The teacher didn't like the first grader's drawing. "The
sky isn't pink," she said.
"Sometimes it is," he explained.
"Well, normally it is blue, that's the way it is usually
colored."
"This sky is pink."
"Don't you have a blue crayon?"
Wordlessly he held up a crayon, one that was clearly
labeled, Sky Blue.
"There," she said. "Next time use that one."
He nodded.

"Not many men would even apply for this job. We usually
hire women as nursery school attendants."

The orderly disapproved of patients lingering on the
hospital patio so long at this time of day. He snorted but
said nothing.
She smiled because she knew what the snort meant. She had
done a lot of things in life that people had made their
disapproval of even plainer.
But she wanted to stand here a while longer. The afternoon
had never had much warmth on a mid-autumn day in the
Colorado Mountains. It got cooler still as the sun fell
toward the night. She shivered a bit and pulled her robe
tighter.
She wanted to watch the sunset. She had waited a long time
to see this particular sunset. Sitting was still painful,
it was easier to stand.
As she watched and the air cooled and she pulled the robe
tighter still, the quiet of the mountain seemed to seep
into the small city just as the shadows of the mountains
deepened and darkened and touched the small group of
hospital buildings.
Quietly, as she watched, slowly, as she waited, the sky
turned from blue to pink.
