At 5.30pm a loud knock on her door again revealed a lovely bunch of roses at her peephole. Opening the door Fred was holding a lovely mixed bunch of 24 different coloured roses. “OK then lets go for an early dinner then we can enjoy the evening view from here.” Fred agreed.
Walking down to the French Bistro, they enjoyed an early evening meal with Helena eating twice the amount than Fred.
Over the meal they just generally chit chat about anything other than is work and Helena’s concerns. Finishing their meal they returned to Helena flat.
Sitting on the balcony Helena asked Fred “What would you do, as Fred, if you found out that someone had purchased a property and leased it out to deserving tenants and lived off the income, however the source of the funds could be questionable?” she asked.
Fred thinking about the question answered slowly” Well if it in a legal situation then there is no problem with what you described.”
Helena asked “What would policeman Fred do?”
“I would have to fully investigate and if any proven crime occurred than we would have to take to the DPP.” He replied. “Why?.”
“OK lets put some more information into the problem, The person was 17 then married a 32 year old in an arranged marriage, he came home with various amounts of funds, but would never tell her how it was obtained. In those days fifty years ago females did just obey their men folk. She used the money to buy homes to rent out to others living off the income. He died 30 years ago his funding stopped and she has continued to live the same way. How does that change either Private or Policeman Fred?”
Thinking for a few minutes.
Fred replied. “If the funding dried up over 30 years ago and there is no written records of where the monies came from then the seven year statute of limitation comes into play. Certainly if the person died we cannot do anything. But if the current situation means some people in need are being helped. Then it has come full circle. Might it be obtained illegally, with no proof and then used for good, Private Fred would be very happy. Policeman Fred has no case. Does that answer your concerns?”
‘Yes thank you. Now what do you wish to discuss with me that needed us to be together? Helena asked changing subjects, awaiting Harry’s input before she decides to show him the letters from Mrs Romano.
Fred went very quite. Head down as if thinking how do I say what I am about to say. Reaching for her hand Fred started “First off I do really love you and that’s why I would like your help. Well I know why they place investigations on the first detective on the scene. The investigation has revealed quite a lot of bad policemen some really dirty but some in circumstances of personal need. It has not been easy to sort out the full picture but I have completed it now. Graphing and compiling all the verbal and written information. In the process I have made quite a few of enemy’s as well as major distrust within the force. I have reasoned that where ever I go in the force I would not be trusted due to finding the amount of dirt there was out there. The Commissioner has offered me any position anywhere in the state other that the South East corner, That is here or Brisbane. I could also be seconded to the Australian Police Force to remove me from this state influence. Basically I have to move from here to out west or into another force. There is no trusted career here for me. Because I really love you and want to spent the rest of my life with you I would like your input please.”
“Is there a third option?” Helena queried.
“Yes resign from the force, I have thought about it but then I would have to find a job one to support us?” he replied softly.
“Support we do not need with my Lotto winnings, or did you forget?” Replied Helena.
“Yes and No. That is your money not ours.” He commented.
