Previously on MAU - Slayers...
The Slayers were transferred to the Agency's Head Office. Meanwhile
Dennis awoke from his coma and has agreed to help the man who is
plotting against the Slayers.
MAU - Slayers - Shadows Of Things That Will Be, As Seen By Bill
[Author's Note: I meant to have this uploaded before the holidays, but
was unable to. I hope the timing doesn't bother any reading of the
story.]
"There's no way out this time," Faith said. "Remember, I'm a lot
stronger than you."
"Believe me, I know," said Agent R. "I still have bruises from last
week."
"I told you I'm sorry about that. I didn't know my grip was that
strong. But why won't you tell me?"
"Because it would spoil the surprise, didn't you get any patience when
you got your Slayer powers?"
"Actually I lost what I had. Now I have patience of a gnat with the
strength of several men."
"A deadly combination."
"So you understand then?"
"Yes, but I'm still under telling you what I got you for Christmas."
"Come on."
"I can't."
"Don't make me beg, I'll do the puppy dog eyes."
"My one weakness."
"What about that one thing I do?"
"That too."
"Just tell me."
"You know I can't, besides it's Christmas Eve anyways. That's when your
family would give out gifts according to you. That means that you find
out tonight. So I've been meaning to ask, what did you get me?"
"Oh I'll never tell."
R rolled while holding her, he was now holding her down, "Think I could
make you?"
"Considering I could crush any part of your body with only my thighs, I
highly doubt it."
"Point taken," he rolled off her and rested next to her on the bed.
"I didn't say you had to move."
"I have to get ready for work anyways."
"Why so early?"
"Mainly paperwork, they usually like stuff like that wrapped up before
the holidays. Given that I'm taking tomorrow off for Christmas, I'd
like to be completely done. That way I don't get a call in the middle
of anything."
"Shame you have to leave this nice warm bed."
"I'll be back. Don't you have work too?"
"Yeah, but not for a few hours."
"I'll see you then," R said as he climbed out of bed.
As he got dressed, Faith finally got up. She grabbed her clothes, "I
better get back to my apartment." She kissed him on the cheek and got
dressed.

"Damn it's cold here," Buffy said as she walked into the office.
"Think I don't know that," said Faith as she followed her. "I hate this
state, they have actual winter here. Not like having to wear a jacket
for a few weeks back home."
"At least there is snow, we've seen snow like three times before."
"Snow is nice, I don't like walking through it though."
"You're no fun at all."
"I'm fun, I just like to be able to feel my toes."
The two continued talking before being interrupted by Arthur, a
scientist who worked for the Agency. He walked into the office, "Hi you
two, look we need to talk for a moment."
"Sure, what's going on," Buffy said.
"There is someone who really wants to see you. I can explain on the
way."

As Arthur drove he explained, "You know how you two have some low level
psychic abilities? The prophetic dreams, the ability to communicate
with each other while dreaming in some cases?"
"Yeah," Faith replied from the back seat.
"Well we have someone a little better than that. He made himself a very
powerful psychic. Way beyond any other that we've found. But it seems
to be a stream of consciousness thing, he is constantly seeing visions.
Most of the time he is just telling us random events that are going to
happen to complete strangers. A good bit of it sounds like nonsense."
"Oh, like the Hybrids on Battlestar Galactica?" Buffy asked.
Arthur's face lit up, "Exactly. You're a fan of the show?"
"Yeah, it was great."
"Can you two stop geek bonding for a moment? I would like to hear the
end of this," Faith said.
"Of course, where was I? From the few times we was able to speak to us,
unless he is able to focus on an event or a person it would be like
trying to pick out individual conversations in a crowded room. It
doesn't hurt him, whoever designed the devices put a bunch of safeguards
to keep someone from hurting themselves. But he is now on a completely
different level of thinking than we are used to. He can barely survive
on his own because of the constant flow of visions, so he is pretty much
bedridden now. Most of the time he is just yelling out what he sees
like he is lost in them. But recently, he has become completely focused
on the two of you."
"How does he know about us?" Faith asked.
"He just focused on you somehow. I don't think even he fully
understands how it works. One day we starting sensing the two of you.
We have pages of transcripts on what I assumed to be the two of you,
although most of it is being repeated a lot. I emailed some to R while
Faith was missing. As time went on, he became more and more coherent."
"Why do you even need us then?" Buffy asked.
"Because he is demanding to see you. Apparently it is very important
that he see you soon and I'm not eager to tamper with time."
"So what do we do?" Buffy asked.
"Just talk to him, he'll be expecting you."

"Come in, come in," he said. He was an older man, probably in his late
50s. "I've been waiting for this for a long time."
"So how does this work? Do you already know what we're going to ask?"
Buffy asked.
"Not really, some things are vague and others are in detail. I knew
that you would come see at this point, but not what we discuss.
Sometimes I know exactly what is going to be said, but not with who.
Time is odd, it flows like a river. Some events will always happen,
others can change. Like placing a stone in the water, the river still
flows although somewhat differently," the man said.
"So do you have a name?" Faith asked.
"Bill."
"Just Bill? Not the Seer or the Prophet or something cool like that,"
Faith said.
"No, just Bill. Although I can no longer remember my real last name.
The human mind can only hold so much. I probably should have enhanced
that as well, but hindsight is 20/20. Although for me so is foresight."
"So why now? What's so important about this point in time?" Buffy
asked.
"Because one month from now, I will be dead. I do not fear it, not
knowing what happens to me afterward is intriguing. I know so much and
would like very much to see this. But I must warn the both of you about
your immediate future. That is something that can be changed."
"So what happens?" Faith asked as she found a chair to sit on.
"There is a storm coming. I see darkness coming for you Faith. You
must resist your urge when you see it. Your path is at a crossroads,
you can either go forward towards your destiny or get lost in a dark
forest."
"So what is my destiny?"
"That would be spoiling it, you will know as soon as you see what it is
for the first time. I believe that deep down you already know, although
you keep pushing it away." Bill looked to Buffy, "You must help her.
Only together will you both survive what is to come. The darkness has
plans for you as well, although it is less clear. You will know when
the time is right Buffy, it must be done. Do it for Faith and for your
own future."
"So after this, our lives are sunshine and lollipops right?" Buffy
asked.
"No, your lives will be difficult. Just like all the lives of those
touched by the makers of the devices. But happiness is not an
impossibility. Just stay together, world will depend on this."
"Okay, I do hate to sound like I have a big ego. But are you saying
that we are going to save the world at some point?" Faith asked.
"Both of you are needed in what is to come. Together with those around
you and with another you have yet to meet."
"Do you mean her?" Faith asked.
"Spoilers."
"Come on, you have to tell me more," Faith said.
"I do not speak of the one you think. There will be another, one you
will know as soon as you see her. But you will meet the one that you
speak of one day. But she must continue down her path before this can
happen. I cannot say when though. But the time will come."
"Wow, so I assume that this is the stuff that is set in stone," Faith
said.
"No, it may all change. But the flow of time does seem to be heading to
it and I no longer believe it to be avoidable. That is why you must be
prepared for this. For your own safety and for the safety of us all.
Now you must go, I wish I could tell you more. But by knowing
everything there is a risk of damaging the timeline. I risk it already
with what I already told you, but I needed for you to know some of what
is to happen. Good luck to you both."
The Slayers left the room and Arthur drove them back to the Head Office,
they walked back to their office and sat down.
"So, that was heavy," Faith said.
"I always thought the whole 'there is a storm coming' was a stupid
clich?, but not when it involves yourself. Then it is just scary,"
Buffy replied.
"So you want to place bets on who saves the world?"
"Maybe people turned themselves into real superheroes. Superman or
someone else."
"That would be cool, depending on which movie they picked I'd love to
meet Batman."
"Only because you thought Christian Bale was hot."
"He is and I can't help that. That man just does something to me."
"What would R think?"
"He knows I like Batman."
"So what fictional character does he get?"
"Sarah Conner, he really has a thing for her. Also any character Summer
Glau has ever played."
"A thing for action girls, huh?"
"I guess so, the only argument we ever had was about stuff like that. I
think it was about who was the better Sarah, the movie one or the
television one. It went on for about a hour. He's a weird geek, but so
am I."
"So what did you think about the whole thing with Bill? Because I have
to admit I'm terrified."
"Well we have to make it out okay on some level. We just have to stick
together."
"I'm just worried we will change something by knowing about it. I've
seen enough science fiction to know that you don't tamper with this
stuff."
"Calm down Doc Brown," Faith chuckled at her rhyme. "He didn't say to
avoid some event, that we absolutely had to be at. Just stick together
really. Also that we meet somebody and save the world somehow. It was
annoyingly vague, probably because of some wibbly-wobbly, timey-wimey
reason. Like by avoiding something, we set up why we have to be there."
"At least we aren't going back in time and meeting our parents, then
somehow erasing ourselves from history. That would be awkward."
"I do not want the mental picture of myself in some sort of Marty McFly
situation."
"You know we should have asked him about time travel rules. I want to
know if we could change the past."
"How would he know that? He's psychic, not a Time Lord. Although he
did say that time was like a river. That even if you did things
differently, things would still be basically the same in the long run.
I guess we all have some sort of fate, but how we get there can change."
"Came up with that all by yourself?"
"Pretty much, some of it came from some website explaining the time
travel in the Terminator movies. I think it sounds good"
"Maybe a little, I prefer no fate but what we make."
"We could always split up and let the world end."
"We'd have nothing to do afterward though."
"Good point, better to be big damn heroes then."
R walked by and stuck his head into the room, "Ready to go Faith?"
"Sure, I'll catch you later B."

"So Arthur told me about your meeting with Bill," R said as they got
into his car. "What did he say?"
"Not much really, it was all vague. B and me will help the save the
world at some point I guess. Also there is a storm coming and we have
to stick together," Faith as R started to drive.
"Aren't you worried?"
"Maybe a little. I mean I have to survive, so that doesn't bother me.
I'm more worried about you. What if something were to happen? From
what I heard, this guy is legit and he didn't say a single thing about
you."
"I'll be fine, you're a lot stronger than me remember. You can always
protect me."
"Damn straight. I'd slay anyone who lays a finger on my man."
"That's my girl."
The two soon arrived at R's apartment. Faith plopped on the couch, "So
are you going to tell me now?"
"About the present?"
"Of course, why do you think I even came here?"
"I thought it was my charming personality."
"Silly boy. You know I'm only here for presents. I stay because of
your personality."
"Well here it is," he handed a small box to her. "Now where is mine?"
"Right here," she said as she pulled a box out of her bag and handed it
to him.
He tore into the paper and removed a book, "It's the Hitchhiker's Guide
to the Galaxy, but I already have a copy of it."
"Look inside."
He flipped open the cover and saw that it was signed by the author, "How
did you get this? He died a few years back."
"I found it online."
"Thanks, aren't you going to open your gift?"
"Yeah," she opened the box and found a ring.
"Nothing serious, I just thought you could use one. I never see you
wear jewelry."
"I love it," she slid it onto her finger. "See, it fits."
"I'm glad you like it."
She slid up beside him, "So you've never told me about your family's
traditions or anything like that. You know that mine would open gifts
on Christmas Eve."
"We usually waited until Christmas Day. Gifts and then dinner, turkey
and all of that."
"Then you are a lucky man, I'm cooking a turkey for you."
"When did you learn to cook anything more complicated than eggs?"
"B taught me a few things. Given all the instructions I've found, I
don't think I can screw it up that bad. All else fails, I can warm a
decent frozen pizza."

A few hours later the Slayers sat in Faith's apartment.
"So B, I was just thinking that this is our first Christmas like this.
Not so much the whole change thing, but without our families."
"I was too, I just didn't want to bring it up."
"I has been a rough couple of months. We lost our bodies, got drafted
into killing monsters, lost our families, and I was mind raped for a
while. Now we live a life that could get us killed on any random day.
Add to that the rosy future Bill painted for us."
"You at least got a boyfriend out of the situation."
"I saw the way you looked at Arthur when he mentioned BSG. I've never
seen your eyes light up like that."
"Come on now, you're the one who fell for the first guy of similar age
she saw. Plus you had barely been a girl for a day."
"Excuse me, I'm in the body of sex crazed teenager. You know how Faith
is on the show, imagine that everyday."
"Does R help any?"
Faith turned red, "Yes."
"You lucky bitch, why do you get all the fun?"
Faith laughed, followed by Buffy.
Faith stopped after a moment, "Do you think they would be proud of me?
My parents I mean. I know they didn't ever expect me to become a super
powered girl who fights monsters. I don't even have the same name or
DNA as them. I'd be a complete stranger to them."
"They only want you to be happy. You still have memories and traditions
from them, you can carry that on."
"How? Having a kid? I'd be a terrible mother."
"Why the hell would you think that?"
"Horribly dangerous career for one thing. Also I couldn't even keep
goldfish, there is no way I'd be responsible enough for a kid. Besides
there is the whole 'Faith' part of me. Who knows what that would do to
a kid."
"Come on, you can't really think that. I've told you countless times
that Faith doesn't control you. You just look like her and may have
picked up a few of a her quirks. But you've never turned evil and tried
to kill me."
"I guess so."
"Still at least you could kick some serious ass if anyone ever insulted
your kid."
"Got that right. Still can you imagine my pregnant?" Faith said as she
started to laugh.
"I can see you leaping through the air, pregnant belly and all. I pity
any vamp or monster who dares to cross you raging with hormones."
Faith twisted the ring around her finger. "It would be something,
wouldn't it? Still I do wonder about them being proud of me."
"I think they would. You help people and you're happy, I know they
would be proud of you."
"You know, I don't think I would have lasted long without you helping me
and calling me on my bullshit."
"Well, somebody had to do it."
"I'm serious, I think I would have gone mad or even worse if I didn't
have you by my side. You're my best friend B. I really mean that."
Buffy put her arm around Faith. "Now here comes the Hallmark moment."
The two laughed.
