Chapter one- the demons plan
“The master will soon return to us and we will finally have the victory the ancients denied us, all those centuries ago.”
As the cloaked figure finished speaking and sat back down another stood up and stepped forward.
“It may not be that simple my lord, the ancients will attempt to stop us again and this time they have help.”
“They will fail to stop us.”
“They are a group of beings known only as the hunters. No-one seems to know much about them. All we know is that they have existed for thousands of years and they control powerful creatures born of the dark world and there are always seven of them.”
“Then we will need to recruit champions of our own, we cannot fight the ancient forces as well as these hunters.”
“they also have a hybrid, our informant seems unconcerned but when i heard the name, I thought again, they are bringing 'him' back. We will need to tread very carefully if we are to avoid him destroying us all.”
“Plans for our ‘recruits’ are already in place. We will have our soldiers within three weeks and they will be ready to destroy the hunters by the time I have finished with them.”
“Very well chromos. Find the warriors and do it quickly.”
“By your command, it will be done.”
With that the one known as chromos left the cavernous meeting chamber and headed to the archive building to find the greatest warriors in history to fight the hunters and ancients.
“Commander Chromos, what information do you seek today?”
“Get me all information available on these individuals, whatever the source. Rumours, legends, witness accounts, everything. I need to know exactly when and where they could be found.”
“As you wish, some of the information will be hard to locate, we could send the information on to your facility when the search is completed if that would make things simpler.”
With that chromos left for the facility he had set up in the mountains and arrived to find everyone busy working on the machines he had designed for this mission.
“Ah commander, as you can see, the devices are nearly completed, and do you have the files yet?”
He told the scientist what the archivist had said and told them to continue working on the machines before reporting back to the council of demon elders.
“You are sure that this can work?”
“Once we have the data, then it will be easy to find them. Turning them into loyal soldiers will be more difficult but I have a plan on how to do that.”
“Then proceed with the plan commander and keep us apprised of your progress.”
“As you command.”
Once the link chromos headed back to the lab to finish the brainwashing program, it was several days before he believed he had a working program and he entered the main chamber to find that the data had been received and that they were preparing people to go back and retrieve the targets.
Meanwhile, far away
“I’m getting worried predator, hunter’s last report seems to suggest the demons are planning something big, he says that one of them journeyed to the central archive and has acquired information on several of the greatest heroes of a planet called earth.”
“Perhaps we should contact shadow, if the demons are gathering an army, then we will need him and his hunters.”
“We gave him our word that we would leave him in peace after the last battle.”
“I am aware of that and I would not call on him unless we had no other choice.”
“Very well, but who do we send?”
“How about phoenix, the two of them were fairly close, as far as I recall.”
“True, but phoenix is missing, presumed to have been killed in that last battle against the demon master.”
“Then send leviathan, he was always kinder to her than to the rest of us.”
“Can you blame him, after what we did to him?”
“I suppose not, contact leviathan, it is time we reached out to him and made our peace."
Chapter 2
I was sitting by the river watching the birds and fish when I heard her walking over.
“What are you doing here? I thought they had agreed to leave me alone.”
“I know and I’m sorry to disturb you, but there is a problem and you and your hunters may be the only ones that can help us.”
“I’m sorry, but the answer is no, after what they did to me, they’re lucky I don’t hunt them down and destroy them.”
“They wish to apologise, won’t you at least hear them out?”
“I’m sorry, if I see them again, I will kill them!”
“I had hoped not to have to do this, but do you remember what you said to me before that last battle?”
“Let me guess, you want me to do this as repayment for you saving my life?”
“That’s right, we need your help, and there really is no other choice.”
“Fine, I’ll meet them, but I still may decide not to help them.”
“I understand.”
“And after this, we’re even.”
“If that’s what you want, how soon can you be ready to travel?”
“Give me twenty minutes to pack a few things.”
“Fine, I’ll wait here, and shadow?”
“Yeah?”
“It’s good to see you again.”
As she said that I began walking back to the house to collect my weapons and deck, just in case. I never really trusted the ancients and I wanted to be prepared just in case.
“The journey will take a few days so we should stop here for supplies.”
I looked at the map and saw that leviathan was pointing to a small town near the coast.
“No, that town is too dangerous, we’d be better off taking a slightly longer route and stopping for the night in this town near to the forest, by the river.”
“How long would that add to the journey?”
“Somewhere between twelve and fifteen hours, depending on how long it takes us to get the supplies.”
As we were getting closer to the town, I looked over at leviathan and saw that she looked like she wanted to ask me something.
“Is something wrong? You look like you want to ask me something.”
“There is something the others were talking about that I’ve been wondering about.”
“What is it?”
“Well, it’s about phoenix. I know the two of you were close friends and I don’t believe he really died after that battle. I guess what I’m trying to say is do you know what really happened?”
“You’re right to doubt what the others told you, he’s not truly dead, but he’s not exactly alive either.”
“What do you mean?”
“Well, are you aware that an ancient can effectively give their power and memories, effectively give their soul to another living being?”
“I had heard stories from the elders that talked about that but I never really understood it.”
“Well, it basically allows the ancient to live on past death and it allows the other being to call on their power and knowledge when they need it.”
“Why are you telling me this?”
“I’ll explain everything, but please, bear with me. The process always leaves a mark on the recipient, depending on which ancient gave them their power. Do you know what phoenix’s symbol was?”
“Yeah, though I couldn’t describe it, I would definitely know it if I saw it again.”
When she said that I rolled up my sleeve and showed her the markings on my arm and smiled when I heard her gasp.
“So that’s what happened to him!”
“Yes, it was the only way to save him and his knowledge, there was a price to be paid to gain this knowledge but if it lets his power help people for even a little longer, then it was worth it.”
“You realise that I will have to inform the others of this, don’t you?”
“I know, that was part of the reason I didn’t want to go with you.”
“You were worried about what the others would say?”
“Yeah, phoenix cared a lot about what they thought and I guess his memories have more of an influence than I like to admit.”
“You don’t need to worry about that. There’s a reason phoenix got away with so much when he was alive. The others tried to stop him once and he almost destroyed them without even breaking a sweat. He was always the most powerful of all of us, except for the fallen one. And if you have even half of his power then I don’t think the others will be willing to risk a fight.”
“Alright, in that case, let’s go.”
“hold on a second, you said there was a price to be paid for gaining the knowledge, what price?”
“the recipient of his power must continue on and finish the mission the ancient died for.”
“and what mission was that?”
“I must find a way to destroy what you know as the fallen one.”
“then it seems that you’ll need our help.”
“you’re right, I’ve had the other hunters looking for anything they can find on the fallen one but so far, they haven’t found anything.”
By the time we had finished gathering what supplies we thought we would need it was getting late so we headed away from the markets to try and find somewhere to stay for the night. Eventually we found a small place down a side street that seemed to be quiet enough so we stayed there until sunrise and looked at the map again when we got up.
“we’re still several weeks away from our destination. We’ll need to carry on through the night if we’re going to make it in time.”
I thought for a moment and recalled something I had once seen phoenix do.
“maybe not, there’s a trick that phoenix showed me once, a few months before he died. If I can get it right, we should end up right where we need to go in a matter of seconds.”
“really? What do we need to do?”
“all I need you to do is to concentrate on any memories of the place where we’re supposed to meet the other ancients.”
“how will that help you?”
“I can use those memories to find the place and then I can create a portal to take us straight there.”
“I never knew phoenix could do that!”
“well, it’s not something that he really felt safe telling anyone about, if the enemy found out he could do it, then they would have been constantly hunting him and those close to him.”
“I understand, so all I have to do is remember where we are going?”
“Yes, in as much detail as possible. I must admit, I haven’t tried using another persons memory for this, although the process itself does work.”
With that I concentrated the power inside me and focused on creating a stable tunnel leading to the meeting place.
When we came out the other side we looked around and I saw predator and someone I knew only as the avenger walking in.
“We detected the portal but we never thought you’d be stupid enough to come straight here.”
“We didn’t, we went through four other portals before we got here, I used a time shifter on the last one so it would seem as though it was instant, but in reality it was more like an hour.”
“Okay shadow, I’m impressed, but how did you know how to do that?”
I took a deep breath and told them everything I had told leviathan about phoenix and what he had done.
“Well, that explains a lot.”
“Anyway, what did you call me here for?”
“we have reason to believe that the demons are attempting to bring back the fallen one and they have recruited several warriors to help them.”
“do you know which warriors have been recruited?”
“we have a list here somewhere, if you would wait here, I will retrieve it.”
a few moments later he left and I wondered,not for the first time, just what I was letting myself involved in. -->
