Easter Break Part 3 ? by: Lisa Elizabeth
As soon as my Mom and sister disappeared, I stopped waving and turned
back toward Donna Anne and Janet Lynn.
"Let's go see what my Mom is doing in the kitchen," said Donna Anne. "I'm
sure we can get a snack there."
All three of us walked into the kitchen and there was Mrs. Jones taking a
bowl from the cabinet. She looked at us as we entered. "Hi girls! Are you
here to help?" She asked. "I was just going to bake some Toll House
cookies! I have jobs for each of you."
We all answered, "Okay."
First she opened a drawer and pulled out three aprons. "No sense in
getting your pretty dresses all dirty!" She said, as she handed each of
us an apron.
We ended up tying each other's bow, since we all had trouble doing our
own. Then on to the cookie making! Mrs. Jones gave each of us a job to
do. Donna Anne helped mix the batter, Janet gathered ingredients and I
found the cookie sheets and turned on the oven. It was fun working
together and it really smelled great when the cookies were baking.
"We need to let them cool for a while. Why don't we order a pizza for
dinner? By the time it arrives and we eat, the cookies will be ready."
Donna's Mom suggested.
"Pizza!" I think we all said it together!
"You owe me a coke!" I said to Donna Anne.
"Why?" She asked, a puzzled look on her face.
"Because we said the same thing at the same time!" explained Janet Lynn.
"Lisa was just faster than me at realizing it! Otherwise you would owe ME
the coke!" Janet Lynn giggled.
"Oh-h-h-h. I still don't understand?" Replied a perplexed Donna Anne.
"We'll explain it later. Let's go back to your room Donna, I thought I
saw some new dolls up there." stated Janet Lynn.
This sounded like a good idea to Donna as her confused look disappeared
and she took the lead to show off her new dolls.
"This is a 'Collector Barbie' called Magic Princess. My Grandparents gave
it to me for my birthday. This is my favorite! It's 'Felicity' from the
'American Girls Collection'. Mom and Dad bought it for my birthday. She
comes with her own storybook. They said if I was good, I could get the
matching clothes for Christmas. That way I could dress just like
Felicity!" Donna was very excited showing us her new dolls.
We decided to all take a doll and read Felicity's story. I don't remember
all of it, I just remember that it was a very exciting adventure and that
I hoped everything turned out all right. Of course, everything did and in
the end, Felicity and her friends were safe and happy! (I don't know if
they 'lived happily ever after'.)
"Donna! Janet! Lisa! Pizza is here!" called Mrs. Jones.
We all hopped up and put the dolls away. Donna was very careful with both
of her new dolls. Then we went downstairs to have pizza and Kool-Aid.
"Girls! Go to the sink and wash your hands first." Donna's Mom pointed at
the sink.
We each washed and dried our hands then sat at the table. I was as
careful as I could remember! I swept my dress under me when I sat, then
carefully placed the napkin in my lap. I let Donna take the first piece;
after all, it was her party.
We talked about school, movies and upcoming summer vacation. Mrs. Jones
asked where we were going on vacation, I told her I did not know yet. Mom
and Dad always kept that a secret until school was out.
We finished our pizza and cleaned off the table. I went into the bathroom
to check myself in the mirror, another meal eaten, and no pizza sauce on
my clothes! One thing for certain, I definitely tried harder to stay
clean dressed as Lisa.
The rest of the evening we watched videos and ate popcorn. It was kind of
neat, the three of us giggling and making comments about the characters
in the movies. I would imagine it looked like three girlfriends enjoying
an evening together.
About ten O'clock, Mrs. Jones suggested we change into our nightgowns and
slippers. The movie had ended so we all went up to Donna's room to get
our clothes. Janet went into the bathroom, Donna showed me into a
guestroom to change and she went to change in her bedroom.
I opened my case and took out the plastic bag Mom put in there for dirty
clothes. I took off my sailor dress and hung it up on a hangar, then
removed my other clothes and put them in the plastic bag. I took out my
'Strawberry Shortcake' nightgown and panties and put them on, then slid
on my slippers. Mom had suggested that I re-brush my hair whenever I
changed clothes, 'just in case you mess it up', was her reason. So I
looked in the mirror and she was right! I ended up re-brushing my hair
and reinserting the headband. I closed my case and picked up my new teddy
bear. When I walked out of the bedroom Janet was waiting in the hall.
"Donna Anne has always been a slowpoke when it comes to changing
clothes!" Janet said.
"That's all right, I'm kind of excited to be here, so I probably changed
a little faster than normal," I replied.
Janet was in a 'Care Bears' nightgown with pink 'Bunny' slippers. She was
carrying a 'Care Bear'.
We both heard Donna's door open and she came out to join us. She was in a
simple white nightgown and carried a Raggedy Ann doll with her.
"Let's put the cases back in my room and then we can go back downstairs,"
said Donna. We entered Donna's room. We were putting things back in her
closet, when her Mom walked in.
"I know you girls are not going to sleep anytime soon, so I brought some
things in for you to do tonight! 'She said. In her arms were a basket
full of curlers, creams, bottles and other beauty items. She proceeded to
dump them on Donna's bed. "We used to give each other 'Spa' treatments
when I was a young girl. So I thought the three of you might enjoy that
too," Mrs. Jones said with a smile.
"Mom?" Donna asked. "I've never used some of this stuff before, can you
show us how it's used?"
"Are you sure? You could just read the labels, then I wouldn't be here,"
Mrs. Jones replied.
"How about you start on Lisa! Then Janet and I could just follow along!"
Donna said.
I am sure I looked surprised. I mean I had only met Donna once and here
she was 'volunteering' me for something I had no idea about. I just sort
of looked back and forth between Donna and her Mom.
"I'll do it!" Janet Lynn said. "I just love facials!"
"Okay! We have a victim! Lisa and Donna, gather around so you can see how
I do this," Mrs. Jones said. She proceeded to undo a tube and squeeze
some stuff onto her hand. Then she applied it to Janet's face, being
careful not to get it into her eyes or mouth. She even spread some onto
her neck! "There! What do you think?" she asked.
Donna and I had to cover our mouths to keep from laughing! Janet looked
like a creature from a horror movie! Only in pink! All you could see were
her eyes and mouth! It took us a couple of minutes to gain control back
so we wouldn't laugh every time we looked at Janet.
"What's so funny?" Janet asked.
"You!" Donna and I said at the same time.
"You look like a creature from one of those 'old' movies they show late
at night!" I said.
"Alright girls, now it's your turn!" Mrs. Jones said.
"Well...if Janet can do this...so can I!" said Donna.
"Me too!" I chimed in.
Mrs. Jones asked Janet to do Donna's face and she did mine. In a few
minutes, all three of us looked like creatures from a bad 'B' movie!
"What do we do now?" I asked.
"You have to wait for 15 minutes to let the mask do its work. Then you
wash it off and you have nice clean soft skin!" Mrs. Jones replied. "Then
a lotion and finally I'll let you girls play whatever you want!"
We sat around and talked for a few minutes after Mrs. Jones left. Every
time one of us looked in the mirror, we all started to giggle. It just
looked so funny with the three of us all in pink goop!
"Janet! It's time for you to wash off the mask!" Mrs. Jones called from
the kitchen. "Donna! You and Lisa have about five more minutes!"
Janet left to go wash her face. Donna looked at me and giggled some more.
"We really do look funny, you know."
"I know. It's also kind of boring just sitting around waiting. So what
should we do next? Your Mom left us all kinds of things to mess around
with. Maybe Janet would know how to use some of these things?" I asked.
"Janet? Why would she... O-o-h-h! That is right! Lisa, I have a secret to
tell you. You have to 'pinkie swear' that you'll never tell!" Donna said.
"I swear! I'll never tell anyone!" I replied and held up my pinkie on my
right hand to shake with Donna Anne's.
"Janet is really my best friend, Jeff," Donna said. "We both decided to
be girls last Halloween and we both have continued to dress as girls once
in awhile since. We've been to movies and lunch, she was supposed to be
with me roller-skating when I met you, but she got sick that morning and
couldn't go."
"Oh!" Was all I could think to say? Janet was a boy, pretending to be a
girl, just like Donna and me. I believe I read a line in a book
somewhere... 'This just gets curiouser and curiouser...'
Janet came back into the bedroom looking normal again. Then it was my
turn and finally Donna that had to go wash the mask off. When we returned
to her bedroom, we all put on a lotion that Mrs. Jones had shown us.
"Lisa! I want to play with your hair. Come sit in this chair for me."
Janet said.
"Okay! What do you want to do to it?" I asked.
"Just play! I like to play with hair! You just sit and chat; I'll be your
'beautician'. You'll be 'Gawwwgeeeous' when I get done!" Janet giggled.
So we sat there and talked about school, movies, Nintendo games, dolls
and music. All the while Janet was brushing and combing my hair different
ways. Eventually she had it in rollers and told me to change places with
Donna Anne. Janet proceeded to do similar things to Donna's hair while we
continued to talk.
"Where did you learn to do so much with hair?" I asked.
"I work on my own hair a lot at home. Although it is much easier to work
on someone else," Janet replied.
"I know! I just learned how to use a curling iron on my own hair and my
sister's. It is difficult to get it right when looking in a mirror," I
told Janet. "I think I do a better job on my sister's hair."
"Did you do the style you had when you got here? It looked like one
of'Charlie's Angels'." Donna said.
"No. My Grandmother fixed it for me when I was changing at her house to
come over here. She thought I would look great with it that way. I really
liked it!" I told them.
"Having hair like this is a little limiting as to style, so I play when I
can to figure out more ways to wear it," Janet said. "I mean, I just love
it so long, but it's a wig, and they just don't change the style very
easy. My Mom would shoot me if I even thought about cutting it!" Janet
said.
"A wig? I thought you just had long hair?" I said, surprised.
"No, it's a wig. See?" Janet said as she showed me the edge of her wig. I
could see the bobby pins that held it in place.
"Is it uncomfortable?" I asked.
"Not really, it just took getting used to the weight and the length of
all the hair," Janet replied.
By twelve thirty, we were all in curlers. We decided to paint our toes
and fingers the same color! After all, we were all together for the
weekend. When we finished we all had bright pink nails!
I remember Donna taking out her collection of Barbie's and a few outfits,
but I was holding my new teddy bear...
"(Whispered) Li-i-s-s-a-a! Time to get up!" Donna was shaking my shoulder
gently as she said this.
"Huh? Oh! Good morning Donna, I must have fallen asleep!" I said
surprised.
"Yea! It's Nine O'clock! We have to get moving, Mom has lots of things
planned for us today." Donna replied.
I went to scratch my head, as I do every morning and found all the
curlers still in my hair. I fell asleep with my robe still on, so someone
just covered me with a blanket. I went to find Donna's Mom to see about
my hair.
I found Mrs. Jones in the kitchen singing to a song on the radio and
making pancakes for breakfast.
"Good morning Mrs. Jones," I said.
"Oh. Good morning Lisa," She replied. "It's a beautiful morning, yes?"
she asked.
"Yes it is. Um-m-m, Mrs. Jones, what do I do with all these curlers? I
didn't see the basket to put them away." I asked.
"Go up to the bathroom and have one of the other girls help you remove
them, Donna knows where the basket is. I'll be up in a moment to help you
style your hair. Have you ever slept in rollers before?" Mrs. Jones
asked.
"No," I said while shaking my head. "Is that a bad thing?" I asked.
Mrs. Jones laughed. "No, Lisa it isn't. It's what we all did before they
invented blow dryers and curling irons! Your hair will look like you used
the blow dryer and curling iron when we get done!"
I padded my way back upstairs and found Janet coming out of the bathroom.
"Janet! Would you mind helping me get all the curlers out of my head?
Please?" I asked as sweetly as I could.
"Sure! Come on in the bathroom we put the basket back in here when Donna
and I decided to go to sleep. You were already out cold, so we just
covered you up and let you sleep. Donna's Mom thought you looked just too
cute laying where you were," Janet giggled.
We went into the bathroom and Janet took out the basket while I started
taking out some of the rollers. Janet started on the back of my head and
it didn't seem to take very long before the basket was full and my head
was a mass of curls!
She was just putting the basket back into the cabinet when Donna and her
Mom walked up to the bathroom door. "We won't fit in here, so let's go
into Donna Anne's room" Mrs. Jones said as she turned and led the way.
Like a trio of little ducklings, we followed her into Donna's bedroom.
"Sit here Lisa and I'll show you how to fix your hair" Mrs. Jones pointed
at Donna's vanity stool as she spoke.
Donna's Mom should have been a teacher! She explained all she was doing
to the others and me and took the time to show us how to do it. She used
a brush and then a comb and when she was all done it looked just like my
Grandmother had styled my hair the day before! I looked like a short
version of one of 'Charlie's Angels'.
"There! All done! See, without a curling iron too!" Mrs. Jones was so
excited about the way my hair turned out.
"I love it! Thank you so much Mrs. Jones! I think I could even do this
myself, with a little practice"! I said while turning my head back and
forth in front of the mirror.
She then did Donna's hair and when she offered to do Janet's, she
declined, telling Mrs. Jones she liked to do it herself.
"I really do like doing my own hair. Ask my Mom, she'll tell you all the
time I spend playing with it," Janet stated.
"We have to get everyone dressed and have breakfast. There is a lot to do
today!" Mrs. Jones said as she stood up and headed for the door. "Okay
Janet. I'll see you all downstairs for breakfast in fifteen minutes! So,
get moving girls! Dress casual, we will be a lot of places today!"
"So jeans or a skirt?" Janet asked. "I have to run home to change and
want to match you two!"
"Jeans! I think all the places we are going they will be the most
comfortable. We can always change later if we have to," replied Donna
Ann.
"Okay! Be back as soon as I can!" Janet yelled over her shoulder. She
took off down the steps to get her jacket and go to her house to change.
"We better hurry! Mom doesn't like to wait too long," Donna said as we
entered her room.
I took out my case and got out my bra, panties, and blue slouch socks,
the new top with the flowers and my new pink and white aerobic shoes.
Then I looked in the garment bag and took my new jeans off the hanger.
"Where can I change?" I asked Donna.
"Use the bathroom. I'm done in there. I was up before everyone else,"
replied Donna Anne.
I carried all my clothes to the bathroom along with my small travel case.
After brushing teeth and carefully washing my face, I got dressed. The
bra gave me some trouble, but I finally remembered to turn it around to
hook it. After I was almost dressed, I could not figure out how to get my
top on without messing up my hair.
"Donna?" I called out the bathroom door. "Could you come here a minute?"
"Be right there! Just finishing up here," she replied.
About one minute later Donna walked out of her room and looked at me.
"What's up?" she asked.
"I can't figure out how to get my top on without messing up the hairstyle
your Mom did for me," I said.
"I can help!" Donna said. She proceeded to hold my hair out of the way
while I slid the top carefully over my head. After my head was through
the hole, she gently set my hair down.
"There! I think it's still okay. Check in the mirror," Donna stated.
I looked in the mirror behind Donna's vanity; my hair was still in place.
Everything looked good, so far. I took out my necklace and earrings and
put them on. A little 'Skin so Soft', and I was ready to meet the day.
As I was entering, the kitchen Janet was coming in the back door. She was
dressed similar to Donna and I in a cute green top and jeans. We all sat
down to breakfast, which was pancakes and bacon with orange juice. I ate
VERY CAREFULLY since I didn't want to get syrup on my clothes. I must
have used fifty napkins to make sure!
After breakfast I put my dishes in the sink and went to the bathroom to
check my clothes. No spills! I was getting better at this 'keeping clean'
part of being a girl.
I finished in the bathroom and then headed back to the kitchen to find
everyone else. Dishes were just finished and Mrs. Jones told us to go and
get ready to leave, we had places to go this morning.
I went and grabbed my purse and my jacket. I checked my purse and found
that Mom or Grandma had put a five-dollar bill in it. Cool! I had some
'extra' money this weekend!
We all went out and got into the Jones's car.
"Everyone buckled up?" Mrs. Jones asked. We all said yes, so she started
the car and we were on our way.
We drove through many neighborhoods and finally came to a mall. We
entered the mall as a group, safety in numbers you know, and proceeded to
enter a salon on one end near a Sears store.
"May I help you?" The lady's nametag said Gloria.
"We have appointments for a spa treatment for all of us today," Mrs.
Jones responded. "Jones? Should be for four people."
"Let me see. Here it is! I see it is a birthday present! Which one is
Donna Anne?" Gloria asked.
"Me! It's my birthday and these are my friends, Janet and Lisa," replied
Donna.
"Well Happy Birthday! If the four of you would like to hang your jackets
and then take a seat, I will see how soon we can start your present!"
Gloria indicated a group of chairs arranged in a semicircle. It sort of
kept that area separate from the rest of the shop.
We all went over, hung up our jackets, and then took a seat. Donna sat
between Janet and me. She picked up a hairstyle book from the table and
the three of us started to look through it. I had never been in a salon
as Lisa before, so this was new and exciting for me. I didn't know there
were so many styles you could have your hair done in! It must really be
hard to decide which one to have the stylist do for you. Especially if
you have to pick out a new style ever time, you came in.
We were looking at styles and trying to decide who would look good in
what hair style when a group of three ladies walked up to us.
"Girls! We are ready for you now. If you would come this way?" A tall
lady whose name was Lisa pointed the way for us to go. We followed the
three back into the rear of the shop. A large room was there with four
long tall tables in it. "This is the beginning of your spa experience!"
said Lisa. "We ask that you remove your tops and put on a smock, we don't
want to get your clothes messy."
"Just our tops?" Janet asked, while looking over the smock she was
handed.
"Yes, we use a special mud pack for part of the facial and it is very
sticky, so it is hard to get out of your clothes. Accidents do happen and
we don't want that to ruin your day here." Lisa replied.
"Lisa?" Mrs. Jones called.
Both the beautician and I replied at the same time, "Yes!"
"Hmm-m-m. This could be a problem. I need the younger Lisa," Mrs. Jones
said.
"We can fix that. My middle name is Marie, so just call me 'LisaMarie'
and then there won't be any confusion." LisaMarie was smiling.
There were small cubicles for everyone to change in, so we each took a
cubicle and changed. I hung my top on the hanger in the room and put on
the smock LisaMarie had handed to me. I checked my hair in the mirror and
then opened the door to step out.
We waited a moment for Janet to finish changing, I guess her long hair
was getting in the way, so we just stood there and waited. Finally she
came out and LisaMarie ushered us over to the set of four tables.
"Everyone pick a table and lay down face up and just relax. Kerri and
Joanne will be here in a minute to help me and we are going to do a mud
pack and then a facial scrub to all of you!" LisaMarie said.
I went over to a table and lay down. I was a little nervous, I mean, I
had never been in a place like this before. Kerri came over and smiled at
me. She then stepped on a button and the table started to rise.
"Scared? I was the first time I had a spa treatment. I didn't know what
was going to happen. If you just lay back and relax, I promise you will
love everything that will happen today!" Kerri told me in a very relaxing
voice.
"A little scared, yes. I just don't know what's going to happen. I've
only had my hair cut in a salon before today." I replied. I tried to lay
back and relax by closing my eyes and breathing deep slow breaths. It did
help a little.
"First I'm going to use a cleanser on your face, It might sting a little
since there is some alcohol in it." Kerri said. She proceeded to use a
little scrub pad and dip it in a sweet smelling liquid and rubbed it all
over my face. It didn't smell too bad, but you could tell there was
alcohol in it. I closed my eyes and tried to lay there and enjoy having
someone else clean my face and neck. It was... 'Different'.
When Kerri finished, she told me to keep my eyes closed, so she could put
the mudpack on. It was special mud from 'Armenia', or some other place
with starving children, I forget exactly where. It felt warm and mushy
when the 'mud' was applied. It smelled 'fruity' for some reason, like
fruit punch Kool-Aid.
"There! All done," Kerri said. "Now just lay there and relax, I need you
to close your eyes one more time, so I can put these cucumber slices over
your eyes."
"Cucumber slices?" I asked. "Why?"
"They help keep the sagging down under your eyelids, so they stay young
looking. I doubt you have any real reason to use them since you are so
young, but they are part of the service. When you get older you will be
very conscious of how your eyes age and will welcome a little slice with
a mud pack," Kerri answered.
The cucumber slices were cold when Kerri placed them over my eyes. There
wasn't anything to do except lay there. I think I fell asleep!
"Lisa!" (shaking shoulder)"Wake up! It's time to clear off the mud pack."
Kerri was saying as she gently shook my shoulder.
I got up from the table and looked around. There were three other people
lying there with mud on their faces and cucumbers on their eyes! I
couldn't help it! I started to giggle...a lot!
"What's so funny?" Came a voice from under one of the mudpacks. "Who's
laughing?" I believe it was Donna Anne talking.
"It's Lisa! I was looking at all of you laying there, all brownish-green,
and realized just how funny it looks!" I tried to hold back from laughing
but little giggles kept popping out anyway.
"Lisa, let's get you washed off and moisturized so we can let everyone
else up from their tables." Kerri said as she led me to a sink. She had
me bend over a sink and then adjusted the water spray temperature and
sprayed the mudpack off my face. When it was all cleaned off Kerri took a
bottle of stuff and rubbed it all over my face. She said it was a
cleanser to make sure ALL the mud had been removed. After that I had a
moisturizer rubbed all over and she pronounced me done.
Kerri then took the other three, one at a time, and did the same to them.
Soon we were clean-faced and ready for some more pampering.
"What's next?" asked Donna.
"We are now going to do pedicures and manicures on all of you. This will
take a little while since we only have two nail stations. I'll get Lisa
to help." Kerri went to get 'LisaMarie', as we were told to call her, and
then brought us all out into the main salon for our nail treatments.
I sat in the waiting area with Janet while Donna and her Mom had their
nails done. We just chatted about school, homework and how some of the
hairstyles in the magazines would look on us. You know, just regular girl
stuff. When we saw Donna having her fingernails done, we got up, and went
to watch.
"Your toes look great!" I told Donna, as Janet and I walked up behind her
chair.
"Thanks! I like the way they look too!" Donna replied.
At this point Kerri was working on finishing Donna's fingers. They were
being done in a medium pink. Not real bright, like we did last night, but
not pale either. It looked just about right for someone eleven years old.
"Are we all getting the same color?" Janet asked.
"Yes. This color will go well with all of you. It will even look good
with your red hair," stated Kerri.
Janet and I just nodded as we watched her finish putting the color on
Donna's fingernails and put them in a little dryer.
"What's that?" I asked.
"It's a little fan that blows air over the polish to dry it quicker. We
do the toes first because we don't have a dryer for them. They have to
just dry on their own," Kerri explained.
Donna was done in less than five minutes. Then it was my turn. It felt
funny having those cotton ball things put between my toes. They made me
want to wriggle my toes. Kerri seemed to be doing all three of us, so I
just sat there and let her play with my toes. It was hard to do! I mean,
my toes are VERY ticklish and I was giggling like crazy the whole time.
She was finally finished with my toes and started on my fingers.
"You have nice long nails Lisa. It shows that you know how to take care
of them," Kerri commented as she filed and shaped my nails.
"My Mom showed me how to care for them and I just keep taking care of
them that way," I replied.
"Tell your Mom she taught you very well, Okay?" Kerri said.
"Sure!" I replied.
Next Kerri took my hands and placed them in a bowl of liquid. She said
that I was to let them soak so they would be good and clean. Also, the
cuticles would be soft and able to be pushed back easily. It didn't seem
like a long time and Kerri started pushing back the cuticles on my nails.
When all that was done, she coated them in the same color as Donna
Anne's, two coats and then a clear coat, 'So they don't chip easily'.
I went and sat for a few minutes to let all the polish finish drying.
While I sat there, Janet had her feet done. When her feet were done,
Kerri had me come over. She removed the cotton from my toes and told me I
could put the slippers back on.
After Janet was finished, Kerri put away all the nail items and called
Donna to her stylist's chair. Donna sat and Kerri did a nice of job of
doing a very light makeup. This consisted of just a little eye shadow,
some mascara and a lip-gloss.
"At your age, you don't need any more!" Kerri told Donna.
After the makeup, she restyled Donna's hair and gave a spray to hold it
in place. She worked with a sprayer, a curling iron and a round brush.
When she was done Donna had a 'Charlie's Angel' hairstyle similar to
mine!
Next, it was my turn. This was new to me. Mom had only let me wear a
little lip-gloss to church. So this makeup thing was really cool! I
watched VERY closely to everything Kerri did to me. First she examined my
face and then checked a couple of colors against it. She decided on a
light Taupe eye shadow. She used very little on each lid, but it made my
eyes look bigger. Then a brown mascara which really brought attention to
my eyes! Finally, a pink tinted lip-gloss, which made my lips look like I
had just eaten strawberries. She then pulled out the curling iron and
redid my 'Charlie's Angels' hairstyle and sprayed it into place.
"Voila! Mademoiselle!" Kerri said as she turned me to the mirror.
I looked at the person in the mirror. It looked like me but maybe a
little older. Maybe twelve or even thirteen! "I like it! Thank you so
much Kerri!" I gushed. I was very excited. "Oh? Can I have a list of the
cosmetics you used?" I asked. "I want my Mom to see how I looked today,
when I get home."
"Don't worry Lisa, I have all the cosmetics here for you," Mrs. Jones
said. "It's our little gift to you for coming to the party this weekend".
"Really? Neat! Thank you so-o-o much Mrs. Jones! That is so cool! I'll
have to show my sister Janet how to use them when I get home," I said.
Next, it was Janet Stickney's turn. Kerri used different things for her
makeover. She told us that since Janet was a redhead and fair-skinned the
same colors would look funny on her. When Kerri was done, she took
Janet's hair and changed it so that it looked more like another
'Charlie's Angel' style. Not quite as good as mine, since Janet has
really long hair. The basic idea was there and we thought we looked
pretty cool!
"Girls! Now that we are done here, please thank Kerri and everyone else
for a lovely time," Mrs. Jones said.
The three of us tried to speak at the same time. Kerri was laughing.
"You're very welcome! You all look wonderful! Do come back again."
Mrs. Jones ushered us to the back of the salon. The three of us were so
busy chattering on about the experience that we didn't realize where we
were until Mrs. Jones tried to get our attention.
"Since it is lunch time, I thought we would stop for something to eat and
have your presents opened there. I put the gifts in the trunk this
morning, so we can carry them in with us." Mrs. Jones told us when she
finally got our attention.
"Chucky Cheese's?" Donna asked.
"I thought you might want to go there. I called ahead for a reservation,"
Mrs. Jones replied. "Now hurry and change out of those smocks or we will
be late!"
"What's Chucky Cheese's?" I asked. I had never heard of such a place.
"It's a pizza place with an arcade and games and stuff. It's a lot of
fun!" Donna replied excitedly.
So, that's where we went. I have to tell you, I had never been into a
place like this before. There was a plastic ball play pit, an arcade, and
every half-hour, this group of animated bears would light up and sing a
song! Mrs. Jones gave us each a roll of tokens for the arcade games. We
were having a lot of fun, especially in the ball pit and playing 'Whack-
a-Mole'. Then Mrs. Jones found us and said the pizza had arrived.
"I still have some tokens. Can we stay after we eat?" Janet asked.
"How did you end up with tokens? I used all mine in no time at all!" I
asked Janet.
"I watched you and Donna play a few of the games before I tried some. I
have six tokens left, I'll share with you and Donna after we eat," Janet
said.
We ate pizza, drank cokes, and chattered on about all the things we had
done today. It was really a great day so far. As we emptied the pizza
pan, our server and a small group of other waiters and waitresses came
over to our table.
"Who's the Birthday Girl? 'Our waitress, Amy, asked.
"DONNA!" Janet and I yelled. We pointed at Donna Anne. She sat there
turning red from embarrassment.
"Come along birthday girl we have a surprise!" Amy said as she went over,
took Donna's hand and led her towards the stage with the animated bears.
A single spotlight came on and Donna was asked to sit on the stool in the
spotlight. Then all the waiters and waitresses gathered around her and
the bears lit up! "We have a birthday girl here!" Boomed the lead bear.
"Everybody sing!"
At that time all the bears started playing 'Happy Birthday' in a sort of
hillbilly style and only paused for everyone to say "Donna" at the
appropriate place. When the song was over everyone was clapping and
wishing Donna a happy birthday. Amy then led Donna back to our table.
"On behalf of all of us at Chucky Cheese's we want to wish you a Happy
Birthday AND to allow you more fun, this gift certificate for a medium
pizza on your next visit!" Amy handed Donna an envelope containing her
gift certificate. It said 'Happy Birthday' on it.
Now that the ceremony was over, everyone went back to work and the other
people went back to their pizza.
"Let's open your presents!" Mrs. Jones said.
She reached over to a side table that had been set up to hold the
presents and moved the top box over to Donna Anne. It was wrapped in
Minnie Mouse paper and had a ribbon and a big bow on it. Janet poked my
arm and told me it was from her.
Donna opened the card. "Thank You Janet!" and she passed the card for us
to see. Then she tried very hard to open the box carefully. Inside was a
'Minnie Mouse' doll and a matching T-shirt with Minnie Mouse on it. "Oh
how cute!" Donna said as she held the T-shirt up in front of her.
She placed the shirt and doll back in the box and then was handed my
present. She opened the card. "Thank you Lisa!" She said and passed my
card around for everyone to see. Again, she was careful opening the
present. "Look! A 'Cabbage Patch' doll! And she comes with her own 'Birth
Certificate' too!" Donna gushed.
She took out the doll and had to show everyone who would look that she
had a Cabbage Patch doll. Finally she placed it back into the box and
opened the present from her Mom. It was a skirt and sweater combination.
The skirt was a purple plaid and the sweater was a solid purple color.
When Donna held it up to herself, it looked great! It was just the right
color for her. I think black tights would make it perfect.
Donna thanked her Mom for the present and packed it back into its box. We
helped her carry all of the packages to the car while Mrs. Jones paid the
bill for the pizza.
As Mrs. Jones came out the door Janet said, "Hey, I still have these
tokens! Can we go back in and play a few more games?"
"Oh! I forgot. Okay, but do hurry! It's after 3 O'clock and we don't have
a lot of time," Mrs. Jones replied.
The three of us trooped back into the arcade and played a few two-person
games. That used up Janet's six tokens pretty fast. I let Donna win one
time, since it was her birthday. I mean, even though we were dressed as
girls, is no reason you can't shoot space aliens!
When the last 'Game Over' flashed on the screen, we headed out the door
to go to our next adventure of the weekend.
"All right girls! We are headed home for a moment; I want you to change
into something nice. We are meeting Donna's father at home, then off to
the movies and then we will go out for dinner. I think a skirt and blouse
would be appropriate," Mrs. Jones hinted directly at Donna. I think Donna
understood that her new outfit would be nice.
We got back to Donna's house and helped carry the presents up to her
room. There she went about unpacking, hung her Minnie Mouse shirt in her
closet, and placed Minnie and 'Karri', the cabbage patch doll, on her
bed. She filled in her 'birth' certificate 'Karri Marie Jones' to be
mailed by her Mom later. I thought it was neat that she got to name her
own doll.
After all the boxes were cleaned up and given to Mrs. Jones we decided we
had better change. Janet left for her house to change and I went to get
my case and my skirt and blouse.
I looked in the garment bag and had to make a decision. What to wear? I
giggled to myself; I had never had that problem before. Just grab the
first button down shirt and pair of pants in my closet and go! Now I had
to decide what combination of skirt and blouse and tights to wear.
I went to the door and called Mrs. Jones. When she answered, I asked. "Is
this a fancy dinner after the movie?"
"Fairly nice, yes. We will be going to Donna's favorite Italian
restaurant after the movie." Mrs. Jones replied. "Why do you ask, Lisa?"
"I just wanted to make sure I dressed appropriately for where we would be
going," I responded.
I closed the door to the bedroom and decided the Burgundy top, the Gray
pleated skirt with black tights and my 'Mary Jane's' would be best. I had
considered leaving my blue top on, but when I found out we were going to
Donna's favorite place to eat, I decided the dressier top would be
better.
I took my skirt off the hanger and my top out of the case and laid them
on the bed. I took out both a white and black pair of tights. For some
reason, I liked the white tights better, so I put the black ones back in
the case.
I changed as quickly as I could after that, being careful not to mess my
hair or my makeup. The hardest part was putting on the Burgundy top
without messing up my hair. After getting on the tights and the Gray
skirt, I reached into the case and put on my half-slip. I buckled my
shoes and went to check myself in the bathroom mirror.
Donna was doing the same thing. She looked great in her new outfit. The
purple sweater with the plaid skirt and white tights with 'Mary Jane's'
looked just right for a girl our age. The makeup still looked okay except
for her lips.
"I think you need to redo your lipstick." I said to Donna.
"You too!" She replied.
"Your new outfit looks great! I really like it." I told her honestly.
"Thanks! Mom just seems to know what looks good on me. Although I don't
get to go shopping when she does it this way." Donna said. "Let's go see
if we can talk Mom out of the lipsticks in our goody bags that she bought
this morning!"
We went downstairs, found Mrs. Jones and asked if we could use the
lipstick to redo our lips. She consented and dug out the bags from the
closet and gave us each our own tube.
"After you touch up your lips, just put them in your purses." Mrs. Jones
said. "You will probably need them after the movie and again after
dinner."
We went back upstairs; I fixed my lipstick in the bathroom. I guess I
took a long time, trying to be careful and all, because I wasn't finished
when Donna knocked and came in. I jumped when she knocked, but luckily,
didn't draw a red line up the side of my face!
We checked each other over and decided we looked good. We heard the
doorbell ring and Donna went to answer it. I went back into the
guestroom, put away my clothes and took everything back to Donna's
closet. As I turned to go find Donna, she and Janet walked into the
bedroom.
Janet looked wonderful! She managed to keep her hair just like it was and
she had on a green top with a matching green skirt, white tights and, of
course, 'Mary Jane's'. Somewhere, she had even found a lipstick that
matched what she had on at the salon.
"Janet! You look great!" I said.
"You look very nice too, Lisa." Janet replied.
After we finished complimenting each other about our clothes and
discussing where we had gotten our tops and skirts Mr. Jones walked in
the back door.
"Hi! I'm home! Anyone here?" he asked.
"Hi Daddy!" Donna said as she hugged him and kissed his cheek. "Mom is
upstairs getting changed."
"I see the three of you are ready, I'll be ready in a second." Mr. Jones
said as he went up the stairs to his room.
We sat in the living room and talked for a few minutes while Donna's
parents got ready to leave. The topic was interesting.
"Hmph! This is so-o-o weird." I said.
"What's weird?" Donna asked.
"Well sort of cool, but weird. I mean, here we are all dressed to go to a
movie and dinner. Yet, all three of us are boys dressed as girls. That's
what's weird, I guess," I replied.
"I see. But, we all like to dress like this right? It's like we all
wanted to be here dressed this way, right?" Donna asked.
"I like it!" said Janet.
"Me too!" I said right after Janet.
"I thought it would be fun to have an 'all girl' weekend after Mom told
me you were really a boy too, Lisa," Donna said.
"Oh! I'm having a lot of fun, I think the three of us look maybe twelve
or thirteen with our hair and makeup like this and I am having a
wonderful time here. I just thought it was funny for a minute..." I
replied. "I didn't mean to upset anyone."
"Yea! I know what you mean; I had those thoughts too. Especially at the
salon," replied Janet. "I just thought it was me, so I kept quiet."
"So...are we going to stay girlfriends for the rest of the weekend?"
asked Donna.
"Of course!" Janet and I said at the same time.
"You owe me a coke!" Janet said first.
"Okay. Still all girlfriends?" I asked Donna and Janet.
"Always!" Replied Donna.
We all hugged in a three-way group hug. As boys, we would never have done
that, but as girlfriends, it just seemed the right thing to do at the
time.
We were still hugging when Mr. and Mrs. Jones came down the stairs.
"Everyone ready?" asked Mrs. Jones, "Janet, you look lovely tonight."
"Thank you Mrs. Jones," replied Janet.
"Everyone into the car or we will miss the movie," Mr. Jones said while
checking his watch. With that announcement, Mr. Jones ushered everyone
out of the house and into the car. After we all buckled our seatbelts, he
started the car and we were off to the movies!
That night we went to see 'The Spy Who Loved Me'. It's the new 'James
Bond' movie. This was cool! I am a BIG Bond fan so this was the perfect
movie to see.
On the way out of the theater I looked at Donna, put my hand to my
forehead and my other hand on her shoulder and said, "Oh! James..." And
pretended to swoon! That brought out giggles from both Donna and Janet.
We went to a very nice Italian restaurant for dinner. I really wanted
spaghetti, but every time I eat that, I get more on me than in me! I
looked over the menu carefully and decided on the child's portion of
Lasagna. It came with a small salad and a bread stick. I figured that I
could manage to eat that without making a mess.
"Why are you ordering a child's portion?" Janet asked.
"Too much popcorn at the movie! I'm not really very hungry," I replied.
"Oh! We did eat a lot there didn't we?" Janet said, "But I really like
the food here."
"You order what you want, I'm just not hungry," I said a second time.
The rest of dinner went well. We told Mr. Jones all about our salon
experience, including the 'mud packs'. Then, how we had a good time at
'Chucky Cheese's' for lunch. I finished my dinner and excused myself to
use the bathroom. Donna, Janet and Mrs. Jones thought it was a good idea,
so we all left the table at the same time.
I had always noticed that girls went to the bathroom in groups! Here, we
were doing exactly the same thing! We all entered the 'Ladies' room and
did what we needed to do. Janet, Donna and I were waiting for Mrs. Jones.
When she came out, she told us that we should 'refresh' our lip color.
She told us that a girl always had to do that since you ate it all off
your lips when eating a meal. In looking in the mirror, we saw she was
right. So we took out our lipsticks and proceeded to put it back on.
Soon we were all beautiful again so we went out of the powder room and
left the restaurant. Mr. Jones was such a gentleman. He insisted on
helping each of us with our coats and then holding the exit door for us.
That really does make you feel special when someone treats you like that!
In no time at all we were back at the Jones's house and inside.
"Why don't the three of you change into nightgowns and just relax. It's
already after nine PM so there isn't much to watch on TV," Mrs. Jones
said. "Then you can spend as long as you like chatting in Donna's room or
in the family room, if you like."
We went upstairs to get our clothes and change. I carefully looked over
my clothes as I folded them to put them back in my case. I did it! I
successfully ate pizza AND lasagna without getting anything RED on my
clothes! Not that it would have shown much on my Burgundy top, but my
Grey skirt might have been ruined! I finished putting away all my clothes
and carefully put the nightgown on, trying hard not to mess up my hair. I
put on my robe and slippers and came out the door just as Donna was
exiting her room.
"Hi! I just need to put my case and garment bag in your closet," I said.
"Meet you in the family room?"
"Sure. I'll go set up a video game," Donna replied. "Oh yea, bring along
the blanket at the foot of my bed. We are going to spend all night
downstairs!"
I went and put my stuff away and grabbed the blanket. I was just leaving
Donna's room when I thought about my teddy bear. If we were going to
spend all night downstairs, I wanted my bear with me! So I grabbed
'Bonnie' and went to find Janet and Donna.
They already had the Atari out and were playing 'Space Invaders'. I
looked at them and giggled to myself, I remembered how I just wasn't as
interested in killing aliens when I am dressed as Lisa.
I let the two of them play and I went and set up a sleep/chat area by the
couch. After laying out some big pillows and a couple of beanbag chairs,
I took a couple of blankets that were lying on the arm of the couch and
made three 'beds'. I picked out one for me and placed 'Bonnie' on it as a
placeholder. Then I wandered over and watched, Janet beat Donna at 'Space
Invaders'.
Janet asked if I wanted to play and I told her I really just wanted to
chat and sort of lay around instead. Especially since this was the last
night of the sleepover, and after church and breakfast it would all be
over.
She understood and turned off the game and came to lay on one of the beds
I made. Donna had gone back upstairs and returned carrying her Cabbage
Patch Doll 'Karri'.
"I saw your Bear there and decided to go get my doll," Donna said as she
returned. "Janet! Would you like a doll or stuffed animal for tonight?"
"Could I have Minnie?" Janet asked excitedly, "I think she is so-o-o
neat!"
"Sure! I can go get her for...," Donna was cut off in mid sentence.
"I'll go!" Yelled Janet as she ran up the stairs. Donna and I looked at
each other and giggled a little. In no time, Janet came racing back into
the room carrying Minnie Mouse.
"Now that we are all settled what should we do?" Donna asked.
"I just want to get to know both of you," I said, "I mean, we have gone
places and done things all day. We really haven't gotten to know each
other, and I really want us to be friends, regardless of how we are
dressed. Although being 'girlfriends' is kinda neat!"
So, that is what we did. We sat there and chatted about school, hobbies
as both boys and girls. We talked about sports; music, more sports,
clothes and how different girl's clothes were from boy's. We were on the
topic of summer vacation when Mrs. Jones came into the room carrying a
basket.
"You girls need to clean off your makeup and set your hair for tomorrow!"
She said, "I brought along cold cream, tissues, rollers and setting
solution so we can duplicate the styles from today, okay?"
"That's great Mrs. Jones," Janet replied.
We then spent the next hour cleansing away our makeup and rolling each
other's hair. Things went faster tonight, I guess that with having done
it last night and then being at the salon, we were getting used to using
the rollers and clips. Seeing each of us in rollers didn't look so funny
this time. We each tried very hard to make sure the rollers were tight
and rolled like they should be. We wanted to all look like 'Charlie's
Angels' in the morning for church.
When we were finished and commenting about how much older the makeup had
made us look, Mr. Jones came into the room to see what was going on.
"I thought you had gotten lost!" He said to Mrs. Jones.
"Just helping the girls remove their makeup and set their hair," she
replied.
"I brought some snacks. I know I was always hungry at sleepovers," Mr.
Jones said.
"It's a SLUMBER party Daddy!" Donna told him.
"Oh! Sorry. I'll try to remember that," Mr. Jones grinned.
Mr. Jones set down some chips, pretzels and sodas for us and then helped
his wife carry all the left over things out of the room.
I grabbed 'Bonnie', my bear, and used her to prop me up so we could get
back to talking. We giggled about the salon and all the things we had
experienced today. I know it was a long day because while Donna and I
were comparing our manicures, Janet fell asleep. After that we tried to
be quiet and talk softly, but it didn't last long...
"Wake up girls! Time to get ready for church!" Mrs. Jones had come in to
get us up.
Donna groaned and covered her head with her doll, then sat up with a
start. "Ow-w-w, that hurt!" when I opened my eyes, there was Donna,
rubbing her head.
"What happened? Are you okay?" I asked in concern.
"I just banged my head with my doll and it HURTS!" Donna replied.
"Oh!" I said, trying hard not to giggle. I could imagine the image of
Donna clunking herself in the head with 'Karri'. It looked like something
out of a cartoon, in my mind.
Janet was sitting up next to me now and she was trying not to laugh too.
It was getting harder by the second not to break out laughing. Donna
noticed us trying hard not to look at each other and trying even harder
to stifle our giggles.
"It's NOT funny! It really hurt!" She cried, "Stop laughing!" She tried
to cry, but ended up giggling and smiling too.
That was all it took! All three of us were laughing like crazy when Mrs.
Jones walked into the family room. She asked what happened and through
our laughing, we tried to tell her, but every time one of us tried, we
just started laughing again. I think we each tried twice before Janet
finally managed to tell her how Donna had hit herself in the head with
her new doll.
Mrs. Jones smiled and went to look at Donna's head. "No blood! No dent!"
Then she looked at 'Karri'. "You seem ok too! That big old mean Donna
didn't hurt you, did she?"
"MOTHER-R-R-R!" Donna shouted.
Mrs. Jones just smiled. "You wouldn't want the youngest member of this
family to start crying would you?"
Donna's mouth dropped open. She looked at the doll and then at her Mom.
Her mouth opened and closed but no sounds came out. Finally she just
slumped and let out a big sigh.
After all the giggling slowed down Mrs. Jones suggested we go have
breakfast. We all put on our robes and trooped into the kitchen to the
smell of bacon and seeing Mr. Jones cooking French toast at the stove.
When we finished, Janet made a quick run to her house, carrying her
clothes from yesterday. I went up to Donna's room and took out my clean
bra, panties, full slip, cream colored tights and my cream colored dress.
I took the underwear with me into the bathroom and took a shower. I used
a shower cap to keep my hair dry and just used the nicest smelling soap I
could find.
When I was done and dry I got dressed. I took my nightshirt, robe, and
panties and my used bra back into Donna's room and put them back into my
case. I knew it had to be my last day as Lisa, I had now run out of clean
clothes! The only clean things left in my case were a pair of tights, a
camisole and a pair of panties!
I sat in front of Donna's mirror and removed the curlers from my hair.
Then carefully, I redid my hair so it looked pretty close to the way
Kerri, at the salon, had done it yesterday. I looked in my purse and used
a little mascara and lipstick, then put on my earrings, necklace and a
little 'Skin so Soft' as cologne.
Donna had returned from her shower. She helped me put on my dress and not
mess up my hair. While she was finishing getting dressed I put everything
back into my case and garment bag. I finished closing the case as Donna
finished her hair. I helped her put on a very pretty floral print dress.
It had a scoop neck and ruffles in two layers around the lower part of
the skirt. It sort-of gave it a frilly look. I must admit though, it did
look good on her!
Donna did her eyes and lips as I did and used some 'Love's Baby Soft'
cologne. She added earrings and a necklace and we were both ready for
church. We then went down to the front room to wait for Janet and Donna's
mom and dad.
We had just sat down when there was a knock at the back door. Donna went
and let Janet in. She looked very nice. She had on a purple dress with
white trim along with white tights and her 'Mary Jane's'. She had redone
her hair so we all matched again and had also done her makeup. We spent a
couple of minutes complimenting each other on our outfits.
We were interrupted by Mr. Jones: "Ahem! We need to gather coats and
things and get going if we are going to make church!"
Donna and I went and got our coats and purses and were buttoning the last
button when Mrs. Jones came downstairs ready for church. It didn't take
but a few seconds and we were out the door and in the car. The ride to
church was uneventful, actually the three of us were pretty quiet. I was
wondering what church would be like. I had asked Donna what church we
were going to and she replied 'The First United Methodist'. I have only
been to a Catholic Mass in my ten years. I had no idea what to do at a
First United Methodist service. I was just hoping I wouldn't mess up too
bad.
We arrived at the church and filed in and found a pew to sit in. 'Not
much different from my church' I thought. Everyone had seemed friendly,
the ladies smiled at us. Mrs. Jones said, "Hi" to the minister and
introduced us as out of town guests. The rest of the service went along
just fine. The only difference I noticed was a lot less sitting,
standing, kneeling and knowing when to do it!
"You were all so well behaved at church today! I'm very proud of all
three of you," Mrs. Jones said.
"Thank you. It was a nice service," I replied, "I had never been to any
church besides a catholic one before. This was nice!"
"Glad you liked it Lisa," Donna said.
We got back into the car and Mr. Jones drove off toward our next
destination. I was looking out the window thinking of all we had done so
far this weekend when Donna asked.
"Where are we going?"
"You'll see. Just relax and enjoy the ride," Mr. Jones said with a smile.
We drove for another twenty minutes and then pulled into a parking lot of
a restaurant.
"Isn't this Grandma's favorite place for Sunday brunch?" Donna asked.
"Yep! And we got here just in time too!" Mrs. Jones replied as a blue car
pulled up and parked next to us. It was Donna's Grandma and she was
smiling and waving as we all got out of the car. Donna got hugged twice!
After Janet and I were introduced, we made our way into the restaurant
for brunch.
I had never been in a place that had so many things for a meal. There
must have been six tables loaded with all kinds of things to eat. If I
hadn't had breakfast before church, there was even a chef, to make eggs,
omelets, or waffles if you wanted them! The lunch part was just as big
and there was another chef carving this huge piece of meat when somebody
asked him to.
I excused myself to use the restroom and Janet and Donna came with me.
After we were alone I said "I have never seen that much food in one place
before!"
"Oh! My grandmother really likes this place. It's her special treat for
birthdays for me. I like it too so it's okay to come here," Donna told
me, "Just eat what you want. I don't think I have tried everything they
have here yet!"
"Mom and Dad brought me here once for Sunday brunch. I think I'll have an
omelet," Janet said.
We finished up in the bathroom and redid our lipstick, then headed back
to the table. I wanted to look my best, even though I knew I would have
to redo my lips after I ate.
Brunch went okay. We talked about the weekend and all the fun we had. I
was talking to Donna and Janet about school tomorrow and became a little
sad.
"Lisa? Are you okay?" Donna asked.
"Yea. I was just sad that this Easter break was ending tonight and we all
go back to school tomorrow. I really enjoyed the weekend, I just don't
want tomorrow to come," I replied.
"I know what you mean," Janet said. "We all change back into our guy
selves to go back to school. Wish I didn't have to, I really like being
Janet."
We all sat quietly for a little while and just ate in peace and
thoughtfulness.
"Well, we're girlfriends for today!" said Donna Anne, "And I am going to
enjoy today for as long as I can!"
"Yea!" Both Janet and said at the same time. That got us giggling again
and we were off chatting about everything that was coming up at school
and for the coming summer.
We finished dinner, just before we left the restaurant, Mrs. Jones
suggested we girls 'powder our noses' before the trip home. I think we
looked like a mother duck and her ducklings when I think about it. Mrs.
Jones followed by three little girls all headed for the bathroom.
The trip back to Donna Anne's was fine and when we arrived, Donna, Janet
and I went back to Donna's room, played with her dolls, and listened to
music for a while. We didn't want to do much but just hang out. Saturday
had been such a busy day for us.
We were sitting there checking out all the information that came with the
cabbage patch doll, 'Karri', when my sister burst into the room.
"Hi! We came to get Lisa! Did you have a good time? Hi Donna. Hi Janet.
What did you do? Did you go a lot of places? I had a slumber party too!
We ate popcorn and played games and set our hair, Mom even helped us all
do our nails. See? So tell me already how was the weekend?" Janet said in
what seemed to be one breath!
"Hi Janet. Yes we had a good time. We went to a salon and had a day of
pampering. Then went to 'Chucky Cheese's for lunch, then out to the new
'James Bond' movie and then to dinner. Today we went to church and had
brunch with Donna's Grandma," I replied to Janet's questions. "How was
your slumber party?"
"It was okay. We didn't go anywhere but, Mom allowed us to make homemade
pizza!" Janet said with a frown.
"Cool! You mean you got to make your own pizza?" Donna asked. "We didn't
get to do anything like that!"
"Huh? What? You mean...I thought going..., I guess... Yea! It is pretty
cool that we got to make our own pizza!" Janet replied after stuttering
around for a few minutes.
"Really. What kind of toppings did you put on it? Was it good? Isn't it
neat to make your own special pizza?" Donna asked.
"Yea, one was just cheese, for Judy. One had pepperoni and ground beef
and peppers. We all liked that one. Mom made one; she called it 'surprise
pizza'. I'm not sure what was in it, I think all vegetables." Janet
chattered on.
"Probably the surprise was there wasn't any meat in it!" Janet Grant said
with a laugh.
That got us all to giggle and brought my sister, Janet, out of her sad
mood.
We were able to tell her about our day at the salon, the games at the
pizza place and how we rolled our hair to get our 'Charlie's Angels'
look.
"I learned how to do it without the curling iron! We won't burn ourselves
now," I told my sister.
"Really? Neat! Can you show me tonight?" Janet asked. She looked at the
three of us and a look of surprise came over her face. "All three of you
look like 'Charlie's Angels'!
We laughed and then struck our pose. Just like on TV!
We continued showing off Donna's presents and telling my sister, Janet,
all about our evenings of masks, makeup and rollers. Also, Donna and
Janet told her I snored! I couldn't believe they told my sister I snored!
"I do NOT!" I yelled.
"Yes! You do! Not real loud like the 'Three Stooges' or anything, but you
do snore a little," replied Janet Grant.
"It's okay. She snores at home too," said my sister with a smile.
I just crossed my arms and pouted. After a little giggling my sister came
over and gave me a hug.
"Do I really snore?" I asked.
"Yea! But Mom says I do sometimes too. It never stopped me from sleeping
by you though," Janet replied.
After that, we chatted about all the other things that happened that
weekend both here at Donna Anne's and back at my sister's slumber party.
All too soon, there were Moms at the door.
"Alright girls! Time for Lisa and my Janet to leave. We have a two hour
drive to get home and I think your father would like some dinner
tonight!" Mom said, as she and Mrs. Jones walked into the room.
"Lisa, it was lovely having you as a guest this weekend. I do hope you
can come visit again," Mrs. Jones said.
"Yea! I'd like that too!" stated Donna and Janet together.
"You owe ME a Coke!" said Donna quickly.
"NOW! She figures it out!" Exclaimed Janet Lynn.
The three of us laughed as Donna and both Janet's helped me carry my
cases and bag to the car.
"Oh! Lisa? I almost forgot! ... Donna come with me...Hurry!" stated Mrs.
Jones as she hurried into the house.
A moment later Donna came back out carrying a bag. "This is for you! It's
the rest of the makeup Mom told you about and a little 'Thank You' for
coming over this weekend." Donna handed me the bag and then gave me a
hug.
Janet Lynn came over and we hugged too. "It was nice to meet you! Maybe
we could do this again sometime!" She said brightly.
Mom, my sister and I got into the car and we all waved as Mom drove
towards home. I had decided to sit up front with Mom. Janet was already
asleep in the back seat as we turned onto the interstate.
"Did you have a good time?" She asked while driving
"Yea, I did. It was a lot of fun; we did things as girlfriends that I
could never do with a group of boys; but we also did a lot of things that
were the same as if we were boys. I think other than the pampering in the
salon and the rolling our hair at night it wasn't all that different from
other 'sleepover' parties," I told Mom.
"So what do you think about being Lisa now?" Mom asked.
I sat there and thought about it for awhile... I didn't want to give a
real quick answer, but I wanted it to be an honest evaluation of how I
felt right now.
"I think I like Lisa. I don't believe I want to be Lisa full time. I
thought I did back at Christmas, you know? Since then, you and dad have
let me see what being Lisa is all about. And that is a good thing. But I
like being John too! I don't want to give up either one, yet I can't be
both at the same time. I know I am both, but I don't feel that way. When
I'm dressed as John, I feel like John. When I'm Lisa, I just feel
special. I think it's like getting ready for a play. Like at school? You
put on a costume and then play a part. Only here I have a much larger
stage. And it was a lot scarier the first time I went out! But now I'm
very comfortable being whoever I'm dressed as. But I would like to be
Lisa again," I told Mom.
Thinking about being Lisa was something I had done on and off over the
weekend. Even Janet Lynn had thought about it too. I knew I didn't want
to give up Lisa, but I didn't want to be a girl all the time. This was
very confusing to me.
Mom let me sit there and think in silence for the next few minutes." You
know, when we get home we still have to fix dinner. You can stay Lisa
until tomorrow morning if you like," Mom finally said, breaking the
silence.
"Okay. I would like that Mom. There are a lot of things I promised to
show Janet too! Like all the makeup I received and how to roll her hair
so she doesn't need to use a curling iron," I replied. I got a little
excited about this evening. I would get to show Janet how to use makeup
and how to roll her hair. This 'Big Sister' thing could be pretty neat.
The rest of the trip was just Mom and I talking about the weekend and how
I enjoy
