A knock at the door the awakened sean and Brooke from their sleep. Sean went to the main entrance of the suite of apartments. He opened the heavy door and saw a uniformed footman.
“Sir, I’ve been instructed to inform you that you have only a couple of units to get ready for this evening’s State Dinner and to inform you that it is a formal affair. If you require any assistance, please do not hesitate to ask. I am entirely at your disposal.”
“Thank you for waking us. We will be ready on time.”
“My Pleasure, sir.” The footman turned and went back to his duties.
While they had slept, their things had been delivered to the suite. Their baggage was in the sitting area. They dressed for the State Dinner. Sean was moody and a bit upset. Why would the emperor schedule a formal event on their first day? He guessed this was an attempt to make a political statement of some kind, a way to prove that the emperor was in charge. He was keeping Sean and Brooke defensive and making them feel on guard. They found that their formal attire was pressed and ready to wear. Sean had a Tuxedo that he wore to charity and formal events, he hated it, but he looked terrific. It was an Armani, and it was uniquely tailored for him. It was Black and had a cumberbund emerald green cumberbund and bowtie. Brook had on a beautiful Emerald green gown by Oscar De La Renta, with white opera gloves and an emerald and diamond necklace. She wore her hair up. She was stunning.
Soon there was another knock at the suite’s door. Sean answered and told the protocol officer that they were ready. They were escorted to the Emperor’s Offical Dining Hall. Sean and Brooke were informed they must wait until they were announced, and then they could proceed through the receiving line and then take up their place and await His Imperial Majesty, The Emperor.
They were announced as The Honorable Ambassador from Earth, and his wife, Mr. and Mrs. Sean W. Mallory. The name was spoken in English, but it was pronounced impeccably precise. Sean took Brooke’s arm and escorted her into the room, and made their way through the gauntlet that was the receiving line. The Protocol Officer had informed them of the procedure for this occasion. Since this was a formal event, they should not initiate any personal contact. Instead, the proper greeting, performed by a slight nod and a carefully achieved neutral expression and then carry on to the next in line. This, of course, would differ for the Emperor himself. When presented to His Majesty, one was to look down and then bow low from the waist and await the emperor’s tap on the shoulder. You would arise and stand ramrod until he extended a hand in greeting if this happened ( which is was nearly guaranteed at a formal affair); one would allow the emperor to grasp your forearm and then give a curt nod and thank him for the invitation. This was for males. For Brooke, the procedure differed by performing a curtsy and then put out an outstretched right hand. The emperor would then kiss her proffered hand.
Sean and Brooke were sat at the dining table near the emperor with Brooke to sean’s left and Sean on the emperor’s righthand side. Sean was introduced to the Lady Baroness A’caz. She introduced herself as being related to J’hon. She informed Sean that she would like to have a more informal introduction later after settling more comfortably.
The assembled guests were very interested in everything on Earth. They asked all sorts of questions, and Sean spent the evening answering them, many were either business or technology related, and quite a few were also directed towards Brooke. Hers mainly revolved around cultural and day-to-day living. Of course, most of the questions she received were about her pregnancy and how she handled space travel and the like while being in such a delicate state. She answered them all with grace and confidence and pretended not to be bothered by some more impolite and more personal questions.
The emperor made dinner conversation, and he had a great deal of charm and was quite eager to find out as much about this new planet and its resources as the rest of the assembled guests were. Many of whom were from industry and commerce backgrounds.
Sean noticed that the Council of Chairs were all represented here again. He saw many others were nobles like the Baroness, seated next to him, and others seemed to be functionaries and government officials. Sean also noticed that on the emperor’s right-hand side was the Crown Prince R’Yclif. He was uncharacteristically quiet and was withdrawn. Sean decided not to engage him feeling R’Yclif might be slightly unhappy about having to be here instead of having some personal time after such a long time away. Sean tried to remember he was now representing the entire planet Earth, and he could not cause reasons for dislike or prejudice.
