My name is Tom Williams. At least it used to be, until last summer.
That was when my best friend, John Dortmer and I got into some trouble.
We weren't doing anything that bad, just a couple of kids acting up in the
summer school break. We were skipping stones across a pond when one
accidentally hit this man walking across the water. Yes, I know that sounds
crazy, but he was doing just that. He was an old guy with a long white beard
and a dark blue robe on. The rock hit him in the knee and he got real mad. He
called me and John a long name in a strange language and told then told us
we would be sorry. He knew our names and he knew who our parents were.
John said he had never seen the guy before and I didn't know him either. We
figured he was a friend of our parents. John and I had gotten in trouble the
week before when we had broken a window throwing rocks at a soda can.
We thought it was safe to throw rocks in the pond. Now we were worried.
We could get grounded for the rest of the summer. John started running after
the old guy to apologize.
We caught up to him and he was still limping. We told him we were
real sorry but we didn't see him and we really didn't want to get in trouble.
The old guy asked if we ever went to the mall. I said sure, we go to the
movies there. He told us to come to his store one day and if we helped him in
the store for an hour each, he wouldn't call our parents.
We said yes. We felt so much better. John said "no more rocks" I
agreed. We went to the mall that weekend to see the new Bruce Willis movie.
After the movie we went to the old man's store. He had given us a card and it
took a while to find it. It was called Spells- R- Us. We liked magic tricks and
hoped we could earn enough to buy a trick each. The old man was there
when we walked in and he wasn't limping anymore. We were very polite and
called him sir. He seemed like a nice old guy. He had us dust the store and
sweep the floor and then mop it. We worked fast and got done in less than an
hour. We asked what else he wanted. He said he was satisfied and he was
glad he didn't need to teach us a lesson.
John asked if he had any magic tricks we could buy. The old man
shook his head and said he had no tricks that we would want. John didn't
like the answer. John was kind of a dummy at times. He would let his mouth
get him in trouble. He smarted off to the old guy and said his shop was full
of junk. The old guy got real quiet. He asked John to apologize or learn a
hard lesson. John called him an old fart. The old guy shook his head and
said he was wrong, we did need a lesson.
I was going to leave and go home, I wanted to leave very badly right
then. The only problem was; I couldn't move. John was frozen in place too.
The old man waved his arms around and said something I didn't understand.
Then everything went dark.
When the lights came on again, I was standing in the mall next to
this real pretty blonde haired girl. She was about my age, and was wearing
tight blue jeans and a T-shirt just like the one John had on. She turned
around and looked at me and asked who I was. I told her my name was Tom.
My voice sounded funny though. She was looking at her hands, they had
pink fingernail polish on her nails but they weren't very long. She put her
hands on her chest and squeezed her small breasts. I was amazed. I had
never seen a girl do that in public before. I was only 12 and girls didn't
interest me yet. She looked at me and started crying. I got scared, what had
I done?
"What's wrong?" I asked.
She said, " Look in that mirror," and pointed to a mirror on a pillar
outside a dress shop. I walked over and looked in the mirror at a pretty, red
haired girl wearing a short denim skirt and a T-shirt just like the one I had
on. This girl had slightly larger breasts than the other girl.
"The blonde girl walked over and said, " The old man turned us into
girls, Tom" that's when I knew the other girl was John.
No one else remembered us being boys named John and Tom except
ourselves. Everyone thought we were girls named Jennifer (John) and Teresa
(me). We looked for the store in the mall for 3 hours. We still go to the mall
but we stopped looking for the store after we each had our first date with a
boy. It wasn't a real date, we just agreed to meet the boys at the mall and
they took us to the movies. It was strange holding hands with a boy for the
first time but we both got used to it. Jenny kissed her date on the check after
the movie. She seems to have gotten used to being a girl faster than me.
I used to go fishing and hunting with my father and brother, now I go
shopping with my mother and sister. It used to be boring but I really enjoy it
now. Jenny's parents had been divorced before the change and John wanted
to live with his father. Now Jenny would rather stay with her mother. It's no
big thing really, they only live a block apart.
We both get better grades now but we spend more time on the phone.
I used to earn money mowing yards, now I baby-sit. John liked to build
model ships and planes, now he likes to sew and do needle point.
Jenny isn't the smart mouth John used to be and I can't throw a rock
like I used to. I, well, I throw like a girl now. I kind of wish we had just
gotten grounded for the summer but it could be worse. At least we're pretty.
Jenny is going out for cheerleader next year and I think I will too.
