I just grinned at my oldest daughter as she held up another Sports page from an old box of photographs and Sports pages, ‘State Romps Past University 104-52.’ The sub-heading read, ‘Freshman Sensations Andrews and Dobbier Lead the Way.’
I smiled as I read the first paragraph of the column, ‘State’s sensational duo of Sue Andrews and Nancy Dobbier continue to dominate opponents as Andrews scored a season high of 40 points while Dobbier scored 35. Junior captain Angie Smallys added 21 while Freshman Cathy Merricer added 8 as the Ladies of State for the first time in school history exceeded the century mark while improving to 6-0 as University fell to 4-2. Coach Jones was equally impressed by the defensive performance of Freshman Donna Logany as she teamed up with Captain Angie Smallys to hold University’s top recruit and scorer, Paula Smith, without a field goal. Smith, who had been averaging 17 points a game was held to three points in the contest.’
The photo next to the heading brought back memories as five former Dragons’ were pictured together after the Ladies of State beat University my freshman year. I smiled as I remembered my first 40-point game in college and the State student newspaper taking the photo for our hometown newspaper, ‘The Dragon Gazette.’ The text under the photo read, ‘Former Dragons unite after State’s victory over University. Pictured left to right, University Cheerleader, Debbie Ferguson, State Freshman, Sue Andrews, Donna Logany, and Cathy Merricer alongside University Cheerleader, Mary Ann Johnson-Smith.’
Nancy smiled at me as she held up a photograph of State’s first ever Final Four team my freshman year. ‘Mom, Coach Angie told me, ‘y’all were the best freshman class to ever play at State—you, Dr. Nancy, Dr. Donna along with Cathy.’ Y’all must have been pretty salty back in the day, huh Mom?’
I just smiled at my daughter, ‘We were! Only lost one game our freshman year and that was in the Semi Finals to the defending National Champions, Bears 76-73. We didn’t lose again until the Finals my senior year in double overtime to the Huskies and that was questionable as Nancy let one fly from forty feet as time expired and it swished the nets, but the refs ruled she didn’t get it off in time, so we lost 89-88.’
Nancy replied, ‘WOW! Mom, you could have had three National Championship rings along with four Conference Championship rings!’
I grinned at my daughter, ‘Your Dad has two National Championship rings, four Conference Championship rings along with two Sugar Bowl rings and a Cotton and Orange Bowl ring. Now, put up these old Sports pages and photographs and get ready.’
Nancy continued shuffling the photographs and sports pages, ‘Mom, how come Daddy didn’t go to the NFL like Uncle Larry?’
I smiled, ‘Your Dad could have, he was drafted in the third round by the Giants after his senior season. Your Dad had just completed his first year in law school, and we decided law school and becoming an attorney was more important to us than a couple years in the NFL. So your Dad stayed in law school at State and became a Graduate Assistant coach for Coach Lewis while I finished my senior year. I sighed a deep sigh, ‘Your Grandmas shouldn’t be telling you things that didn’t concern them over twenty two years ago! Now, get ready, I don’t want to be late!’

Tears once again swelled in my eyes as I remembered those trying times and read the column while looking at the picture of Tom being carried off the field, ‘Freshman quarterback, Billy Lucas came off the bench along with the injured Tom Sanders and together the duo ignited a 96-yard touchdown drive in the closing minutes to give State the outright Conference Championship. Sophomore running back Eddie Simmons powered over the goal line from the two-yard line with 6 seconds remaining clinching State’s second consecutive Conference Championship.
‘Sanders, a two-time All Conference tight end and this year’s Honorable Mention All American performer accounted for 84 of the 96 yards with six receptions and a dazzling 17-yard run to the University 2-yard line where he was sandwiched between two University defenders and suffered a possible season-ending injury as Sanders was carried off the field on a stretcher. Sanders suffered broken ribs late in the first half due to a flagrant personal foul and returned to the game against physician’s orders to help propel 10th ranked State’s winning touchdown drive before an overflow standing room only crowd of 58,200 at State Stadium.
‘State, 9-2, losing in their first two games to non-conference powerhouses Irish, 37-21 and Trojans 29-24, rolled to nine consecutive conference victories and accepted a bid following the game to play New Year’s afternoon in the Cotton Bowl against the 9-0-2, and the #4 ranked Razorbacks. The status of Sanders for the Cotton Bowl remains doubtful as Sanders was immediately transported to State Medical Center with a punctured lung.
‘University unbeaten and ranked #2 before the contest suffered their first loss of the season and will be denied an opportunity to play for the National Championship despite the heroics of Freshman of the Year, quarterback Larry Thompson. The Topeka, Kansas, native completed 34 of his 40 passes for 412 yards and three touchdowns in the losing effort. University, 10-1, 8-1 in conference play accepted a bid to play in the Orange Bowl New Year’s night against the Hurricanes, also 10-1 and ranked #5 while the unbeaten, Irish, 11-0, and Trojans,11-0, will square off in the Rose Bowl for the National Championship.’
The picture next to the headlines read, ‘State’s Tom Sanders is shown being carried off the field as an ‘unidentified coed’ is embracing the fallen warrior as they enter the ambulance while two University cheerleaders embrace each other as they watch in disbelief.’
I wiped the tears from my eyes as I remembered looking over at Debbie and Mary Ann while entering the ambulance as Tom was gasping for air while the paramedics placed an oxygen mask over his face. I regained my composure and repeated in a stern voice, ‘Nancy Ann, I said ENOUGH! Now put up these old photographs and Sports pages and get ready!’
Nancy replied, ‘Mom, I’m not as naïve as people think just because I would rather ride Midnight, barrel race, and shoot hoops instead of going out with some of the jerks in this town. Nancy answered back like an aggressive attorney trying to prove a point to the jury, not giving the witness an opportunity to respond, ‘Mom, I sense tension so thick you can cut it with a knife, when Aunt Sally, Uncle John, Aunt Debbie, you and Daddy are all together in a room like at Christmas time. Something happened between y’all since you and Aunt Debbie were like sisters ever since the first grade, closer than Audrey and me—more like me and Elaine, and Aunt Sally was a big sis to both of you. Daddy, well, he and Uncle John grew up inseparable since the second grade. Nancy questioned as she held up the wedding party’s picture from the ‘Dragon Gazette,’ Tommaso Diablo (Tom) Sanders and Susanna Elizabetta (Sue) Andrews were married on August 10th before a small party of friends and relatives in State’s Mother of God Catholic Church. I just looked at our wedding picture without saying a word while Nancy continued to attack her mother with a concluding question like I’ve done numerous times to a helpless witness.
‘Mom, even though y’all made up and agreed to forget what happen and not to mention it again, after all these years, you, Daddy, Aunt Debbie, Aunt Sally, and Uncle John still feel guilty about fucking each other, don’t you?’
