Jeremy was what most people would call a nerd, or a dork, or a geek... pretty much any insulting label one could stick to a young man whose main interests were video games, anime, comic books and all sorts of other similar hobbies. It was a label that made him quite unpopular. Was he hated? Not particularly. Sure sometimes a jock or someone else higher on the social ladder would call him a dweeb but mostly they just ignored him. After all, Jeremy was quiet and kept to himself, never giving anybody much of a reason to target him for bullying. Sure, a few other geek "friends" (though, with the exception of Ryan, he mainly only talked to them in school) of his were, at times, made examples of by the more testosterone-driven meatheads but Jeremy was good at not being quite as overt with his nerdiness. Still, he wasn't popular. He had no real friends. He had no girlfriend. Hell, he didn't even have his own car. Instead he had to rely on driving his parents' minivan if he wanted to go anywhere... which was rarely. He didn't even have his part-time job anymore. Yeah, he hated working in fast-food but money was money. Thankfully he had at least been wise about frivolously spending what he made so he had a decent amount saved up. And he had the box. He had found it two days ago while walking the block from the bus stop to his house. It was strange thing to find, completely gray and despite it's appearance, very lightweight. However, it didn't seem to do much of anything. It was just a gray metal box that sat on his desk... like an overgrown paperweight. Jeremy sat down at his desk, picking the box up and examining it. He had, ever since he found it, examined it to see if, perhaps, he could open it. So far he had no luck but he DID have free time. This time, he thought, he might actually be able to figure this thing out. And that's when something caught his eye. "What's this?" He noticed weird writing, writing that had somehow passed him by the previous times. Writing that he didn't understand. Writing that looked like a made-up alien language from some sci-fi show or movie. As he looked at it, trying to make sense of it, he ran his hand over the writing... and that's when it started glowing and emitting a dull, low hum. In shock, the box fell out of Jeremy's hand, dropping to the floor. What happened next surprised him even more. The box began to expand! It grew taller and wider, expanding to a size far greater than the small box it had originally been. How it was doing this, Jeremy didn't have a clue, though it soon stopped. Where there once was a small, metal cube there now stood a large, metal... thing. Jeremy wasn't sure WHAT it was, although it looked to be about the size of a telephone booth. Looking at it, he noticed that it really did seem to be a larger version of the box; gray and featureless. That was, until he got to the fourth side anyway. On that side, there appeared to be a purple crystal and a red pad with some kind of weird handprint and above the pad, a black screen. "I wonder what this is for?" he said to himself. Reaching out, he placed his hand onto the red pad and was shocked to see what appeared to be more of the alien language scroll across the screen. Eventually it stopped, however, and was replaced by an image of a slightly overweight 16-year- old boy... it was himself. More importantly, though, Jeremy was worried about what his parents were going think. Especially his mom. She could be nosy at times and that nosiness could lead to nagging and if, after getting home from work, she discovered a large gray box in his room, he'd be getting an earful. As he thought, the image changed again, with himself being replaced with an image of his mom. "What the hell?" he asked himself, "It was just me a second ago and now it's showing my mom? I don't get--unless..." Jeremy thought and the image on the screen changed, once more becoming a duplicate of himself. He then thought of his mother again, and then his father and then his older sister, Jenny. "This is kind of cool," he stated, "But there has to be more to it than this." That's when he looked at the purple knob. With a shrug that said "Why not?" he reached out and touched it. To his surprise the side began to disappear, creating an opening that led inside the booth. Stepping inside, he looked around and found another purple, knob-shaped crystal. He touched it again and, for a couple of seconds, feeling washed over him, kind of like butterflies in his stomach. It went almost as quickly as it came, though, and the other side of the booth opened. As he stepped out, Jeremy knew something was definitely wrong. He felt a little taller, he could see brown hair on his shoulders, he was skinnier, he had breasts... he had a woman's body! He managed to bring up an image of himself and within a minute, he was stepping out of the booth once more, back to his normal appearance. And just in time, too, as he heard the front door close. Jeremy gave another quick glance at the machine. It was incredible! If it could change him back and forth from his sister to himself, it could probably change him into anybody he desired. He would definitely have to experiment with it some more when he had the chance. ******* It was the late morning and Jenny Campbell stood in her room stark naked. Still, he'd think of a way around the transportation problem when it came up. For now, though, he'd get back to testing it out. Deciding to see just what the limit was on who the machine could change him into, he thought up an image for the machine and then quickly stepped into the booth. "Holy crap!" Ryan, his brain not really doing the thinking at this point, nodded and followed her upstairs into Jeremy's room. After entering, she shut the door behind him. As she walked by him, she gave him a wink and then stepped over to what appeared to be a large, gray phone booth. She pressed her hand onto a red pad and then touched a purple knob. To Ryan's surprise, the side disappeared and she stepped inside. A few seconds later, the opening closed up and in another few seconds, the other side opened and out stepped... Jeremy?! "So how does that thing work?" he asked. "I'll let you try it out," Jeremy said, walking over to the machine and placing his hand on the pad. "You place your hand on the pad here, then just think of someone." Ryan came over and was about to move to the pad before Jeremy shooed him away. "It's a demonstration so I kinda figured I should pick," he explained, leaving Ryan a bit annoyed. "Alright, so go and place your hand on the purple crystal on the side there," he continued. "So what now?" Ryan asked, stepping into the machine after the side disappeared. "There should be another crystal somewhere in there," Jeremy said, "touch it and everything should be done in a couple of seconds." Ryan looked around and saw the crystal, placing his hand on it. In a few seconds, he stepped out of booth. "Wha-Who am I?" he asked in his new higher-pitched voice. Jeremy exited the room and went to the bathroom, motioning for Ryan to follow him. Ryan did so and looking in the mirror, was shocked to see another Emily Liu staring back. The only difference being that this one was clothed in a short-sleeved, striped polo shirt and jeans as opposed to the practically nothing Jeremy was wearing. "Why'd you do this?" asked Ryan a little incredulously. "I figured you'd get a kick out of it," Jeremy stated. "C'mon, lighten up a little, will you?" "You're one to talk about that," Ryan shot back. "What's with you, anyway? You've been acting really weird ever since you called me." "It's that machine," Jeremy explained, "it's like... I was miserable before but with that I can become anybody. I don't HAVE to be nerdy, unpopular Jeremy. I can be someone like Kristi Turner or a celebrity." With that, his expression grew a little more serious. "I can be popular. I don't have to be a loser anymore. WE don't have to be losers anymore," he added looking up. "I see what you're saying, yeah," Ryan said, "it's just such a complete 180, that's all. But hey, if it cheers you up, then whatever man." After a moment he chuckled slightly. "This is so weird. I'm Emily and I'm having a conversation with Emily only it's really you. People would think we were twin sisters or something if they saw us." "That's actually partly why I called you," said Jeremy, his expression brightening. "I kind of wanted to test this out. In public. See how well I could pass as someone else," he paused for a second before continuing, "Only problem is my mom's working late tonight and dad's always late anyway so I don't have a car to get anywhere." "So I'm gonna act as your chauffeur, is that it?" asked Ryan. "Well sorta, yeah," Jeremy admitted, "although I was thinking that we could go out in disguise together. Have a little fun, you know?" Ryan placed his hand on his chin in a thoughtful expression. "That WOULD be fun. The only problem is... two Emilys? And what if the REAL one is at the mall, too?" "So we change ourselves," Jeremy shrugged, "I mean, that IS what that thing does." "Well sure," said Ryan nodding, "but into WHO? I'd assume that someone like Kristi or Sandra would be at the mall anyway. And I don't think going as some celebrity would be 'inconspicuous'." Jeremy just grinned. "Well see, funny thing about that. The booth's not just limited to REAL people." ******* "Alright, this is definitely weird," Ryan stated as Jeremy and him walked through the mall. He could always make out a couple of people stopping to look at them every time they walked by. With his blonde hair tied back in a long ponytail (and two long bangs in the front) and a light green, sleeveless shirt and black skirt showing off his figure, Jeremy was definitely turning heads. "Yeah, I know," Ryan replied, running a hand through his slightly unkempt short black hair. "But we've never done this before. It's just such a strange feeling." For his part Jeremy was basking in the attention he was receiving. The character who's shape he had taken was definitely attractive, there was no doubting that. Especially when a couple of guys came up and tried to flirt with them in the food court... well, mainly Jeremy. While he would've rather had a chance to try and get to know some of the girls from school a little more, he didn't seem too fazed by the male attention. By the time they got back to Jeremy's it was around 7:30 and there was still nobody home. Deciding to call it a day, they changed back into themselves. And not a moment too soon, either, as Jeremy's mother arrived home from work not long after they changed back. Tomorrow was Friday, anyway, and seeing as this week was a three day weekend, they'd have plenty of time to have fun with it. ******* Unfortunately Friday came and the booth went unused. Jeremy's parents had decided to go to a family gathering at his uncle's house the next town over. His parents insisted that he come and so Jeremy had to call up Ryan and cancel plans for the day. Jeremy's parents wanted to stay the weekend but Jeremy managed to at least convince them to take him home so they could have a little adults-only vacation. Given that it was only about an hour's drive, it wasn't a particularly hard sell. By the time he got back home, it was around 9:00 at night and he was more tired than usual. The most he could do was a few quick "sessions" as a couple of girls. Saturday, though, was open and the boys made the most of it. Jeremy and Ryan went out to grab some fast food as Jenny and Kristi, respectively. Although Ryan thought it was a bit odd for Jeremy to go as his sister, Jeremy said it was something he was comfortable in. Ryan was also bit more comfortable going out this time too and Jeremy, true to form, continued to bask in the attention that they received. "It was, wasn't it?" Jeremy asked. "But it was kind of exciting. It was sort of like we were doing something, I dunno, bad? It was a bit of an adrenalin rush." "You're weird," Ryan said, shaking his head. "Alright, so what should we do now?" "How about we show ourselves off at the beach?" Jeremy replied. He knew that deep down, he should probably be a little weirded out by the guys but at this point, he rationalized, he didn't care WHO he was getting attention from. Ryan, meanwhile, had mostly stuck to messing around in the water, enjoying the feel of it against his smooth skin. After a while, though, he went over to where Jeremy was and laid down on the towel beside him. "This was actually a really good idea, you know that?" he said, turning to his friend. "It's Andrew Cooper," replied Ryan, referring to one of the members of the basketball team. "I'd figure that at EVERY party there's gonna be people there who have never been to one. So what's the big deal, then, if 'Emily' shows up?" "I guess you're right," sighed Ryan. Jeremy placed an arm around his friend's shoulders and smiled. "Look, we go there, have some fun, change back in the morning. My parents are still gonna be out of town so don't worry about getting caught by them or anything." "Alright, fine," Ryan said, finally relenting. ******* Jeremy and Ryan showed up at the party around 7:00, having gone back to Jeremy's to use the booth to "change" into actual clothes. Though due to not really wanting to think about it, they just went with what they were wearing the first time they took these forms. "Emily!" The name was slurred by an already inebriated Jake Larson. "Oh, nice, who's this? I ain't ever seen ya around here?" he asked Jeremy. "I'm Emily's friend. I'm, uh, new here," Jeremy replied. "Man, yeah, I figured," Jake continued to slur, "'cause, like, I would've remembered a FIIIINE ass girl like you." "Uh, thanks," Jeremy said as he and Ryan pushed their way into Andrew's house. "I'm not sure about this," Ryan said, still feeling a little skeptical. "I don't know if I'm gonna fit in." "Relax," Jeremy said, smiling, "find a beer or something, mingle. Don't worry about it." "Yeah, but I don't drink," Ryan protested. "Then don't have any, I dunno," Jeremy replied, "speaking of mingling, I'm gonna go do just that. I'll catch up with you." "Yeah, but..." By the time the words had left Ryan's mouth, however, Jeremy had already disappeared into the crowd. "Dammit." ******* A little after 11:00, the party was dying off and there weren't too many people left. and Ryan, he had to admit, had been enjoying himself. He eventually decided to take Jeremy's advice, although he had only drank enough to give himself a slight buzz, and found that most of the other people there were alright. He had even danced in a couple of crowds and was generally enjoying the atmosphere. As he walked to the kitchen, however, something caught his eye. Off to the side, a little, away from most of the other people that were still left was a girl: a petite Asian girl with short hair and glasses, wearing midriff exposing yellow shirt with a jacket over it and a pair of jeans. It was Emily! Crap! What was she doing here? He knew he shouldn't have listened to Jeremy. He knew shouldn't have come. Now he had to get away before--too late. He noticed her looking at him, a look of astonishment on her face. He was caught. The only thing he could do now was go over to her and try and head things off. "Emily, hi," he said, sheepishly approaching her. "I don't. I mean-" Emily stuttered, completely in shock. "Who are you? Wh-Why do you look like me?" Ryan just sighed. "It's... a long story. "Uh huh," Emily said, nodding, "So what's really going on? You expect me to believe a story about alien changing booths or whatever?" "Well, can you think of another reason you're talking to another person who looks exactly like you?" Ryan shot back. "I--" "Look, believe it if you want but it's the truth," Ryan said sighing. "Okay, fine. I guess I don't really have another reason as to why this would be happen," Emily stated, unfolding her arms. "So then why don't you just change back?" "I have to find my friend," Ryan replied, looking around.
