While evaluating my sanity, and the need to consider asking Steve to have me checked out, I felt something pulling toward the veil where the girl and her family were. It was now time to release the shield if the girl even really exists.
The flow of energy to the shield around the girl did stop, and that energy I knew was real. Right before my eyes, the veil shimmered, and then I saw what remained of their home that someone had excavated who knows how many decades ago. Carved into the exposed wall, I saw the images of the girl and her twin brother. Both were holding the hands of a carving of me. They appeared to be thanking me.
“Hey, mister,” a boy, or maybe a girl, hard to tell by the voice and loose, ratty clothes. “If I hadn’t seen that before, I would turn you into the cops for defacing a landmark. Does look a lot like you, though.”

I got it on my back and took the small girl back as I headed away from where the girl with the tail made everyone leave with her telepathic broadcast. I had no place in mind since I didn’t even know where I was or what was around me.
One kid began directing us through the woods, down gravel roads, under the highway, to get to an office complex on the fringes of town.
Someone is maintaining the outside, but it doesn’t look like anyone has been working here in years.
Around back, the kid used a key to open an access panel, push in a code, and then put their hand on a reader. The door next to it clicked and opened. They closed the access panel door and led us inside.
Lights? Check. Air Conditioning? Check. Running water? Check. Working bathrooms? Check. Showers? Check. Any signs of building use? Nope.
After they all used the bathroom, the kid led us through a maze of halls to end up in what looked to be the cafeteria. A few seconds with an access panel and the door to the kitchen area opened. Like the kid owned the place, which they might, they went through well-stocked refrigerators pulling out large pans of pre-prepared foods. A quick look at the gallons of milk in the fridge showed someone came here regularly to replace everything with fresh foods. Once three convection ovens were working to heat the pans of food, the kid led us down other hallways to end outside a door. He knocked on it, which seemed odd given the empty building, before using an access panel to unlock the door.
Inside I saw neat stacks of a full change of clothes, including shoes, on the floor that matched the number of kids. I quick count of those with panties, and a few bras, confirmed the first one to talk to me was a girl. What I didn’t expect was the kid that let us in here going into a locker to pull out a set of clothes with Darren written on a piece of paper on top.
“No one else here is this big, so you must be the person that these clothes belong. The girl I handed the smaller one to earlier started to strip and said, “Everyone. It has been a while since we could go to the city to get us new clothes, soap, or anything else. We have running water here and clean clothes. Strip everything off and throw it away. I mean everything. Except for this new guy, we’ve all everything the others have and how it all goes together. Not that any of us are going to do that with each other.”
To me, she said I didn’t have to toss my clothes since they looked in good shape for now.
