They say when you look out at the world from a planes window everyone looks like ants. I'd like
to see if that's true, but I have a fear of heights and am too afraid to even look out the
window. God, that sounds so stupid coming from me. Here I am on my way to face my greatest fear,
and I'm scared of the view out the window next to me. Maybe I only have so much braveness to go
around? It's silly really.
"Excuse me, can I get you some soda water? It'll settle your stomach if your feeling nervous."
Even the stewardess can see how terrified I am despite the strong face I'm trying to put on.
She's right, the soda does help my stomach, but of course the real problems are in my head.
I can't help but to imagine all of these crazy scenarios of what's to come. Like maybe the
plane will crash before I even get there, but when I crawl out of the wreckage as the only
survivor my parents will forget all of our problems and smother me with love. Hell they'd be
more likely to push me back into the rubble. Why am I even going?

The plane's landed (safely) and I already see that things are of to a good start. Only my
younger brother's come out to greet me. Andy's even got one of those stupid signs with my name
on it as if I wouldn't recognize him. Here I am just a few feet from him and he doesn't know
it's me, how creepy.
"Hello Andy. Where's mom and dad?"
He stands there staring at me blankly for a fully minute before finally realizing who I am.
"You look? Well you know dad, his heart?"
"Don't make excuses for them. I'm happy to see you again Andy. I've missed you a lot." This
is hard for him. Yes of course it's hard for me, but Andy's never been good with awkward
situations. Rather than drag this out I decide to change the topic, "Is that your car over
there? I'm shocked it hasn't fallen apart by now. Do you remember when you picked up those
two fat hitchhikers?"
"And the seat broke! Oh man that was great! Well I swear I've glued the seat back in, so it
should be safe." Already he's joking with me. Bringing up old times is usually a good way to
break the tension.

I would have liked for the drive home to have been longer, but instead it seemed like we were
there before I even knew it. Nothing's changed at all. The house is still the same ugly lime
green color, dad's old truck is still up on blocks in the driveway, and the lawns just as
overgrown as when I left. It's as if the whole place had been frozen in time for all of these
years. Things never change around here, and neither do the people.
"Oh my god! Sam you've grown so much! I'm so sorry that I couldn't come to the airport with
Andy, but your father? Well he'll be happy to see you." My mother can barely restrain herself
from crushing me in a tight embrace. I can't help but to return the hug. I've missed her so
much, and it makes me happy to be held by her. Before I can even reply she's picking me over
to have a good look. "You've dyed your hair, and lost a lot of weight. I can't believe my
chubby little boy has changed so much on me."
"I met someone in California whose helped me a lot with that. He even convinced me to go
through the surgery."
Mom giggles, "I thought your nose looked different."
Now comes the hard part. It'd be easy for me to leave things as they are between us, but I need
to ask mom these questions. "Mom," my throat feels so dry, "Why did you side with him? You
know he's wrong about this, and you guys really abandoned me."
"I was never against you Sam, and you were the one who left us. Don't try to push this onto
me. You're the one?"
"Nothing's changed! Why did you even call me back if that's your opinion?" Naturally I don't
mean to yell at her, but she's still hashing out the same old excuses. Why is it so hard for
her to admit the truth? Has my dad really fooled her so well into believing he was right?
"Don't you talk to your mother like that!" The familiar sound of his raspy voice causes me to
turn, and there he is. It angers me just to look at him, let alone be scolded by him. Already
mom and Andy are backing away out of fear of what's to come. The last confrontation between my
father and I ended with me leaving for seven years. Why did I even come back?
I find it hard to look my dad in the eyes, "Who're you to talk to me that way? After what you
did... You're sick!" Quicker than dad can spit out a reply I turn to my mom and hug her
goodbye. I won't stay in this house for a second longer. Maybe if I get to the airport quick I
can catch a flight back home.
As I storm off down the road Andy quickly catches up, and since it's a long walk I accept a lift
in his car. "Sam why do you have to be like this? Can't you change, or at least pretend to be
like us. If nothing else you could do it for mom's sake."
"No way," I snap back, "I'll never accept that faggot bastard! He should crawl back into the
closet and suffocate. How can you even look at that cross-dressing bastard and see our father?
All I see is a queer who can't accept what God made him to be."
Andy's quiet after that. He doesn't even tell me goodbye at the airport. Maybe it's for the
best. Accepting our father makes him a queer lover, and I'll be damned if I want to be seen with
a queer lover. They're all wrong! Nothing's changed!
