I then attached the gun holster and knife scabbard to my thighs and the lance and arrows to my back. I picked up my bow and returned to the others with my backpack on in case we needed to leave quickly. Thunner looked at me and asked, “You are ready?”
“Yes, if necessary.”
Then we heard a howl and crashing in the brush 100 yards ahead. The wolves started spreading out, “He was instructed to lead anything that detected him into us and we would have a trap.” So we spread out with two on each side of the line of return. Soon there was barking and crashing approaching us fast. I pulled an arrow and readied my bow, unclipped the gun on my side for quick removal and flip the switch to arm it.
I look across from me and saw the two there crouch low among the brush out of sight. I followed suit and retreated behind a larger bush. Soon the wolf came running out of the brush below, over the rock outcropping and straight through the camp. At the back end of the grassy clearing he slid to a stop and turned, lowered his head and bared his teeth, ready. I returned my attention to the direction he had just come and pulled the bow back ready to release an arrow. Then I quickly rethought that, lowered the bow and took out four more arrows, moved for a clear view and stuck them into the ground in front of me and readied myself just as the first dog came into view. He dropped where I saw him with an arrow sticking out of his forehead. The next dog was down with a shot in his mouth. The third got past but the fourth was down. I reload the bow and scanned where the dog went but saw more coming and felled another. I rearmed and waited. They were circling us. They saw the others fall. I again looked for the dog I missed. He was down with a wolf at his throat. He was done. I heard a snap behind me and spun and release the arrow in that instant. Another down. I could hear more but wondered if they had the stomach to continue given their losses. Then two jumped into the clearing and three wolves were on them. The fight was quickly over. We heard sounds moving away from us.
I put the bow around my neck and shoulder and pulled the lance, pushed the button and opened it to full length. I then went to each dog and sliced it open at the throat making sure they were dead. I retrieved the arrows. It almost seemed silly given how many I had at the lagoon but it was also silly to waste them.
I sat down and realized I was breathing very hard. I looked around and all the wolves were doing the same. I said, “That was certainly intense. Who was it that went out there and led them back?” He stepped forward. “Very well done. The way you came right through us and then stopped and took their attention away from us. Is that taught?”
Thunner said, “No, we don’t practice battle fighting, we hunt for food.”
“Well, I am even more impressed then. That was very fast thinking and action. I want to say, to all of you, that this was a surprisingly efficient and effective battle against a very dangerous and more numerous enemy.” I looked to the one who led the dogs in, “What is your name?”
He said, “Holden, Alexa. My name is Holden.”
I then went around the group and asked for the other two names so nobody was left out. I asked if anyone was injured. One was bitten on the leg and limped slightly. I retrieved my med-kit and treated him.
I looked to Thunner, “What is the plan then? I assume going to the pack and speaking further?”
“Yes, we will leave immediately.”
“Wait. Is there a stream or water nearby? I want to … clean up … before going. I … want to … reduce my scent … before we get to the pack.”

“And the females?”
“They would hate you.”

Thunner suggested we continue. When we reached the ‘number one’ he was with many others including the one that was injured yesterday. Finally, Thunner described my intention of originally coming to meet with the pack. He described the intent and purpose of the team I was looking for the pack to participate in. Number one turned to me and asked, “And why should we agree to join this team and put to risk our own for others?”
“Yes, the intention of the team is to provide assistance to others, but also it would be providing assistance to the pack. As evidenced today, the dogs and new people are a grave danger and a course of action must be assessed and working together is the best way. Your pack has members who have witnessed me and my mate assisting others for some time now. I do so today for the pack. Surely you recognize the dangers that exist now.”
Thunner spoke again, “Number one, I propose we assign the two she wants. The inter-species team will unite us all if need be.”
Number one looked to me again, “And who would you have on your team?”
I looked at the female who approached me and said to the group, “I request only mature males who are unmated, but certainly without family.”

“Because there is potential real danger involved by the members who will be in the front of potential conflict. And the reason for this whole effort is to secure a peaceful future for all. And the future is our young and families. It might be that the mated will be needed to join a fight if it threatens the pack.”
“Wise. Yes, I approve. So who will be members of this team?”
Thunner spoke up, “I will. I have lost my mate to the new people. I want to be with her.”
I look at him and then to the number one, “I like that. He is a good commander and brave.”
Holden then stepped forward, “I also wish to be a member.”
I looked at him and smiled, “Yes, he will be good, also.”
The number one said, “Then it looks like you have your team members.”
“Thank you.” I looked at the two and thanked them. I asked them to walk with me for a while. I explained that the rest of the team would be coming through in a few days to go the other mountain to make contact with the people and gorillas there. Perhaps we could also meet with the other pack, also. And I headed back to the lagoon. A successful trip but one will many dangers. As I walked, I couldn’t help anticipate my reunion with b**st. b**st offered, ‘Alexa, I think that trip to the other mountain could take more than a weeks’ time. It will take two to three days of hard travel to get there and then return. The time there should probably be one day for the village and another for the clan. If we are to also seek out this other creature, it could take several days just to find its nest or home and another day to determine if it can be useful and/or is willing. So, it could be easily from 11 to 13 days.’
‘That’s a long time to be away if we are taking the full team.’
‘I think we need to take the full team. This will be a long distance and time. None of us knows the route or what to expect. There could be significant danger. We know the new people are more active in that direction.’
‘No, I agree with you totally. It is just a long time. We now have a plan for securing this area and then we abandon it. I agree we need to go and we all need to go. Perhaps we should train a couple more males from the clan to patrol in our absence.’
‘That might be wise. But maybe we should just bring it up to Gongon. Up to a few weeks ago there wasn’t any patrol in existence. They may say they don’t need to worry for now. They will just be more vigilant as they go about their activities. We could tell the village the same.’

There was a long pause in the conversation and b**st could sense there was something else that he couldn’t quite discern. Because we communicated with each other through our mental thoughts, we had never needed to develop any verbal communication. But, even though it was mental, he couldn’t make sense of jumbled, disjointed thoughts. So he might pick up on a few thoughts but the context may not be clear. That was what was happening to him now. So he asked, ‘Alexa, there is something more. I can sense it but not able to make out what it is.’
‘This is what I have been mulling. The wolves we have seen. We have seen them quite a few times but always at a distance and always to the West. The sightings are not just fleeting, happenstance. Many times they are just sitting watching us but from a distance. They don’t seem to be afraid of us or a danger to us. Although I am sure they could be dangerous, they have done nothing to indicate they would to us.’
‘Yes, that is the same impression I have of them. So?’
‘So I want to know more about them. I want to see if I can make contact with them. They are a major mammal in the region. They would be high up in the food chain. Their range should be extensive. I think they could be extremely useful and have much knowledge of the new people’s movements and activity. And, they might also be willing participants for the core team. I think it is worth the chance and effort to determine these things.’
‘Okay, when should we go?’
‘No, I think just me. Your presence could be intimidating. I would expect it to be.’
‘That could be very dangerous. We think they don’t mean harm, but we don’t really know that.’
‘As I said, I think it is worth the chance. I will be careful. First contact will be from a distance, maybe from an elevated position of defense. And I will be fully armed. Are you okay?’
‘No, but I am just being protective and I know you are more than capable to take care of yourself.’
I made preparations for leaving in the morning. I packed a backpack with some supplies and tools including some rope in case I wanted to secure myself in a tree for the evening. I also packed a cover in case of weather change. Normally I could curl up with b**st and stay warm at night.
b**st walked me out through the tunnel. We covered some last minute details about my intended direction and area I hoped to find the wolves and their pack. If I wasn’t back in three days, he would be looking for me in that area. He watched me leave, heading west. I was likely to get further West than either of us had been before which will also provide good information about the island. I was dressed as usual for normal activities which is to say not very dressed. I was wearing battle boots which were created for me while on the Predator ship. I carried the bow in my left hand. My hair, having gotten to be very long, was loose and flowed over my shoulders hanging to mid back.
My journey had little definition. I knew I wanted to make contact with the wolves. I believed I could possibly encounter them just by going west. But I didn’t know how far or if I would intersect with their present location. I also didn’t know what else I might encounter along the way. And, I didn’t know if I would be able to communicate with them when/if I found them. Could I get them to let me be around them long enough for the processor to decipher the language pattern? And, what if they seemed dangerous and had watched from a distance only because they were afraid of b**st? What will happen without b**st’s presence? And the biggest question in my mind, if they are receptive, communicative, and supportive of the team effort, is there something bigger happen here that is bringing all this together? And what would that be?
I walked most of the day without seeing a trace of the wolves. The jungle gave way to a swampy area which I skirted. Wolves wouldn’t normally figure on the swampy areas and the water there wouldn’t do me much good. I knew I needed flowing fresh water for survival. I brought enough for the day but would need to replenish my supply. I was also beginning to think about what my camp might need to look like if I would need to spend the night out here on my own. I was following an a****l trail over a ridge and at the top stopped and scanned the area in front me. Then I saw one, then two and more. The first was sitting on an outcropping of rock just watching. The others were s**ttered around. Some were also just watching and others were moving but casually. Since I had a highpoint view, I squatted down to rest and to indicate my watchfulness, too. I took out the binoculars and scanned the wolves I found. I had no way of determining if I might be looking at the dominant wolf or not. But some were definitely larger than the others which I thought would come into play for determining the power order within a pack.
After all of us were just sitting watching each other for about 20 minutes, I noticed some anxiety in the wolves. They were clearly not expecting me to move through. I picked a large wolf out and left the trail, walking directly toward him. The walking now was much rougher and slower but I checked my direction repeatedly to maintain course to that one wolf. When I got within a hundred yards of him, I stopped and watched him more but not before scanning my surrounding for activity. After we were just watching each other for just a few more minutes, I did notice movement to my right and left. I unclipped the holster lock so the gun would come out cleanly. I left my right hand on top of the handle. When I saw a couple wolves on my right and left, I slowly eased the gun out of the holster and armed it, holding it relaxed along my right leg. I squatted down again and knelt with my right knee on the ground. When I did that the wolves all sat. I could hear the wolves making sounds among themselves and I hope the processor was working on it for communication.
Then I came fully alert when the wolf I had focused on stood and moved off his rock outcropping and winded his way down toward me. When he was about thirty yards from me, he stopped, watched me for a moment and sat, again. It almost seemed we were taking turns showing our interest and trust. So I stood, still with the gun held at my side, and moved ten yards closer. I was picking up more noise from them. Not sensing any more movement I knelt down. The noise was now back and forth. This was communication but I was not getting anything from the processor, yet. We all just watched each other. Then he got up and moved half way closer. We were still about ten yards apart. He sat.
“Where is the black one?” That came from my left. Okay, they were wary because they didn’t know where b**st was.
From my right, “What does it want? Why is it here? Why isn’t it afraid?”
I looked at the wolf in front of me and tried to communicate, “I am friend.” From the way they cocked their heads, that didn’t work right. I tried again, “I am friend.”
The one in front of me stood, “What?”

This was causing concern to them. How was this that this human could talk like them? I tried more, “I have come here for your help.”
He looked at me, cocking his head and looking at me carefully. “What help? Why you want our help?”
Success! We were communicating! Now if we could find a trust to hear each other’s words for their meaning and intent.
“You have seen me before. In the jungles to the east toward the other mountains. You have seen me with the black one. He is my friend. You have seen us fight the dogs. Fight the dogs for the people and for the gorillas.”
“Yes, we have seen these things. Why you fight for the others?”
“The dogs and the new people on the plains are a danger. The dogs have been a danger to the people and the gorillas to the east. That is where we live also. We helped because they needed it.”
“You and the black one are fierce fighters. You are dangerous to the dogs.”
“Yes, I am.”
“To us, also?”
“Not if you are not a danger to the people, gorillas or to us.”
The conversation went on like this with them asking questions about my involvement in these things, understanding why I would endanger myself. Back and forth. Then I started exploring their awareness of what was occurring around them. Yes, they knew about the dogs. Yes, the dogs were a danger. Yes, the new people were active near the other mountain. Yes, they were aware of the fights at the people village there. Yes, they were aware of gorillas being killed and captured. Yes, they were aware that people and other a****ls were being taken from the plains.
By this time I had long since re-holstered my gun and was more relaxed. Then everything changed in a flash. A very large but mangy wolf jumped into the mix. From the comments I was hearing being muttered, he was not welcome. This one scared me. I slowly unclipped the restraint for the knife on my left thigh and kept my hand there. Then the one I had mostly been communicating with said, “You have been banished and are not welcome here.”
The mangy one said, “So what. I go where I want. This female is mine. Whether I mate her or eat her makes no difference to me.”
Several made moves toward him which surprised me. They were now prepared to go into a fight for me? The one I talked to said, “Leave. She is under our protection. She came here in peace to seek our help. She will not be harmed by you.”
“Don’t be so sure.” And with that he swatted with a powerful swing and connected with the nearest wolf. Then he leaped. He had to be seven feet in the air. And directly toward me. Nothing was going to get to him before he got to me. And to me he did. But he landed on my blade which I thrust into his chest where I thought his heart would be and I rolled to the side and came up on top of him. Removing the blade I slammed it into his head and twisted the blade to inflict maximum internal damage. It was all over in a couple of seconds. And it was deathly quiet. I had killed one of them even if he was banished and intent to cause me harm. But he was dead. I stood and in the same motion unclipped the restraint on my gun and pulled it but let it hang at my side. I looked around me, turning to take in all the wolves. If I was going to die here, many of them would, too.
Then I heard, “What do they call you?”
“Alexa. My black friend is b**st.”
“Alexa, I am Thunner, number two in our pack. You can relax, Alexa. We do not consider his death a problem for us.”

I then looked around and asked, “Which of you was also injured by him?” He came forward, limping on his front right leg. I approached him and put my hand out for him to sniff me. I said, “I will not hurt you. But I want to look to your wound, also. This is a cream I use on my body to promote healing. Can I put some on your wounds?” He looked to Thunner and then nodded consent. I examined and cleaned the wounds with water from my container, applied an antiseptic wash, and then the salve. I put my hands on the sides of his head and said, “Thank you, for standing up to him.” I stood and looked at all of them and said repeated it, “Thank you, all of you, for moving to stop him.”
Thunner said, “But we didn’t stop him. He still got to you.”
“Yes, but you did try. The important thing is that you moved. Your movement to intercede caused him to refocus on you and took his attention off me. That was his mistake. That gave me the opening to kill him with minimal injury. So, I say again, thank you.”

They all looked to Thunner, “Yes, you are correct. Although we are uncertain of the number. There are two packs. This one and one on the other side of that mountain. But our pack has lost about ten either in capture and taken away or killed in trying to escape or to help the others.”
“So, you also feel the danger?”
“Yes, we do. But we are wolves, how do we combat an enemy like that? It might be better to hide.”

It will be good for the night and provide defenses.”
