She would often sit beside me watching TV, with one paw on my leg as if to make sure I knew she was there. Well to continue, as I said, my cat and I had moved back into the trailer. We had been staying with friends who were blessed with a fireplace that actually worked. As I was carrying in some of the blankets through the door, Cherub slipped out between my legs and disappeared into the forest. I called fruitlessly for awhile and then proceeded to finish unloading the car. I then got some of her favorite treats and went into the woods trying to find her. I soon heard meowing sounds coming from a tangle of trees where the trunks had uprooted as well as having broken into pieces. Working carefully I moved several trunk pieces aside uncovering a hollow where one small tree had uprooted itself. Cherub was in the hollow digging at something that was half buried in the mud. I quickly grabbed her and took her into the house. Then I returned to the hole in the ground. Having read of pirates buried treasure and knowing the rich history in my area, I continued digging at the object in the dirt. I was quickly disappointed when all I uncovered was a silvery colored box that was way too light to hold any kind of treasure. I was intrigued though as to how it had gotten where it was and what it was made of. The tree that it had been buried under was what was called secondary growth and was about 30 to 35 years old. When I got back to the trailer I took the box into the bathroom and using the shower attachment I cleaned the mud off of it and then took it into the living room to examine it better. Five sides of it were totally blank but the sixth side had a reddish crystal on it. When I touched the crystal, it brightened and suddenly the box began to grow in size. It grew to be about four foot square when suddenly it shivered and then flipped over on one side so that the crystal was on the side instead of the top. It then expanded in width and depth by another foot and grew up till it was just touching the low ceiling of the trailer. At first I just looked at it in shock, this was something out of a sci-fi story and from all the stories that I had read I was expecting something more to happen, maybe even something dangerous. But after a few minutes of nothing, I started to examine the box. It was featureless on 3 of the sides, but on the side with the crystal there was now a black area like a screen and to one side was what looked for all the world like a dinosaur paw print about the size of a human hand. Below the screen was the aforementioned crystal. I tried touching the screen but nothing happened, then I touched the paw print. Suddenly a cursive script started scrolling across the screen from right to left and filling the screen at which time it started scrolling downward. I was startled but didn't stop touching the paw print as I was fascinated by what I was seeing. Suddenly the print stopped and the bottom row flashed 3 times before it disappeared and then as I watched I saw an image of my cat appear. It was perfect in every detail. I found that I could rotate the image and see her from every angle. The first time that I pulled my hand away from the print to look at the cat the picture froze, only by touching the print could I affect what was on the screen. I realized that this was a user interface that had computers beat all hollow. I wondered what else the screen had to offer, like did it have only a selection of images in it or did it catch the image of whatever touched it. With that thought in my mind the image of Cherub faded and an image of me took it's place. Now I told you that I am somewhat overweight, well my self-image of what that meant was shocked at what the screen showed me and I tried to deny it to myself, imagining that I was much slimmer than that. Suddenly the image slimmed down until I was very trim looking in the gut and I realized that I could modify the picture as well. I worked at filling in the bald spot on my head and firming up my body in all the right places until I had what I thought was a much better image of myself. I saw that I could fit into any Yuppie crowd and no one would notice the difference. As I thought my changes into the screen I found myself wondering exactly how the machine worked and what it's limitations were. After changing my shape in all the ways that I thought it could be improved, I stepped back and admired my image. I then touched the crystal below the screen thinking that maybe it would print out the image on the screen for me. Immediately the side of the box to the left of the screen disappeared, startling me so badly that I fell on the floor. When nothing happened, I got up and walked around and looked inside. I marveled at how thin the walls of the box were compared to how strong they were, I couldn't flex them at all. I then looked inside and noticed that except for a yellowish crystal in the ceiling and a red crystal that was a twin to the crystal on the outside the box was empty, no copies for me, maybe whatever had been in it had been taken out long ago. Still I touched the crystal on the roof then the one on the inside. Suddenly the wall reappeared and I was trapped inside the box. I panicked and hit the red crystal repeatedly, while barely aware that the overhead crystal had turned red and that I felt a tingle all through my body. Then the door reappeared and I plunged through it gratefully. It wasn't till I felt the chill on my body that I realized that I was naked and as I looked down I also realized that I could easily see my feet past my very trim and muscular and " FLAT " stomach. As I looked in shock at my now perfect buff body the information seeped into my conscious thought that I was the now the exact image as specified on the interface screen of the Morphic Adaptation Unit. My mind reeled with all the information on what powered the unit, how the metamorphosis was achieved and what were the limitations of this unit which was a Mark 5 in the series of portable units. I also realized that the printing on the screen was a user license that was presented when the unit was first activated. It stated that this unit was in Demo Mode of the normal MAU device and would after roughly four days deactivate itself unless money in the form of Fwirthi Rakburs (52,495 of them) were paid to the Gamalfi Corporation. It even included information as to where the Gamalfi Corporation Headquarters were on the planet of Fwirthi. I sat down as I thought through all the ramifications of the information that now filled my head. On a human being the modifications possible were vast and many. Every idea that popped into my head had a method of making it possible. I also realized that having used the Unit, it had stored a backup copy of the original me which also included all the knowledge in my mind as well. I realized that I could say, change a fat Chinese woman into the lovely creature of her dreams and then access that portion of her memories that dealt with her language and use it on myself. Voila, I would then know how to speak, read and write Chinese as if I had done it all of my life. I could do the same with any skill that a person had learned without having to take the time to do it myself. I could even imbue myself with that indefinable something that made the difference between being someone who merely put paint on a canvas and being a true artist and do it with any skill whatever. I had always hated having to shave, so I added the thought that I would be hairless other than the hair on my head, eyebrows, eyelashes and the small patch of pubic hair. Looking at my cat again, I thought about the tail. I made it long enough that I could curl the end of it around my neck. I made it furry with short thick hair along its length except at its tip where the hair grew about 3 times as long. I made the tail totally prehensile and under my direct control at all times. I would be able to make the end of the tail fluff out into a ball or lay flat at will. Finally I thought about clothes, I thought of a pair of thong panties with a little keyhole design in the front with a ribbon bow. They were white in color with the stitching in yellow and the ribbon in blue. Knowing that I had the power to realize a fantasy was warring with the fear that this was all a dream and that as I walked into the booth I would wake up clutching at myself with misery. On the other half of the device, which was detachable, the copy of whatever you were making would appear. It efficiently used the ambient heat in the area around it to power itself, in fact the hotter it was the better it worked. Focusing on the picture of me on the machine, I pictured the device in my arms looking like a laptop computer. I also thought of some jewelry, i.e. a small chain around my neck, double piercings in my ears and a gold watch on my left wrist. I pictured one of those biker wallets hooked to a chain hooked to the belt that went around my waist. In the wallet would be the changed license and a copy of the changed social security card with my old number on it. I also changed my body so that I didn't have the tail anymore and gave myself a knitted cap and a flannel jacket that came down to my knees and had snaps in the front. The cap and the coat were in muted colors that were designed to blend in and not get me noticed. Placing the unit on the kitchen table I went outside and got into my car. I had to reset all of the adjustments for the seat and mirrors. I pulled the seat forward almost all the way and raised it a bit as well. I drove up to the bank and got $60.00 dollars out of the ATM and then went to the store and bought some bread and sandwich fixings, making sure that I got a range of change. I went to the pet store and bought some of the good food things that my cat liked and got some more change. I went back home and put up the stuff I bought before sitting down and piled all of the coin change on the coffee table in the living room. At a local supermarket there was a machine there that you could pour coins into that you had collected and it would total it up for you and give you a voucher for. You could then turn this in for the cash value or use it to buy food in the store. You could also get a card issued to you with the value of the money accredited to it instead, like a secured credit card. I put $3.67 of change on the plate and angled the other plate so anything that appeared on it would then fall back onto the scanning plate. I then pushed the button a dozen times till I had about $45.00 of change piled there. At that point I tilted the receiving plate the other way so that everything would be funneled into a cloth money bag that I had bought at a novelty store. I had made a dozen copies of the bag earlier and now proceeded to fill them. I estimated that I had about 500 dollars in change in each bag. Realizing that people would get suspicious I would only be able to take 2 or 3 bags to the store at one time. But there were 5 stores in that chain in the area, so I didn't expect it would be too much of a problem. Afterwards, when I totaled up everything I found that I had a 11 credit cards with amounts ranging from 400 to 600 dollars on each one. I went to various stores and got membership cards . I figured these would help to set up an identity for myself. I stopped at the local women's only gym and got myself a membership there, I would need to keep myself in shape. I also went to the Post Office and got a big P.O. box and then went to the local library and got a membership there. I also went online there and looked in the online want ads for a used car. My head lay on pillows stuffed with chicken down and I was covered by a blanket of a material that didn't exist on earth but had been described in another one of my sci-fi books. I was wearing another fantastic garment that I dreamed up that was as thin as silk yet clung to me like a second skin. It was basically a gray color but would have a pearlescent shine to it in the sunlight. It looked like one of those old swimsuits from the 40's, being a one piece outfit that went from mid thigh to my neck. It was sleeveless and had a round collar like a T-shirt and it was heavenly to sleep in. My sleep that night was deep and dreamless. DAY 2 I opened my eyes and was awake just that quick, no longer it seemed was I to wake up slowly and gradually. I lay in bed for a few moments while everything that I had done yesterday ran through my mind. At the same time I sensed the feelings that were coming from my body. I had a full feeling in my bladder and an empty one in my stomach. I was aware of the emptiness between my thighs and the weight of my breasts, yet I was totally relaxed. I took a quick shower and then dried off using towels that were softer and fluffier than anything that I had ever been able to buy. When I stepped out I had what I had designed. Some assembly was required, but that was included in the making of the device. It basically came in 3 separate pieces that were interconnected, but not by wires. There was a large flat screen that could be operated either by touch or voice, a flat plate that was a rectangle 20 x 28 inches, and finally a box that fit under the counter. I could program any type of food into it by putting my hand on the screen and imagining what the food would look and taste like. The box contained the highly concentrated form of bio-organic slurry that could be changed by the replicator into any substance that I required. Using a device that was part laser and part saw, I cut away the interior of the bottom cupboard to custom fit the box under the counter and inset the plate (flush) into the formica top above it. I made several patterns of the plates, cups, and silverware that I liked most before recycling them. I recycled all the plates and silverware as well as the cooking items that I had since I would no longer need them. Down along the bottom third of the screen were two dozen rows of memory modules for the replicator which contained all the information needed to remake anything that was in their pattern matrix. I made myself a small plate of pancakes with scrambled eggs and a glass of orange juice. As I was eating my second breakfast, Cherub came in and started sniffing at my food. I got up and made her some cat food. Beef and seafood mixed with the Nine Lives crunchy stuff was her favorite. After we had both eaten, she came and curled up beside me while washing her paws. I realized then, that until I had gotten her, how lonely I had been. Other than the fact that she wasn't able to share my bed like another human being, she still filled an emotional void in my life. That is when the idea hit me. Occasionally I have had what they call an Epiphany. This time there was a sensation like a caroling of bells faintly heard and the idea sprung full blown into my head. I could turn Cherub into a human being and receive the full benefit of a relationship with someone like myself. I sat back and examined the idea from all sides. Having used the MAU, I knew that all living things had what we humans called a soul. But Cherub wasn't as complex an organism as I was, as far as mentally speaking. I recalled how the MAU stores my mental patterns and realized that I could design a body for her that would be as beautiful as my own and make it so that she would be as comfortable in it as I was in my own new body. I could then, using my consciousness pattern, give her an awareness of herself equal to my own. Plus I could add all the information about things like how to dress oneself, eating, bathing, socializing, driving a car, basically all the things that I have learned how to do as I have grown up. When I had changed myself into a woman earlier I hadn't changed my orientation for sex. I still felt the need to share my life with the woman of my dreams. I knew that changing Cherub from a cat into a human female would most likely leave her as a heterosexual. You could change the outside and you could enhance the inside, but you couldn't influence the basic idea of who and what you were. Otherwise the MAU would have been used long ago to make a race of slaves or warriors who thought only the government approved thoughts. It would seem as if she had been asleep dreaming of being a cat but was now awake. Realizing that Cherub wouldn't be able to touch the interior crystal, I designed a device that looked like a bracelet that would allow me to interface with the machine from the outside. The bracelet would extend two tubules that would penetrate the MAU and allow me to program it. Watching Star Trek Voyager's character, Seven of Nine, use her tubules to interface with computers gave me the idea. With all the changes made to myself, I then called Cherub and placed her inside the MAU and set the changes into motion. The door closed and then moments later it opened again. She stood there with her eyes closed, but her head was tilted slightly as if she was hearing something. She slowly opened her eyes and looked at herself with wonder and surprise on her face. Bringing up her hands she touched her face, then slid them down her body to her waist. "How do you feel?" I asked. Startled she looked at me and then stepped out of the box. Confusion was written on her face, "This place is familiar also, yet I don't understand how that could be." It was amazing how I could read the emotions on her face. I reasoned that the MAU had changed how a cat would use its tail and ears to show emotions to something more human. "Please", she asked shyly, "could you tell me where I am?" I reached out and took hold of her hand and led her over to the couch and sat down. I studied her face for a moment as I thought of how to begin. "Do you remember anything before this moment?" Her brow wrinkled in thought, then," I remember being happy, warm, contented. I was in a big place with lots of places to explore. There was something there that took care of me and would rub me, that always felt good and I knew I was loved." "Do you know where that place is?", I asked. She started to say something and then hesitated. She closed her eyes, then she took a deep breath and held it for a moment. Opening her eyes as she let it out, she looked at me with a puzzled expression. "This place smells like that place, like home. But... this is so much smaller, I don't understand." "Do you know who you are?" "I'm...I'm, yes I am Cherub!" she stated with a smile. I was momentarily dazzled by her smile, regaining my composure I asked again. "Do you know what a cat is and do you know who I am?" She frowned and put a hand to her temples as if she had a sudden migraine, then again surprise flooded her face. "Yes, I do...but I don't know how. I am sure I have never seen a cat before and you smell like that thing that took care of me, but you are like me, how could that be?" Standing up I pulled her to her feet and led her around to the screen on the MAU. Pointing to the picture on it I said, "This is what you look like right now." Shyly she reached out and caressed the screen, then I changed the picture to what she had looked like before I changed her. "THAT is a CAT," she exclaimed proudly. "You are correct," I nodded approvingly adding, "and that is what you looked like before you opened your eyes and looked at me." "But I am not a cat", she protested, "how can that be me?" "No you are not a cat, not anymore." I told her how I had found the box and realized what it could do. I told her how as a cat she had come into my life and brought a richness that had been missing until now. I also told her how I was lonely for someone like me who would love me as much as I loved her. Finally I told her how I had changed her from a cat into the woman that she now was in the hope that she would be that person who would love me. She sat there for several long moments with her eyes closed. Her hands had been busy touching everything around her as we talked, but now they lay loosely in her lap. Finally she opened her eyes and looked at me. "Do you love me?". she asked. "Yes I do, with all my heart!" I replied earnestly Several minutes went by before I asked, "Do you love me?, I understand if you don't." "Oh, no," she replied quickly, "I think I do, it's just I am not sure what it means to love you." Hesitantly she continued, "I was happy before, when you took care of me. You fed me and rubbed me. I was warm and dry and you played with me. But now I understand so much and yet it seems that I understand so little. I don't know what I need or how to ask for it." "I understand, you mean that you have all the knowledge that I have given you in your head, but you haven't had any personal experience to be able to judge things for yourself. This leaves you confused as to what you really want and don't want." "YES," she exclaimed excitedly, "That's it exactly, I think I love you, but how do I know that it is really love?"
