MAU: The Fable of the Farmer and his Wife
Synopsis: Surprisingly to most people, many of the fables giving
lessons in life are taken from true, or nearly true, experiences.
However, the details are often changed so the stories may more
readily fit into the prevailing culture, and as such, many of the true
details are lost.

Foreward:
For many, many centuries, a strange procession of metallic cargo
containers fell endlessly in a cometary orbit around the tiny yellow
star. From the gashes and holes in the huge containers, small
metal boxes and other assorted trade goods spilled, joining other
such assorted debris in a strange cloud. Once in a while, a
collision with another piece of celestial rubbish would split the
remains of a container into a veritable explosion of its contents.
Perturbed by the gravitational fields of the planets, asteroids, and
other comets, the debris cloud lengthened and widened into a
nearly endless chain of refuse that intercepted the orbital planes
of several of the planets. At first, the debris only rarely passed
near enough to the third planet that some of the junk rained
through the atmosphere. But over the centuries, as the debris cloud
spread along its orbit, the rain of alien refuse became more and
more common...
MAU: The Fable of the Farmer and his Wife
A farmer came in from a long day's work and complained to his
wife of his labors, as was his wont. When she shot back that her
own household chores were equally burdensome, the farmer
mocked her. How could common household chores be as difficult
as tending the livestock and the fields? A long argument ensued,
during which the farmer made a wager with his wife. The farmer
would spend a day doing his wife's chores, and she would spend
a day doing his. In this way, they would be able to understand
who had the more difficult tasks.
Alas, the wife exclaimed in her defense, it would not be a fair
contest. He was, after all, stronger, and it would be far easier for
him to handle her chores than for her to do his. This debate
seemed at an impasse when the farmer recalled a magical box
he'd found a few days prior. The box would change things. The
wife was shocked - it was surely a thing of evil, and no good could
come of it. But the husband persuaded her that it wasn't evil, and
besides, it had power to make their contest truly fair. Eventually,
he persuaded his wife that only by using the magic box would
they settle their argument about who had the easier job.
And so, early the next morning, after they rose from bed, the wife
used the magic box to become the farmer, and the farmer used
the magic box to change into his wife.
The day of 'easy' labor didn't start well for the wife. First, as she
got the bag of oats to feed the mule, she spilled it. Then the mule
refused to stand still to be harnessed, and the cart got stuck in the
barn. Cutting hay with the scythe was much slower than she
expected, and she forgot to pile it to dry. Cutting the wheat with
the sickle, she knocked more grain from the stalks than she left
on them, and her misshapen and sloppy shocks blew over in the
gentle breeze. In the evening, the cow refused to move home
from the pasture, and then as it neared the barn, it was spooked
by the chickens running amok. Cleaning the barn of soiled straw
was hot, stinky, and the dirty straw blew in her face. Finally, she
spilled the mule's feedbag once more as she tried to finish the
day. By the time she trudged into the house to concede the
contest, she was weary and sore.
The farmer had no better a day. In gathering the eggs, he let the
fowl escape from their pen, then he broke most of the eggs when
he nearly tripped trying to avoid the chickens underfoot. He'd let
the coals go out in the stove, so he had to relight it before he
could cook the porridge. The cow kicked over the milk pail. By
the time he set breakfast on the table, the porridge was burned.
As he slopped the pigs, he tripped and fell face-first into the mud
in the pig wallow. Then he spilled the bag of feed for the fowls.
He scooped some grain into a bag so the miller could grind some
flour, but the bag was old and had a leak, so he had to repeat the
trip with a new bag. As he washed the laundry in the stream, he
tipped the basked and got thoroughly soaked chasing the clothes
down the stream. The fowl got into the garden and he had to
chase them out before he could pick vegetables. While plucking
a chicken for dinner, he ended up with feathers in and over the
dead fowl. As he cooked dinner, he realized he'd forgotten to
make bread, so he hastily mixed the dough, but it didn't rise
much, ending up like a brick of unleavened dough. With the
feathery stew, dinner was a disaster, and he was ready to
concede the contest.
After dinner, both admitted that they had underestimated the
difficulty of each other's jobs. Both were eager to return things to
normal. Unfortunately, as they tried to activate the magic box,
they found it would no longer work. Again and again they tried,
but eventually, the box shrank and they were left stuck in each
others' bodies.
From that day hence, the farmer and his wife never ceased
complaining about how the other had a far easier life and chores.
Their constant griping led a wandering storyteller to concoct a tale
about their woes as a lesson to others. While the storyteller
eventually gained fame, the hapless farmer and his wife forever
after rued the day they'd made the wager to see who had the
tougher job in life.
