended. Our head of security and I talked with them when they arrived, and briefed them on the existing security arrangements. They took over as the heads of security, and the former head of security is now their assistant. I will introduce you to Samson and Harold when you have finished resting.

“The one thing I am happy about is they took the time necessary to evaluate the estate and the current procedures before they started to make changes. To me that’s a sign of a professional manager. Their new policies are much stricter than what we had before, but I think that’s necessary considering the situation.

“One of the policies they instigated was no unauthorized visitors, and two of my younger Security Guards brought a couple of young women onto the estate without permission. I had to let them go. It’s too bad the men didn’t think the policies would be enforced; they were good workers.

“Sergei’s two men arrived about a week after that. They, Harold, and Samson did a thorough evaluation of the estate, the new security procedures, and the staff. The four of them briefed Kendrick and I on what they believed should be done to improve security. We agreed with their recommendations and they are being implemented.

“Since then, a small group of our staff has been sent to school to learn the proper way to do their jobs, and the rest will be sent in small groups after the first group returns. The new equipment that Sergei’s people recommended is on order, and I will twixt Sergei once we have received everything. His installation crew will install the equipment and train our people to use it. That’s about all I have for you right now, Doug.”

“Let’s go then, Edgar, so you can introduce me to Samson and Harold. They can arrange for a security detail to go with me to the clinic. I have three newbies with me who need splinters, and Betty and Carol need their anti-fertility implants removed. I also need to talk with Doctor Carr as soon as possible, about her returning with me, and I need to discuss, a problem on Earth with her.

Edgar introduced me to Samson Klein and Harold Arbut. I explained my need to go to our local medical clinic, and they selected a group of bodyguards. They came with us also. They wanted to talk with me about my expectations of them. I let Carla, Andy, Ken, and Bashira know that I needed to speak with these two men, and then we talked during our walk to the clinic. After we arrived, I made arrangements for my three newbies to get splintered by Dr. Carr. She and I talked as she worked giving Bashira, Ken, and Carla a physical and inserting their splinters; they also got their pain shots.

“Misty, I just arrived and want know if Kendrick was able to get the equipment and supplies you ordered. I would like to take it with us when we return.”

“Oh, yes. He ordered the list of equipment and supplies I gave him. It was shipped to your parents’ home and they are holding it for us.”

“Was he able to get that portable chemical analyzer that can analyze medicines, so you can tell what the Earth doctors are using to treat their patients?”

“Yes, that was a little difficult to obtain, but he was able to get it.”

“That’s good. I agreed to help some people on Earth with a medical problem they are having. The people of the area suffer from what seems to be a reoccurring ailment. The Earth doctors think it is some type of viral infection. They would appreciate it if you could use some of our more advanced diagnostic equipment to isolate the actual problem. I suspect there is more going on than the doctors realize or their medicines are not very effective.

“The doctors need our medical equipment, but they don’t speak or read Trade Speak, so we will need to have the equipment’s User Manuals, control labeling, meters, and display messages translated into English. That will delay the delivery of the equipment I am purchasing for them, so when we get back to Earth you may need to take a trip with your portable diagnostic equipment to see if any of our medications would be more useful than those they are currently using. We will also have to do something about relabeling the medicines we give them.

“Considering the circumstances in that part of the planet, portable diagnostic equipment may be of more use than the more sophisticated stationary equipment that’s used in a hospital.”

“Why would portable equipment be of more use than hospital equipment? It doesn’t produce the detail of stationary equipment.”

“The area is tropical and the living conditions are primitive. The people are poor and live in small villages that are a long way from the nearest hospital. It’s a long, arduous trip for the villagers to get to the hospitals. The doctors currently travel to the villages and provide treatment to anyone who is sick or injured. Sometimes, the patient dies before the doctor gets to the village.

“The next patient you will be seeing is called Bashira. He is more familiar with that part of the world than I am, so he can describe some of the more common symptoms of the diseases the villagers contract. I’m hoping that you will be able to obtain a quantity of medications that can be used to treat a wide spectrum of similar diseases that we can take back with us. From what I understand most of the patients will be children and the elderly, and they are usually undernourished and have vitamin and mineral deficiencies.”

Misty finished up with Carla, and began treating Bashira. As she worked she asked him a series of questions about the people of the afflicted area, and the symptoms that they displayed. I had told Bashira when he accepted my invitation that the doctor would need this information, in order to be prepared to treat the diseases. If I ever lose my job as Ambassador, I can always go into business as a translator.

While talking with Misty, I told her about marrying my two slaves. Misty removed Betty and Carol’s implants and gave them their annual physicals. She gave me the certificate attesting to their physical and mental wellbeing, and let me know that I may need the certificate at the Court Building.

Samson and Harold had been in the room with me as my bodyguards with the rest of the detail waiting for us in the waiting room. When we finished and came out of the treatment room, I could see that Harold and Samson had made a few significant changes in how my detail did their job. Instead of being seated in the waiting room, they were scattered around the room standing against the walls and alert to everything going on around them.

I invited Misty to the wedding and let her know when I expected to depart for Vora and that I would be leaving from Vora to return to Earth.

When we returned to the estate, I briefed Samson and Harold on my current plans for the month or so that I would be in the Multiverse. I also qualified that those plans were subject to change, based on my meeting with Kendrick, tomorrow. The only things that I planned to do that would require me to have bodyguards with me while on Slave World, were four trips: a trip to the courthouse, the trip I promised to make with Sandy to visit her Mom, a trip to President Jenson’s office, and a trip to the treatment center. My business with Chairman Smart could be addressed by a comm call.

I also let them know about the trips and people I intended to visit on Shilling and on Vora, so they could make the necessary arrangements for my security. Samson and Harold informed me that one of them would be with me whenever I left the estate until they felt my security detail had received the proper training and were doing their jobs as they should be done. Out of curiosity, I asked them what they felt was wrong with my bodyguards prior support.

Samson said, “It wasn’t that their actions were wrong; it’s just that, there are better ways to accomplish what they were doing.

“For example, when you were out in public in the past, you made it clear to your security personnel that you expected them to protect you, and those who were with you. They did what they knew you wanted, but that was not the proper way to do the job.

“Your bodyguards need to focus on the fact that they are there to protect you. What that means is, if you are with a group, you should be their primary concern. If they can protect the others in your group, that’s good, but your safety is their primary concern. If you want other members of the group to receive the same degree of protection that you receive, then we need to provide your group with a larger number of bodyguards and assign specific bodyguards to care for those you designate as requiring individual protection.

“It’s virtually impossible to protect a large group of people in a public setting, Doug. The only thing that bodyguards can do in that situation is take suitable precautions and hope that they will be in position and have enough time to protect the person assigned to them if something happens.”

Harold added, “Sir, one of the things Samson may not have been clear about is we need to know about where you plan to go, who is going with you, and anyone that’s to receive special protection, in advance. That will allow us to assign a suitable number of bodyguards to your party, and to take any special precautions that we deem necessary for the safety of you and your group.”

“Alright, I understand that the two of you are trying to protect me, and I will cooperate with you. Has anyone talked with you about Sto and his abilities?”

Harold said, “Samson and I are familiar with Bushbies. We’ve had no contact with them until today, but we do know what they are capable of doing. What we need to do, is learn more about them and how they can aid us in protecting you.”

Samson and Harold were surprised when Sto established a temporary link with them and responded with, “Sto protect Doug. Sto sense danger. Sto tell bodyguards. Bodyguards and Sto protect Doug.”

“Thank you, Sto. If you can link with my bodyguards to tell them of any danger, they will be better able to protect me.”

Sto had given Samson and Harold a surprise when he talked to them over his temporary link. I could see that they were trying to decide exactly what Sto had meant.

“Gentlemen, communication with Sto can be confusing. I have found that Bushbies communicate with images, and the link they create with our brains allows us to translate those images into words. I have a permanent link with Sto, so the images are clearer to me than the ones you receive. The images are translated into short phrases and you need to learn how to string those phrases together in order to understand what a Bushbie is telling you. What Sto meant was that if he sensed danger, he would let my bodyguards know what he sensed. What he did not say was, he would let them be my first line of defense, and he would handle the matter in his own way if they failed to protect me. I have asked Sto to not kill an assailant if it’s possible to just disable them.”

Harold said, “Yes sir. We will let everyone know of Sto’s abilities, and the way he speaks to someone. We will also discuss how they are to respond if he informs them of danger. Although first of all, Samson and I will need to think about how to best use Sto’s abilities and the advance warning he can provide us.”

Harold and Samson needed more detail as to my movements on this trip, so I found Cindy and we reviewed, with them, what I had to do here in the Multiverse. She pulled up her list of things that I wanted to do and we arranged them in the best order of accomplishment.

Amir and Charlie had talked with Bashira and Ken about being Earth’s official representatives at the wedding. Aaron wanted to go with them, but he and the President decided that he could not be gone from Washington for that long of a trip. I decided to keep Bashira and Ken with me as much as possible, so they could get a good understanding of what the Multiverse was like. Cindy added them as permanent members of my travel group for this trip.

Sereine decided that she would take Coral to Toomby for a follow-up examination. Sto said he wanted to go with them, but he didn’t want any more shots. Sereine told me that when he seemed reluctant to go, Coral had asked him which was more important: her and their kits or avoiding shots. Sto demonstrated that Bushbies are intelligent beings, by immediately letting her know that she and the kits were the most important things in his life. I’ve heard of humans that blew that question, by pausing to consider the matter. The three of them would leave tomorrow morning, and would probably not be back until shortly before it was time for me to leave for Shilling.

Cindy and I finished our review of the things I needed to do on Slave World, and I asked Cindy to give Samson and Harold copies of our trip itinerary. Cindy and I would go through the lists again to update the places I would be going to on Vora and Shilling, and who I would be visiting. Cindy left to give the revised copies of our itinerary to Samson and Harold. While she was gone, I thought about Kenneth and Carla being with us, and I got to thinking about several conversations that I had about them.

Kenneth and Andy had convinced Carla to come with us, although I don’t think it took very much persuasion. Carla had been very curious about what it was like in the Multiverse, since her relationship with Andy had become intense. Her curiosity increased when my four ladies had informed me that they were expecting a double wedding later this year: Carla and Andy would probably have a joint ceremony with Sandy and Fitz here on Earth. Privately, Kenneth told me Carla was a devout Catholic and he didn’t know the church’s position on members of their faith marrying Multiverse citizens. Furthermore, that would be especially true since Sandy, Andy, and Fitz did not believe in the Christian faith.

I talked with Kenneth quite a while during our rest stops. He told me about a few of the requirements the Catholic Church imposed on a church member who wished to marry a person who was not Catholic. The religious intolerance that I was told about regarding Carla marrying Andy seemed wrong to me.

I had joined our church back on Vora when I became an adult. According to our beliefs, two people who wanted to join and share their lives with each other should be allowed to do so, and a marriage ceremony could be performed by anyone that the government had authorized to perform marriages. To us marriage was more of a civil arrangement than a religious ceremony. However, we did have a ceremony in our church comparable to baptism and the church preferred that a child’s parents be married to each other, or at least in some form of committed relationship. However, our church would consecrate the child as a member of the Faithful even if the parents weren’t married to each other.

After I had explained my church’s religious beliefs to Kenneth, he told me about some of the beliefs that he knew about. I told him that the beliefs of the Faithful, Jewish, Muslim, and Christian faiths seemed very similar to me. Granted there were many differences in the specifics of how they worshipped and in their specific philosophies. But the basic belief in a single supreme being, love of your fellow man, and tolerance for other faiths, seemed very similar. Kenneth told me that from his point of view, they were very different. He also told me about a couple of religions that had what I thought were very bizarre religious practices. I decided that I needed to study the beliefs of Earth’s current major religions if I could find enough time. It seemed like a familiarity with the religious beliefs of others would be beneficial in carrying out my Ambassadorial duties. It was also apparent that I did not understand the tenents of the different religions as well as I thought I did.

The subject of religion was something I thought that Kim may wish to address in one of her Multiverse articles. I definitely needed to know more about Earth religions and it would be beneficial for my mission if the people of Earth had a better understanding of Multiverse religions. I made a note to myself to talk with her about writing such an article.

Since the important items had been taken care of, I decided to send several Twixts to Vora and Shilling, to let the people I needed to meet with know that I was back in the Multiverse and the approximate time that I would available to meet with them. My schedule was essentially open on this trip, so I could fit them in at almost any time that they were available to talk with me.

In addition to the Twixts, I also made two comm calls to let Chairman Smart and President Jenson know I was back in the Multiverse, and would like to speak with them. I left a message for Chairman Smart to call me at the estate at his convenience. I was able to reach Andrew’s aide Timothy Clark and told him that I would like to talk with Andrew about the sugar addicts, but there was no rush. He let me know that Andrew’s calendar was full for the next two days, but he could fit me in during the morning of the third day. I accepted the appointment and Timothy would get back to me with a firm time.

I decided to go upstairs and take a nap until dinnertime. On this trip, I really had very little to do, considering the length of time I would be here. I had to pace myself and not rush through things the way I normally did. Otherwise, I would run out of things to do. Well, that wasn’t exactly true, for I needed to do a lot of work on the documentation of Earth’s hazards, customs, laws, society, and the other important differences between life on Earth and in the Multiverse.

With the number of people I brought with me, dinner was a major affair. I had divided my bodyguards into three groups and I took Group 1 to Earth with me.

My Earth bodyguards had come with me for the wedding, and they were enjoying the opportunity to visit with their Group 2 and Group 3 friends. I had actually taken a few people with us from Group 2 in order to have an adequate staff, but had not taken their wives. The reunion was very energetic with questions being asked and answered. The main interest was when they would be able to join us on Earth.

I did not like telling my people that we would be adhering to the original schedule, and I had to apologize for putting the sugar addicts ahead of them. Once I explained the criticality of their situation, they accepted the fact that I had done the proper thing. They didn’t really like the situation, but they did concur with the necessity of getting the sugar addicts off Slave World. I did promise, however, to look at the construction and the move schedules around to see if there was some way to expedite my getting them to Earth. Cindy added that promise to my list of things to do on Earth. I saw her add it to the list without my prompting her to do so, and I got a big laugh out of the thumbs up sign she gave me. That’s an Earth body language gesture that’s not used in the Multiverse. It’s very evident that we were all adapting to Earth.

Kendrick was at the estate when I was ready for breakfast the next morning. I introduced him to Carla, Ken, and Bashira. During breakfast, Kendrick brought me up to speed on what was happening in the Multiverse and the new things that I needed to address. Actually, it was a single general topic, but it was coming from multiple sources. The Trade Guilds wanted to know what they could do to expedite my opening Earth to their traders. I told Kendrick to defer that topic until I had completed what needed to be done on Slave World and Shilling. We could take the time to talk about that when we were no longer under pressure to get the critical items completed. We could also talk with Maribel about the best approach to appease the Trade Guilds by giving them something to do that would actually be helpful. I then briefed Kendrick on what had been happening on Earth.

Opening Earth Part 3Chapter 10

After a leisurely breakfast the next morning, Betty, Misty, and their helpers set up an area to work on the translation. While they were busy doing that, Cindy, Kendrick, I, and our bodyguards left to go to the Guild Office. We only had a short trip to get to our destination, and when we arrived, we went directly to the reception area of Guild Master Kevin Moore’s office. My bodyguards insisted on checking the area before I entered, which alerted Ann Tinny, Kevin’s secretary, to my arrival....

Opening Earth Part 1Chapter 3

I was expecting Bill to arrive early the next morning, so I left the door ajar. When I heard a knock on my hotel room door, I called out, “Come on in, Bill.” Bill walked into my room with an attractive woman by his side, and she seemed a little uneasy. Bill said, “Doug, this is my wife Susan. Sue, this is Doug.” Sue offered her hand to me and said, “It’s nice to meet you, Doug. Yesterday, Matt and Bill told me about you and since you are going house hunting today, Matt thought that a...

Opening Earth Part 1Chapter 8

After leaving Guild Master Moore’s office and returning to the hotel, Matt and I learned that our ladies weren’t back yet. We left them a note, so they would know we had gone to the hotel’s swimming pool and the note suggested that they join us. The pool was nice. The only problem was the large number of kids made it difficult to swim laps. Matt and I decided to just relax and enjoy the water. We also participated in that male bonding activity commonly known as girl watching, until our...

Opening Earth Part 2Chapter 12

During our ride to the Archer Conglomerate Headquarters, I noticed that Sandy turned her comm unit off. It had chimed three times, so turning it off seemed to be a wise move. I didn’t comment on it as it was evident she didn’t want to speak with her mother. Our driver dropped us off at the front entry and he went to park the limousine in the visitor parking area. The line at the front desk was short, and our driver had rejoined us by the time it was our turn to obtain help from the...

I knocked on the doorframe of Abby’s office. She looked up and motioned me in. As I pulled one of her visitor’s chairs to the front of her desk, I thought we needed to get something more comfortable to sit in. Then I recalled the staff meeting where Sue suggested plain metal chairs for visitors. They were okay for short visits, but sitting in one for too long was uncomfortable. Sue said that she found the uncomfortable chairs got rid of visitors quickly, so she could get back to her work. We...

Acknowledgments: I decided to locate Doug’s Embassy about halfway between Greeley and Fort Morgan, Colorado. The site I selected for the story’s fictitious ranch has the property’s southern boarder overlapping the northern portion of the Riverside Reservoir. I know nothing about the property or the surrounding area. Some of the information contained in this story may appear to be accurate, but any resemblance to reality is pure chance. Opening Earth Part 3Chapter 7

After breakfast the next morning, we said our goodbyes to Sereine, Coral, and Sto. Sereine would deliver her report to Carl on Vora and check on the availability of police officers, who could staff the checkpoint on Earth. Then she would be taking Coral to Toomby for a prenatal checkup; Sto was going to support Coral. Sereine expected to return in a week, but she told us to not hold our breaths. It’s nice to see I am not the only one who is learning and using Earth slang. However, it must...

During the remainder of the week, and the weekend, I dealt with the various matters that my staff brought to my attention. I skim read the procedure for determining a currency exchange rate. Most of it addressed financial considerations that were not familiar to me, and I was definitely not qualified to address those considerations. I would have to turn it over to Kendrick and my financial support group. Once I finished that familiarization process, I decided to begin writing the document...

After breakfast the next day, I rode the transit tube to Cinnity to meet with Sereine instead of hopping. I needed time to get my thoughts in order prior to my meeting with Sergei. I also needed to give the meeting with my future security team some consideration. Most people objected to the minor sensation of bouncing and swaying that was induced into the tube by its high-speed passage through minor air turbulence. Personally, I enjoyed it and found it to be relaxing. So sitting on the tube...

The family meeting was scheduled to start at ten. So the next morning, we all had a late breakfast and I hopped us back to my parents’ home. When we arrived, everyone was there except for one of my uncles. He wasn’t responding to Dad’s comms, so we weren’t sure if he was coming. Mom was chairing the meeting and she said we should start without him. Mom started the meeting by defining its purpose. She then had Dad present the status of the new company that the family had formed to do business...

Earths CoreChapter 12 The Earthly Crater

“This obstacle called the Gentic Belt”. Benni explained to Zax, “It encircles the planet, like a very long belt, and can only be safely crossed through the Emerald Cross, on an equipped vessel. Imagined it as the sole punch hole on this large belt”. The girl was very patient and the closeness she maintained to Zax signaled the development of a certain interest. “The buckle is where we’re heading, the Earthly Crater, there- Eh, look! The eruption is finally over”. She pointed at the wall of...

I am now the Multiverse’s Ambassador to Earth. It is my responsibility and mission to ensure Earth joins the Multiverse with a minimum of difficulties. Now, all I have to do is figure out how to accomplish that mission! I like the people of Earth, and do not want them harmed by the Multiverse taking over their planet. I doubt the Multiverse Government would force itself on Earth, but, I suspect the Guilds will push to open trade with Earth at too fast of a pace, and I will need to resist...

The next morning Abby, Sereine, Mac, and I were ready to leave. Unfortunately, Cindy was sick. My ladies told me that she would be fine in a couple of days, so I should go ahead without her. I hopped us to Wayside and we got our traveling equipment, then Sereine hopped us to our next stop. As usual, the trip was uneventful. I had Twixted ahead to reserve a room at the Timson Luxury Hotel, as we usually did when I visited Maribel in Timson before leaving the estate. Maribel currently had a moderately light schedule; well, light relative to how busy she seemed to be during my previous visits to Timson. A light schedule was good for we had a number of things that needed to be discussed, and there were a few items that were important to me. Most of this visit would be dedicated to our discussing specific topics, but...

Matt and I were up early the next morning for we knew Yarl and his crew were eager to complete the installation and get back to Vora. I think they were worried that their food would somehow become contaminated by sugar and turn them into sugar addicts. Things didn’t work that way, but many fears are often totally unreasonable. We needed more drivers than I thought, so Matt, Mary, Bill, Sue, and I went into Greely and picked up the rental equipment that Matt had reserved. With Carla and Ken’s...

Cindy was right about us needing a bank. My idea of, me becoming a middleman for my people making deposits to and withdrawals from their Multiverse banks was a stopgap measure that would suffice, but only for a short time. The more I thought about things, it was very evident that the Banking Guild would not establish a bank on Earth in the near future, and we needed one now. By the time I got to my office portable, I had formed a rough plan to handle this issue. My first step would be to...

Opening Earth Part 3Chapter 12

It had been a long and tiring trip back to Earth. The seasons were changing on our layover planets, so we had rain, snow, and temperature extremes to contend with on the different planets. We all agreed that we didn’t care for sitting on a planet in a hundred and two degree heat, and then hopping to our next layover and arriving in the middle of a blizzard and minus twelve-degree cold; the wind chill factor made it worse. I really needed to get a travel shelter. Harry had told me the...

While returning to Earth, I had a great deal of time to think about my past activities on Earth, and the changes that my new position would require in regard to my relations with the people of Earth. By the time Sereine and I got to Wayside, we were both tired. We had let our egos control our actions, by hopping eight shipping containers to Wayside. Their combined mass and volume was more than the utility equipment we had hopped to Earth some months before, and we had been pushing our limits to hop that much equipment. We decided to leave the shipping containers on Wayside, and hop them to the ranch, later. As soon as we had stored our travel equipment and rested, we hopped home. Since...

Opening Earth Part 1Chapter 24

Turning back to Kim I could see that she had endured all the culture shock that she could handle at this time. “Kim, I think we should set this subject aside, for now. Once you have had a chance to think about it, we can talk about it again if you wish. “I’m curious about whom you work for, and what prompted you to become a reporter. Would you care to talk about that instead?” “Yeah, I would. I think I got in over my head, and you are right. From what your friends have said, I do need to...

Earths CoreChapter 15 Earth Shattering Brown Digger

A strong pungent odor burned Zax's respiratory system through his nostrils and rose to his brain, the body organ which contained the soul. Zax woke up from the smell, but when his eyes opened what he saw was foreign. All he could see as he stared above was the ground as the ceiling and a dim light illuminating from somewhere. The last imagery that Zax could remember was the earth he was lying on splitting and a black shadow, like a long and thick whip, moving quickly out of the cracks,...

Opening Earth Part 2Chapter 3

The trip to First Stop was the usual boring event. When we had arrived on Wayside, it occurred to me, this was the first trip I had made to the Multiverse with no trade goods. On our way to First Stop, Sereine and I briefed everyone on our plans for what each of our two groups would be doing during this trip. We had been talking during the trip, while we rested. During our discussions, it occurred to me that in the future, we might need two penal planets in Earth’s Universe. For the interim...

Opening Earth Part 3Chapter 6

The first thing in the morning, Edgar called Kendrick to let him know I was back. Me ... I was lying between two lovely pregnant women, and I had no plans for getting out of bed until it was absolutely necessary. As usual, my bladder told me it was necessary and I reluctantly got out of bed. When I made it out into the dining room for coffee, Edgar let me know Kendrick had commed, and he had returned the comm to let him know I was out of bed. Kendrick showed up an hour later, and at the...

Opening Earth Part 1Chapter 16

Matt, Bill, Sue, and I were waiting for Aaron when we heard a knock at the door. Rita answered the door. “Good afternoon, I’m Aaron McCaul. Is Doug Smith available?” “Yes, please come in.” Rita’s English was getting better, especially the standard phrases we use in our interpersonal communications. Aaron and a woman in her mid-thirties came into the room. “Doug, this is Miss Abby White. Abby, this is Mister Doug Smith. “It’s nice to meet you, Mister Smith.” “And it’s my pleasure to meet...

Opening Earth Part 3Chapter 9

I timed our departure from Timson so we would arrive at Mister Tam’s home on Halpern late in the morning. I did so for I knew we had to be at the Tam home before mid-afternoon to confirm our hotel reservations and we didn’t want to arrive too early. We arrived in the portion of his backyard that he had previously designated as our arrival area. It didn’t take the Tam family long to usher all of us into their home. Our party was too large for them to accommodate us in their six-bedroom house,...

“Those are the main points that Maribel and I discussed, Kevin, and here are your copies of my replies to the questions that her committee sent you over the past year or so,” I said. “Maribel said that for the next year or two, she will have future questions routed to you, and will expect me to reply through you. That will change once I have a Twixt System in place. Maribel and I did this first set of responses to her questions this way, so we could work out any problems between the two of...

For Alma Walcott it was all in a day’s job as a freelance stringer. She started her day on the phone by calling her normal news sources, but it was an unusually unproductive day for news. Then she called her contact in the Sheriff’s office. To ensure confidentiality, she never used her real name when dealing with someone she had registered with her paper as a confidential informant. She was always Sheila and her informant was either Bob or Babs. Her contacts were aware of this duplicity, but...

Opening Earth Part 2Chapter 8

From Vora it was only one hop to First Stop. Since we were now based on Slave World, we needed to consider a different planet as our point of arrival and departure. It didn’t make much sense to make three hops to and from Slave World when that would be our first stop. A planet along the route we used to travel between Slave World and Vora would be a better First Stop planet, as it was not commonly used as a rest stop by other D-Hoppers. I would discuss that with Sereine during our return to...

Opening Earth Part 2Chapter 4

Arriving at the Archer home, Doug rang the doorbell. “Good morning, I’m Doug Smith. This is my Administrative Assistant Cindy Smith, and my lawyer, Kendrick Jones. We have an appointment with Mrs. Archer. Is she available?” “Yes, sir. Mrs. Archer is expecting you. Please come in and I will show you to the sitting room, and let Mrs. Archer know you are here.” The sitting room was a nicely furnished and pleasant place to meet with someone. I decided that I would like to have a small meeting...

Kendrick and I were talking and he said, “The Judge outsmarted the media. The case number and parties associated with the case, have to be posted for at least one hour prior to a hearing. Normally, the case number and all of the main parties are listed in the posting. He listed the case number and your name followed by the phrase ‘and others’, which satisfied the requirement of the law. The media expected the Archer family’s name to be listed. Since it wasn’t, the majority of the media missed...

“Are you ready to go, Doug?” “Go where, Bill?” “To put in another order for vehicles. You were going to put me on your calendar for a vehicle shopping trip.” “Sorry, Bill, I forgot to tell Cindy. I can’t think of anyone I was to meet with today. Let me check my calendar  ah, yes, I have the rest of today clear; except for my regular tasks, which I can put off until later. Opening Earth Part 1Chapter 19

I was awakened at two in the morning by the siren alert of my comm unit. Someone had sent me a Twixt, and had flagged it as urgent. By the time I got to my comm unit, my eyes were open far enough for me to read the message. The message read, ‘Urgent you and Abby return to my office at once, Kevin Moore.’ I went down the hall and knocked on Abby’s bedroom door. When she said to come in, I opened the door, and said, “You need to get up and dress. We need to leave for Vora as soon as we can. I...

I needed to talk with Matt, Bill, and Sue about presenting my credentials and a few other things. “Matt? Doug, here.” “Hi, Doug, what’s up?” “I’ve finished the immediate things that I had to do. Do you have time to go over the arrangements for my presenting my credentials?” “Yes, when do you want to do it?” “I’m still at the ranch. We should be back at my home, shortly. Let’s meet there in two hours.” “See you then, Doug. Bye.” “Hello, Sue, Doug. Matt is going to be at my place in two...

Opening Earth Part 1Chapter 14

The media had gotten word that my entourage was staying at the Trinity Hotel in Cinnity. They had staked out the hotel’s ground-level entrance and the landing pad on the roof. The only way my people could come and go undetected was for Sereine to hop them in and out of the hotel. Since her ability to hop was limited by her recovery time, it was very inconvenient for all of my people. My bodyguards decided that the media representatives needed to be taught a lesson; namely, do not harass the...

My wives said I needed a new wardrobe for the office. Rita was the most insistent, and she had arranged for an appointment with a tailor at a men’s specialty store that Charlie had recommended. Charlie always looked good in the office while he had been with HS, so I accepted his suggestion. Rita knew exactly what I needed as office casual and my other wives agreed, but Charlie had said that whatever I got as off-the-shelf clothing had to be tailored to fit me properly. Cindy had some work to...

Earths CoreChapter 21 Earthrsquos Records

Within a sealed cavern, encompassed by blackness, sitting crossed legs, Zax prepared himself to tackle the fifth bottleneck of insight. Smell, touch, taste, sight ... These were the four bottlenecks of insight Zax already perceived and proceeded to comprehend. Zax was not oblivious. By now he could tell that the bottlenecks of insight have something to do with the five senses. The issue was with him unable to figure out if the remaining sense, sense of hearing, which will probably make him...

Our status meeting went well. Matt was making progress on getting a building permit for our temporary facilities and William was finalizing the supporting drawings. I let Matt know that we would have to install the utility equipment at what would be their permanent location, since Chairman Smart had bought me the equipment I would use for the Embassy Compound. I let him know I would get the equipment’s technical details for him when I had a chance and we would get with William to give him...

The Reyes and Rivera families remained at the clinic for the remainder of the day and well into the evening. Misty would periodically check her patients with her analyzer. By early evening, it was apparent that their condition was improving. After Misty informed the families, they returned home except for the mothers, who stayed with their sons for the night. They didn’t want a bed in which to sleep, so we provided them with a couple of our comfortable office chairs. They talked until the...

It took a bit longer than I had planned before we were ready to depart. Sereine hopped us to our first intermediary stop just as the sun was rising above the horizon. Three hops later, we arrived in the backyard of Mister Tam’s home. They had started to worry about whether we would get there for the wedding. Mister Tam said they had expected us to arrive three days ago so there would be plenty of time to make any final arrangements that may be necessary, and the wedding was scheduled for...

The four security people traveling with us were new to me. I had just a few minutes to introduce myself before we left Slave World, and I was having trouble recalling their names. Edgar said they were four of the better people that he’d had assigned to him by Kendrick. I would make a point of getting to know them better as I rested between hops. My wives woke me early the next morning. They enjoyed playing in bed yesterday morning, and were thinking of another romp in our bed. We had just started our usual sex play, when Carol made a mad dash for the bathroom. We could hear the sound of her retching, so Rita went to check on her. When Rita returned, she said, “It’s time for Carol to be checked out by Misty. I think she’s pregnant.” “Pregnant!” I exclaimed. “Didn’t she just finish her ovulation period? Matt and his wife Mary were to join my ladies and me for dinner at my home. We had to discuss the trading hop and to make plans for outfitting Matt and Mary for the trip to Vora. Mary turned out to be a moderately attractive redhead in her mid-forties, with the lithe muscular tone of an athlete. Betty had been in her element all day for she had been busy preparing our meal.
