"As his personal lawyer, I am in charge of carrying out his will" she asserts "Mr. Doe, your great uncle has left you his estate, and enough funds to maintain it for 5 years."
"There must be some kind of mistake" you say. "I've never heard of this person"
"I understand the confusion Mr. Doe but I assure you are the right person. I am very thorough" Bella explains, peering over he glasses as she sorts through some papers in the briefcase.
Your mother turns to you as Bella sifts through the paperwork. Her doughy figure shifting on the couch. "Think about it John, this could be a big opportunity for you. You can get a real head start with all this. 21 years old and already a homeowner. Your dad and I are still paying the mortgage on this place" There's a glint of hope in her eyes, and a warm smile on her face.
"Well Mrs Drake, I'd like to know more" you say to the lawyer, who now has a few pieces of paper in her hands, which she hands over to you and your mother.
"It's Miss Drake, Mr Doe, but you may call me Bella if you would like. Hilltop Manor is just a few miles south of the city. It has all the amenities, water, power, internet, 16 bedrooms, 6 bathrooms, and plenty of living space. You will have me managing your funds, as you are expected to live there in order to receive any of the money your uncle has left you. You are free to do as you wish with the house, barring any significant construction or demolition. Also, I will be available at all hours, since your uncle has also paid for my retainer for the next 5 years." she explains to you.
Looking at the map she handed you, the manor really isn't too far from the city. You would still be able to see friends and family, or even invite them over. The photographs are odd however. From the outside, the place looks like a spooky haunted mansion, but the inside looks like a modern hotel almost. High ceilings, nice furniture. It all seems too good to be true. "Where do I sign?" you say, excited to receive your new home. Your mother beams at your decision. Bella hands you a few documents paper-clipped together, bright coloured post-it notes marker where you must sign and initial.
"So what did uncle Bertram leave the rest of us Miss Drake?" your mother asks as you sign your name across the pages.
"I'm sorry to tell you this Mrs. Doe, but none of the other members of this household appear in his will at all" replies Bella with dismay.
"So nothing? Nothing at all? What about John's sisters?" your mother asks.
"I'm sure they haven't been forgotten about Mrs. Doe, I will personally ensure to check through the documents again just for you" the lawyer says with a smile, lying through her teeth.
Once you're done signing the papers, you hand them back to Miss Drake. She swiftly checks through them, then puts them neatly into her briefcase.
"I suggest you get packing Mr. Doe, a van will be hear to collect your things first thing tomorrow." Bella says, standing from her seat and picking up her briefcase. You raise from your seat.
"Tomorrow?" you reply, quite loudly in surprise.
"Well yes, you did read the document you just signed, didn't you?" she smiles, holding out her hand "I shall see you at Hilltop Manor to welcome you to your new home"
You shake her hand.
"I suppose I will" you say, turning to look at your mother as the lawyer lets herself out.
Your mother looks up at you and smiles.
"This can only be a positive thing John. I'll start your laundry now so it's all ready for tomorrow. I'm so excited to see your new home!" she says excitedly, jumping up from the couch and making her way upstairs.
That night, you message your a few of your friends to tell them the news. Nearly all of them don't believe you, and the others just want to know when you're going to host a house party. You and your parents decide against telling your sisters anything for the time being, at least until Bella Drake has looked through the will again.
You lay in bed thinking about your new manor. You think every manor needs a maid to help keep it clean and tidy right? Perhaps Bella would be your maid? "Mr. Doe, I presume?" he asks
"That's me" you say. The man looks slightly sunburned and his hands are those of a working man.
"I'm Arty, I've been hired to help you move. My van's out front" he turns and points at a white transit van.
You say your goodbyes to your parents, and move your things into the back of the van with Arty. Your mother kisses you on the cheek and promises she will be there to visit soon. Your father gives you a firm handshake, pleased that his son has been given such a golden opportunity.
You sit in the passenger seat and wave as Arty pulls onto the road and begins to drive you out of the city, towards Hilltop Manor, your new home.
"I was your uncle's handyman John, just so you know" Arty says to try and break the ice.

The rest of the drive is fairly quiet. It takes roughly an hour and a half to get from your parent's house to Hilltop Manor.
It looks just like the photograph. The stone steps wind their way up the hill to the front porch of the old home. The house itself looks daunting, 3 storeys of brick and mortar. The windows are tall and narrow, the frames painted a dark brown, a stark contrast to the red brick. Arty urges you to head up, assuring you he will handle your belongings.
You grasp the iron gate and swing it towards you, making your way up the stairs. As you approach the door, you get the feeling you are being watched from inside. The large front door looks foreboding, but you muster up the will to clutch the knocker and knock on the door. After a short few moments, the door opens, and there stands Bella Drake, your lawyer.
"Come in Mr. Doe, welcome to your new home" she says sternly. It is only now you realise how tall and slender she really is. She is wearing a similar outfit to the one you saw her in yesterday, though this is a muted grey rather than black. Her heels click on the wooden floor as she leaves room for you to step in.
It is quite warm once inside, but not uncomfortable, and the decor does not match the exterior of the house in the slightest. You look around as Miss Drake guides you into the lounge, where there are two leather seats arranged next to a small table with various documents on.
You take a seat at the same time as Bella, and you hear Arty making his way into the building with your things.
"Mr. Doe, as I said, welcome to your new home, Hilltop Manor. You will be living here for 5 years, with me handling your finances, and Arthur handling any maintenance issues that may occur." she points to a document on the table. "Here is a floorplan of the estate, though you'll soon learn your way around." she points to another "and here are mine and Arthur's contact details. Do not hesitate to call us at any time"
You decide to speak up. "This is an awful lot to take in. What exactly do I do here?" you ask.
Bella chuckles "Well, you live here of course, you can do whatever you wish. Though I suggest you hire a maid, I've already put out an advertisement on your behalf. Potential employees should begin to show as early as noon"
Your ears perk up immediately. "A maid? I can have a maid?" you ask excitedly.
"Well yes, to help with the upkeep of the estate. Your great uncle Bertram had many servants. Now if there's no more questions, I really must be going Mr. Doe. I have to see another client at 11." Bella peers over her glasses at you.
Taking the hint, you allow her to leave. She gets up from her seat and leaves the room. You watch her hips sway in her pencil skirt from your leather armchair. After hearing her depart, you begin to explore the house for yourself, finding a fully stocked fridge in the kitchen where you make yourself a quick snack.
Just as you finish your snack, there is a knock on the door. You take a look at the clock on the wall. It is 12:04 pm. You have an interview to perform.
You quickly straighten yourself out as you head towards the foyer. You make your way to the front door.
