The alarm had gone off at 3am. An ungodly hour, but it was worth rising
that early to get an interview with Donna Fallows.
She had called me the night before on my cell phone. "I'll give you an
exclusive, but you are to tell no one, this is just you and me, you must
be here by 5.30am or the interview is off." I had laughed, there was no
hope of me, Jack Smart letting any of my hack pals know that I was going
to see her. "You are to drive onto my estate and park your car in the
barn behind the house, then come to the back door."
I agreed with what she said and hung up. I sat there, slightly puzzled by
her call. She and I were not the best of friends, she wasn't friendly
with any of the press. I had written some pretty nasty things about her
in the past and she must have got wind of my latest story that would blow
the top off her world. She had embezzeled millions from her company, and
I had the proof.
I set off at 3.30am, driving the 100 or so miles to her estate. I felt
really smug, the evidence that I had was in a safety deposit box, I
wasn't going to risk anyone getting their hands on it. I had gone quiet
in my column on Donna Fallows for the past six months and everyone
thought that my campaign against her was over. No chance. It was my
exclusive and was going to re-inforce my position as the greatest crime
reporter in Fleet Street. I wondered what her exclusive was going to be.
Maybe she was going to try and bribe me to stop me ruining her. No
chance. She was a nasty person that used charitable events to cover her
real intentions. It had never been proved, but people were supposed to
have disappeared after causing her problems.
Her lover, Danielle, used to be the girlfriend of a guy called Julian
Purvis. He was a rough, tough rugby playing man who just seemed to vanish
when Danielle became involved with Donna. That would have been about a
year ago. I had investigated his disappearance but found no trace, and
other than Danielle, no link to Donna.
It was 5.20am as I drove onto the estate. As she had specified, I
followed the road around and found the barn at the back of the large
house. The estate must have been hundreds of acres big, and the nearest
neighbours were miles away. I parked the car in the barn and made my way
to the back of the house. As I approached the back door it opened and
Donna greeted me. "So you just made it in time."
I looked at my watch, 5.29am. I smiled at her and said, "I will always be
on time for an exclusive." She returned my smile and invited me into the
large spacious kitchen. I sat at the table as she made coffee.
As she did that she said, "I will have to keep you waiting for a while,
something's come up in Australia and I need to make some phone calls."
I shrugged my shoulders and accepted a steaming mug of coffee from her. I
smiled and said, "I have always got plenty of time for you Ms. Fallows."
She smiled back, but had recognised my sarcasm. She told me to help
myself to more coffee if I wanted it and left me with a copy of her
latest book.
She left the room and I browsed through the pages, it was the normal
feminist garbage that she wrote.
Time passed slowly and it wasn't until 7.30am that she returned,
apologising as she walked through the door. She saw that I had finished
the pot of coffee and insisted on making more. She poured me another cup,
maybe she was trying to give me caffine poisoning I thought chuckling to
myself. She sat down, no coffee for her she said, only water, she was
going through a body detox. I pulled out my notebook, ready to take
notes. She was talking small talk, not getting the point. I was now
getting restless and wanted her to get to the subject of the interview.
It was now 8.00am, the kitchen door opened and in walked Danielle with a
small girl.
Donna introduced me to them, even though she knew I knew who Danielle was
and didn't really care who the kid was.
"This is Danielle and my niece Julia." Danielle smiled, the child
blushed. She was told to sit at the end of the table and Danielle made
her breakfast. Donna whispered to me that we would start the interview
when Danielle was taking Julia to school. I nodded and made a mental note
to investigate her so called niece. I knew that she had no brothers or
sisters, how could she have a niece?
We continued talking about nothing in particular, but I started to feel
rather strange, maybe I had drunk to much coffee. Danielle got Julia's
coat and the pair of them left the kitchen. I heard the front door close,
they were gone, now for the interview.
Donna was smiling at me and said, "Are you ready to start?" I nodded, but
could feel that I appeared to have no power in my body.
"Stand up Mr Smart," I heard her say. I stood. Her smile widened even
further. "The drug in the coffee has worked well."
She stood up and told me to follow her. Like a zombie I traced her
footsteps into the hallway. She opened a door that led to the cellar. I
followed her down the steps silently. It was a large area, well
illuminated with several doors off a wide corridor. She opened one of the
doors and indicated for me to enter. I did and she followed me in. The
room was carpeted and the walls were painted a oatmeal colour. I the
centre of the room was a padded bench and the far wall was covered in
equipment that made it look like a laboratory.
"Now Mr Smart, and that is the last time that you will be addressed as
that for reasons that will become obvious later, remove your clothes."
Slowly, feeling as if I was drunk I stripped off my clothing letting each
piece drop to the floor.
"Get on the bench," her voice, sounding distant said to me. I laid down
on the bench, feeling both relaxed and concerned.
An inner voice was saying run, my body was saying close your eyes. The
first option was removed as she strapped me to the bench, not tightly but
sufficiently to stop me from getting away. My wrists by my sides, my
ankles together and more straps that ran over my knees, waist, chest and
finally my neck. I lay passively as she slipped on latex gloves and then
inserted skillfully a needle in both my arms. The needles were connected
to plastic tubes that ran to bags held on a stand. She adjusted the drip
on the bags. Several stick on pads were attached to my head and chest.
Wires from them went to some electronic equipment by the wall.
My eyes were shutting but I heard her say, "In two months things will be
different, you will be different and my problem will have gone away and
no one will be harmed. I really am a gentle person you know."
My mind was panicking, but sleep came easy, only disturbed at times by
dreams of waking, walking around the confines of the room and feeling
different. It was as if my whole being was changing, metamorphosing into
something different. It was, and when I was awoken Jack Smart was no
more.
"Come on sleepy head, get up and get your nightdress off and get in the
bath." I sat up and swung my legs out of the bed. It must be my mother,
but I wear pyjamas not a nightdress. I was led to the bathroom and the
nightdress was pulled off me and I was told to sit in the bath. "Don't
forget to wash under your arms and all your bits," the voice said. I
started to wash, sponging all over. As I reached between my legs...I was
a girl not a boy! I looked...no mistaking...I was a little girl...my mind
started to clear...I was Jack Smart, aged 33 and top crime reporter...

Danielle's face came into view. I looked up at her and she could see the
realisation on my face.
"Come on girly, hurry up, your sister is waiting for you downstairs." She
lifted me from the water and dried my body. I was less than half her
size. She towel dried my hair, and led me back into the bedroom were she
used a dryer to finish it off as she brushed my long blond hair.
My confusion was enhanced as she dressed me in panties, a vest, knee
length white socks and a frilly pink dress and put a pair of pink buckle
up shoes on my feet. "Oh, you are a pretty girl, your aunt will be really
pleased with the results."
She led me from the room and down the stairs and into a large living
room. Donna was seated in a chair by the fireplace, Julia sat on the
settee. Donna's eyes widened and she smiled as she saw me.
"Go and sit with your sister," she said to me pointing to the settee. I
walked slowly and climbed onto the large leather piece of furniture and
sat beside the girl that I had seen for the first time on the day that I
had arrived here.
Donna coughed as if to clear her throat and then spoke, "You are now
Lucinda, nice name don't you think, and you are a nine year old girl.
Julia is ten and you are pretty little sisters." I listened to her
wondering what was really going on, bemused by the situation that I found
myself in.
"In case you think that there is anything that you can do about this,
take advice from Julia, she used to be Julian and has been a little girl
for over a year." I looked at Julia and could not picture the hunk of a
man that terrorised the scrum when he played for his team. I saw tears in
her eyes.
"Your body is not all that had been changed. It is important for you to
know that you are a man in a girls body, but you could not be allowed to
keep your mental capacity. You have been programmed to have the mind and
brain of a nine year old girl and that is how you will stay." She looked
at me sternly and then said, "Nobody gives me the trouble you have and
gets away with it, now you are a child and even if you ran away, no one
would believe you."
From beside her she picked up a file. It was the file that I had on her
with the incriminating evidence. She smiled as she threw it on the fire.
"Now that Lucinda knows the rules shall we take her and Julia out to the
shops for a treat?" Julia knew not to disobey and stood immediately. I
followed her as Danielle took us to the kitchen.
"Take your shoes off girls, it's raining you will need your wellies,
coats and sowesters."
We removed our footwear and replaced it with pink Wellington boots. Pink
plastic knee length coats were next, with the outdoor clothing completed
with a sowester of the same material on our heads held in place with an
elastic strap under our chins.
Julia and I walked to the car following Donna and Danielle. We were
strapped into the seatbelts at the rear of the car and Danielle drove
off. Donna turned to me and said, "Whilst we are out we can get your
school uniform." She saw the look of horror on my face and said, "Come on
Lucinda, all good girls have to go to school."
I sobbed and Julia comforted me.
Next it was Julia's turn to cry. Danielle who had shared a bed with him
for two years prior to her knowing Donna spoke and said, "Julian always
wanted me to wear a Nurses uniform, now we can buy Julia one and she can
wear it herself." Giggles from the front of the car drowned out the sobs
in the rear.
We spent most of the day in the large shopping mall. What Donna said was
correct. I found that some of the long words I could not now read or
understand, and she teased me by trying to make me add up simple sums.
The two of them were delighted in seeing the two little girls walking
around hand in hand.
We returned home and Julia was made to put on the Nurses uniform and
parade around for Danielle. I had to put my new school uniform away in my
wardrobe and then play with the doll that had been bought for me.
I cried on the way to school for the first time, not wanting to go to the
all girl establishment. But I had no choice.
"There are lots of dirty old men that would love to be left alone with
you," was the threat. I sat in the classroom, the new girl, knowing that
I was really a 33 year old male, but mentally struggling to do the simple
work that my new peers found easy. I looked around at them with envy.
They were nine years old, next year they would be ten, Donna had changed
me so that I was going to remain a nine year old girl, Julia was going to
remain ten. We were to remain schoolgirls until she decided otherwise,
and she had made it clear that was going to be a long time.
