Karen didn't seem at all surprised or upset by my words, as I had expected her to almost explode with anger, but nothing more was said or done by either of us until Melanie walked in a short while later.
"Hey guys. You both look like you had a rough night."
"A rough night? No. We were just talking. And you're certainly over early."
"Well frankly I wish I could have come over last night."
"Problems at home?"
"Yeah. Mom asked me to look after the baby so she and Scott could go out for a little while, and by the time they got back I was exhausted. I mean, he just kept on crying and crying, and he wouldn't eat anything that Mom left for him."
Melanie did appear worn out, after having experienced first hand what it's like to take care of a new born baby, and so I now had a faint glimmer of hope that she had changed her mind about ever having one herself.
