Down in engineering, Chief Engineer Samantha Wayne looked at the damage report and them the schematics and back at her engineering team. The readings were still saying the same thing.
"Look, I don't care what the diagnostic says. The shield generators should have resisted the four hits. However, for some reason they were only putting out ten percent of the power, and the diagnostic was saying they were kicking out one hundred percent. Therefore, we have one of two problems here. One is that there is a diagnostic error on the system queries, and not all the shield generators were spinning up to full power; or two, the ship was sabotaged, somehow. Therefore, we are going to break down into three teams. I will take team one and track down the power lines and see if we have a short somewhere. Tanya, I want you to take team two, and check all the generators. If the problem is there, we need to find it and fix it right away."
Tanya Kandinsky looked up from her diagnostic board and brushed her long black hair over her shoulder, and replied, "Ma'am, that's four hundred generators."
"Just concentrate on the mid-ship portside generators. If there's a problem, it's going to be in that area. There are only fifty of them. Then work your way back to the power supply. Also, pin your hair up. It's going to be downright dirty work."
Looking over the assembled crew personnel, she spotted William O'Neil reading one of the diagnostic panels, and said to him, "William, I want you to pick four or five people, and get them working on the codes. Go through them line by line if you have to. If you see an error in it, highlight it and let me know at the end of the shift. We have the masters stored down here in the vault. If we need to, we will shut down and reload them."
William nodded his head, and replied, "Yes, Ma'am."
He looked at the group of people, chose five of them, and led them out the door.
Samantha looked around and saw that the crew had started to break up. Then the doors opened, and Tim Sanders walked in.
"Hey, Tim! I want you to take five or six people and supervise the spider bots. Work on the exterior hull first, and then on weapons. We may need them sooner than we know. Once those repairs are finished, we will start working on the interior."
Tim looked up as he heard his name called and he saw Samantha standing on a small platform.
"Yes, Ma'am. I'll get on it right away."
Running over to his workstation, he grabbed his mini computer. He looked around, selected six of the engineer techs and they headed out.
Samantha walked over to her group, and they started going over the power conduit schematics. Sam looked up and around the room. Seeing Mr. and Mrs. Thompson come in, she walked over, "Have you seen Commander Thompson? Sorry, I mean your daughter Jenny? She was supposed to meet us down here five minutes ago, and she's late."
Martha looked up as the chief addresses her and replied, "No I haven't." Activating her com unit, she tried to contact her. 'Jenny Thompson, this is your mother. Please contact me.' A sudden pain shot through her head and she rubbed her forehead with tears in her eyes. "Ouch, that hurts."
Samantha looked over at Martha, and said. "I am sorry I should have warned you that the com units are not working. We think it has something to do with Amy being down."
Rubbing her forehead again, she looked at Samantha, "Ouch, now you tell me! I will go up to the bridge and see if she's there. If I find her, where do want her to meet you?
Sam thought for a second, and responded, "Have her meet us in Power Room Three. It's the closest to the amidship's shield generators."
"Ok, I will have her meet you there, if I find her."
Kissing her husbands cheek, she walked out the door.
Sam gathered her crew around her and broke them into two person teams. She sent them out to start the repairs. Soon only Mr. Thompson was left with her. Gathering her tool belt, they walked towards the door.
"You're with me, John. Let's go fix this ship."
Lieutenant Commander Jenny Thompson stood in the transport tube and headed back to the engineering section. Her lift took her around the damaged sections of the ship. Suddenly the tube stopped and the doors opened. Stepping out, she looked around and saw she was not where she wanted to be. Stepping back towards the lift, a force shield snapped on and hurled her across the passageway where she slammed against the far wall, leaving a blood trail as she slid down the wall. Jenny lay there unconscious as the instigator of the trap appeared.
The ghostly form of the bloody woman grinned evilly at her victim. "I have one of you now, only four more to go." Summing the largest spider that was under her control, she ordered it to drag the woman to the end of the hall. The spider retracted its claw and clamped it onto Jen's forearm. The claw squeezed and the bone snapped in the thing's steely grip. It started dragging her down the passageway to a T intersection. As it reached the intersection, a door suddenly formed on the wall and opened. The rogue spider dragged Jen into the room. Inside the room, the ghost stood and points at a bare wall. "Put her there. Make sure she cannot escape. Spread her legs and arms apart, four-inch bands around wrist, ankles, belly and throat; make sure the throat one is not too tight, she must breathe for me, but have the bands connected to the power supply with a voice activated command relay. The command for it shall be pain. She will know my horror before she dies, this I swear. Spider, make a headband that will disable her beacon and com unit. Place it on her head; let it cut her head make it so it is too tight. I don't care."
The spider followed her orders and hoisted Jenny up on the wall. Several smaller bots came out and started forming the bands and attaching them to the wall. When done, they look like they were as one with the wall, as no seam was detectable. Then the large spider replicated the headband and forced it down on her head. Blood ran down her head in small trickles from the edged metal, making her moan in pain.
The ghost looked at her pet spider, and said, "Good, now I need a video unit, so they can see her," she said. With a hideous laugh, she continued, "Build one so they can see her."
She stood and watched the spider build her desired item and when done it stood on a tripod facing Jenny.
"Wake up, plaything. Come on, wake up."
She floated there looking at the young girl, getting more agitated as the female did not wake up.
Suddenly, she said, "Pain!"
The camera came on as she watched the pain flicker through the girl's body.
Jenny drifted in her sleep. She saw her family, friends, and the horror of the battle. Then the images changed to her last birthday. She stood there in surprise, not expecting the party thrown at her home, four days before her birthday. All her friends were there, her mom had made her favorite cake, a strawberry cream cake with real whipped cream as a topping. Her mom walked up and handed her a slice of the cake.
As her fingers touch the plate, pain shot through her head as if someone had taken needles and started pressing them deep into her body. Jenny screamed, her dream shattered, and she slowly came to and looked around.
She heard someone saying, 'Wakey, wakey, little girl.'
She floated over and looked into the girl's face, as Jenny was shocked. The girl moaned as she started to come around. Noticing the eyes as they started to flutter, she floated back a few feet, so Jen will see all of her captor. She hoped Jen would scream her head off when she saw her bloody form.
Jenny opened her eyes and the first thing she saw was apparition of a human woman floating in front of her. Its once beautiful gown was dripping blood as it moved. A huge knife was held in her left hand. When she looked up in to the face, her heart literally climbed up into her throat as she went white with fear. She screamed as it grinned at her and bits of flesh fall off. Catching her breath, she tried to get away and realized she couldn't move. She had been fastened to the wall with metal bands. With sweet dripping from her face, she forced herself to look back up at the creature and could tell it was once a human girl around her own age, but now it had red eyes and blood and gore dripped from its body.
Looking at the camera, she said, "Camera on!" Turning around she yelled, "Scream you bitch, scream for me." Looking at the woman she said, "Pain."
Jenny started jerking as she felt pain shoot through her body; her head was withering in the bands. She tried to pull away, but she was held fast against the wall. Screaming out, she said, "Please stop! Oh God, please stop! It hurts so much! Why are you doing this?"
With blood and gore dripping from her, she drifted in front of the girl. "Good, let it hurt, like it hurt me for a thousand years. You shall feel my torment, but for only a few days at most." Turning to face the camera, "Beware, this is the fate that awaits you all; humanity shall die for what they did to me. All I asked for was justice, but what did I get? I got a thousand years of torture. So let it be known, first you will all suffer, and then you shall all die. Then it will be Terra's turn, but she will go quickly." With an evil grin, she said, "Mild pain." Bloody drool dripped from her face as she floated away. Floating over to the wall, she passed through it. Behind her, Jenny started writhing and screaming in pain.
Ken walked onto the bridge cursing under his breath from the attack and sat down. Grabbing a datapad, he started going through the reports on the damage and the captured ships, when his mother came onto the bridge. Finishing the report, he looked up at his mother.
Martha stood there at the doors and looked around. She saw her son doing something with an electronic pad. Walking over, she waited for him to finish and then asked, "Ken, have you seen Jenny?
"Hi, Mom. I saw her about ten minutes ago heading for engineering."
"She's not there, I was down there with your father and she was supposed to meet us, but she never arrived. Chief Wayne asked me to ... Oh my God, Jenny! Ken, look at the screen," Martha cried out.
Ken whipped his chair around and saw his sister on the screen. She was hanging from a bulkhead. Her blood was dripping from under some type of band around her head. Other bands attached her to the wall. Then the sound came on, and they heard her screaming.
As they watched an apparition floated in front of the camera. They could tell it was once female. Her once fine clothing dripped blood as it moved in front of the camera. A huge knife was in her hand. It turned to face the camera; its red eyes glowed as she spoke to them. With an evil grin, she floated over to a wall, and she passed through it. On the screen, Jenny writhed in pain and screamed once again. As the screen went black, they continue to hear her for ten more seconds.
Ken sat there in shock, his hand slowly crushed by his mother's. When she grabbed it, he had no idea. Reaching over with his other hand, he gently pried it free of his mother's grasp and slowly rubbed his fingers. Reaching down, he turned on the ship's intercom. It squealed as if it was being killed.
"Damn it. Ok I need runners. I want everyone told about this. They are to be on the lookout for a hologram of a human woman. They are not to approach her, but summon security. All crew are to travel in groups of three or more. They are to be advised that this hologram is to be considered extremely dangerous. She has already captured Commander Thompson. Tell them to keep their eyes and ears open and that Jenny is being tortured. If they hear any screaming, they should report it to the bridge."
Federation Fleet Day 5 of conflict The Federation cruiser USS Atlanta LCAM 2 followed behind her sister ship the San Juan as they curled inward towards the Earth and the space docks. Three destroyers led the column with three destroyers behind them. They were nine million three hundred thousand miles from the captured space docks, and closing. Captain Joan Whitman sat in her command chair, taking a sip of her coffee. On the view screen, she could make out the landing bay of the San Juan as...
She is one of the most gorgeous women that i have ever seen. She isn't too tall, about 5'6". Her eyes are so blue you'd think they would glow in the dark. She has perfect teeth, whiter than snow. On a fat day she weights 125. Her long brown hair can cover her c-cup breasts. She has a wonderful personality. She will make you smile on the worst days, without having to suck your dick. Everywhere we go we have a blast, it doesn't matter where we go. She knows exactly what i...
Captain John Stratton was fuming; ever since they had been brought onboard, they have been ignored. Walking back and forth in front of his men, he went over to the door and pounded on it some more. "Hey out there, I want to talk to whoever is in charge." Lieutenant Michael McCall sat in one of the chairs, watching his commanding officer pace. He called to him, "John!" Getting no response, he tried again, "Hey Iceman, calm down, they will get to us when they can. You heard the intercom....
Aboard the cruiser Starburst, fires raged throughout the ship. With the internal force fields on, the fires had air to burn, but with the damage to the ship, they knew if they lowered them they would lose many warriors trapped in damaged compartments. Lieutenant Vak watched as his squad of firefighters battled a fire near the number one magazine. With temperatures reaching up to the eighteen hundred degree mark, support beams were becoming weakened and the storage room was an inferno. The...
Ken sat and listened to Amy, and then turned to the others. "First, I think we need to catch this psychopath before he kills his next victim. We have to do it. Then, we should get the Washington back up into space. After that, we need to recruit a crew," turning back to Amy he added, "I just thought of something. Do you have to be at the asteroid belt for your spider bots to build? And if not, is there a way we can get the spider bots there, quickly?" "Yes, we could use a shuttle and...
Philadelphia: 11:50 A.M. Tim let Amy cry in his arms as he held the woman who brought hope to a lot of people of this world. So she went overboard and took justice in her hands. He thought it was worth it as far as he was concerned. He felt Amy gently push on him so he released her. "Feeling better?" he asked. "Yeah, I am. Thank you, Tim," Amy replied. "Good, what are your orders?" Tim asked. Amy laughed and replied, "Tim you out rank me. I'm only a commander while...
She stood there and watched the four friends hug each other, and talk. She moved around the room and sat in one of the chairs. She studied each one, and listened as they talked about the fall. The one she had saved, Ken, was tall and handsome. He projected an aura of possible command material. The other male, jumped right in, and took over. He showed confidence and determination, a possible recruit as a Marine. The one, who carried her sensor crystal, had a quick mind, and a sharp eye. She...
Federation Fleet Ken stood on the flag bridge of the USS Washington and watched the gate open for his ship. Looking at his wife Jessica he said, "Okay, let's find out what is going on." "Yes, Sir. We are dropping out in three ... two ... one ... Now!" The Washington dropped out of fold. The two assault cruisers, Grizzly and Orca, and the seven destroyers were flanking her. The destroyers spread out in a half circle to protect the three ships. Sensors came online and flashed their...
President Thomas Kincaide was sitting down to his breakfast with his wife, when his chief of staff came into the dining room. "Mr. President, we have a situation out in Las Vegas, it seems a large ship was sighted taking off from somewhere in Northern Arizona. Nellis AFB dispatched five F-16s to investigate it. The tower was in contact with the planes when suddenly all communications was cut off. Nellis dispatched an additional ten more planes to the area, but nothing has been found of the...
The Battle for the Space Docks Federation Fleet Captain John Wilkes walked onto the bridge of the USS America and looked at the main screen. The news he had just received about the takeover had him nervous about possible saboteurs or traitors on board his command. Pressing the intercom, he started to address the crew, "This is the Captain speaking. All hands man your battlestations. This is not a drill. Units of the United States Military have engaged our bases on the moon and the Arizona...

05:30 Pluto, Base Station Elysian, 1-14-05 Ken watched the fleet approach the huge dry dock. The ships were spreading out for the docking arms as he turned and looked at his wife Tammy who was giving her fleet orders. "Helm. All ahead, slow. Starboard thrusters, minimum fire, in three ... two ... one ... engage," Tammy said as she sat in the command chair. "Firing thrusters, Ma'am," replied Commander Stella Salaneo. The huge ship slowly slid down the length of the gantry until it was...
Captured Space Docks Admiral Farragut froze when the round blew the com unit apart, which was built into his desk. He looked at his assailant. Before he could say anything or move, a dart slammed into his chest, and he flew out of his chair and crashed to the floor. Walking over to the man, the figure knelt beside him, and bound his hands and feet. Pulling out a scanner, the person scanned the man and found his locator beacon. With a quick tapping of keys, the scanner shut the beacon down....
August 21, 1989, Chicago, Illinois “Unbelievable,” I said when I read the headline from the Chicago Tribune. “It says here that Solidarity activist Tadeusz Mazowiecki was nominated to be Prime Minister of Poland.” I hadn’t had a chance to read the paper on Sunday because it hadn’t been delivered before we left for the race track in Michigan. “So now what?” Kara asked. “We’re in totally uncharted territory. Your guess is as good as anyone’s right about now.” “Steve, do you have a minute?”...
June 5, 1989, Chicago, Illinois “How was your day exploring?” I asked Abbie when everyone sat down to dinner. “Chicago is not New York, that’s for sure.” “Did you find anyone to hang out with?” “I talked to a couple of people and I’m going to a dance club tonight to check it out.” “Take a cab home, please,” I said. “I’ll cover the cost.” “Why?” “The L runs through some very rough neighborhoods between the Loop and Hyde Park and it’s a longish walk from the L here. Buses don’t run late...
Ken stood on the flag bridge of the Washington, and looked at the holomap. The Oregon was five hundred miles to his portside. The destroyers Bulldog, Boxer and Doberman were in an arrow formation directly ahead of the two battleships. Behind the flagship, the remaining ships of the fleet stretched out to their individual time drops. The last ones were the hospital ships, while directly behind him were the assault cruisers. Worried about what was going to happen, Ken chewed on his cigar. So...
Amy appeared on the bridge deck, and quickly reacted to the damage. Activating the tractor beams, she reached out and latched onto the crew. Only two were sucked out, as internal forcefields she had installed snapped on and covered the openings. Activating her communications system, she issued her orders. "This is Amy, I need medical teams to the main bridge we have casualties." Walking around the room, she checked each crewmember and finally knelt by her sister-wife. "Tammy, please...
Present Day “Are you boys ready to go?” called out Jessica Parnell, standing at the bottom of the steps. “Coming, Mom!” came back a loud yell from down the hallway to the bedrooms. Jessica continued standing at the foot of the steps, waiting for her sons to come down, and was on the verge of summoning them a second time when she stopped. One of the bedroom doors opened with a crash and then came a thunder of feet as her two teenage sons rumbled down the hall and down the stairs. “We’re...
American Fleet The Abraham Lincoln turned and started firing into the weakened shields of the Washington. Suddenly the shields failed and explosions detonated from the side of the massive ship. Admiral Callaghan grinned as he watched the ship heave as a dozen antimatter rounds slammed into the side of the battleship and half her weapons went down. "Keep hitting them. Blow those bastards away!" Mathew said with glee in his voice. "I am sir, do you want me to pull their teeth so we can...
December 31, 1988, Chicago, Illinois “There you are!” Sofia said, coming up to me after Bethany and I left my study. “«Hej», Sofia! How are you?” “Good. I missed being here for Christmas, but you know how it goes.” “I do. Where’s Stavros?” “Where else? With Pete, Jamie, Kurt, Dave, and the rest of the guys in the basement. I have a question for you?” “What’s up?” “I want to start a new tradition that’s really an old one. Just before midnight, I’d like to read «Nyårsklockan» like they...
Six weeks later, Ken sat at his desk going through Captain Windsor's logs. He was looking for the clues he suspected were there. "Tammy, it says here, that the Washington was split in half at the battle of Tallis. When she was rebuilt, she was two hundred feet longer than before. I think that is where Jessica is; I think she is in that area. We have been over everything else. Amy, please bring up a pair of holograms of the ship as she used to look and as how she looks now." The image...
Federation Fleet The Washington led her fleet towards the captured Space Docks where they circled the Earth, at five hundred thousand miles. Ken stood on the flag bridge with his wives and watched the American ships maneuvering in front of them. "Admiral, the American fleet is joining up. They have fifteen destroyers and four light cruisers," Lieutenant Jinnah Chin reported. "Thank you lieutenant, we will stick with the plan," Admiral Tammy Thompson said. "Yes, Ma'am. I am sending...
Captured Crytherian Space Dock Captain Sammy O'Rourke-Anderson watched as the twenty spider bots continued to build the small ship. It was now over eighty percent completed. Walking to the door, she looked out into the hall and saw it was still clear. "Come on Kevin, get your ass back here," Sammy snarled as she heard a clang behind her. Shutting the hatch, she walked back to the dock and watched the spiders lift a section of the black hull up to the side of the ship and fasten it to the...
The sounds of Sonny Rollins drifted though the room as Lisa sat at the table, reading her medical books. Sitting beside her was a half-eaten grilled cheese sandwich and a glass of milk. Cheri was playing with her squeaky toy. Lisa rubbed her head trying to get rid of her headache that has been bothering her for three days. Suddenly she snapped at the dachshund, "Cheri! Stop squeaking that damned thing." Under the coffee table, Cheri dropped her toy and whimpered. Turning around, her...
Amy paced through the medical ward aboard the ship, while the spiders continued their maintenance. Down in the main cavern, the spiders scurried about the cavern, and over two gantries as they worked. Amy did a quick check and saw all systems were a go. She walked over to Ken and looked down at his peaceful face. She leaned down through the force field and kissed him, and tapped into Ken's nanobots. She was regretting what she had to do, but knew that she must. For they all needed to learn...
December 20, 1988, Chicago, Illinois “I didn’t know doctors made house calls these days,” I chuckled. “We usually don’t,” Doctor Robertson said. “But Al didn’t want Jessica at the hospital.” “That’s right,” Al Barton said. “She doesn’t need hospitalization and I suspect you know that the hospital is worse than a High School locker room for gossip.” “So I’ve heard,” I said, shifting my eyes to Alicia. It was just after 9:00pm on Tuesday, and Al Barton, Doctor Robertson, and Doctor Franco,...
September 3, 1989, Chicago, Illinois “Good morning, Sensei,” I said, bowing to Sensei Jim. “Good morning!” he said waving me to a chair in his office. “How was your trip?” I asked. “Enlightening. I spent most of my time acting as a manservant to Sensei Robert and Sensei Hiro.” “He who will lead, must first serve,” I said. “Someday, I’m going to send you to Sensei Hiro, should he live long enough. You understand.” “Does that mean you are now 6th Dan?” I...
June 19, 1989, Chicago, Illinois “Dada?” Jesse said when Elyse and I arrived home late in the afternoon with Michael. Elyse went to sit on the couch and was immediately surrounded by the girls. “Yes?” “Aunt Elyse had a boy?” “Yes. His name is Michael.” “Aunt Chess will have a boy?” He still called her that, and I wondered if that would be her nickname forever. “Yes, and his name will be Albert.” “Good! No more sisters!” “Birgit is a nice girl, Jesse,” I said. “Yes. But no more...
December 1, 1989, Chicago, Illinois “What’s the plan for our anniversary?” Jessica asked as she, Kara, and I cuddled in bed on Friday night. “Making love!” Kara giggled. “That’s obvious!” Jessica replied. “I mean are we going out to dinner? Or what?” “How about Rosebud?” I suggested. “Or Morton’s. Or Shaw’s. Any of those would be fine.” “Rosebud is good. I did have to swap shifts to get that day free, as well as the 13th for your company party. I have to work twelve-hour shifts both...
The shuttle gently set down next to the airlock. A small gantry extended from the ship to the airlock, and gently locked onto the side of the huge station. Down on the assault deck, Chief Engineer Cory Hill got up, and went to the airlock. He checked the hatch, and seeing the seal showed a tight fit he waited for the air to build up and the lights to come on. Activating his com unit, he called the captain. "Captain, I have a green light on the hatch, and airlock is pressurizing...
January 31, 1989, Chicago, Illinois “Hi, Al,” I said, sitting down across from him at our usual spot at Medici. “Hello! I was very happy to hear you say she thinks she’s being released on the 10th. That’s great news! I’m sure that will be in the next report I get later this week.” “I would guess, and as I said, I’m worried that with the counseling, the reinstatement process, and working in a clinic that she’s already going to be pushing too hard.” “The clinic work is really just basic...
Pathetic I was sitting at my computer, working on some writing, when Jessica knockedsoftly at the front door. I had been on a hot streak that day, getting some serious pages in on mylatest novel, and finished the sentence before I responded. "Yes?" I called. I saw the clock, knew who it was – she was right ontime, a very good sign. She and I had only met recently, first on-line, followeda few phone conversations. This was our first face-to-face, and I half expectedher to be late just out of the...
February 11, 1989, Chicago, Illinois Our drive from Syracuse to Chicago was mostly uneventful. There was some construction on the Ohio Turnpike that slowed us down, but otherwise, we listened to music, mostly alternative rock, and talked. The bulk of the conversation had been about my history with my sister, how it had started, what I thought had happened and why, and how it had progressed. I knew Jessica was extremely uncomfortable with the situation, but she’d agreed that we could work...
After talking for an hour, everyone turned in and got some sleep. While they slept, Amy watched over them, by making an image of herself appear in each room. Sitting in a chair, she watched them sleep, and sighed with contentment. A crew, at last! It had been so long since she'd had anyone on board that she could talk with. She then went back to examining their plans about using the mech warriors as ground assault vehicles. She took what information she could find on the computer game (and...
May 2, 1989, Chicago, Illinois “Everything is set for Pittsburgh,” Cindi said when she came into my office on Tuesday morning. “We rented a two-bedroom apartment for Mario and Ralph month-to-month until they can find their own places. The phones are set. They’ll start there next Monday.” “Sounds good,” I said. “Did you talk to Julia about hiring?” “She, Dave, Elyse, and I had a meeting about that. I think Elyse is going to bring you the full proposal later today, so I’ll just let her do...
Let me say right up front that Gunther was definitely not a young man.I knew he had been around the Santa operation at the North Pole long before I arrived with my bright ideas for cost reduction. I was called in to promote increased toy production by the easily distracted Elves. Those little imps preferred being silly rather than busy little workers focused on their quotas like dedicated employees. As a small-sized human male, I was able to relate easily to the female Elves because they liked...
Fantasy & Sci-FiMarch 22, 1989, Chicago, Illinois “Steve, you have to come see this!” Elyse called from the great room. “What’s up?” I asked walking in. “They had a clip on CNN, but I switched over to ESPN. Some hockey player had his jugular vein and carotid artery sliced by a skate on the ice.” “That’s pretty much fatal,” Jessica said. “Maybe if you had a trauma surgeon right there...” “He lived,” Elyse said. “They don’t have too many more details, but the team doctor and some other doctors stabilized...
July 5, 1989, Chicago, Illinois “Steve, Gwen Meyer is on the phone,” Keri said over the intercom late on Wednesday morning. “Put her through, please.” A moment later I greeted Gwen. “It’s over. The judge signed the final order declaring non-parenthood five minutes ago. I’m sorry it took so long, but her attorney filed several last-minute motions which turned out to be frivolous. The judge dismissed all them.” “Thank God,” I sighed. “Do you think they’ll appeal?” “They really don’t have...
March 3, 1989, Chicago, Illinois Carla Rizzi stood on the sidewalk, holding the hand of a little girl beside her. Carla looked more or less the same as she had the last time I’d seen her, and the little girl, who had to be Rachel, was the spitting image of her mother. In a sense, that was a relief, because if she’d looked anything like my mom or my sister, I’d have been worried. “Steve, this is Rachel. Rachel, this is my friend Mr. Adams.” “Hi Mr. Adams,” she said. I almost gave my...
December 18, 1988, Iron Mountain, Michigan “What the... ?!” I gasped. “She’s sedated,” Alicia said from behind me. “Sedated? What the fuck did you do?” “An intervention,” Jennifer said. “After Elyse worked on you, we talked. I got in touch with Alicia, she talked to Doctor Barton and we hatched a plan.” “Which was?” “To kidnap your wife and bring her here,” Alicia said. “Doctor Barton officially knows nothing about that part of the plan. But he sanctioned it. Come have some coffee and...
Molly watched her new friends drive away. When they were out of sight, she turned back to her mother. She stepped back in to her mother's arms and gave her a hug. Stopping the hug, she looked her mom in the face. "Mom, how about pizza tonight?" Kathleen looked at her baby, and she felt complete again as she realized the hole in her heart was once again filled. "What ever you want sweetie, the number for Pizza Hut is on the fridge like always." Shaking her head, she replied, "No mom,...
September 18, 1989, Chicago, Illinois “I have the hiring forms for Jody Pancook and Park Sung-Hee,” Dave said. I scanned them and scribbled my name at the bottom and initialed the salary line, then passed the papers back to Dave. “Next problem,” he said. “Computers.” “I don’t see that we have any choice but to buy ‘386 systems. We keep hearing rumors of ‘486 computers but I wouldn’t want to buy one of the first ones.” Dave nodded, “We still have some ‘286 systems that we need to replace,...
June 17, 1989, Chicago, Illinois “Steve, the caterers are here,” Kara called from the foyer. “Let them in. We’re on a really tight schedule!” “Steve, the florist is finished with the trellis,” Jennifer called from the back door. I sighed and said to nobody in particular, “You know, I liked it when Elyse handled all this stuff.” I went to the backyard to check the trellis under which the ‘Gang of Four’ would stand for their vows. It looked fine, as did the flower arrangements around it....
January 9, 1994, Chicago, Illinois “I really should have called and postponed today’s lunch with Ailea until next month,” I said. “You already missed three months because of me and the injury,” Jessica said. “I know, but it’s been a crazy weekend. And we haven’t spent enough time together.” “We have all afternoon,” she replied. “It’s OK.” “If you’re sure. I do need to go see Matthew. He was pretty sad when Jason and Abbie left in the limo.” Neither Jessica nor Kara objected, so I went...
“Oh God, oh God, oh God,” Jessica Buske whispered to herself, crying. She was sitting on a bench in the park. It was the only place she could think of to go. Jessica is a pretty red head, nice figure. She’s wearing a business suit. “Cutbacks...cutbacks...” she repeated it to herself, almost not believing the meaning of the word. The word seemed like some kind of a curse on her. Her whole life had changed an hour ago. And now, here she was, in the park in the middle of the afternoon, wondering...
February 10, 1989, To and from Lewiston, Maine Every minute took me closer to Jessica. As the miles fell away, listening to an ‘alternative rock’ station which Abbie had suggested, I thought about the previous night. Abbie had stayed until about 5:45am, when she’d left to go to her room so she could shower and dress. I’d gone down to breakfast, and she’d acted as if nothing had happened the previous night, most likely due to her parents’ presence. She’d simply waved and said goodbye when I...
April 11, 1989, Chicago, Illinois Jorge finally came home on Tuesday afternoon. He was sore, but recovering. What hadn’t recovered was my sister’s attitude. She’d at least started going to classes after skipping three days, and seemed to be caught up, with a bit of help from some friends. But on the topic of Jorge and his family, she was immovable. The González family had finally gone home earlier in the day, once Jorge’s release papers had been signed. I only hoped things would improve...
June 4, 1989, Chicago, Illinois I parked at Midway Airport, walked across Cicero Avenue and into the terminal building. I found the Delta arrival listing and walked to the correct gate to wait for Abbie’s plane. I was a bit early, so I sat down in a chair to read the latest edition of The Economist. Events in China were unfolding so fast that the week-old news had already been overtaken by the military crackdown in Tiananmen Square which had begun very early in the morning Chicago time. The...
October 9, 1989, Chicago, Illinois “Seventy-thousand demonstrators?” I said, shaking my head. “It’s over. If they don’t put down this rally, that’s the end of the East German government.” We were watching CNN after karate practice. “What does THAT mean?” Elyse asked. “I have no idea. Maybe free elections like in Poland and Hungary? And then some sort of accommodation with the Soviet Union, I guess. I really wish I had a way to talk to someone in Moscow about this, but I don’t want to get...
February 10, 1989, Syracuse, New York After the revelation about my sister, and the promise that it would never start again, we’d drifted into a conversation about how things had been going back home since Jessica had left. I told her about work, karate, and the things that had been going on in everyone else’s life, but avoided discussing any of the girls that I’d been with. I’d decided I was going to completely level with Jess on the topic, though I felt the conversation could wait. We...
Commodore Thompson stood there issuing orders to the crew of the Oregon. "Lieutenant I want to know what is going on. Who authorized the launching of those mech lifters?" On the screen, lifter after lifter was dropping out of the bay and heading north. "How many mechs?" Lieutenant Commander Shawn Edwards looked at the Commodore and replied, "Sir, I don't know. All I know is that the red alert went off in the mech bay, and then three wings of mechs or thirty mechs loaded up and left...
May 17, 1989, Chicago, Illinois “Do any of you have anything you want to say about last week’s talk?” Doctor Green asked. “We talked about it a bit, and all three of us agree that your analysis was pretty much correct,” Kara said. “We even think you’re right about Elyse’s position,” Jessica added. “I’m curious about Steve’s revelation that Elyse asked him to marry her on at least two occasions. Did you both know about that?” “It’s public knowledge,” Kara said. “They’ve spoken openly...
June 11, 1989, Chicago, Illinois It was just after 3:00am when I kissed Trish goodbye. She’d been an enthusiastic, energetic, and adventurous lover. We’d done just about anything either of us could think of, though her breasts weren’t large enough for a tit-fuck. The last time had been in the shower where we’d ostensibly gone to clean up afterwards, but instead I ended up taking her from behind as she leaned against the wall of the shower. “I think I’ll have you again, Steve Adams,” she...
July 17, 1989, Chicago, Illinois “Steve,” Dave said, coming into my office, “I need you to sign this capital expenditure form, please.” “For?” “An IBM PS/2 running OS/2 server so that we can run Microsoft SQL. Greg’s at a point where we need more than just a test PC to work on the database conversion.” “OK. We discussed that, so yes, I’ll sign it.” I took the form and scribbled my name on the bottom, and initialed the amount and handed it back to Dave. “Thanks. Don’t forget our...
September 8, 1989, Chicago, Illinois “Did you have fun in California?” Jessica smirked when I walked into the bedroom. “I did,” I chuckled. “Thank you.” I went over to the crib and kissed Albert. Birgit was in the nursery with Matthew, and I didn’t want to disturb them. “She came to me to tell me about the guy she met. Kara and I talked about it and suggested that she fly out to San Francisco and surprise you. Given how much she’s helped you since Thanksgiving, it was the least we could...
April 21, 1989, Chicago, Illinois I was in my office, just before lunchtime, when Keri transferred Jessica’s call. “REINSTATED!” came the ear-splitting shriek from the handset. Then some more unintelligible babble before she calmed down enough to carry a conversation. “Congratulations, Babe! We’ll celebrate tonight! I assume Al called you?” “I just got off the phone with him. My tentative start date is September 1st. I’m limited to eight-hour shifts for the first month, then I’ll go back...
December 29, 1988, Chicago, Illinois “Hi, Steve!” Kimmy squealed, giving me a tight hug and a quick kiss before pulling me into her apartment. “I missed you!” “I missed you, too!” I said. “I heard through the grapevine that you finally saw Jessica and that she’s getting some kind of treatment for stress.” “You heard right.” “So what does that mean?” she asked. I knew she meant between us, and was very glad that I’d had the conversation with Kara. “Right now, you and I continue on. We...
January 21, 1989, Chicago, Illinois Elyse and I were cuddling in bed after making love and Matthew was sleeping in the nursery. “How would I find out about a foundation in Chicago?” I asked. “Foundation?” “The Lundgren Family Foundation,” I said. “Wait! Lundgren? Is Jeri from THAT Lundgren family? They’re worth like 250 million bucks! There was an article in Chicago magazine that mentioned them, though no picture of anyone except the scions.” “I’m pretty sure she is. She said that her...
