Caroline’s Story continues:
Lena recounts events, a crisis, and Byron.
Tuesday was an interesting day. Perhaps I need to explain how I felt about Mike going off to see his daughters. You see, I love him so much, every time that he gets tugged by the past I worry that he will leave me. It is silly, Jo keeps telling me it is but I can’t help it. I suppose that it’s a lack of confidence. Why I don’t know, he makes me feel so wonderful. Perhaps that’s it, I can’t stand the thought of losing that. But Jo is right. I must stop doubting him for, as she said, he doesn’t doubt me. All my joking about fancying Guy isn’t really joking and he knows it. I do fancy him, fancy him a lot and he’s only 24!
When he came back that morning I felt so relieved, so pleased to see him. Pleased that he had committed his life to me that I vowed not to doubt him any more. I didn’t tell anyone, but it was a promise I made to myself. Unfortunately I wasn’t really able to keep it until I grew up later at the villa.
I was looking forward to lunch, to seeing Jo and Guy with each other again. They seemed to get on fairly well at the party and I could tell she was really taken with him. Mike and I had planned to leave them alone for a few minutes when he arrived so we popped out and made the coffee. They seemed to be OK then although it was obvious that Guy was very, very shy and Jo was not being quite her normal self. I knew that if she really fancied a bloke she would come on a bit stronger than she had done. She seemed to be a bit worried about him, how he would react and, I suppose, she was a little bit frightened of her own feelings at this point.
Things seemed to get worse over lunch. She was flirting with him, using all the signs a woman has to let a man know she likes him. Soft glances, the odd touch, turning towards him, smiling, listening attentively when he spoke, yet he didn’t seem to be responding. Of course he was the perfect gentleman, polite and considerate, but he wasn’t a bloke with a girl that he liked, and I was pretty certain that he liked her, liked her a lot. He treated her like a friend of a friend, as Mike’s friend. Now I wasn’t sure whether he wasn’t that interested in Jo or that he was but didn’t want to upset Mike. I could see that Jo was getting a little bit exasperated with him and I wasn’t surprised when I got the ‘loo’ sign. I won’t repeat all of what happened here because Jo has covered it: only those bits of me and Mike. First we went off to the loo and, when we got back, Jo went off with Guy.
As they left the table Mike turned to me and said, ‘What was all that about? Jo wanted to talk to you didn’t she?’
‘Yes,’ I said, ‘about Guy.’
‘I thought so. I feel like shaking him. She obviously likes him a lot and she’s showing it. It’s certainly affecting me,’ he said smiling. ‘I think I need to give you a kiss.’ So he leant over and kissed me. Then he took my head in his hands and looked deep into my eyes, ‘I love you. Do you know that?’
‘Mmm,’ I said and kissed him again.
‘Now,’ he said, ‘what did she say?’
‘You’re right. She’s getting worried and annoyed that he doesn’t seem to be treating her as she expects. She is coming on to him, not that strongly, but she is. You’ve noticed so he must have. She thinks that either he doesn’t fancy her, which I think is silly, or he is worried about you and her.’
‘Well, he could be but I’ve already told him it’s OK. Oh not quite so indelicately, but I have told him. I think he likes her. He certainly seemed to at the party and in the lounge. Perhaps he is just worried about me. I’m not sure but I think there might be something else going on here but, anyway, I’ll have a word with him. How are you going to leave us alone?’
‘I’m going to the loo in a minute. When they get back tell her I felt a bit faint then she’ll come and get me. We’ll give you a few minutes. Is that enough?’
‘Should be,’ he said, ‘there’s not much to say is there. Something like, look you stupid boy, she is not mine!’
‘Oh, dress it up a bit won’t you.’
He laughed, ‘Yes, I’ll be less blunt. Look, I see them out of the window. Off you go, powder your delectable nose.’
I blew him a kiss as I left for the loo. A few moments later Jo arrived. Breathlessly she asked, ‘What’s he going to say?’ We chatted for a moment then returned.
‘Are you OK now Lena,’ Mike asked me with concern.
‘Mmm, I think it’s a bit hot in here. I should have gone for a walk with Jo and Guy some fresh air might have done me some good.’
Jo was looking at Guy. He was quiet and seemed even worse if anything. We both sat down and Jo looked at Mike questioningly.
‘He doesn’t believe me,’ he said looking at Guy then at Jo. ‘He says that a beautiful woman like you couldn’t possibly be really interested in a shy, bumbling bloke like him. He says that you don’t need to pretend for his sake.’
Guy looked up at him, ‘Oh uncle,’ he managed to say. Then he looked at Jo. She was getting angry and annoyed with him. I knew her of old. She doesn’t have much of a temper but when she does get going she can be very decisive. Mike and I both looked at her waiting for a reaction. She turned to look at me and I smiled at her. I knew that something would happen in a moment, I didn’t know what she’d do but I knew her well enough to know she would do something. Mike looked concerned, he didn’t know what was happening.
She turned and smiled coolly at both of us, ‘Excuse me,’ she said then she grabbed Guy’s head and planted a kiss directly on his lips. I think it was a kiss that said far more than ‘I like you’. At first he seemed to resist but she didn’t let up. Then I could see that slowly he started to kiss her back. After quite a long while she pulled away, not that I think she wanted to but she had to breathe. Good old Jo, I thought, she’s not one to let things lie, rather like me. I suppose I got it from her.
Then she grabbed his hand and said, ‘Come on, I need to talk to you.’ She pulled him after her and with a hurried, ‘Excuse us,’ took him into the gardens.
‘Phew,’ said Mike, ‘that was hairy. Did you know she was going to do that?’
‘Well,’ I said laughing, ‘I didn’t know she was going to do that but I knew she was going to do something. She was getting really angry and when that happens she usually does something.’
‘I hope she sorts it out with him,’ he said. ‘I don’t understand. I know he’s not that forward with women but he seems particularly stubborn with Jo. I get the distinct feeling that he’s frightened of her.’
‘Frightened?’
‘Yes, his whole manner is strange. I can’t remember seeing him act like this before. Certainly not with any of the girls I introduced him to. Oh he didn’t get anywhere with any of them, his fault I think, but that was genuine shyness. This is something different. I do hope she sorts it out with him.’ He turned and smiled at me, ‘They do look good together don’t they?’
‘Mmm. Are you jealous?’ I suddenly asked wanting to know how all this was making him feel. I wondered if he felt threatened by Jo’s apparent affection for Guy.
‘Jealous? No, not at all. Look sweetheart, I’ve always got you haven’t I? I love Jo but not in the same way as you. If it were you out there with Guy, yes I suppose I would feel jealous. Not of you being with him but of the way you felt about him. Do you understand?’
‘I think so,’ I said. ‘You wouldn’t mind me going with him would you,’ I asked nervously.
‘No I wouldn’t. That would be the same as you going with Jo but I kn
ow you don’t feel about Jo how you feel about me and I know that you wouldn’t feel about Guy how you feel about me. That sounds silly but you do know what I mean don’t you?’
I smiled and kissed him, ‘Yes,’ I said, ‘I love you, you are my one and only, so I understand.’
We chatted away for a while wondering what was going on outside then they came back and it was obvious something had changed. She must have done something drastic. I’d say, by the look on his face, that she’d won him over with one or two of her extra special kisses. She didn’t seem to want to let go of his hand, and he wasn’t complaining about it either. I was dying to know what had happened out there so I said, ‘Jo, are you OK, you look flushed. What happened?’
‘Nothing happened,’ she said, ‘I’m just a bit warm. I’ll be OK in a minute.’ Then she gave me a look that said ‘don’t ask!’.
It was too much for me, I had to know, ‘Come on, something happened.’
‘Leave them Lena,’ Mike said, then to the two of them as if nothing had happened, ‘We’ll have another glass of wine then leave for home. Shall we drop you off Guy?’
Guy seemed to be OK now as he answered, ‘Thanks uncle, yes please.’
I watched the two of them as they sat and talked. He was much more attentive, his attitude subtly different. He smiled at her and they kept touching each other. Only little touches but very different from before. They kept glancing at each other, again not that much but they were sharing feelings now, he was no longer distant. Mike seemed really pleased at what was happening. He seemed to understand that an important point had been reached.
Then it was time to go home. Jo sat in the back with Guy as she had on the way out. Now, however, they were close to each other. She looked as though she never wanted to let it go. I was sure now that these two were right for each other. I know it was early days but they looked right together and there was obviously a terrific attraction between the two of them.
When we arrived at Silvio’s Guy got out of the car and went to leave with a reluctant not to Jo. She seemed undecided about what to do then Mike said, ‘Why don’t you walk him home Jo, you haven’t let go of him since lunch.’ He smiled softly at her as he teased her, ‘We’ll wait in the car.’
I watched them as they walked to his front door. Close together now and holding hands. I could see them talking and I was dying to know what they were saying.
‘They do look right together, don’t they?’ Mike said. ‘Do you think that she’s managed to get through to him?’
‘Oh, I think she has. Look at the way they are looking at each other. I think they’re OK now.’
‘Good,’ he said, ‘I must admit I was getting a little annoyed with him for being so stubborn. I wonder if it’s a little more than shyness.’
Still watching them I saw that they kissed, ‘Oh look. Now that is a proper kiss. I rather fancy she has him hooked,’ I said smiling at Mike.
He laughed, ‘Now I know what a fish feels like. Is that what happens, you women hook us.’
‘You bet we do,’ I said laughing with him.
She turned to walk away then turned back as he said something to her. ‘I wonder what that was about?’ I thought.
Then, after a short conversation, they kissed again. Something was going on and I was dying to find out what. I’d have to grill her when she got back.
‘What were you doing Jo, you’ve been ages?’ I said as she returned to the car.
She laughed, ‘Never you mind,’ then, ‘he’s taking me to dinner on Thursday.’
Mike was surprised, ‘He is, bloody hell. Good for him. You must have had some effect on him Jo. Good, I’m pleased.’
‘He said he’d never taken a ‘proper’ woman to dinner so I told him to phone you for some tips. Oh, and can we borrow the car?’ Jo said.
‘Sure,’ Mike replied, ‘Where’s he taking you?’
She laughed, ‘I don’t think he knows but I’m sure you can suggest somewhere to him.’
Mike laughed back, ‘Somewhere to talk?’ he asked.
‘Yes, somewhere to talk. Somewhere private.’
‘I know just the place.’
‘I’m getting in the back with you,’ I said to Jo.
‘Well?’ I said.
‘Well what?’ she replied.
‘Oh, come on Jo, tell us what happened. I’m dying to know. Something must have happened. What did you say to him in the garden, and when you said goodbye. Come on, tell me.’ I’m afraid I was getting a little impatient just then and she knew so she was teasing me.
‘I’ll explain when we get home,’ she said and, despite more pestering, she refused to talk about it. I could see Mike laughing quietly in the front as he listened to me trying to get some answers out of her.
‘It’s no good Lena, you’ll have to wait,’ he laughed. So I sat next to Jo and sulked all the way home.
At home we all bundled out of the car and sat in the lounge. ‘Now,’ I said to Jo, ‘what happened.’
She wasn’t playing now, she was serious. ‘I can’t tell you everything because I promised him,’ she said looking at us both. ‘It wasn’t just shyness, he was frightened of me.’
‘Frightened?’ I said surprised. I looked at Mike who just nodded.
‘He was, and probably still is, frightened that he won’t come up to my expectations. He sees me as an experienced woman so he’s worried he won’t be able to cut it.’
‘I thought it was more than just shyness,’ said Mike, ‘something happened to him didn’t it? Oh,’ he added, ‘I don’t need to know what. He’ll tell us if he wants to.’
‘Yes,’ Jo said, ‘something happened to him. He will have to tell you, OK?’
‘Of course Jo, you mustn’t breach his confidence,’ he said looking directly at me.
‘OK,’ I said reluctantly. I hate things like that! Still as long as Jo was happy everything was all right. ‘Did you ask him out to dinner?’ I asked.
She laughed, ‘I don’t think I’m that forward,’ she said. ‘No, he asked. Took him a bit of courage though,’ she added with a smile, ‘but he managed to get it out. I’m going to go slowly with him. I think that, if I push too hard, he might get scared again so a quiet dinner on Thursday will be fine. When we come back from Italy we can see where we go.’
Mike put his arm round her, ‘Has it been a good day?’ he asked smiling softly down at her.
She reached up and kissed him, ‘Oh yes, very good. Thanks for helping.’
‘I wasn’t much help really. I think you did all the important things. Do you really like him.’
‘Oh Mike, he makes me go all funny. A bit like you do,’ she said coyly looking into his eyes, ‘but with him it’s more intense. A couple of times I felt as if I was going to faint. His eyes do something to me, again like yours,’ she said touching his face. ‘He’s very like you,’ she said.
It was strange really, she said that in a funny way and I noticed just the slightest reaction from Mike but I didn’t think anything of it.
‘I’ve always treated him like a son,’ he said quickly, ‘and he spent all that time here. I think he’s picked up some bad habits.’
‘I hope they’re as bad as yours,’ I said laughing and he walked over and held me.
‘You,’ he said pointing at me and laughing, ‘are a minx.’
‘Mmm, I know,’ I said pouting at him outrageously, ‘but you do like minxes don’t you?’
With that he held me tightly to him and kissed me passionately. I could tell he was quite worked up now, he had something pressing to do!
‘Look you two,’ said Jo, ‘I think that you should be alone tonight.’
I was watching Mike’s face as she said this. Lots of emotions showed, relief, sadness, pleasure, worry. He obviously had lots of mixed feelings about what she said.
‘You don’t have to Jo,’ he said, ‘is it because of Guy?’
‘No you silly man, of course not. I still fancy you like hell and I can’t wait for Friday and the weekend. It’s just that you haven’t been alone like that together for a long time. You need to enjoy each other without me distracting you.’
He looked at her with affection shining from his eyes, ‘Are you sure. I can manage you know.’
Now we were getting to the point of his apparent reluctance, he was worried that she thought he wasn’t up to it. ‘Don’t be silly Mike,’ I said, ‘we know you can manage. You men and your pride. She asked me earlier and I said yes. I want you to myself today. It’s a bit selfish I know but Jo doesn’t mind.’
He smiled apologetically, ‘Sorry,’ he said then he looked at Jo. ‘I was going to ask you if we could be alone but I thought it might offend you,’ he said sheepishly.
‘We’ve got to sort this out,’ I said. ‘There will be times when two of us want each other without the third there. We can’t go through some silly motions to get there. We’ve got to be honest with each other and ourselves. Shall we make a pact now that we will say what we want and we won’t get upset. If we don’t I’m not sure we can deal with the problems. What do you say?’
They both looked at me, ‘You’re right,’ Mike said. ‘I’m sorry Jo, I should have had more courage and more faith in you.’
She pecked his cheek, ‘It doesn’t matter,’ she said, ‘and Lena is right. We must be honest with each other. All agreed?’
We all nodded together and the problem seemed to be dealt with. How it would pan out if Guy joined the arrangement I didn’t know.
‘I’m going to get changed then I’ll make some dinner. Just something light, OK?’
‘Mmm,’ we both said as she left the room.
