Genies Just Wanna Have Fun

As in all the stories, Jim was startled when the lamp erupted after he
rubbed it. The dense smoke coalesced into a scantily clad woman who
looked decidedly Arabic.
"Greetings, Master," she said. "I am the genie of the lamp. You have
three wishes. How may I serve you?"
"Wow! Why only three wishes?" Jim asked.
"Do you wish to know the answer to that question, Master?" the genie
asked.
Jim quickly realized that he could waste his wishes on trivial questions if
he was not careful. He would have to consider his wishes and be very
careful about the wording or risk wasting them or suffering horrible
consequences.
Well, his first wish would be easy. He knew what he wanted because it
was an obsession that had dominated his life ever since puberty. He
wanted to be female. But he did not want to turn into a girl and then have
to try to explain to the rest of the world what happened to him and who he
was. Even if he could convince everybody who he was (or had been), he
did not want to have to deal with his friends and family who would ask
why he wished to become a girl.
After he became a girl, he could use the rest of his wishes to gain great
wealth and property. It was important to make the girl-wish first, in case
his new female perspective suggested modifications or variations in
wishes two and three.
"I wish to become an attractive woman, of the age I am now, and I want
everybody to think I have always been female," Jim said.
"Your wish is my command," the genie said. She twitched her nose or
pulled her earlobe or blinked her eyes or gestured mysteriously or did
whatever it is that genies do when they invoke their magic.
*Poof!*
"Greetings, Mistress," the genie said. "You have two wishes. How may I
serve you?"
"What?" Jane asked. "Why only two wishes?"
The genie knew Jane would not remember Jim's wish to become female,
since everybody (including Jane) believed she had always been female.
"Do you wish to know the answer to that question, Mistress?" asked the
genie.
Jane quickly realized that she had almost wasted a wish. She needed to be
very careful, lest she blow this opportunity. And she knew exactly what
she wanted, a wish she had been making all her life.
"I wish to become a good-looking man, of the age I am now, and I want
everybody to think I have always been male," Jane said.
"Your wish is my command," the genie said. Again, she did whatever
genies do.
*Poof!*
"Greetings, Master," the genie said. "You have one wish. How may I
serve you?"
"What! Why only one wish?" Jim asked.
"Do you wish to know the answer to that question, Master?" the genie
asked, smiling. This was the fun in being a genie. Somehow these silly
mortals never quite got it. They don't realize that when they wished for
everybody to believe they have always been female, they were included.
It was always amusing to see them waste valuable wishes, no matter how
clever they thought they were. This was the reason genies always offered
three wishes. Two wishes would only cancel each other out. It's much
more fun this way.
"Uh, no," Jim said. He suddenly realized that he almost wasted his only
wish. He would have to be very careful about how he worded it, lest he
lose this unique opportunity. And he knew exactly what he wanted. "I
wish?"
