Last year, I completed 32 successful mind transfers. Almost everyone
that approached me had a clear, compelling case; the decisions were
pretty cut-and-dried. But the one presented to me today had me honestly
stumped.
A married couple, both in their mid-thirties, came to see me. We went
through the usual "dance" about the purpose of their visit. When you're
doing illegal mind transfers, you can't be open about it; it's a
business conducted on the sly, by word-of-mouth...much like it must
have been for abortion doctors through the first half of the 20th
century.
The government doesn't like doctors who violate the laws, and for some
reason, this law in particular. There are said to be undercover agents
working to root us out on a regular basis. So I have to tread carefully
with anyone who approaches me.
I looked across the table and saw two pleasant looking, seemingly
unremarkable people. The man, Dan Parker, was just under six feet tall;
he had reddish-brown hair, a slightly ruddy complexion and a medium
build. He wore a closely-trimmed beard and mustache. His wife, Sandra,
was about five-feet five, just a little on the plump side, with
straight, shoulder length blonde hair, a round, friendly face, and a
fairly ample bosom. Both were well-groomed and conservatively dressed.
"We heard you could help us, doctor," Sandra began.
"I like to help people," I said as cryptically as I could. "But I need
to know what you want."
They both looked at each other; then at me; then Sandra spoke again.
"We've been told that you do brain transfers."
I tried to be as deadpan as possible. "You have? Where did you hear
that?"
Now Dan spoke for the first time. After hesitantly clearing his throat,
he stammered..."They....they swore us to secrecy."
I began to sense that they were genuine, but still wanted to know them
better. "So why do you want this? You appear to be two happily married,
well adjusted people to me. You indicated you even have two children.
Why would you possibly want to swap bodies?"
They both told me that they had identified with the opposite sex at an
early age. That they had felt "trapped" in the wrong bodies. That they
had not dated all through their school years, until their final
semester of high school, when Sandra had transferred to Dan's school.
He had felt sorry for a new girl having to start over so close to
graduation, and had tried to befriend her.
He had shown her around the school; eaten lunch with her when no one
else seemed interested in a newcomer; helped her with her studies.
Soon, a friendship developed, and that had ripened into love. They were
married a week after graduation and had been together ever since.
"But this is what doesn't make sense to me!" I said. "It's the classic
story; boy meets girl; boy and girl fall in love, get married, and
live happily ever after! So what's the problem? You still love each
other right?"
They nodded affirmatively, even vigorously.
"Then pardon me for being dense, but I still don't see why you're not
happy. Is the reason you want to do this is to add some spice to your
lives? It's not the kind of thing you do on a whim...spend a few months
as your partner, then swap back."
They seemed exasperated; I think Brenda even started to stand up to
leave, but Dan stopped her. "We should tell her the rest," he almost
whispered.
Brenda shook her head "no." Now they had a quick whispered exchange.
Finally, Brenda spoke. "Dan wants to tell you this, in hopes that you
will be convinced. My assumption is that you will just think us crazy."
I tried to look sympathetic. "I've heard just about everything in my
line of work. Please go ahead."
"Okay," she said. "What would you say if I told you we were both married
before in a previous life....only we were each the opposite
gender....and we can prove it."
It took a long moment for this to sink in. "Okay, now I've heard it all.
I guess I'd say...I'd like to see that proof. And if it convinces me,
I'll help you."
Somehow, I doubt if I will ever see them again. But who knows? I've run
into more interesting cases since I got into this sideline....
January 30, 2071
The Parkers were back to see me tonight.
They had a holo-file filled with documentary evidence that was simply
incredible.....I looked at still and moving pictures, birth
certificates, school reports.....It was the entire story of John Cardle
(1947-2012) and his wife, Lois McKenzie (1951-2015). John was the
spitting image of Dan, and Lois was a twin of Brenda. I have to admit
that I was amazed.
Turning off the viewer, I looked over to them and said, "A very
interesting coincidence, and an impressive body of research." I paused.
"But where's the payoff?"
Dan said, "We've given you all the hard evidence...you just have to take
the rest of this on faith."
From the honest, sincere expression on his face, I really sensed that
what I was about to hear was true. "We had been married a little over a
year. We were happy, but both sensed something was missing from our
lives. We were out for a Sunday afternoon drive, and something.......I
don't know, almost compelled me to drive to this cemetery on the edge of
town."
Brenda picked up the tale. "We both found ourselves drawn to a simple
twin headstone. It was John and Lois' final resting place. We both
agreed that we felt like we were in the presence of something strange
and powerful."
Dan said, "So we checked at the cemetery office, got all the information
on them we could, and started our research. We were fascinated, but
like you, looking for the missing piece. Not knowing where else to
turn, we visited a fortune teller. Actually.....several. Most of them
we could quickly dismiss as phonies. But finally, we found Madame
LeSur.
"As soon as we walked in, before we could speak, she said, "This is not
your first lifetime together.' Well, of course that got our attention.
Pretty soon, we learned that she understood exactly what we were
looking for."
Now they paused dramatically. "Please go on...this is getting good," I
said with a slight grin.
"That's when she told us," Dan said, "That the reason we were unhappy in
this life, despite having found each other again, is that we were the
opposite gender in the previous life."
Brenda continued. "It was like we were both hit by thunderbolts at that
instant. Suddenly, I could remember everything about John's life; and
Dan recalled every detail of Lois'." They went on to recount in detail
two average lives in the second half of the 20th century; it seemed
like this was true memory, as opposed to mere research!
Finally, I said, "Okay, you two, I'm convinced. Destiny brought you
together a second time...it just screwed up and put you in the wrong
bodies. I'm glad to be able to fix things for you."
February 7, 2072
I completed the Parker transfer tonight.
I've seen it happen dozens of times now, but it's still amazing to
watch. Attach a few simple leads to each person, a little
current.....and voila! Same mind, new body.
Dan, now in Brenda's body, was first to awaken. She blinked her new eyes
several times, then opened them and slowly sat up. First, her hands
went to her new, soft, round face, and seemed to explore every square
inch of it. She began to smile. Then she ran her hands through her long
hair....then quickly grabbed her breasts. At that point, as she gave
them a squeeze, she began to laugh with delight.
"Oh yes, oh yes, this is so right, this is what I was missing." She
looked at me and said, "I don't know how to thank you, doctor." Then
she looked over at the still-comatose male body she had just vacated.
"Is he okay, doctor?" she asked with real concern in her voice.
"Yes, yes, everything's fine. All his vitals are completely normal. It's
not unusual for some people to take a little longer to come out of
this--" And at that very moment Dan began to stir.
In contrast to Brenda's giddy reaction, Dan's was strangely subdued.
Perhaps he thought he had to play the part of the dispassionate male?
He gave his new body an almost clinical inspection, nodded to himself,
then to his former self with just a faint hint of a smile....then stood
up, walked over to her and gave her a kiss. It was a strange kiss,
almost more like brother and sister than a couple. They both thanked
me, paid their fee and left.
As much as I hope I did the right thing in this case, I can't shake the
feeling that I haven't.
September 11, 2072
Dan Parker came to see me tonight. He and Brenda split up a couple of
months after the transfer. It turns out while she gloried in being a
woman again, he missed it far more than he had anticipated.
"Yes, when I was a child, I was unhappy being a girl. But I finally came
to realize that in recent years, I had become comfortable with
it...comfortable with who I am, or was. You know what hurts the most?
Seeing my children, the issue of my body, calling her 'mommy.'" At that
point, Dan began to sob, and I started to cry too.
Finally, I asked, "Is there any chance she would consider switching
back?"
"None," he said.
"Then what can I do for you?"
"Put me on the waiting list for a female body, please doctor. There must
be some woman out there who would be happy with this body. I have to
become a mother again. Please."
I agreed to do so, but told him I could make no promises, and didn't
want him to develop any false hopes, as the demand for healthy female
bodies of childbearing age far outstripped the supply.
He left my office thanking me, telling me he didn't blame me for what
had happened. I told him I appreciated that and wished him good luck.
But this was still a powerful reminder that sometimes you don't help
people by giving them what they ask for.
