CHAPTER ONE:
Part of the fun of basketball practice was that no one could really
anticipate the scrimmages. Coach Noyance would simply shout,
"Scrimmage!" at a random point of practice and we were expected to drop
anything we were doing, organize, and start a game (easier said than done).
I saw the clearing between Josh and Andy. A clear lane to the basket.
Thonk. Thonk. Thonk. I dribbled with my right hand and held out my
left, ready to ward off Josh if he came after me.
"Gimme the ball!" a guy on my team yelled. Josh and Andy were closing
in. I passed the rock and powered to the basket.
"Pass it back!" I shouted at him. But Andy was all over him.
"You rot," he taunted. "You could throw at the ground and miss. You'll
never make it."
"Pass it!" I made one futile effort to get it back. Too late. The other guy
had already begun an impossible one-handed, off-balance, fadeaway jumper.
"Airball!" Josh yelled. The ball missed the rim. He caught it and put in an
easy layup. The coach whistled, a signal to hit the showers. Josh and Andy's
team celebrated as they walked to The Dump, which is the nickname for the
boy's locker room. It probably hasn't been cleaned for years now.
I showered and left. I was tired and thirsty. And I had to make an
UPHILL walk home because my car was being worked on. Whew!
I decided to go downtown to Moe's, a local pizza chain, and get
something to drink. It was downhill, as well, and that helped some. But I
noticed something along the way.
It was a new store. Check that. A new BUILDING. I had never seen it
before, and I've lived here my whole life. The wooden sign above the
wooden door read, "Mr. Hermes Shop of Magic!". I decided to go in. It
might have a water fountain, and it was closer to home than Moe's.
The shop was in perfect condition. It was organized, and there wasn't a
speck of dust anywhere (except behind the counter). The counter belied the
rest of the store. It had lots of garbage and papers. The clerk behind the
counter was a nondescript sort of guy, and he was eating a slice of pizza and
reading a thick, leather bound book. The bookcase behind him, I noticed,
was the only thing behind the counter that was even remotely organized.
"I know, you're there, Micheal," he said without even looking up. "The
freezer's over there." He pointed.
"How do you know my name?"
"That's irrelevant, but if you must know, I'm a sorceror. Some call me
the Dark One. Others call me Another Way to Spell Evil. You-" he pointed at
me- "will call me Mr. Hermes."
I backed away and went to the freezer. It looked similar to the kind you
might find at a 7-Eleven. It had several soft drinks and juices that I didn't
recognize. There were some multicolored liquids without a label. One of the
bottles caught my eye. I picked it up and examined it. The label read "Sugar
and Spice."
