“No, Dad, you can’t!” she told him. “Dad, you’re sitting here drinking and playing with a gun. You’re not eating and you’re not taking care of yourself. I’m not stupid, I know what’s going on. “Look, I don’t know the whole story, but I can tell you this, Christmas is one of the prime seasons for suicide. Now, I’m not saying that your grandfather would do that, but they seem nervous, so we’re going over there.”

“He just lost his wife, and he’s lonely. Like I said, he’s depressed, and he’s not thinking too straight just now. We pick him up and take him home, and keep an eye on him for a bit, okay. It’ll probably blow over,” he said with a shrug.
When the trio pulled into the driveway, they found the front door held open by Ronnie. In a low voice, she explained what was happening. Directing her husband to the dining room, she took the kids upstairs to help pack.
Frank settled into a dining room chair opposite from Sue, next to Jim. The older man was slumped over the table, crying incoherently. He reached across the table to hold Sue’s hand; she, too, was crying. Frank took the keys to the gun cabinet from Jim’s hand. Ten minutes later, his wife and the teens lugged several suitcases down the stairs. Standing, he helped Jim to his feet, and he and Sue guided him to the Taurus. Jim was placed in the back. “Okay, then, some ground rules. Somebody stays in the house with Jim all the time. He goes out, somebody goes with him. No exceptions! “You got any guns around here?” asked Frank.
