It always disturbed Ralphie Lawrence a little bit when he encountered an
Outsider. It was a fairly uncommon occurrence, but certainly not unheard
of. In this day and age, it was not possible to be completely isolated from
the outside world, but the people of the town of Maryton did what they
could to ensure that intrusions were minimal. He remembered vaguely
something about a people called the Amish, and knew there were some
similarities. He knew Maryton was a town founded on a belief, and that
Mary Ashford came here with her family and a determination to minimize
alien influences to their way of life. Until the unbelievers out there
changed their minds, their society and Maryton's could not peacefully
coexist. New converts were always welcome, of course, but interlopers
were discouraged. Ralphie knew all this; indeed, his family was among
the founding mothers of Maryton. Maryton's way of life was his way of
life, and only the appearance of a stranger reminded him of the rest of the
world out there.
The day started out ordinarily enough. He had risen before dawn, to give
himself plenty of time to get ready. He took a quick shower, donned bra,
panties, and a robe, then sat down at the vanity. He expertly applied
makeup and fixed his shoulder-length auburn hair, making a mental note
to get a hair appointment when he spotted a few gray roots. He pulled on
a sheer pair of nylons and slip before putting on a plain baby blue
shirtwaist housedress and slipping into a pair of matching pumps.
Selecting a suitable frilly apron, he descended the stairs to the kitchen.
Ralphie prided himself as a model househusband; breakfast was almost
ready by the time Andrea came groggily down the stairs. She was a
handsome woman; her graying crew-cut hair gave her a look of
distinction, and her blue suit was immaculate, right down to the polished
black wing tips. She kissed him on the cheek and patted his behind
before sitting down at the table. He called upstairs for the boys to come to
breakfast.
The Richmond's two sons were Ralphie's pride and joy. And although
Andrea had been disappointed that they had not had a daughter, he knew
that the boys were the apples of her eye. Danny, the youngest, bounded
down the stairs first. He was six, and so wore the elementary boy's
uniform consisting of a white blouse, navy jumper, white tights, and
black patent leather Mary Janes. As usual, he clutched his Bobby doll,
this morning dressed in a cheerleader's outfit. Andrea thought he was a
little old to be still carrying dolls, but Ralphie thought it was cute. The
doll was always left behind when Danny went to school, so he didn't see
the harm in it.
The oldest, Richie, soon followed his brother down the stairs. He was a
pretty lad of sixteen, a little headstrong as all teenagers are, but all in all a
good boy. He wore the high school uniform, which was a starched white
blouse, pleated blue skirt, sheer tan pantyhose, and pumps with one-inch
heels. He had just reached the age when he was allowed to wear makeup,
and Ralphie always checked carefully to make sure he didn't overdo it.
Although he thought Richie's lipstick was a bit too bold, he approved
overall. He noticed that Richie was wearing the earrings that his girlfriend
had gotten him for his birthday, along with her class ring. Ruth was a
fine girl, but Ralphie was a bit concerned that things might be moving too
fast. He wanted Richie to find a woman to take care of him, but not until
he was at least out of school.
Although Andrea was a little distracted by the morning paper, breakfast
conversation was pleasant enough. Then, with kisses all around, the boys
were sent to school. Andrea soon followed them out the door, after
grabbing her briefcase and giving Ralphie a quick kiss and a slap on the
bottom. Ralphie sighed, then busied himself with the day's housework.
After lunch he decided to go shopping for a while. He put on a nice pink
floral dress and matching shoes, white gloves, and a pretty hat, and
touched up his makeup. As he looked in the mirror, he was pleased
overall. He prided himself on his youthful figure, and thought he was still
pretty enough to keep Andrea's interest after all these years. He
remembered when they first met. Ralphie was a blossoming boy of
seventeen. He had been squaredancing at a youth function, and had
decided to stop by the malt shop on the way home. He still had on his
squaredancing outfit, which consisted of a blue checked dress with full
petticoat and white Mary Jane-style flats. As he sipped on his soda, he
noticed a handsome girl wearing a cardigan sweater checking out his
nylonned legs. He giggled, and she looked down, red-faced. Despite
that, he soon enticed her to come over and sit down. Her name was
Andrea Lawrence, and it was love at first sight. Now, here he was-Mrs.
Ralphie Lawrence, father of her two beautiful sons. He hoped his boys
would find a strong, capable woman to take care of him the way Andrea
did. A man needed pampering, and she knew just what to do to make him
happy.
After driving around town for a bit, Ralphie decided to peruse the shops at
the mall. The place looked a lot emptier without all the tough-acting
teenage girls and the giggling groups of teenage boys, and the clicking of
his heels seemed loud in his ears. He went into one of the mens'
boutiques, but most of the dresses seemed made for skinny boys, not men
with real-life proportions. Evidently most everyone else thought so, too;
the shop was deserted except for him and the bored-looking young clerk.
Ralphie looked at the clerk askance; he wore too much makeup, and he
had a large run in his pantyhose. He half-heartedly persuaded Ralphie to
try on one mini-dress which fell well above his knees, but Ralphie thought
it made him look slutty. He did find a pair of cute ankle-strap dress
sandals, which he liked enough to buy.
After strolling around for awhile, Ralphie decided to go to Nailz for a
manicure. As he walked in, he was glad to see that Howie Hanson was
working today. Howie was a Newcomer; he was not born in Maryton,
but had come here right after graduating high school, having heard rumors
about a town which was everything he had dreamed of his whole life. He
had been an outcast on the Outside, but here fitted in like he was a native.
Ralphie was on the welcoming committee when the Council voted to
receive Howie as a citizen of the town. He remembered that Howie was
not exactly polished at the time. His hair was quite short and not styled,
his hair was a mess, his makeup was crude, and his dress didn't fit well.
His mannerisms were quite feminine, as well, with his stiff wrists and
awkward gait. But he had a great earnestness about him, and Ralphie
knew that he would assimilate.
And so he had. Howie stood before him a confident and sexy young
man. His hair and makeup were immaculate, he was very well-dressed in
an expensive suit and sheer hose, and was just as limp-wristed and fluid
as any native Maryton man as he flitted around the room. His red-rimmed
mouth lit up with a smile as he saw Ralphie come in.
"Hi, Mrs. Lawrence, so nice to see you," he said, reaching out to touch
Ralphie's arm. "Please, have a seat. You're looking as lovely as ever."
"Thanks, Howie. You're looking very pretty, yourself. Those shoes are
darling, by the way." Ralphie settled into a chair, and Howie went to
work on his nails. "Is that what I think it is?" he asked, pointing at
Howie's left hand.
"It sure is!" Howie exclaimed, glowing. "Myra asked me last week. It
was so romantic--she got down on one knee and everything," he giggled.
"Oh, it's so wonderful. I can hardly believe it! Mrs. Howie Banks! I've
already started practicing writing my new name. There are so many things
to do! I have to find a dress, and the bridesmaids' dresses-Jeffie's going
to be my Maid of Honor-there's so much to plan, but I love it!" he gushed
happily.
Ralphie smiled as Howie did his nails and chattered on. It was most
important day in a man's life, after all. Ralphie could remember being the
flower boy for his uncle's wedding, and how he loved his miniature
bride's outfit. He was only eight, and it was the first time his father let
him wear pantyhose and shoes with heels. He felt so grown-up! He
remembered dreaming of the day when he would be the bride, and all eyes
would be on him. And it turned out to be just as wonderful as he had
hoped. Terry, Markie, and Jimmy were his bridesmaids, and they wore
beautiful lavender dresses. Andrea was so handsome, and when she lifted
his veil and kissed him, the world stopped for a few moments. He didn't
begrudge Howie his happiness at all; in fact, he thought that every boy
should have a chance to be a bride.
In due time, Ralphie's nails were finished--a pretty French manicure. He
had always been careful to take good care of them, and usually did his
own, but a boy needed to be pampered every once in a while. He said
goodbye to Howie and headed out the door. It would soon be time for the
boys to come home from school, and he needed to be there.
As he exited the mall, he immediately saw the Outsider. It always made
him a little nauseous to see one. They just didn't fit. It was a woman, he
noticed, although she would have been mistaken for a man at a distance.
She had on makeup, a dress, even hose and heels! What a pity, thought
Ralphie. She could be a very handsome woman. He shuddered
inwardly. He tried to ignore her and go on about his business, but she
accosted him.
"Oh my god! It's really true!" she exclaimed. "Ron told me, but I never
would have believed it! I don't understand. What would make a man do
this? Aren't you uncomfortable wearing a dress?"
"I might ask the same of you." Ralphie rolled his eyes. These Outsiders
were all the same. "And yes, it's true, before you even ask--women run
the town. It's only natural; after all, women are the superior sex. A man
should be obedient to his wife's wishes. Maybe one day you Outsiders
will come to your senses. For the sake of womankind."
"I'm sorry," she said. "I didn't mean to offend you. It's so strange to
me, you must understand that. You don't look bad dressed that way;
you're very pretty, in fact."
"I thank you madam. Now good day," Ralphie said sharply, then turned
on his heel and walked away, glad that the encounter was over.
He couldn't help running through the whole thing in his mind on the way
home. The female Outsider was obviously very disturbed, but no less
than he was. She was so masculine and weak, it made him uncomfortable
to even think about her. At least it wasn't a male Outsider, he thought.
They're even more repulsive. Crude animals, that's all they were. He
shook his head and, pulling into the driveway, made an effort to forget the
whole thing and concentrate on his tasks for the evening.
Ralphie was in a reflective mood as he put away the dishes after supper.
"What's wrong, Dad," asked Richie, looking at him concernedly.
"Oh, nothing, honey, nothing." Ralphie stood back and took a look at his
son. He wore a simple rose-colored housedress, pantyhose, and white
pumps. His fingernails, now getting long, were painted to match the
dress. His hair was up, revealing his slender, graceful, neck. His eyes
were very pretty, emphasized by the eyeliner, muted eyeshadow, and
mascara he had very expertly applied. His rose-colored lips were pursed
thoughtfully. Proudly, Ralphie said, "You know, Richie, you're growing
up to be a beautiful young man."
Richie grinned and hugged him tightly. "I guess I take it back after my
father!"
Just then Danny walked in, wearing his black leotard, pink tights, and
pink ballet shoes; Andrea followed behind him.. "And there's my other
pretty little boy," said Ralphie. "I almost forgot about ballet practice. You
and your mother be careful, pumpkin." He kissed Danny on the cheek,
then wiped away the lipstick imprint.
"We will," said Andrea, as she took Ralphie into her arms and gave him a
long, lingering kiss. No doubt about it, he thought. I am a lucky man.
And thank God I was born in Maryton.
