The days passed, and Sean attended more meetings than he ever had as CEO of LDC/Whitten. Nothing of significance was achieved from the sessions. Most were just time and energy drains. Sean was more accustomed to meetings in a corporate setting, where there was a specific reason for any meeting. The aim was to solve any problem as quickly and as painless as possible. He quickly became disillusioned with the process in which governments worked.
Sean attended the League of Free Systems hearing on humanitarian aid to those suffering the most from the disastrous Ulster Wars. Many systems and independent planets, along with numerous planets on both sides, had made claims of damage and famine or other forms of loss from both The Central Worlds and Ulster system. There were also claims of war crimes and unwarranted attacks on civilian population centers. The list of offenses took up 20 double-sided pages, single-spaced.
Sean was allowed into the meeting for a couple of reasons. First, because he was the Ambassador of Earth and represented Terra as a provisional delegate. Secondly, the League of Free Systems President wanted to have a one on one meeting with him, in an unofficial capacity, to determine what he might be able to gain from Terra’s inclusion into the body.
The proceedings were lengthy and tedious, and Sean knew that the Emperor of the Central worlds with the G’Acrax as its capital was new to the throne.
Sean didn’t know what he could do about most offenses, but there were many issues he could address. One of the most significant issues was food shortages and the need for clean water. Earth still produced a surplus of grain. Due in part to technological increases and improvements in crop production. Through his company, he could ship grains and foodstuffs, and possibly livestock, or at least fertilized embryos to introduce earth cattle to The Central Worlds. He could also address the water issue. There were plenty of ice asteroids that could be recovered and be turned into clean drinking water. Many of the farm worlds within the Central Worlds had been ravished by both sides during the war. The enemy had scavenged what food they could to feed their troops and then left the soil unfit for production. This action was taken in an attempt to starve the Central Worlds. Of course, the Central Worlds armies need food as well, and in time of war looting and plundering was not limited to the bad guys, their armies need to eat. They at least paid for the food and some of the damage done, but inflation had made those payments little more than a tiny fraction of the real cost of production. This was a system-wide problem. Food was scarce, and the cost to rebuild and restart output was high.
The emperor addressed the cost issue by giving low-cost, short-term loans to the non-corp farmers. The corporate farms and the Mega-Corps who owned them would be receiving subsidies and price guarantees to keep the losses to a minimum. Sean thought this practice was doomed to failure. He believed it was probably a good idea in the short term but was afraid it would become an ongoing practice kept in place by the Council of Chairs. He figured, at present, it wasn’t any of his concern. He would make plans to bring what help he could as soon as he could communicate with his people on Earth. He had set up a radio relay that could let him speak to his Board of Directors and his company’s acting CEO. This was the only concession he was able to obtain before joining this mission. The radio was an encrypted FTL direct link to his corporate headquarters. He had finally had a chance to set it up on this end, and it was fully functional and ready back in Houston.
