The whole time the guy was talking to Harriet he was checking me out. Everyone noticed.
“You should flash the guy your boobs, Harriet.” Denise said. “You’re the one shopping for shoes, not Sue.”

“Maybe we should just leave.” I said.

Just then the guy came out from the back carrying four boxes. Two of them were the red shoes that Harriet was looking at but in different sizes. The other two boxes were other models of shoe.
“Try these on.” the salesman said to Harriet.
Harriet took a seat and the guy slipped off the sneakers that Harriet was wearing then the socks. The way he did so was very gentle and dare I say, loving. I suppose the guy got his jollies selling shoes to ladies. Whatever. At least he was paying attention to Harriet.
Harriet tried on the size seven and stood up trying to walk.
“No.” she said. “I think these are little small.”
“Their sizes do run a bit smaller. That is why I brought out a size seven and a half. Here try these.”
“What do you gals think?” Harriet asked as she modeled the shoes for us walking up and down the shoe racks.
“They look hot.” Denise said. Brenda and I echoed Denise’s sentiments.
“I took the liberty of bringing something else you might like.” the salesman told Harriet. Then he took out a pair of platform sandals. It looked like the heel was even bigger than the stilettos that Harriet was wearing. She put them on and walked around a bit awkwardly.
“These are ... different.” she said.
“They’ll add five and half inches to your height.” the salesman said. He was right. Harriet was almost my height now.
“Wow. I don’t know. They’re not easy to walk in.”

The guy pulled out a pair of sparkly gold heels.
“That wasn’t what I was looking for but I’ll try them. They might look good in a party dress.” Harriet said.
“Or in nothing.” the poor salesman said.

“I thought those were five and half inches.”
“But these are bigger shoes so bigger heels.”
“Oh.” I said, dumbfounded. He could have been BS’ing me but it sounded plausible.
“Try ‘em on.” my friends egged me. It seems I’m a big pushover and let my friends talk me into all sorts of things. I ended up walking around wearing the size fifteen, with the six and a half inch wooden heel, sandals.

Maybe half the order wouldn’t have been messed up if he payed more attention to what we were saying. But he apologized and we all got a free desert and I got half off of my meal.
