talking with Beth Johnston, director of the new independent film,
Weatherbabes
--Beth, we are here to talk about your new film, Weatherbabes. Can you tell
me a bit about it?
It's a film about a band that decides to get a gimmick and starts dressing up
like women on the Weather Channel. They get into a whole underground
weatherbabe cult, full of men who fantasize about the women on TV. I made
the film because I was interested in the subject of fame, or getting close to
fame -- how do we lose ourselves by trying to be like the people we see on
TV?
-- It's filmed in an interesting style.
Yes. In film school I worked a lot as a documentarian, so this is in
documentary style, but with a strong outline. It's different, though, than
Spinal Tap or Blair Witch or other mocumentaries because we didn't start
with a script and a shooting schedule. We filmed this over time, like a real
documentary would be filmed. I like the results because the actors really go
though changes that appear on film.
--All your characters are interesting, but DeeDee stands out.
Yes. DeeDee was a hard role to cast, but because the changes are so
profound over time, people really seem to notice.
-- Tell us a little about DeeDee as a character
Don is the only male member of the band when they decide to dress up as
WeatherBabes for the first time. As the success increases, Don is eventually
living full time as a woman, and though the film experiences an awakening of
sexuality, as Josie deals with drugs, Sue deals with the failure of a marriage
and Judy deals with money issues..
--The transformation is remarkable. How did you find Alan?
I knew Alan, and all the actors, from my time in Austin. Alan was a rail thin
dancer, and the only person I thought could handle the role. The changes
were remarkable. He did start living as a woman, going to work as a web
designer everyday as Deedee. I think the most remarkable thing was the
plastic surgery.
--How did that come about?
Well, one of the people who helped fund this project was Dr. Bernie
Neumann, a plastic surgeon in the Dallas area. In fact, his wife Eve was a
co-producer, and we spent a lot of time at their house with the girls
rehearsing and getting to know each other. I knew I wanted to deal with
sexuality, and while Gretchen Wyler did a fabulous job with the costumes,
using the base of clothing donated to the thift store of the Albay Theatre --
lots of great weather babes looks -- she could only go so far with the
attachable breast forms Deedee used.
Bernie, who had his staff to the laser hair removal for Deedee (a full
Brazilian) offered to do implants and later remove them. I suppose it was
kind of an infomercial for him. He looked at DeeDee and wanted to do two
other procedures, a nose job and an eyebrow tuck, and he was very
persuasive, saying she would look much better.
The results were amazing, as you see in the film. Deedee really came alive at
that point, and her subsequent blossoming sexuality, to where she ends the
movie as an erotic sex star living in a threesome becomes very real.
--How did Alan handle that?
As a trained dancer, which we put to use in filming the videos, and also the
sequence where Deedee dances in the strip club, Alan was comfortable with
his body. I suspect he identifies as bisexual.
--When did DeeDee become real to you?
I think it was the first time I came to lunch with her. I met her at work and
we went downstairs into the mall. She had just started living full time, and
as I we walked, I noticed that men's head were turning, even though she
was very shy -- much shyer than she was after the surgery. I knew she had
star potential.
--The final scenes with DeeDee are very sexual. Was that a problem?
No. They are clips from her porn films, so we just shot them that way. By
this time, DeeDee had spent a lot of time in role, so she knew what was sexy
and gave some great ideas -- that scene with the threesome where DeeDee is
in the middle is her idea.
--How did the other actresses deal with DeeDee?
Their relationship pretty well mirrored the film. There was first
some distance, then a big sister kind of thing, and finally some resentment as
she turned out to be a babe competing with them for men. Once DeeDee got
her boobies it was hard to keep her out of a miracle bra. She didn't have the
inhibitions we women are taught about our sexuality -- what's the old line "I
thought I was a slut and then I realized I was just acting like a man?" She
flirted with everyone by the end.
-- The clothes are amazing in the film. DeeDee and those heels!!
Aren't they? The resource of the rich women of Dallas who donated outfits
was great. It allowed us to start with the gals looking very weather like and
then sex up the outfits, to show the fans what they like, sort of like the fake
nudie pictures of Katie Couric and others that are so popular on the internet.
Because Deedee was trained as a dancer, with those long legs, the heels came
naturally to her, so she loved them
-- Is the network of groupies real?
Yes. That was a real conference the gals played at in the hotel, all those guys
trading photos and chat. The audience was very excited -- I wished later we
had some bouncers, which I add towards the end of the film. The gent who
propositions DeeDee with the big bucks -- our own indecent proposal -- is an
actor though, so we could get the scene in his room as he uses Deedee like a
kind of blowup doll.
--Has DeeDee gone back to being Alan?
Not yet. With the surgery, she looks great and the stars are in her eyes still.
I know she is pursuing other parts. Maybe she really has lost herself in the
fame of being like other people -- I don't know.
-- You are using internet promotion for this film.
Yes. We have fan sites up devoted to our Weatherbabes that are very much
like the fan sites devoted to the real weatherbabes. We even used some
videocaptures to make them look authentic, but we also have stills and the
videos in streaming media. I enjoyed making the videos, with the costumes
and transformations and such -- a chane to mirror what was going on in the
film.
