Back out on State Street, the night was still ours. It was just before
nine o'clock, so any place we could go party was just about to heat up.
"Where to sisters?" asked Edith.
"Well, we could take our newly outed lesbian to Deb's," suggest Monica
with a chuckle in her voice. Deb's was short for Debutante's, a well
known locally as a lipstick lesbian dance bar.
"Too easy," replied Edith, "I think she should have to mix with a more
mainstream crowd, and then we can see how she handles herself."
"Let's do Catalan," suggested Rhonda, "Usually the guys there buy us
lots of drinks." Catalan was a nightclub that catered more to an over 30
crowd. It played great dance music, but also had coves and pods where
people could hide and chat. It wasn't the warehouse with a sound system
that a lot of these places are.
"Do we need to take the car, or can we walk it?" asked Monica.
"I'm fine with it, as long as Jeannie can make it," said Rhonda.
"How far is it?" I asked. "We go to the end of State, and then over
three or four blocks ... so it's a bit of a hike in heels."
"I'm just one of the girls tonight," I said.
"Ok, we'll take the car ... they have valet," said Rhonda. The tone of
my voice must have given my true feelings away.
We started walking back towards the parking garage. Edith and Rhonda
were in the lead, while Monica and I trailed. We went about a quarter
mile or so without saying anything. I then noticed Monica and I were
holding hands. I don't know who took whose hand first, but it was quite
low key and really quite nice. She had been aggressive all day, and just
the idea of us doing something subtle gave it all balance. It felt like
it could be love to me, but I was worried that this was love soaked in
tequila. Monica and I didn't say anything else the rest of the walk.
Edith and Rhonda did all the talking with words.
At the garage, Monica released my hand and we all went up the stairs
single file. I found myself using the handrail to make sure I got up the
stairs in one piece. The three of them climbed them like mountain goats,
but I was less sure footed. Going up in these 3 and 1/2 spikes is more
work then coming down. At floor two of the stairwell, I looked ahead and
saw the three of them waiting for me at the third floor. When I got to
the turn for the final flight, they then exited. I knew then that I had
to keep up, but could not say something.
As I exited the stair, they were a good 15 to 20 steps ahead of me. I
panicked and started to dash after them. I heard the sprint on my high
heels on the cement floor like a cap gun - "pop, pop, pop!". As I caught
up to them and slowed down, the three of them had turned to watch me
run. All three were now laughing at me. Edith was laughing so hard that
she was almost hyperventilating.
Rhonda came back over to the trunk of the car, put her hand on my
shoulder and said, "For the first time today, you broke your own rule.
You panicked and looked really really (pause) stupid. Seeing you run
like that, you definitely looked like a boy wearing a dress. I don't
care what else happens tonight, (said slowly with authority) don't you
ever do ANYTHING like that again when you're out with us dressed as
Jeannie." She turned and went to open the door with her key.
Monica came over, giggled and said, "I thought you looked adorable." She
took her hand, gently clasped my chin, and turned my head put a petal
soft kiss on my lips. This was enough of a kiss to show emotion, but not
enough to smear either of our lipsticks. I fought my instinct to lunge
back.
She then looked in to my eyes and said, "I think you are just so cool
for doing all this. And, I'm having so much fun with it. If I forget to
tell you thanks for doing this for us, that's your thank you."
We then got in the back seat, backing in like ladies do. I sat behind
Rhonda, who was driving. Monica snuggled up next to me. We drove down
the structure, Rhonda paid, and we exited and then drove out on to the
main drag. Rhonda decided to take us by the scenic route, so we just
drove around town looking at the sights.
While we drove around for a bit, Monica just nuzzled up against me, I
think we kissed once or twice more. We came to a stop light at the light
at Delaney and First. Our car was in the center lane. The radio was
playing "Take My Breath Away" from Top Gun in the background. I was
totally in the moment. It was total bliss.
Suddenly I heard the muffled cries of swear words coming from the left
turn lane. "Ass hole. Bitches. Rhonda Williams, you're such a fuckin'
asshole."
Rhonda and I each looked at the car next to us, in the passenger seat
was Gretchen, hanging out the window, swearing up a storm and waiving
her hands. "And you three are such fucking bitches. You're the reason I
got fired." She continued to scream and give us the finger.
Edith started to bob her head in disbelief. "And you ... you're such a
fag for prancing around all day dressed like a girl ... fuckin' faggot!"
Just then the left turn lane light changed, and the driver of the car
she was in then pulled ahead. I heard a horn honk, as it rounded the
turn.
"Are you okay?" asked Rhonda.
"Yeah," I said shaking my head, "all I can say is what a bitch Gretchen
really is," I replied. We all then started to laugh at that. Our light
changed to green, and we headed straight for Catalan.
