July 1978

Monday was the start of Summer school. I had arranged with Andreas to start work at 1:00pm and work until 5:00pm, and on Tuesday and Thursday I’d go straight from work to Doctor Mercer’s, because she had made special arrangements for me. I had been looking forward to this class for months.

There were twelve of us in the class. Larry, of course; Ralph and Ken from the chess team; Napoleon McCallum, who was a jock, but also a great student; Beth Pater, one of the smartest girls in the school; four eighth-grade guys I didn’t know; Linda Hill, a Freshman girl I knew slightly; and Jack Dieter, a Freshman that I had a few classes with. The class was being taught by Mr. Herbers, a math teacher from the High School.

In the classroom were 6 brand new computers — three Apple ][s and three TRS-80s. Mr. Herbers started off the class explaining how to hook up and turn on the computers. He then explained about how they worked in simple terms. Then our first programming lesson began. We would be learning a programming language called BASIC. When it came time to do exercises, we were told to choose partners because we’d need to be two to a computer. Beth leaned over and asked if I would be her partner. I had thought Larry and I would work together, but I agreed.

Beth and I worked through the two exercises, each taking turns. That day we were assigned to an Apple, and the next we’d be on a TRS-80. Beth and I were usually done first, and our short little programs worked correctly. I enjoyed working with her. She and I had been friendly rivals for eighth and ninth grade. Spanish kept me from competing with her for best GPA.

The four hours flew by. Melanie was my ride to work, and she’d pick me up afterwards. As I expected, Jennifer joined us. I was happy to see Kim when we arrived — this was her first day. Jennifer, Melanie, and I ate lunch, and they left, promising they’d be back to pick me up at 5:00pm.

Andreas brought me into the office and told me that from now on, when I made my deliveries and pickups, I would bring everything here to the office and count the money, and then bundle it up and put it in a gym bag. I’d have to keep records in special code, which he explained. It was simple enough, just had to memorize some symbols that represented the places I made the pickups.

I’d be getting an extra $50 in cash every week to go with my paycheck. My normal pay was $2.75 an hour, so that cash was a lot of money. Andreas indicated that there was a lot more where that came from in the future. I knew I was getting in deep now, but I liked the money and I liked the thrill. I still didn’t know what the new tasks for the school year would be.

Jennifer and Melanie picked me up and dropped me at home. After dinner, I wrote in my journal, watched some TV and read. I was taking it easy this week.

The rest of the week was the same, except for Tuesday and Thursday when I saw Doctor Mercer. She was happy with my progress and suggested we go to one day a week through the rest of the Summer. On Wednesday, I called Joyce, and we arranged to get together in a couple weeks. I also called Anna, but we hadn’t been able to find a way to see each other. She was disappointed, but she wasn’t blaming me. On Thursday, Bethany called to confirm our date.

On Friday night, Jennifer and I had a date. A real date. Her mom drove us. We ate at Frisch’s and had dessert at Graeter’s. Jennifer suggested we should see if the apartment was available, but I declined. That was too risky in my book. We ended up going roller skating and had a good time.

I worked a full day on Saturday and Jennifer joined me for lunch. Things were going well between us, and I was confident we were doing well. She seemed happy, and I knew that I was. The afternoon went quickly, and I pedaled home. I quickly showered and dressed for my date with Bethany.

At 5:00pm, the Krajicks arrived. Bethany’s parents were going out to dinner at a different restaurant and seeing a different movie. We’d meet up afterwards for the ride home. Bethany would know where they were, so if there were any issues, she could find them.

In Mariemont, her parents dropped us at the restaurant. Bethany and I ate and chatted. I didn’t detect any nervousness. I was probably more nervous than she was. She wanted to be treated like a normal girl, but that meant walking arm-in-arm, putting my arm around her in the movie, and potentially copping a feel. And of course, kisses. But I didn’t think she meant that. I needed to find out.

“When you asked me to treat you like a normal girl, what did you mean? I’m asking because that could mean just about anything and I don’t want to overstep or push.”

“First off, I know all about you, remember?”

“Jennifer. She confessed.”

“So you know where I got my information. That’s good, I guess. So I told you to treat me like a normal girl knowing all of that.”

“Uhm, are you ready for that?”

“It’s been two years. I’m tired of being treated with kid gloves. I need to be normal. You can help me. I picked you for a reason.”

I had misread this completely. She had a plan.

“Are you going to fill me in? Or do I have to guess?”

“Just treat me like you would a girl on a date.”

I wondered about that. I decided to try a bit of humor.

“I can do that. But just so you know, I have lines I don’t cross.”

“Oh? Such as?”

“I don’t have sex on the first date.”

She laughed. She had a sparkle in her eye.

“Jennifer told me. She said I should ask about the second date.”

“You two certainly have been talking. She said the same thing to me.”

“We have.”

“OK. If you can joke with me about this, I feel a little better. I’ll do my best. You tell me if I’m pushing too far too fast, or if you are uncomfortable. Promise?”

“Yes. So you’ll do it, though?”

“Treat you like a normal girl? Sure.”

“No, have sex with me. Not tonight. But when I ask.”

“I would have to absolutely believe you are ready before that can happen.”

“Jennifer said that, too. I trust you. And I’m sure. I need to feel normal and until I can do that, I won’t be normal.”

“I think you’re pushing this awfully fast,” I said.

“I’ve been thinking about it for months. Do you know why I was so nervous at the dance? Because I was thinking about that. Doctor Mercer is concerned, but she knows what I want. My parents don’t.”

“Well, several things Doctor Mercer said make sense now. But I can’t be your boyfriend, Bethany. You understand that, right?”

“Yes. But what I need is someone to help me fix myself so I can have a boyfriend. And Jennifer told me she’s OK with this.”

“I’m sure she is. But she really should have talked to me before she promised me to you. Despite how it seems, I don’t have sex with just anyone or on a whim. I think it through and decide if it’s right or not. She knows that. Despite all the girls I’ve been with, it’s never been just a physical act that I can do lightly.”

“So you’re saying you won’t do it?”

“No, that’s not what I’m saying. I just don’t like Jennifer going behind my back to arrange for me to have sex with someone.”

“Let’s go see the movie. We have plenty of time to discuss this. Despite my joking with you, it’s not going to be this week. It might not even be next month. OK?”

I nodded, and we got up. I paid the bill and left the tip. As we walked out, I slipped my arm around her waist. She did the same and rested her head on my shoulder. Not a hint of nervousness. We walked over to the theater and I purchased two tickets for Foul Play starring Chevy Chase and Goldie Hawn.

I bought a bucket of popcorn for us to share and two small Cokes. We found seats about two-thirds of the way back. I put my arm around her with my hand on her shoulder and she nestled as close as the seat would allow. She sighed contentedly. The movie started, and we watched like that, with me occasionally rubbing her shoulder. Bethany was laughing at the movie, and somewhat to my surprise was laughing at a scene with Dudley Moore that had several sex jokes and sight gags.

About three-fourths of the way through the film, she whispered, “Are you going to kiss me goodnight?”

“Yes,” I said softly.

“Can I have one now?”

I turned my face to her, she stretched and kissed me on the lips, very softly. I did the same to her. She smiled and turned back to watch the rest of the movie. The credits rolled, and we walked out of the theater, our arms around each other. We checked and the movie her parents had gone to see had fifteen minutes to go. We went outside and sat on a bench.

“Thanks for kissing me, I liked it.”

“You’re welcome.”

“You’re being too nice. You didn’t try to kiss me again. Is that what you normally do?”

“No, I’m sorry. Come here.”

I pulled her into an embrace and kissed her softly on the lips several times. I kissed her again, and this time held my lips pressed against hers. I felt her lips part slightly, so I did the same and gently probed with my tongue. She sighed into my mouth and our tongues touched and gently danced around each other. I moved my hand to her waist and gently slid it up her side, just barely brushing the side of her breast. She didn’t flinch or break the kiss. I broke it to talk to her.

“That was nice,” I said.

“Thank you. You can’t kiss me like that when you kiss me goodnight, OK?”

“I wouldn’t dream of it!”

“But a nice soft kiss that lasts ten seconds or so would be perfect. It’ll bother my dad, but not so much that he’ll get angry.”

“I understand.”

We sat there until the movie let out and we went to meet her parents. Bethany and I held hands on the ride home. When they dropped me off, Bethany got out of the car.

“Steve, please kiss me goodnight.”

I gave her a soft, gentle kiss that lasted about ten seconds, just as requested.

“Good night, Bethany. Thanks for going out with me.”

“Good night, Steve. Thanks for asking me out. I’d like to go out again.”

“OK. Call me and we’ll set something up.”

I went into the house. I called Mary, Jennifer, and Melanie to confirm for the baseball game on Sunday. Melanie would be driving.

I wrote a couple of pages in my journal about the day’s events. I’d need to talk to Doctor Mercer, and I wanted as much on paper as I could get. I slept well and dreamt of Bethany.

Sunday, July 16th was the Reds’ game. The girls arrived about 10:30am for the drive to Riverfront Stadium. The Reds were facing the Mets; I hated all the New York sports teams, and the Mets were no exception. Ever since the fight between Pete Rose and Bud Harrelson during the 1973 NLCS, I had an extra-special hatred for them. The Mets had already dropped the first two games, and I hoped the Reds could do a clean sweep of this 3-day series.

Our seats were Loge Boxes, in the first row of the upper deck about halfway down the third base line. We found our seats and settled in. I was wearing shorts, a t-shirt and my beat-up Reds’ cap. The girls were all wearing shorts and t-shirts, but only Melanie was wearing a cap. All three of them had sunglasses. I sat between Jennifer and Melanie, and Mary sat on Melanie’s other side.

Tom Hume was on the mound for the Reds. It didn’t take long for the Big Red Machine to kick into gear. They scored five runs in the first inning, and Pete Rose extended his hitting streak to 29 consecutive games. Even though Hume wasn’t having a good year so far with a 3-9 record, he was pitching well today and I was pretty confident in a five-run lead.

The girls attracted a lot of attention from the guys around us. One guy who looked to be around twenty-five asked me which one was my girlfriend.

Before I could answer, Melanie, with a huge grin on her face, said, “I guess you could say all of us!”

The guy just shook his head in disbelief.

Melanie, ever the troublemaker, continued, “In fact, he’s had sex with all of us!”

“Melanie, please!” I whispered urgently.

“This kid? If that’s true, by the looks of him, you need a real man.”

Now I knew it was trouble. That was something none of the girls would be willing to let slide. I knew it wouldn’t do any good to try to prevent them from teasing these guys.

“Well,” Jennifer smirked. “if you can give a girl nine orgasms in a single session, then you might be able to compete with him.”

“Bullshit!”

“Oh no, it’s true. He’s that good,” Mary said.

“Yeah, but there’s three of you!”

“He’s had me and another girl at the same time,” Melanie said, then kissed me on the cheek.

A WellLived Life Book 9 AnalaChapter 36 Corrections

May, 1984, Chicago, Illinois Bethany and I said our goodbyes and I walked her out to her car. We kissed before she got into her car, and after she drove off, and I went back inside. My housemates were filtering out, along with my friends, and the house would soon be empty. I let Kara and Jackie know that I was going to pick up Anala. They disappeared together, and I headed out to my car to drive to Bridgeport. Other than a brief greeting, and a question about her final project, Anala and I...

Trust Built Through Correction

Trust is a word that gets tossed around a lot in the context of DS relationships but it's such an intangible and there is no set process in how to build or strengthen it. It can take ages to build and seconds to destroy. You know it when you have it, or when you've lost it but how did you get to that point? This is a story of how a bond of trust was strengthened following an emotional session of correction. They had gone through the usual steps of chatting online and felt that there was enough...

The First Book of the Merciful NunChapter 13 SelfCorrection

Her relief was short-lived as the Monsignor took a knout from a drawer in his desk and offered it to her. "This is what you will use to purge yourself of any sins you may feel you have committed, Sister. Here it replaces confession; when you believe you have purged yourself sufficiently, you are absolved of the sins you have remembered, just as if you had confessed them and performed the penance set by the priest," he said. She took the whip and looked at. She had never seen its like...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 7 SakurakoChapter 57 Land of the Rising Sun Part III

June 23, 1994, Oguni, Yamagata Prefecture, Japan My first week in Japan flew by, and a routine developed. Sakurako would wake me; I’d exercise and run, then shower and have breakfast, and share tea with Sakurako. After breakfast, I’d meditate, and then have my training session. After lunch, I’d work in the garden, or, as I had this day, wash the floors in the house. Hiroshi would accompany me back to the cottage and we’d talk while I washed up and dressed for dinner. After dinner, I’d spend...

Spoiled Bitch Course Correction

When Cadence woke up, she was in a concrete room. It measured about ten metres by five metres, the floor was rough and cold, and it was most certainly not where she had gone to sleep. There was only one entrance - an ominously heavy looking steel door - and there were no windows, only a grating in the floor and an air vent in the ceiling. The words "SPOILED BITCH" had been painted sloppily on one wall in red paint. Most concerning, Cadence was naked. There was a thin metal collar...

The Life Plan Correction

In a world where finding personal purpose and success is guaranteed, how do people see those who — unsatisfied by everything — defy the odds to fail? With compassion and empathy of course. Seeing day-to-day suffering can only hurt an otherwise satisfied mind, can only do damage to a fragile psyche. Even for those who don't feel sorry for the social dropouts who can't find purpose, they can and do feel the pain of their fellow contributing citizens when those good citizens are harmed by the idea...

October, 1984, Chicago, Illinois When I woke up Monday morning, I carefully disentangled myself from Kara’s embrace and quietly dressed for my morning run. A WellLived Life Book 4 BethanyChapter 20 Opening Midgame Endgame

September 1980, Milford, Ohio On Monday, Mrs. Brewer, the chemistry teacher, assigned lab partners. I sighed when I heard the names called. My partner for chemistry for the semester was going to be Kara Blanchard. She was gorgeous and had a great body. She was also a Bible thumper. I hadn’t really had any interaction with her, but knew her by reputation. I discovered that she also knew about me. Kara gave him a light hug and kissed his cheek. His eyes twinkled and Jessica rolled hers. July, 1983, Chicago, Illinois I woke up early on the First of July, because my body clock was still set to Swedish time. The flight back had been long but uneventful, and I was happy that the businessman in the seat next to me hadn’t wanted to talk. June 1977 When I got home, I grabbed a Coke and some chips and went right to my room. I didn’t think I could deal with my parents or Jeff or Stephanie. I just needed to be by myself. That wouldn’t seem odd to anyone, because I often went to my room to read. In addition, I now had the TV I’d received for my birthday. I flipped it on to WXIX Channel 19 and reruns of Gilligan’s Island and Green Acres played in the background while I read. I had to get my mind clear for the final exams that...

October 1982, Chicago, Illinois The drive back to Chicago was as uneventful as usual, and I arrived at the apartment just before 6:00pm. When I arrived, Elyse and Stephie were sitting on the couch and Jackie was sitting on the loveseat. Stephie hopped up as I opened the door and greeted me with a hug and a kiss. “Hi, Peaches!” I said. “Glad you’re home, Yankee!” “Hi, Steve,” Elyse and Jackie both said. “Hey,” I replied. “How was the weekend?” “Well, it was just Kurt with me, Stephie,...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 3 JessicaChapter 52 Lifestyle Choices

June 11, 1989, Chicago, Illinois It was just after 3:00am when I kissed Trish goodbye. She’d been an enthusiastic, energetic, and adventurous lover. We’d done just about anything either of us could think of, though her breasts weren’t large enough for a tit-fuck. The last time had been in the shower where we’d ostensibly gone to clean up afterwards, but instead I ended up taking her from behind as she leaned against the wall of the shower. “I think I’ll have you again, Steve Adams,” she...

A WellLived Life Book 1 BirgitChapter 38 Freshman Year Ends

May 1978 The first couple of weeks in May were busy with school, work, and friends. Except for Becky, I didn’t even have any dates. But I was OK with that. Well, almost OK. I wanted to see Anna, but it likely wasn’t going to happen until school was out. I had tutoring sessions with Melanie, but she still wouldn’t talk to me about anything other than Spanish. Barely a hello. I was grateful for the tutoring, but it was maddening seeing my friend this way. I hoped someday she could understand...

A WellLived Life Book 6 Kara IChapter 44 Spring Break 1982 Part I

March, 1982, Milford, Ohio As I drove along I-65, I thought about what Stephanie had asked for and what Bethany had said without even knowing about the request. Of course, because Bethany and I were so in tune, she might have actually had an idea that I was struggling with getting involved with my sister again. I kept turning it over and over in my mind and I kept coming to the same conclusion — that I shouldn’t do it. I was torn between doing what Stephanie wanted and doing what Kara and...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 6 SamanthaChapter 21 Georg and Maria

September 7, 1992, Chicago, Illinois “That went reasonably well,” Michelle said when her parents drove off. “There were a few times I thought my expression would give away something I shouldn’t. You were messing with me, weren’t you?” She grabbed both my hands and smiled, “I was telling the truth, in my own way. Thank you!” She leaned forward and kissed my cheek. “So, what’s left?” I asked. “To visit UofC tomorrow and formally withdraw from classes. To spend some time with you and your...

A WellLived Life Book 6 Kara IChapter 14 A Southern Belle a Surprise Proposal two Cheerleaders an Old Flame and a Girl Back Home Part I

October 1981, Chicago, Illinois I arrived back at the apartment just before 10:00pm and saw the address for the party. I decided I wasn’t particularly interested in going so I put on some music, poured myself a glass of wine, and started reading more about Russia. I was alternating between the history and culture book and the Communist Party book, decided on the history and culture book for this time. I didn’t get much reading done because I was thinking about Tatyana, which led me to...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 9 KamiChapter 38 And Sometimes It Stinks To Be Big

January 23, 1996, Chicago, Illinois “Father, bless!” I said, greeting Father Basil with upturned palms. “Bless you, Stephen,” he said as I kissed his hand. The waiter showed us to a quiet table along the wall of Roditys in Greektown. He took our drink orders and was back quickly. We placed our food orders right away and he left to put them in with the kitchen. “I’m not quite sure how to address this, so I’m just going to ask you bluntly. Are you the father of Michelle’s baby?” I shook my...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 8 NIKAChapter 68 The Rules

June 29, 1995, Chicago, Illinois On Thursday, I finally had lunch with Melissa again, something I hadn’t been looking forward to. Much like with Cèlia, Melissa and I had passed an inflection point and I was left with sub-optimal paths forward. I’d been struggling with the possible solutions, and all of them had pitfalls. When I walked into Takumi, I had something of a plan. Whether it was good or not would only be known once everything played out. “I spoke to my wives,” I said after we’d...

A WellLived Life 3 Book 1 SuzanneChapter 73 Hypothetical Questions

December 5, 2000, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota “I had a good time last night,” I said. “I was surprised you invited a friend!” Mary laughed as we walked into the exam room, “Naomi had a good time as well. You know what a Resident’s life is like.” I nodded, “No social life.” “Exactly. You guys seemed to hit it off pretty well.” “Yes, but I’m not here for that!” “You’re everywhere for that, and you know it!” I couldn’t help but laugh. “Let’s just say that you hit the sweet spot -...

A WellLived Life Book 3 PiaChapter 25 The Puzzle and the Cat Part II

March 1980, Hovås/Göteborg, Sweden I woke early as usual, but just enjoyed being in bed with Katt. When she woke, she hopped out of bed and pulled a robe out of her closet and handed it to me. “There’s a spare toothbrush in the bathroom. Go have your shower, then we’ll have breakfast after I have my shower.” I quickly showered and brushed my teeth, and went back to Katt’s room. She went to shower and came back a few minutes later. She dressed, and I got a very good look at her sexy body...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 10 BridgetChapter 74 A Whimper Not A Bang

April 5, 1997, Chicago, Illinois “You missed cuddles this morning!” Birgit said accusingly when I walked into the house about 9:30am. “I know, Pumpkin, but I had a work emergency and had to go see Aunt Joyce and Grandpa A.” “And now we have to get ready for karate!” “I know. We’ll have some family time this afternoon. I don’t have any plans.” “Good!” I hugged her and the rest of the kids, then went to find Kara. We hugged and kissed, and went straight upstairs to get ready for...

September 3, 1989, Chicago, Illinois “Good morning, Sensei,” I said, bowing to Sensei Jim. “Good morning!” he said waving me to a chair in his office. “How was your trip?” I asked. “Enlightening. I spent most of my time acting as a manservant to Sensei Robert and Sensei Hiro.” “He who will lead, must first serve,” I said. “Someday, I’m going to send you to Sensei Hiro, should he live long enough. You understand.” “Does that mean you are now 6th Dan?” I...

October 29, 2000, Chicago, Illinois Birgit followed me as far as the stairs, then scooted upstairs when I went to the front door and opened it. “Hi!” Sophie said. “Hi!” I replied and held the door open so she could come into the house. I closed the door behind her then led her to my study where I waited until she went in, and then walked in, closing the door behind me. I nodded to one of the wingback chairs, she sat down in one, and I sat down in the other. “Is something wrong?” she...

A WellLived Life Book 8 StephieChapter 61 Anala Part II

August, 1983, Chicago, Illinois I walked in the near 90°F heat to Carla’s place. I was grateful that the humidity of the morning had dropped significantly; otherwise the heat would have been unbearable. By the time I walked up the steps to the apartment over the photography studio and knocked on her door, I had broken into a light sweat. Carla answered almost immediately and invited me inside her studio apartment. The air was moderately cool, and the window air conditioner was running full...

A WellLived Life Book 7 Kara IIChapter 21 He Will Tell Thee What Thou Shalt Do

July 1982, Milford, Ohio On Tuesday morning, I kissed Kara goodbye and headed to my parents’ house for my usual morning routine with my little sister. She was happy that I could spend the morning with her and asked to take a walk, so we weren’t in the house with my mom. “Let me guess — this walk will end in the clearing,” I said with a smile. “Yes,” she said, taking my hand as we walked down Overlook towards Klondyke. As usual, we turned around and walked back, taking the path to the...

March 13, 1994, Chicago, Illinois “Hi, Steve!” Ailea said when she opened the door. “Hi,” I replied, accepting the offered hug. There was no touching of lips, just of cheeks, and I wondered if I’d misread her intentions at her birthday lunch, or if, perhaps, she detected my reluctance to return the offered affection. “Lunch is ready, so go ahead and sit. I’ll bring it in from the kitchen.” I went to the low table, sat down, and a minute later, Ailea brought miso soup and sushi, our usual...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 10 BridgetChapter 72 An Explosive Discovery

April 3, 1997, Dallas, Texas “Remember what I said about drinking too much,” I said, as I poured bourbon into three cups. We’d stopped at a liquor store, bought a bottle of Blanton’s, and then returned to the small suite I’d reserved at the Westin. Deborah’s room was down the hall, and Krissy’s was two floors below. Krissy’s comment had caught me a bit off guard, but I hadn’t reacted visibly. I didn’t know her quite well enough to know if she’d been teasing with Deborah, so I was being...

March 28, 1991, Chicago, Illinois “This day belongs to you, Kara!” I said when the three of us woke on Thursday morning. “Happy birthday!” Jessica said. “Thanks,” Kara replied happily. “I think I’d like an amazing birthday fuck from our husband, and then a nice loving shower with my wife!” Kara said. “Do we have enough time?” I asked. Jessica giggled, “I set the alarm for thirty minutes earlier!” “Then let’s not waste any of it!” I said pulling Kara to me. Kara’s squeals as I plunged...

September 1, 1987, Chicago, Illinois “I heard that you have some kind of plan to help Ed,” I said to Connie. “There’s no plan,” she replied. “A witness who saw the shopkeeper alive after Ed left came forward.” That sounded convenient, and I wondered if the witness was real or someone that Anthony had put forward to solve the problem. Certainly, the videotape was real, because I couldn’t imagine how Anthony could have faked that, but the witness? Who knew? “So is he being released? Or is...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 10 BridgetChapter 100 A Full Circle

August 17, 1997, Chicago, Illinois We finished lunch and Marissa and the younger kids went to play, but Natalie sat with the adults to talk, with coffee, tea, or soft drinks. The Sarcus were very comfortable, but the Heaths were still struggling. But, vitally, they hadn’t left and hadn’t insisted Natalie leave the group. “Can you explain how you developed this attitude and approach?” Chris asked. I nodded, “It started when I was just a bit younger than Natalie. My mom was a total control...

A WellLived Life Book 3 PiaChapter 6 A Tale of Three Cities Part III

July 1979 — Falkenberg, Sweden On Friday, when I got back from my run, Pam was in her bra and panties again. I whistled at her, she giggled, then finished dressing. I showered, and we went to breakfast and finished up our last day. Once class was done, we were pretty much free. On Saturday, we’d have several optional activities and then on Sunday we’d head back to our host families. After dinner on Friday, I took Pam’s hand and we walked towards the river. It was quiet and peaceful, and...

A WellLived Life Book 3 PiaChapter 38 Homeward Bound

July 1980, Over the North Atlantic We reached cruising altitude, and I settled back to read my book. Pam raised the armrest between us, snuggled close to me and read as well. The cabin crew offered drinks, and I had my first Coke in a year! Meal service began about an hour and a half into the flight. After the cabin crew picked up the trays and offered drinks again, they passed once more, offering headsets for the movie. Trevor and Maria took them, but Pam and I didn’t, instead we turned on...

July 8, 1997, Chicago, Illinois “Is it really that surprising?” Leah asked. “I suppose not,” I replied. “I just didn’t read too much into the kiss on the cheek.” “I didn’t think it was a good idea to kiss you on the lips with all those people around, because I had no idea who they were or what they would think. You were VERY careful with our dance, so I kind of followed your lead.” Which showed very mature thinking on her part. Both of these girls were exactly the kind of students I...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 7 SakurakoChapter 12 House Calls

November 8, 1993, Chicago, Illinois A dark fog swirled before my eyes as I tried to take stock. My head hurt, badly. I felt something on my face and realized, dimly, it was an oxygen mask. My right hand was uncomfortable and I recognized the feeling of an IV and pulse-oximeter. My left arm ached fiercely. On my chest I felt the pads and wires of an EKG. I didn’t feel anything else wrong as I continued taking inventory. I tried to open my eyes, but the fog didn’t clear. I tried to speak, but...

A WellLived Life Book 8 StephieChapter 51 Friends and Neighbors Part I

August, 1983, Chicago, Illinois In the morning Anala and I ran as we had the previous time, then showered together, carefully washing each other’s bodies in an intimate but non-sexual way. After our shower we went to the kitchen and I made breakfast and we sat down to eat. “Steve, may I make a suggestion?” she asked. “Sure.” “Broaden your circle of friends. Other than me, all of you are white, nominally Christian, 20-year-old Americans. And you don’t invite me to your Sunday...

March 1979 Monday was back to the normal routine of school. Debbie Vaughn, who lived just down the street, would turn fourteen on March 16th and invited me to her birthday party. And Donna Woody, who lived just down the street in the other direction, would turn fourteen on March 20th. She had made it clear what she wanted for her birthday, and in...

He did, and I sat in the usual chair across from him. “She has a real problem, you know that, right?” he asked. “I do. I took him from his mom and he hugged me tightly. “Is Jesse with his moms?” Bethany asked. “Yes. Otherwise, smooth sailing. It was driving the other direction that was a...
