We arrived at Catalan. A couple of cars were in the valet drop off line
ahead of us. I found myself thinking that the last time I was here this
spring, my buddies and I couldn't get past the front door to save our
souls.
When we got to the head of the line, a pair of valets each sprung out,
each grabbed a side of the car, and opened our doors. We all seductively
slithered out. I saw the valet on Monica's side nod to the doorman and
he nodded back. I knew we were in.
Sure enough, the four of us were flagged in, even though I felt like I
was getting the second eyeing. We got to the door; each of us paid the
$10 cover and went inside. Rhonda then pulled us aside. "I think we need
to go to the ladies room."
We crossed the lobby and went inside. Rhonda and Edith went in first.
They looked around and headed to the far corner of the counter. Monica
ushered me in.
Edith and Rhonda looked at me disapprovingly, "Your little sprint back
there wrecked some of your make-up, you're all glowly and kind of messed
up," said Rhonda, "... your pores are now showing and your eyes are
streaky."
I looked in the mirror. I didn't think it was that bad, but Rhonda must
have had to say something. "I didn't bring my stuff ... I didn't think
that I needed to ..."
"Girls, what to you have to cover things up?" Each of them put their
purses on the counters, and started looking through them for what they
could have to help me.
I heard a flush from a stall on the other end. I was nervous and held my
breath. I looked in the mirror and coming out of the far stall was Rita,
my friend from Matthew's salon. I saw her look over at me, our eyes met
and she called out "Girlfriend?"
I smiled and a voice two octaves higher then the voice I had been using
called out, "Oh my gawd - Hi Rita!" She came over to our end of the
restroom, "Hi ladies, mind if I help?" Monica didn't recognize her since
she was looking at wigs, but Rhonda did a double take and figured her
out, "You're the shop girl from Matthew's salon."
She stood up a bit taller and smiled, "I am the cavalry. Let me rescue
this poor girl."
She guided me in to a stall, locked the door and had me take off my wig.
"What did you do?" asked Rita. I explained about my crisis of confidence
at the parking garage. "Don't you ever do that again," she chided me, "a
lady has to keep her poise about her."
We wrapped my collar with toilet tissue. She then brought out a small
jar of dusting powder, a large brush, she danced around me a dusted me
from collarbone to scalp line. Then, she took some toilet tissue and
dusted the excess off my face. She then reworked my whole face: eye
liner, shadow, blush and relined my lips. "Ok, you're a big girl ... you
have to do your own lipstick."
I tore off the neck roll, got off the commode and almost walked out of
the stall without my hair on. "Hold on princess," Rita said grabbing my
wrist, "you almost forgot your personality." She took the wig from my
left hand and briskly shook it out. "Lean over," and she put it
perfectly on my head. It looked full and shiny. "Brush the bangs in the
mirror."
I walked out leaned on the counter, looked in the mirror, colored my
lips in between the lines and looked better then ever. I looked over to
the approval of my companions, "Girlfriends, are we ready to go party?"
I said with a smile.
"Brush the bangs," reminded Rita. And with four flips of a brush, I was
ready to roll.
As we walked down the hall, I turned to her and said, "Let me buy you a
drink Rita. It's the least I can do."
"I was just at the bar by myself, so that's ok." We both smiled. The
Calvary had saved the day. I could hear the pulsing rhythms of "Some
Like It Hot" by The Power Station. as we strutted down the hall. I
smiled. I felt hot.
We went over to an eight person pod, which really was a double wide
booth with solid sides about four feet up, and gauze like drapes the
rest of the way to the ceiling. the. It was a white table surrounded
with white captain's chairs on each side. Rhonda took the head seat in
back. Rita and I went on the left side while Monica and Edith were to
the right.
"Look at you sister," beamed Rita, "is this beautiful swan who we saw
walk in my door the other night?"
"Thank you," I said with a blush, "well, your touch ups have made a
difference here."
"And look at this outfit," Rita continued, "you look so fine, that can
come out with us anytime."
"I might just do that," I replied. I looked over at Monica. She smiled
and said, "I don't think this is the last we're going to see of
Jeannie."
A dishwater blond waitress wearing a yellow and maroon short sleeve
jumpsuit which only went to the knees and matching maroon Chuck Taylor
Converse High Tops came up to the table to take our order. Rhonda
ordered a Double Martini - Neat, Edith ordered a Tequila Sunrise, Monica
ordered Sex On A Beach, Rita also ordered a Tequila Sunrise and I just
ordered a rum and diet coke. I felt the peer pressure to be one of the
girls again. I probably would have normally drunk imported beer all
night. I almost would have rather drank water right now.
I noticed that Edith and Rita seemed like they were really hitting it
off. Edith asked her about working for Matthew and then continued asking
her several really girly types of questions about make-up and fixing
one's self up. I'll just never forget the picture in my mind the two of
them having a real conversation and enjoying each other's company.
Our waitress returned shortly with our drinks, and said, "These are
complements of two gentlemen at the bar." We all looked over to see Marc
and Lars from DeutchTech, sitting on stools toasting us, looking back
and toasting us.
"Who are they?" asked Rita.
"Just the largest client our company has ever had," replied Rhonda.
