I walked down to the school and managed to reach the premises just before 8:00 am. Today was the first day of classes for this year, and I hoped to do better than before in studies and extra-curricular activities. The scholarships for university depended on my performance in the school and I desperately needed one if I was to study at the university. Getting better at studies was possible if someone helped me with it and who better than the toppers or ‘the nerd club’ as they were called, to help me out.
“Morning sir,” I greeted Mr. Adams, our teacher as we met in the corridor before the class.

The afternoon classes went the same way as the morning classes, with teachers explaining study plans in detail. At long last, the clock struck 3:00 pm and the school was off for the day.
“Hey Nathan!” I said loudly to Nathan from behind as he left the classroom, “Wait up.”
Nathan seemed surprised that I even knew his name, much less wanted to talk to him. More so because we were in two largely different social groups. He belonged to the nerd club and I was more or less part of the popular people group. Being good in sports definitely helped me being popular.
“Hi Emily,” Nathan replied, surprised if not shocked that I wanted to talk to him, “What can I do for you?”
“How you doing?” I asked, making small talk with him before stating my purpose.
“Good, thanks,” he answered, walking to the school gate, “How about you?”
“I’m good too,” I replied, catching up with him, “So, how was your vacations?”
He looked at me as if I had said something obnoxious. He looked around to see if anyone was looking at us.

I was taken aback by his question, thinking about what could he mean.

“Well don’t take it wrong alright,” I said as we sat on the bleachers in the ground, “I was wondering if you could like, you know, tutor me from time to time. I have a really hard time understanding some of the stuff, well most of the stuff we cover in class, and you are so good at it.”
“Seriously?” he looked at me quizzically.
“Yeah, yeah,” I said looking in his eyes, “I’m really bad at studies as you can probably guess by my grades, and I really need to pick up the slack if I am to have any chance at going to university.”
“Wow!” he sat back, listening to me, “I mean you must be pretty desperate to come to me for help.”
I looked at him, he wasn’t making fun of me but rather weighing in the reality where this conversation was going.
“I will pay you for lessons if that’s what you want,” I said to him hopefully.
“Just don’t name a price too high, I’m not rich or anything,” I said laughing.
Nathan laughed for the first time hearing my joke.
“Nah!” he replied, “Don’t worry about the money. I will tutor you at my place whenever you feel the need.”
“Really?” I said happily, “Phew, thanks man. I was so worried. And I’m sorry if I caused you any trouble or anything in the past, never meant it you know.”
“Yeah, it’s okay,” he said getting up, “You were alright. So, I will see you tomorrow after school then?”
“Yup, tomorrow after school,” I said, getting up as well.
“So, friends?” I asked, putting my hand forward.
“Friends,” he replied, shaking my hand.
“Well, that went well,” I thought to myself as I went to the changing rooms.
I changed into the blue training top and black training capris and headed off to the soccer ground where Liam and the rest were already waiting for me.
“Took you long enough,” Alex asked, looking at me.
“Yeah, had some stuff to take care of,” I replied as I stretched.
For the next one hour, I practiced playing soccer with Liam and others. As I sat down drenched in sweat, drinking from the water bottle, Alex came up to me.
