Leah Williams sat at her desk and poured over some poorly completed work. She eyeballed the worksheet that someone had answered all too hastily and made her marks. At least they tried. She wrote "7/10" then drew a large crimson C.
Her computer monitor chirped as she saw she had received another useless email. Wait. It was from the principal. The nearly thirty something year old brunette leaned forward to check out her screen; had there been any male students in the room they would have checked Miss Williams out. Many students tried to get a glimpse down Miss Long's blouses, some even knocked pencils and pens off their desk hoping she'd be nice enough to lean over to give them a view of her perfectly formed C-Cup breasts. She opened the email and read quickly.
It didn't matter that this was her sixth year of being a teacher--she always hated getting called to the principal's office. She probably dreaded it more than the students. It meant either some additional workload, him asking her to cover down for some additional duty or to work a stupid football game. Something usually not good.
Then Leah suddenly thought that it might be about something a lot more important than selling concessions at a sportsball game. It might be about her tenure. This was her tenure year at the quaint southern high school in which she taught. Most school systems only took three years, hers took five. They were a nice school with some of the best test scores and well behaved schools.
Leah had taught her first year in an inner city school and came home crying nearly every night. It wasn't anything like her internship teaching which had been in a nice county school. The inner city was brutal. And scary. Leah had wanted to reach out and touch the lives of children but she saw that students has zero respect for teachers and the demographics of the inner city school left her the victim of many cruel remarks from students who simply didn't care and who weren't punished by the school's admin.
When Leah had a chance to get out of that hell hole she took it. So the nice Alexander Latwon High School--named for some long dead Confederate general--was a huge change of pace. The students behaved, the administration punished bad behavior, they actually communicated. It was organized. The demographics were also a huge shift. Leah would often be the only white woman in the room at her inner city school. Leah didn't care about race. She wanted to teach children--but that didn't mean no one else did. She was accused by many students for being racist when she had to discipline them for even the most outrageous incidents. Needless to say at her first school she had to worry about students by passing the metal detector. At her current school she had to only worry about an occasionally skipper or the newest trend--a bold vaper.
Oh how she looked forward to tenure. Job security was a must in the crazy world with all the political and economic instability. Leah was also engaged to be married to her fiancé Jonathan who had a decent job in engineering. So having that stability was even more important. Besides--once she had tenure she could start to backslide on things. She wouldn't have to volunteer so much and let the new teachers earn their stripes. Maybe show an extra movie here or there...take a Friday off more than once in a blue moon. She didn't want to be a BAD teacher...but she deserved to have a bit of a break from the stress of it all.
Teaching 12th graders now also meant she had things mostly on easy mode. She had taught 9th graders and never wanted to do that again. They were wild. 12th grade US History and Government with a few electives varied by year was perfect for her. She looked at the clock--she hadn't been long into her planning period of a brief 50 minutes (oh how they always sped away). She stood from her desk and headed to Principal Howard's office.
