Wells College and its First Males
In real life, Wells College will admit males as students in the fall of 2005.
136 years of tradition will bite the dust. I have no ties to Wells College. This
story is a work of pure fiction. No buildings mentioned here exist at Wells
College at the time of this writing. No people or animals were hurt in the
writing of this tale. Beware of my use of historical characters in slightly
different roles. See if you can spot them all. I am side stepping here. This
Part one of five.
The Start
Hello people. As Director of Special Operations for the Wellman Clinic, I have
many tasks. One of the more unpleasant ones is internal security. No one likes
the person who has to watch the watchers. I answer only to the Wellman Board of
Directors. Part of that duty, by the mandate of Board of Directors is to monitor
employee's computer use. I have the computer send me reports of sexual
misconduct. To make it easy to explain, if John is viewing a porn site, I know
of it. If John is doing research for school or the Wellman, no problem. If John
is doing it for personal use, he is told to keep at home. Thus said, a copy of
an e-mail came my way. It was from a Wellman employee to a student at Wells
College. The employee was an alumna Wells College. This employee was upset at
Wells College new policy. Wells College was going to admit males as students in
the fall of 2005. Well she had my sympathy, for I did not like it either. What
did get my attention was the e-mail talked of forced feminization. While this
practice done in fun or to teach a leach a lesson is okay. However it is not
right to deprive a person of his or her right to fulfill their destiny. It also
said, of calling the incoming males female titles, such as Freshwoman or Miss.
and Ms.. I gave that a good laugh. If a man wants to go to a college that was
for years all female, then he should expect some teasing. In short of martial
law, there was no way you could stop a normal everyday practice. I am wondering
how the new male athletic teams would be treated by their competition. I Red
Flagged the user's account and had it send me all it's use, but not stop it.
This could be a way of blowing off steam. If that was all it was, I would let it
go. If it violated the Wellman's policy in anyway, I will do what must be done.
Pre-Mission
The e-mails continued. They were very graphic in detail. The e-mails listed what
to do, how to do, and when to do it. It also listed how to spot the best
candidates for treatment. I felt a fine line was crossed. On scene investigation
was needed. That meant using trained people in a field I was not trained in.
However, I knew people in that field.
Thus in two days I had in my office, three representatives of the Salem
Sheriff's Department. They were Major Andrew Jackson, Sergeant Bobbie Winston,
and Deputy Nicole Sargento. Also there was Hedi Hessman, and Wild Bill. Hedi was
an attorney at law, and Wild Bill was on the board of directors. Major Jackson
had brought pizza and wings. He knew of my practice of having drinks at meetings
like this. This was no exception. I had a pony keg of beer in a refrigerator
that had tap system built in. I also put the mugs and pitchers in there to chill
them down and frost them up. The beer came from the local brewery that I had
stock in.
The brewmeister was Nicole's brother. This beer was a test product. He sent this
over for me to test outside the brewery. He did this to get an honest outside
view. He would also send some of a proven product that was on the market. I was
using the test product.
I also had a conference call setup. This call included Judge Susan B. Anthony, a
local judge. Sheriff Rod Sterling of Cayuga County. Dr. Mary Walker, President
of Wells College. Kit Carson, Head of Security for Wells College. And an old
platoon mate of mine Mr. Scott. Scotty as he liked to be called owned a charter
fishing service and lived in a near by county. He had some vital logistics that
could aid in the operation.
Judge Anthony started "I am an alumna of Wells College. I do not like the new
policy. But I understand the need to keep the school solvent. If there was
another way that was effective, I would go that way. However sometimes you have
fish. Sometimes cut bait. This time, it looks like we do both. However, Ms Starr
has been monitoring e-mails from an alumna and current student. The alumna is an
employee of the Wellman Clinic and Ms. Starr has been monitoring the employee's
use of the Wellman Clinic's computer. She does hope this is just talk and not
something serious. A school should be a place to learn and grow. We cannot stop
any good natured teasing without declaring martial law. We can prevent harm.
Sheriff Sterling, this your county. Your office will in charge of the
investigation. I will like to add that I feel your department is highly capable,
but you have no one young enough to pass as a traditional student. The few that
are close enough or close enough for grad work are well known. Our people are
not known. Deputy Sargento can pass as a student. Sgt. Winston can pass as a
staff member other than security or instructor. She will play out well as a
house keeper or grounds crew member. I would want you add some of your
department's members to the Wells College security staff."
Sheriff Sterling said, "I already allow my people to do that. I have two
Sergeants and one Lieutenant working there. I will use Lt. ' George ' Custer.
Lt. Custer can act as a liaison. That way we can have clear control with all
departments."
Scott breaks in singing "Georgia, Georgia, the whole day through..."
I asked "What is with the singing of ' Georgia on my Mind '? And you are not
only out of tune but off key as well."
Scott said, "Lt. Custer is a bonnie yon lass Capt. Starr. I never said, I could
sing. Now if you asked me to play that song on the pipes, I could."
I noticed Scott was using a Scottish accent. I could see he was in a playful
mood. However Sheriff Sterling was not. He said, "Ah so you are the Captain of
the good ship Valkyrie. I have three questions for you. Two are my job. One is a
business related."
Hedi said, "Don't answer anything without your lawyer."
Scott said, "I think I know Sheriff Sterling's questions already. He can't bust
me because he knows I am right. They are more of personal curiosity questions.
Deputy Marcus Reno got tossed in the lake because he boarded my boat with out
permission. He was also out his jurisdiction and did not say he was cop. He was
off duty and out of uniform. He was able to walk to shore. The Coasties said
they did not want to push it. The Oswego County Sheriff laughed at your man.
They told him he should have called us. Reno was mad, because my charter
operation got some good salmon off shore in your county when all he could catch
was a cold. That clears your job questions. I also know of your bet with the
Oswego County Silver Star. I can help there very easy. I have three days open
for you. Two you have full use of the boat. The other you have to share. I will
ask two things. First you have Georgia on board the whole time. The other you
pay her the bounty of a return toss. She did it yesterday."
Sheriff Sterling said, "Are you a mind reader?"
Scott said, "Nope. Georgia and I were cleaning my other boat yesterday. I said
something real nice to her. She went to kiss me and we both went in. Then over
Sake and some R & B, she told me everything. The lake was cold."
Sheriff Sterling said, "I will buy that keg myself. But who do we share the boat
with?"
Scott said, "Members of the Oswego County Silver Star. Onondoga County wants in
on the act, but I told them I would talk with you about. Oswego County already
agrees. At this rate, you could make a regional contest."
Sheriff Sterling said, "That sounds like fun. What was Ms. Starr's need of you?"
Scott said, "To borrow a car. Nicole can get away with out of state plates, but
Bobbie needs a car with New York plates. I will let her use a 99 GMC Jimmy with
a four wheel drive option and my hunting camp near Aurora. It will save time on
finding a place for her to stay."
Dr. Walker spoke "Why are you all doing this? This could be a bunch of
sophomoric pranks that Will played on incoming students."
I said, "Dr. Walker, I hope you are right. I hope all Nicole and Bobbie get to
do is see some of your fall foliage and taste the local wineries products. I
know there are some very good wines from your region. Including one whose owner
has an on going joke with the use of his name. "(True Fact. Of course I may not
know wine, but I know what I like. That is the best guide to buying a wine.)
Dr. Walker said, "You must have been talking to the local Chamber of Commerce."
Kit said, "I know of the new policy. So far it has been a firm and polite
protests. We have returned the favor to the students. I agree with Judge Anthony
and Ms. Starr. I also like the fact that Ms. Starr is trying get everyone on the
same song. A task like this requires everyone working together."
Sheriff Sterling said, "That is correct Ms. Carson. Major Jackson, if any of
your people are married, tell them to invite their husbands. The local fishing
is top notch."
Scott said, "I can attest to that fact. The Finger Lakes have some spots that
are so deep, that they read no bottom on Navy Sonar. Even when they use the
stuff geared for freshwater and shallow water. My Fish Finders work on a similar
process. " (True Fact)
Sheriff Sterling said, "Ms. Starr, everything looks good. You do excellent prep
work and try to bring things together in very easy way."
Kit said, "You crazy JarHeads, if you act like you can solve this problem one
way or other and make your solution work."
I said, "That's right. Wells College would stay all female. We Marines are
suckers for tradition."
Everybody hung up and Major Jackson broke out the food, as Bobbie served the
beer. Nicole looked worried. I asked "Nicole, what is wrong?"
Nicole said, "I am worried about Larry. He is not fully healed. I have got calls
from the brewery saying he zones out at times. I know he is not liked by all the
workers. Some have gone out of their way to tease him. When they do that, he
zones out."
Wild Bill spoke "I know of this. Hedi did bring this to my attention. Most of
the workers do leave Larry alone. I know one worker who does not like your
brother but has gone out of his way to protect Larry. He told me that his bank
balance and loans are maxed. He'd rather work to earn money anyway with in
reason than go bankrupt. He told me there others that think that way and have
families to take care of. The earlier closing damn near busted a lot of good
people. They know if Larry is working, they can make money to pay their way. He
says he may not like Larry, but he knows he needs this job. He feels by
protecting Larry, he can protect his job. The ones who like or tolerate Larry
think the same way. The Union has gone out of their way to aid Larry. Union
workers protecting management at a work site. Larry is the only BrewMeister I
have. He does good work. Larry has also been taking a former boxer into the gym
three times a week. Larry wants to protect himself. He told me that he cannot
always be calling for his cop-sister to protect him. He wants you to be yourself
and go on in your life. Even if that is to be married and/or live with cats if
that is what you want. Don't worry. Hedi and Helga have agreed to look in on
Larry. I will as well. Barry said he would help out. He and Larry have gone
fishing a few times. Larry has brought in some good size fish and can always
fill his limit."
Nicole said, "Wow! That is great. I was wondering on where the fish were coming
from. Larry going fishing and taking boxing lessons. He is growing back to his
some what normal past and keeping his new way."
Bobbie said, "Can he make it in the ring?"
Wild Bill said, "That is unknown. I think Larry just wants to stand up for
himself and to be left alone. He also wants Helga or any other gal to like Larry
as Larry and Laurie."
I said, "Bobbie and Nicole. You leave in a week for Oswego. You will stay there
for a month perfecting your cover. You will stay with Scott. After that, on to
Wells College and hopefully, Nicole gets some extra credits and Bobbie gets some
good wine."
Launch Time
Bobbie and Nicole left Salem in Nicole's car. Barry, Hedi, Helga, Wild Bill, and
myself were there as well. Wild Bill put on the back seat of Nicole's car a
large cooler that held a lunchbox and cold drinks. I saw Larry and knew why
Nicole was worried. Larry held tight to Helga with one hand. In his other hand,
he was holding his Godzilla doll. Nicole told me that was a sure sign that Larry
was hurting. Barry walked over to Larry and whispered something in his ear.
Larry seemed to stand a little taller.
I asked Barry "What did you say to him?"
Barry said, "I just told him that Nicole thinks he is very brave. I also told
him I would take him fishing tomorrow after work."
I said, "Did she really say that or did you let him think that?"
Barry said, "A little of both. Nicole needs to focus on her task at hand. Larry
needs a boost of spirit. So I told Larry what Nicole wished for. She told me
that she wished Larry was a little more braver and I told Larry she thought he
was brave. Of course being brave is doing what you need to do when you are
scared spitless."
"Where did you learn that from?" I wondered.
Barry said, "From you and Wild Bill. I left the twins with Roxanne. Mark and
Mary Lu are expecting any day now. They know it is a boy. They picked a name for
him already. His name is Walter S. Taylor."
I said, "Tell Mark and Mary Lu to keep their son out of the wine business."
