Intro: Three years ago Pretzelgirl wrote a story called "oldtimer in the SRU universe. It was probably one of the best SRU stories written except for the ending. My apologies if I don't do justice to her work. SRU Oldtimer part 2: Second Chances By Reality Check 'She gasped in abject horror at gnarled, withered hands still sporting long bright pink nails. Her chin widened, sprouting a cracked, weedy, sun-reddened texture. The candy-striper's petite nose exploded into a ruddy, misshapen bulge, while her verdant eyes paled and grew watery, red-lined, and acquired a washed-out bluish hue. Her wavy, chestnut hair withered into a short, winter-white dusting across her rough scalp. A single tear ran down the old candy-striper's left cheek as she saw she'd become him again: a ridiculous-looking old clown in a young nurse's clothes.' --- The old wizard nearly dropped his scrying device as he saw what happened he scratched his beard and thought for a moment... "Danni..." The wizard looked quite beside himself with concern. "Yes Chief." Dannie still working on that inventory... always inventory... popped her head in. He said nothing just pointing at the scrying glass rewinding and playing it again. Dannie just jumped back in a mixture of horror and astonishment... "That wasn't supposed to happen... I followed the spell just right." She gasped. "You used your hair as the magical agent didn't you?" The Wizard said going to his books... "Yes." she said sheepishly. "When the oldtimer tried to repeat the spell using one of his hairs generated by the spell..." The wizard said. "The magic was undone... the poor man." Dannie gasped. "If it was just him... we could still write it off... but "Danielle" was helping people and you know I need good karma with the wizards council audit coming up in 10 years." He said. "What do I do now?" "Study up... this is going to take a bit more work to get right but remember we don't have a lot of time." Three years later... "I figured it out!" Danni exclaimed. "It's too late... Collins died last year." the wizard said sort of a surprisingly sweet tone. "It's too late to save Collins now... but we can save the oldtimer." Although the wizard could read Danni mind... he still wanted her to explain it. "The reason the spell didn't work properly was because I tried to make him into another Danni..." Danni exclaimed. "And?" Wizard smirked. "There's only room in this universe for one me... also I wasn't powerful enough to put an old man back to full youth." She grinned. "You have a cunning plan?" The wizard raised an eyebrow... "If I can't bring youth to the oldtimer... I'll bring the oldtimer to youth." She grinned. Oldtimers house He rarely went out anymore since the embarrassment, most people didn't even remember Danielle but they did remember the oldtimer in drag. "What do you want... I was happy... I was making other people happy you took it away." he said bitterly. "Mr. Robert Franklin... all that youth... and all you wanted to do was be a nurse... why?" Danni asked... that was the one thing that intrigued her most of all... not rich and powerful... not famous just a nurse, she wondered A normally crotchety old man spoke tenderly about his sister who was working as a nurse in London during the war... how sweet and kind she was and how she died only three months before the war ended when she had a ceiling collapse on her... he was only a few yards away when it happened. "Would you trade places with her if you could?" Danni asked. "Could you imagine all the people she could help... in a heartbeat but she's dead and there's nothing you can do about it." The oldtimer said. "In a heartbeat... huh." she said she stuck out a finger and touched him on the chest with her finger... === He was startled by an explosion... a bomb hit the hospital... wait he looked at his hands... no he was still a guy. He looked over and saw his sister Jenny ALIVE! "Hi bobby, what are you doing here?" She was talking to a pretty blond nurse... then he remembered! It was 1945... he saw the ceiling start to give way... He leapt pushing the two nurses out of the way as the ceiling collapsed upon him... at least his sister would live... All was black for what seemed an eternity... "Nurse are you alright... what's your name?" "Bobby." He said... wait what's wrong with my voice... "Jenny, I don't know how to tell you this, your brother is dead." the doctor said. "What!" Robert sat up in bed, the pretty blond was in tears. "Your brother... he saved us both." She said hugging her. Robert was aware he now had breasts... and he looked at the mirror in the room. He was Jenny! Then he remember Jenny and the senior nurse on duty had been killed that day... when he was visiting... then he realized in trading places nothing had been made better, Jenny died anyway. Bobby now Jenny spent the night staring out into space... "Why?" "Your sister was supposed to die... it was her time. Sometimes we have wiggle room, I didn't have it in this case." Danni Appeared next to him. "You could have put me into the body of Nurse Collins... " he said thinking what a nice dish she was... "Ummm... no I couldn't. Miss Collins died because of random chance when you saved her... she stayed with her body ... your sister it was fate. She suffered a head injury." Danni leaned over and whispered in her ear. "There are some things even the Wizard cant do." "You said I could trade places with her... I wanted her to live and help people." He said with tears in his eyes. "You did... she still can... well you can. It's not like I can put you back in your old body anyway... its not there anymore." Danni said... "What are you talking about?" The new girl asked. "It's one of those little sideffects of what I did or more correctly what you did... you aren't there in 2005. Your body died in 1945, no one remembers you... when I return home I may not even remember you. The wizard will, he doesn't forget anybody." She said. "My body died in 1945?!? I can't live in 1945... in this body!" the new Jenny exclaimed. "Oops time to go." Danielle said as she faded into nothingness... The night nurse came in... "It's okay, it's okay... I have something to calm you down." She said sticking a needle in her arm. Ahhhhh... morphine you can always count on zzzzzz... The next morning... He looked into the mirror, Jenny's brown curls her soft features her hazel eyes, and her flaws... all his... well hers now. She got up and decided to take a shower... the body of Jenny Franklin was so bursting with energy, as the water hit her she gasped... she remembered doing this as Danielle but this was different. It was like the body fit her better... it felt more real even though the breasts were smaller and the butt was bigger. The energy that flowed through her was more intense. Her body was that of a girl not even 21. She would miss peeing standing up... but not that much. Nurse Collins stopped by... she was a nice looking lady... a fact that had been made completely irrelevant by the changes of the last day. They were chatting... a lot of stuff "Jenny" couldn't remember... she thought might have taken a knock to the head. Nurse Collins had sprained her ankle and was on crutches. Another nurse popped in. "Nurse Collins, your husband is here to see you." Sergeant Collins came in with his duty uniform on... he gotten leave to see his wife after he heard about the accident. "Hi honey... I heard there was a close call." Nurse Collins looked mortified and dragged him out into the hall. He quickly took off his hat... and kneeled by "Jenny's" bed. "Miss Franklin, I'm so sorry about your brother, if it's any consolation he died a hero. My wife talks about you, she said you were going to become an RN after the war ends." He said. "No, after this I've decided to do something else... being a nurse isn't enough not after what Bobby did for me." the new Jenny replied. "Oh?" Nurse Collins asked a bit disappointed. "I'm going to be a doctor..." Jenny said which produced a big smile on Nurse Collins face and a kind of repressed grin on Sgt Collins face. "A lady doctor? That's going to shake up the army." He guffawed. His wife jabbed him in the ribs... "Dr. Franklin, I presume." Nurse Collins giggled. "Jenny" liked that... and Jenny would have liked that too. After she was discharged, she rode home on a plane back to New York city. On board was a wounded vet with a sweet voice and a charming smile named Richard Pickford. A buddy of his had gotten him a job up in New York state with a company making tabulators, not much pay but a great future in business machines. Jenny had to admit being female changed the way she looked at men. As "nurse Danielle" comforting men much older than her she was compassionate... however as Jenny a young woman with a man close to her own age, a different set of emotions came up... Robert wasn't gay in the least... but HE wasn't Robert anymore. SHE was Jenny... They talked during the flight and during the stopovers in Greenland and Newfoundland... Jenny had forgotten how slow and uncomfortable planes used to be. As they got off the plane, they exchanged addresses and phone numbers... and he did something that surprised herself... he kissed her, on the lips. She embraced him and had a tear in her eye... Robert should have been disgusted... but SHE wasn't, it felt natural for Jenny Franklin to be kissed like that. She remembered being kissed like that on her sixteenth birthday, wait that wasn't his memory... that was hers. He was confused for a moment. Then it dawned on him... even though it was his mind, it was her body and her brain! It was natural for some of her memories to be there... even these memories. The he realized he wasn't just remembering her memories he was starting to forget his old memories... not the important things but the details of his old life... Three months later the war ended and Jenny went to see Rick, he had written her everyday. He was able to walk with a cane and he had gotten his job with that company in New York. He told her that meeting her had given him the hope he needed to get that job. She embraced him and kissed him passionately... by then "Robert" was a memory almost one of those past lives she remembered reading about. As they made love the transformation of her life was complete... except for one detail. Apparently the next morning "He" woke up as an old man... looking down at his shriveled old body and laying next to a 80 year old Rick... "EEIEIEIEE!!!" "Honey... its a dream... snap out of it." Rick said. She woke up screaming and in a cold sweat! Rick grabbed her and held her... it was a dream... she was still Jenny it was still 1945, she could tell because it was 80 degrees at 8 o'clock in that August morning with no air conditioning... homes wouldn't have AC for another 10 years. On the bright side, there would be no TV to distract him for another 5 years... time for more fun. Afterwards... he pulled out a cigarette... she grabbed the cigarette out of his mouth, "No... I will not have the man I'm going to marry... smoking." Jenny grinned. "Marry? Who said I was going to marry you?" Rick grinned. She remembered something she had seen in a dirty movie in the 1970s... it was something most good girls in the 1940s would never do. Fortunately Jenny had never been a good girl in the 1940s before... Three weeks later Jenny Franklin became Jenny Pickford --- 60 years later Collins was lying in bed, he still had aches and pains but at least he was in his own home. His wife was reading the newspaper and talking with an old family friend... "Dr. Pickford." Patricia smiled. "Please Just call me Jenny, I retired 10 years ago." She said... her husband Rick and her had just had their 60th wedding anniversary ... he was the perfect husband (except for the golf pants) she had 3 kids, and lots of grandkids. Her youngest granddaughter had just finished nursing school, and she might even see great-grandchildren soon. "Isn't it funny how all this happened because your brother sacrificed his life for us 60 years ago." "Why is that funny?" Jenny wondered not disagreeing. "Think about it... one thing changes everything. One persons life affects so many others." She said drinking her tea... At the nursing home "Good morning Bobbie." The new nurse, Bobbie Collins was so cheerful... her grandmother had worked at the nursing home for 30 years until 10 years ago, now as the youngest daughter she had a chance to follow in her grandmothers footsteps. Of course she was a nurse practitioner not a doctor like her grandmother ... the nursing homes wanted those now. Life was funny... She had gone off to college only to wind up marrying the grandson of her grandmothers best friend from the war. She was sure her grandmother had set them up... but she could never prove it. Meanwhile back at the store... Danni was still doing inventory "Danni... " The wizard smiled in his bathrobe... "Yes boss." She asked. "Take the rest of the day off." He said. "Huh? What did I do to deserve this?" She wondered. The wizard just smiled... Danni doesn't remember... he does... he's a wizard. The he looked in the inventory book... "Robert Murphy: sold 1 nurses uniform." paid in full. He thought to himself about Mr. Murphy now Mrs. Collins... Then he smiled and thought to himself. "Just because this was a happy ending doesn't mean I can't have some fun..." He smiled closing the book... THE END
