Chapter 36: Ellie
I was a schoolteacher and she was a high-powered lawyer. I was a good listener, polite, semi-handsome and a patron of the arts.

‘Black tie. I will get you a tux.’
‘No need, I have one. Let me write down where the place is, we can meet there.’
‘Third floor at the head of the boardwalk?’
‘Yes, I’m glad you know the place. Dinner will be fried seafood but you can get it grilled or a vegetable plate. I have to tell them by Tuesday.’
‘Grilled. We are having a seven-course dinner with three choices for each. I will bring you the request form. Right now I want more calamari and another beer.’
I ordered two of each and we talked for another hour.
During our nearly two year history of running into each other we had nodded to each other for some time then said hello for sometime but the last four months we have spent intermissions chatting with each other. We both had season tickets to each of the art venues and a couple of times we had run into each other at the baseball park or a classic rock concert. We were acquaintances.
On that early December Day we had become good friends.
After we finished the calamari and beer I walked her to her car and kissed her cheek before she drove away. I was about to back away in mine when she pulled up behind me, walked to my window and handed me her card. She had written her personal number on the back.

The band was good and people were dancing so we did too. I did notice she was trying to get me close to the squirting water fountain but
I managed to stay away. After the dance I took her hand and led her right through the middle of it to the other side where Angela and her partner Mandy where watching us.

Ellie likely had full season tickets and may have assumed I did too.
Either way I was happy we had another date.

She said, ‘This is an agreement that I can end our arrangement anytime I want and when I do you get one month’s severance pay.
